EDITION ORIGINALE DEDICACEE. Damien de Martel a commencé sa carrière diplômatique en Chine de 1908 comme chargé d'affaire à la légation française de Pékin. Après l'effondrement du régime impérial et l'abdication de Puyi en 1912, il sera nommé Ministre plénipotentiaire, fonction qu'il occupera jusqu'en 1921. A cette date il est chargé de la mise en place de la légation diplomatique en Lettonie. Entre temps il s'était rendu en Sibérie en 1919, au moment au l'amiral Koltchak résistait avec ses troupes contre les bolcheviques, avec le soutien de troupes interalliées. C'est cet épisode de la fin de l'armée impériale que Damien de Martel décrit dans ce roman réaliste.

8. Peking, Imprimerie de la Politique de Pekin, 1926, in-8°, (8)nn pp + 144 pp, text within printed borders on uncut double leaves (Eastern art of printing). Original printed wrapper, sewn in the Eastern way with silk threads. Bookblock is in good shape but the original wrapper is severely damaged with some loss of paper ( but no loss of text) due to the poor quality of the paper wrapper. The book is protected with a transparent acid-free sleeve and kept in a purposely made cloth box. First edition of this novel printed in Beijing which relates the Siberian adventures of Admiral Kolchak and the allied counter-revolutionary efforts starting at Vladivostock and hoping to reach Moscow. The author was the plenipotentiary minister of France in China from 1908 onwards. He witnessed the collapse of the empire and also the Allied efforts to fight the Russian communists in Siberia. His secretary at the French Legation was the famous writer and Nobel prize laureate Saint-John Perse (Alexis Leger). Text in French. Livre en français. Very rare, only 5 entries in the OCLC catalogue.
