Breaking up the "Duncan"

Zinc engraving. 54,5cm x 82,2cm. One of 125 proofs published, on thick wove with wide margins, signed in pencil, titled in pencil lower right margin. After publication, the plates were destroyed. The plate was etched on the spot in the winter of 1911. Plate 193 in William Gaunt's "The etchings of Frank Brangwyn: A catalogue raisonné." H.M.S. Duncan was built in 1892 and broken up at Castle's yard in 1911. This limited edition, originally owned by a friend of Brangwyn, has been part of a collection of the artist's work built over 50 years. Born in Bruges in 1867, Brangwyn exhibited at the Royal Academy for the first time aged only 18. From the 1890's he produced profuse book illustrations and etchings. He died in 1957. .
