Woodcut device on title, with 509 woodcut illustrations in text. Rebound in old vellum, (with old stitched holes at the back cover), endpapers renewed, bookblock untouched, edges red speckled, old leather title label on spine. Title page soiled and thumbed (as first index leaves), small paper restoration in lower righthand corner of title (3 cm²), some old manuscript notes in ink and in different hands on title. Approx. 15 leaves at the end with clear marginal waterstains, in all still a good copy, with most of the pages crisp and all printed on heavy paper. Provenance; the book must have crossed the Channel at an early date. The first 250 pp contain notes in ink, in an old hand, giving the names of the plants in English, and some translations of french words. On the title page the name '' Edward Davies '' , on pp 8 in the margin the name '' Edward Esterlinge ''. On pp. 14 in the margin '' Edward Esterlinge - Vaughan Davies ''. Leonard Fuchs published in Basel in 1542 his celebrated herbal, which may be considered the start of modern botany. It was as revolutionary in this science as Copernicus' and Vesalius' studies on cosmology and anatomy. By coincidence they were published one year later. This is the first French translation. Plein veau 16éme, double filet doré encadrant les plats, dos à nerfs ornés et titré à lor, tranches jaspées de rouge. (Quelques discrétes restaurations aux mors).
