HISTOIRE DE NAPOLÉON, DU CONSULAT ET DE L'EMPIRE
-
First edition thus. Three volumes, complete set of the Penaud Fréres expanded edition. Contemporary half-leather with gilt-tooled spines in compartments, raised bands, black morocco lettering-pieces to each volume lettered in gilt "HISTOIRE DE NAPOLÉON / CONSULAT / ET EMPIRE" with volume numbers IIII. Illustrated throughout with 29 hand-coloured plates and 50 black-and-white engraved plates (79 plates in total), all present and matching the printed table of contents. This is a full and complete set of illustrations, which is by no means always the case with copies of this scarce work on the market. Condition: A very good, sound set. Light to moderate foxing throughout, as is usual and expected in French illustrated books of this period; the text remains clean and entirely legible, and the plates are unaffected beyond the general toning consistent with age. Tissue guards to each plate (a little ragged). Bindings solid and firmly attached, with only light wear to the extremities and spine ends see photographs. An attractive, well-matched set that has clearly been well cared for. A substantial and handsomely illustrated popular history of Napoleon's Consulate and Empire, published by the Penaud Frères in the mid-nineteenth century and scarce as a complete set with the full complement of plates, particularly with the hand-colouring still bright and unfaded as here. No copies of the complete set available at the time of cataloguing. IV, 712., 316, 336. Pages.
