A woodcut from the Kunstbüchlin / Little Book of Art
-
A beautiful woodcut by Jost Amman. This originally appeared as page Piii (verso) (page 131) of the book printed in 1599. Our copy is a later printing. There is a black border around the image which is not present in the original book. Nevertheless, this is a good impression printed onto heavy, chain link paper. Lighted tipped onto blue backing paper. An attractive image of children. Two are reading from a horn book, and using a pointer stick to follow the line. Another child is sat with a cat. Foliage and a cross are in the background. 100 by 110mm (4 by 4Πinches). In excellent condition, with just a tiny foxing spot to the image. Printmaker and illustrator Jost Amman (1539-1591). Swiss / German Printmaker and illustrator. Among his best known works is an illustrated book of perspectives of polyhedra, Perspectiva corporum regularium, written by Wenzel Jamnitz in 1568 and considered one of the most "lavish of the perspective books published in the Germany in the late sixteenth century." .
