An architectural view.

Austria S.P. 1942 Première édition. Une ravissante aquarelle représentant une vue architecturale. Elle montre un grand édifice de style classique, ressemblant à une église, avec des fontaines dans chacune des arcades et des statues devant le bâtiment. Magnifiquement exécutée, elle est signée en bas à droite par le lieutenant Biscop. Il s'identifie comme le prisonnier n° 1838 de l'Oflag XVII A. Il précise également que le tableau a été remis aux Allemands le 29 juillet 1942. Il semblerait que Biscop ait eu accès à du matériel et ait été autorisé à peindre, à condition de remettre l'uvre achevée à ses geôliers. Nous n'avons pas pu identifier le bâtiment représenté. Compte tenu des circonstances dans lesquelles il a été dessiné, il pourrait s'agir d'un édifice idéal, plutôt que d'un lieu réel. L'Oflag XVII-A était un camp de prisonniers de guerre allemand situé près d'Edelbach et de Döllersheim, dans l'actuelle Autriche. Il accueillait principalement des officiers français capturés après la bataille de France et fut libéré en mai 1945. Le camp était réputé pour l'éducation des prisonniers, ses activités culturelles et ses tentatives d'évasion. C'est peut-être dans ce contexte que le peintre fut autorisé à consacrer du temps à la réalisation de vues architecturales. L'uvre indique que le peintre était un élève de Pontienioli Leconte. Il semblerait qu'il s'agisse d'une référence à l'école des beaux-arts « l'atelier Pontrémoli ». Fondée à Paris par Emmanuel PONTRÉMOLI (18651956), qui y enseignait, l'école fut ensuite confiée à André (Alphonse, Léon) Leconte (1894-1966), qui en prit la direction en 1942. L'uvre fait également référence à Lablande el Vassao, que nous n'avons pas pu identifier. Verso vierge. Le chiffre 162 a été inscrit d'une petite écriture au crayon sur le bord gauche, mais sans aucune indication quant à sa signification. 600 × 840 mm (23œ × 33 pouces). Dans l'ensemble en excellent état, avec une légère tache sur le bord supérieur.

First edition. A lovely water colour of an architectural view. It shows a large, classical building, Church like, with fountains in each of the arches and statues in front of the building. Beautifully executed, and signed to the bottom right by Lt Biscop. He identifies himself as prisoner #1838 at Oflag XVII A. He also states that the painting was handed over to the Germans on 29th July 1942. It would seem that Biscop was permitted materials and allowed to paint, if he gave the finished work to his captors. We have not been able to identify the building shown. Given the circumstances in which it was drawn, it may represent an ideal building, rather than an actual place. Oflag XVII-A was a German prisoner of war camp near Edelbach and Döllersheim in present-day Austria. It held mainly French officers captured after the Battle of France and was liberated in May 1945. The camp became known for prisoner education, cultural activity, and escape efforts. It was perhaps in this context that the painter was permitted to spend time painting architectural views. The work states that the painter was a student at Pontienioli Leconte. This would seem to be a reference to the school of fine arts l'atelier Pontrémoli. Established in Paris by Emmanuel PONTRÉMOLI (18651956) who taught, and later handed over the studio to André (Alphonse, Léon) Leconte (1894-1966) He took the control of the studio in 1942. There is also a reference to Lablande el Vassao which we have been unable to identify. Blank to verso. The number 162 has been written in a small hand in crayon to the left edge, but without any clue as to its meaning. 600 by 840mm (23œ by 33 inches). Overall in excellent condition, with a touch of minor staining to the top edge. .
