Engraved portrait of a Pope in Sanguine

Paris Chez Bennet 1790 Un bel exemple de gravure à la sanguine de Bennet, d'après un dessin original de Joseph Marie Vien. Cette gravure n'est pas datée, mais elle indique que Vien est un professeur sous la protection du roi. Il a occupé le poste de "Premier peintre du Roi" de 1789 à 1791. Bon état, propre, avec un peu de noircissement et de froissement sur les bords seulement. Légère usure des bords. Le numéro 81 est imprimé en haut à gauche. Nous n'avons pas été en mesure d'identifier le pape représenté, et la seule image en ligne qui correspond à cette estampe a une attribution erronée. Il s'agit d'une grande feuille de 51 cm sur 40 cm (20 sur 15Ÿ pouces).

A lovely example of a sanguine engraving by Bennet, after an original design of Joseph Marie Vien. Undated, but states that Vien is a professor under the protection of the King. He held the role of "Premier peintre du Roi" from 1789-1791. Good, clean condition, with a little darkening and creasing to the edges only. Slight edgewear. It is printed No. 81 to the top left. We have been unable to identify which pope is pictured, and the only image online that matches this print has erroneous attribution. A large sheet, 51cm by 40cm (20 by 15Ÿ inches). .
