-
A lovely hand coloured pochoir taken from the "Album Le Grand Monde à l'Envers." (Second series) Published in 1919. Sem published this album immediately after the war. When the creation of Income Tax had terrified the wealthy, Sem had imagined the great and the good of this world reduced to small jobs, each in his own speciality. In the Café de l'Opera, two gentleman in evening dress perform "hunt the ball" tricks. Below is a large man beside his bicycle, watching the beach. To the reverse, a lady is renting out bathing costumes. There is also a man on a bike selling L'Avenir and a gentleman selling Le Gaulois. Nice print. The colours are bright. (These pochoirs were printed with some colour and were hand finished). A good, clean sheet, slight marking only. 52 by 33 cm. A copy of this print is held in the wonderful Les Musées de la ville de Paris. Inventory: G.20661-1 SEM - Georges Goursat (18631934), was a French caricaturist famous during the Belle Époque.
