Better known as the African Association, the society was founded in 1788 under the influence of Sir Joseph Banks to promote the exploration of the interior of Africa. The Proceedings recount, among the earliest initiatives, the departure of John Ledyard for Cairo and his death shortly after his arrival, as well as the journey of Paul Lucas. The volume includes detailed descriptions of the cities of the Fezzan, notably Mourzouk and Tripoli, addressing their government, population, and religion, and extends to broader observations on the Bornou Empire, contributing to early European knowledge of Saharan and sub-Saharan Africa.
