Édition parisienne augmentée de 1535 (EO : Venise, 1483) de ce cet ouvrage dhistoire universelle rarement complet dû à Jacopo Filippo Foresti (1434-1520), moine augustin, théologien, chroniqueur et historien italien, plus connu sous le nom de Jacques-Philippe de Bergame. Cet ouvrage très ambitieux retrace lhistoire du monde connu et ses faits les plus notables depuis sa création en 6 jours, illustré de 13 bois finement gravés et inclus dans le texte. Il fait notamment mention de la très controversée papesse Jeanne au feuillet 255 où lon peut lire dans la marge Ioãnes papa foemina, cette page est dès lors très souvent arrachée par censure contrairement au présent exemplaire. Cette nouvelle édition est augmentée de plusieurs chapitres dont la récente découverte des Amériques : "De quatuor permaximis insulis in India extra orbem nuper inventis..." (f. 412). Jacopo Filippo Foresti naît en 1434 à Solto Collina, près de Bergame, dune famille noble. Après avoir terminé ses études avec un grand succès, il entre en 1451 dans lordre des ermites de Saint-Augustin, et en reçoit lhabit des mains de Jean Nibbia, de Novare, lun des fondateurs de lordre en Italie. Dès lors, il partage son temps entre les devoirs de son état et la recherche des monuments historiques du Moyen ge. Il forme ainsi des recueils précieux qui lui sont dun grand secours pour la rédaction de louvrage quil médite. Il ne propose alors rien moins que de croiser les récits dhistoriens et ainsi réaliser une sorte dhistoire universelle. Cest donc dans cette entreprise quil publie son Supplementum chronicorum orbis, le présent ouvrage, qui eut un grand succès, et qui, malgré ses nombreux défauts, mérite encore dêtre consulté, surtout pour les faits dont lauteur a été le témoin. La réputation de Foresti devait le porter aux premières dignités de son ordre mais il les refusa toutes pour se livrer plus tranquillement à létude, et ce fut malgré lui quil accepta la direction momentanée des couvents dImola, de Forlì et enfin de Bergame. Toute sa vie, il chercha à inspirer à ses confrères le goût des lettres, et il forma dans le couvent de Bergame une bibliothèque. Foresti y meurt le 15 juin 1520, à lâge de 86 ans. Enlarged Paris edition of 1535 (OE: Venice, 1483) of this rarely complete work of universal history by Jacopo Filippo Foresti (1434-1520), an Italian Augustinian monk, theologian, chronicler and historian, better known as Jacques-Philippe de Bergame. This ambitious work retraces the history of the known world and its most notable events since its creation in 6 days, illustrated with 13 finely engraved woodcuts included in the text. In particular, it mentions the controversial papess Jeanne on folio 255, where the margin reads Ioãnes papa foemina, a page which, unlike the present copy, is often torn out due to censorship. Jacopo Filippo Foresti was born into a noble family in Solto Collina, near Bergamo, in 1434. After completing his studies with great success, in 1451 he joined the order of hermits of Saint Augustine, receiving the habit from Jean Nibbia of Novara, one of the order's founders in Italy. From then on, he divided his time between the duties of his state and research into the historical monuments of the Middle Ages. In this way, he compiled a number of invaluable collections, which were of great help in drafting the work he had in mind. He proposed nothing less than to cross-reference historians' accounts and thus create a kind of universal history. It was with this in mind that he published his Supplementum chronicorum orbis, the present work, which was a great success, and which, despite its many faults, is still worth consulting, especially for the facts witnessed by the author. Foresti's reputation was to lead him to the highest dignities of his order, but he refused them all to devote himself more quietly to study, and it was against his will that he accepted the temporary direction of the convents of Imola, Forlì and finally Bergamo. Throughout his life, he sought to inspire his confreres with a taste for literature, and set up a library in the Bergamo convent. Foresti died there on June 15, 1520, at the age of 86. A rarely complete copy of this ambitious work.
