Two full years (104 issues) of the weekly colour illustrated supplement for Gil Blas. Hardback binding with buckram spine and marbled boards. Contains: 1 - 52, 6 January - 29 December 1899, BOUND TOGETHER WITH: 1-52, 5 January 1900 - 28 December 1900. Most illustrations (some colour) by Steinlen. Each individual issue is 8 pages. Each has a coloured front page, several pages of text, then a double illustrated page, with one in black and white, and the other (usually a song or poetry lyric) in colour. Pages age toned but in good shape otherwise. Binding rubbed at edges, particularly to the rear board. overall good. 40 x 28 cm. A heavy item - almost 5kg packed. Founded in Paris on November 19, 1879, by Auguste Dumont, Gil Blas was a daily newspaper known for its lively, literary, and sometimes risqué tone. The paper drew its name and inspiration from Alain-René Lesage's picaresque novel Histoire de Gil Blas de Santillane. Gil Blas was also known for its illustrated weekly supplement, which contributed to its popularity and inspired similar publications abroad, such as the German satirical magazine Simplicissimus. .
