Sutherland made the importent remark that the infrared eigenfrequencies of solid bodies have their origin possibly in the elastic vibrations of these bodies. Einstein, impressed by this remark, adds that electrically charged ions are the sources of optical vibrations, whreas elastic vibrations are caused by the mutual motion of the entire molecule.
