Political Communications: The general election campaign of 1987
-
First Edition. Hardback blue cloth, in original unclipped dust jacket. This book examines that process of political communication in the 1987 election. It is organised into eight parts: 1. The Electoral Setting; 2. The View from the Parties; 3. The Selling of the Parties; 4. The Performance of the Media; 5. Television; 6. The Role of the Local Media; 7. Opinion Polls; 8. Pressure Group Communication. A mix of academic research, expert experience and personal reflection, the chapters are written not only by academic scholars but by professionals from the worlds of advertising, polling, party organisation, press and television, and include pieces on the Conservative Party's campaign by its chairman at the time, Norman Tebbit, on the Labour Party's campaign by its Director of Communications, Peter Mandelson, and on the interviewing of political leaders by Sir Robin Day. Special attention is paid to the innovations that marked the 1987 campaign, including the celebrated Kinnock party election broadcast, the computerisation of constituency electioneering, equal broadcasting time for the three main parties, the eruption of constituency polling, and the TV 87 campaign for tactical voting. Dust jacket has some very light rubbing, and a little darkening to inside flaps. Overall in very good, clean condition. xv, 316 pp. 235 x 160 mm (9Πx 6Πinches).
