Pierre Kropotkine (1842-1921) était un prince russe, géographe, explorateur, zoologiste et l'un des théoriciens les plus influents de l'anarchisme et du communisme libertaire au XIXe et au début du XXe siècle. Né dans une famille noble à Moscou, il a renoncé à son statut aristocratique et est devenu un révolutionnaire, prônant une société fondée sur l'entraide, la coopération volontaire et l'abolition de toutes les formes de gouvernement coercitif. Il affirmait que la coopération et l'entraide, plutôt que la concurrence, étaient les moteurs de l'évolution et du progrès social, remettant en question l'accent mis par Darwin sur la « survie du plus apte ». Sur le plan politique, il était une figure de proue du mouvement anarchiste, promouvant l'idée d'une société sans État et sans classes, organisée par le biais d'associations volontaires et d'une autogestion locale.
