First edition. Niklaus Manuel's Dance of Death, painted in Bern around 1515-1520, lithographed after faithful copies by the famous painter Wilhelm Stettler. With a tinted lithographed portrait of the author, lithographed title page, 1 lithographed text page, and 24 lithographed plates by J. Bergmann after W. Stettler. Landscape folio. (2) leaves, 4 pages, 24 plates. Text in German (despite the dual language titles). A very nice copy in a marbled paper covered hard back binding, with dark leather spine (a little rubbed) and a red leather label with gilt titles to the front board. The boards are a little rubbed and bumped, but sound. Inside, the book is in very good condition throughout, with light to moderate foxing to the sheets. Reprint of the 24-part "Dance of Death" by Niklaus Manuel, nicknamed Deutsch (ca. 1484-1530), originally created in colour between 1515 and 1520 and located on the cemetery wall of the Dominican monastery in Bern until 1560. The simplified, black-and-white lithographs of the present examples were produced by the Lithographic Institute Rod. Haag and Company based on the colour copies by Wilhelm Stettler (1643-1708) and published in book form in 1825. A colour version was omitted "to reduce costs." Some of the depicted figures are said to have been contemporaries of Deutsch or historically significant figures. The lithographs each contain one to four (family) coats of arms, which either refer to the people in the picture or to the artist's sponsors. They are explained in the preface by Johann Rudolf Wyss (1781/82-1830). Originally, the images were accompanied by rhymed texts, preserved in a 1576 copy by the Bernese schoolmaster Hans Kiener. A rare work. 34cm x 43.5cm. Our copy conforms to WorldCat / OCLC: 45362064 which seems to be the only entry to mention a portrait. .
