First edition of this highly esteemed French adaptation and translation of Quintilian’s De oratoria institutione libri XII by the professor of rhetoric Nicolas Gédoyn (1667-1744). Gedoyn’s performance containing many allusions to contemporaries, “deserves great praise; he seems to have been extremely anxious to express the sense of his author, and is said to have spent ten years over his task ... The French translation published by Nisard, 1853, in his ‘Collection des Auteurs Latins’, is modelled on that of Gedoyn” (Lee Honeycutt, Quintilian’s Institutes of Oratory [Online Version]. - Slightly browned. - Contemporary calf, back on five raised bands, spine elaborately gilt with label (short [2 cm] wormtrack in foot of spine).
