A collection of four of the writings of Anne-Louis-Henri de La Fare (1752-1829), Bishop of Nancy and deputy of the clergy in the Estates General of 1789. He is the author in 1789 of a work entitled "Political considerations on the temporal goods of the clergy", at the head of which he placed a sentence from Mirabeau: "the invention of suppressing and destroying is the absolute opposite of the art of governing." The four works are: (1) Refutation of the Apology of the Decrees of the National Assembly on the civil constitution of the Clergy, by Mr. Lalande; By Mr. the Curé of *** [Méréville District of Nancy]. 1791 [no publisher noted] - 53 pp. [There is no record of this on FirstSearch / Worldcat]. (2) Motion on the suppression of religious orders, By the Bishop of Nancy [undated/ no publisher noted] - 20 pp. [Conforms to OCLC: 492113504]. (3) Pastoral letter from the Bishop of Nancy... concerning the delivery of the new Civic Oath, to MM. the Priests of the Episcopal City, & all the faithful Clergy of their Diocese [undated / no publisher noted]. [There is no record of this on FirstSearch / Worldcat] - 25 pp. (4) Description of the funeral ceremony held on the Fields of the Federation, for our Brothers in Arms who died in Nancy, last August 31 [undated / Caillot et Courcier] - 8 pp. in original blue paper wrappers. [There is no record of this on FirstSearch / Worldcat]. The four pieces are bound in a quarter cloth with marbled boards. leather label to the spine with gilt title "Écrits de Mgr. De La Fare." The titles of works have been anglicised for this description. Please see our French translation below for the original titles. The binding and the four works are all in very good, clean condition. 225 by 140mm (8Ÿ by 5œ inches). De la Fare spoke against the Assembly in its attempts to laicise priests. He went into exile in 1791, mainly to Vienna, and only returned on the restoration in 1814.
