The last 144 pages contain the 'pièces justificatives' and contain 17 motions and 'opinions' by the author.Lally-Tollendal was an Anglophile and became deputy to the Estates General and the National Assembly. Popular in the early stages of the revolution, because of his decision to join the deputies of the Third Estate, with forty-six other aristocrats, in defiance of the king's orders, his reputation began to detoriate because of his close association with the moderate royalists known as anglomanes or monarchiens. He denounced the murder by a Parisian crowd of the hated royal intendant Bertier de Sauvigny, It was in response to his impassioned speech that Barnave uttered the famed words, "Was that blood then, so pure that it was such a great crime to spill it?" In the months that followed, Lally continued to call for the suppression of lawlessness and supported the increasingly unpopular policies of the anglomanes. He declared himself in favor of a two-house legislature, an absolute royal veto, and a reconsideration of legislation ending aristocratic privileges. When the King and the Assembly were forced to move to Paris in October 1789, Lally fled to Switzerland and opposed the revolution for more than two years from exile.
