Cham (Charles-Amédée de Noé, comte de Noé, 1818-1879), Parisian caricaturist and lithographer of aristocratic descent, defied parental expectations of a conventional career to train under Charlet and Delaroche. His pseudonym was derived from his initials (C.A. Ham) and the name of Noah's son. He contributed c.40,000 satirical drawings to Le Charivari (1839-75), pioneering two-panel comic strips in albums like Moeurs Algériennes (1843) and Les Toques du Jour (1847). In his later years, he lived in Batignolles following a sexual scandal; illustrated Album du Siège (1870) and Les Folies de la Commune (1871). He was awarded the Légion d'honneur in 1877. He died of tuberculosis in Paris. .
