"Lettres d'une Péruvienne" (Letters from a Peruvian Woman) a novel by Françoise de Graffigny, first published in 1747. The story is told through letters written by Zilia, a young Inca woman who is kidnapped by Spanish conquistadors and forcibly taken from Peru to France. After being bought by a French officer named Déterville, she is introduced to French society, where she gradually learns to navigate and critique her new environment while longing for her fiancé Aza, separated from her by the conquest. The novel is notable for its critical perspective on 18th-century French society, religion, education, women's status, and politics, all explored through the eyes of Zilia, who offers an outsider's view. The narrative highlights a quest for knowledge and self-emancipation as Zilia learns French and adapts, ultimately rejecting the traditional submissive role expected of women. This ending was controversial in its time but has since been recognized for its proto-feminist stance. "Lettres d'une Péruvienne" was immensely popular in its era, translated into multiple languages and influencing European literature, though it later slipped into obscurity until regained attention from feminist literary critics in the 20th century. The novel can be seen as both a sentimental narrative and a critique of cultural and gender norms in Enlightenment-era France. .
