Trois femmes tirées de *Le vrai et le faux chic*.
-
First edition. An attractive pochoir, taken from "Le vrai et le faux chic", a book of caricatures by SEM published in 1914. This copy has been signed by SEM to the bottom right in pencil. We have put an example of the published pochoir in our photos here, which shows that in the book, the two lines had no signature above. Now framed in a black frame, under glass and passe partout border. The lithograph is in very good condition, with fractional handling and marking to it. The pass partout and clean are in excellent condition. Visible area of lithograph is 38cm x 29cm. The frame is 50cm x 40. Not examined out of frame. In "Le vrai et le faux chic" SEM sketches pre-war women's fashion and denounces 'the ridiculous aspect' of false chic (pioneered by innovative couturiers who 'convey their unbridled fantasy'). He contrasts this with true chic, characterised by "harmonious and discreet simplicity." SEM - Georges Goursat (18631934), was a French caricaturist famous during the Belle Époque. As well as the caricatures which made him famous, he created work in a very different style as a correspondent during World War I. His later work was very influenced by the "Jazz Age" and high society in Paris during the 1920's. .
