Abrégé de l'histoire des Turcs. Complete in three volumes.
-
Fourth edition, with portrait illustrations. A very nice set of this three volume edition. Full leather with gilt titles and decoration to the spine. There is a little rubbing and bumping to the boards, with slight cracking to the spine edge. Contains three engraved frontispieces, 24 engraved portrait copperplates (one for each of the emperors, and naturally for George Castriot of Scanderberg, the King of Albania), and 1 multi-folded copper map showing the Battle of Saint Gotthard. Comprehensive work with an overview of the origins of the Turks, their religion, their customs, the "extent of the empire", as well as a description of the reign of each emperor from Osman I, founder of the dynasty, to "Mehmed IV", the reigning emperor at the time of publication. Internally, the work is generally in very good condition, with a little marking and edgewear to some pages. The large folding map has had a long tear across it repaired with archival tape. Now barely visible (see photo). The title states "enriched in this fourth edition with their intaglio portraits and increased by several beautiful curious remarks on the present state of the Ottoman Empire, which have not been inserted in the others." We have been unable to find a WorldCat / OCLC entry for the three volumes of this edition (only for individual volumes). 16.5cm x 10cm. Collation: [viii], 544, [xxiv]., [iv], 528, [xxiv]., [iv], 633, [xxvix]. folding engraving. Text in French. A rare work in any edition, there are no copies currently for sale, and we could find no auction records for this edition. .
