Summary The subject of this publication is the treatise Aduersus Manichaeos, attributed to Evodius of Uzalis. Evodius was a friend and contemporary of Augustine of Hippo. The treatise Aduersus Manichaeos is an important source on the North African Catholic church and its polemics against the Manichaeans. Although the treatise is strongly influenced by the anti-Manichaean writings of Augustine of Hippo, it also offers much original and likely authentic information on the Manichaean movement. Thus far, however, no systematic study had been conducted on this anti-Manichaean treatise attributed to Evodius. As a result, some of its historical circumstances have been shrouded in mystery. The present volume reconstructs the circumstances in which Aduersus Manichaeos was written, and studies the treatise in relation to its fifth-century North African context. The study offers a literary, historical and theological analysis of Aduersus Manichaeos. The publication also complements the study of Aduersus Manichaeos with a new critical edition of the original Latin text, with a facing English translation.

Summary While the city of Gerasa - modern-day Jerash - is perhaps best known for the impressive remains left by its Roman inhabitants, the Byzantine and Umayyad periods (fifth-eighth centuries AD) were also eras during which the city blossomed and its population boomed. Summary The Graeco-Roman Decapolis city of Gerasa was a flourishing centre of population from the Late Hellenistic up to the Early Islamic period. It was also home to a vibrant ceramics industry. Kilns found throughout the city, with a concentration in the Hippodrome, suggest that Gerasa was in fact a mass-production centre in the Decapolis region over a number of centuries, manufacturing a vast array of material to suit the changing needs of daily life. Drawing on finds yielded during excavations by the Danish-German Northwest Quarter Project and other archaeological projects, as well as the research undertaken within the Ceramics in Context project, this volume evaluates the pottery from Gerasa produced in the Late Hellenistic and Roman periods. Typology, development over time, and variations in the Gerasene pottery are explored, and rare examples of imported material are analysed in order to shed light both on the inner workings of the city, and on the networks that extended beyond Gerasa's walls. Summary Gerasa/Jerash and the Decapolis are located along the seismically active area of the Dead Sea Rift, a point where four tectonic plates meet to create the 110 km-long fault known as the Dead Sea Transform. It was activity along this fault that led, in AD 749, to a famously devastating earthquake in the region. Measuring at least 7.0 on the Richter scale, this quake not only had a profound physical impact on the Decapolis, Galilee, Caesarea, and Jerusalem, causing widespread destruction and reshaping urban landscapes, but also led to a clear shift in socio-economic dynamics through a combination of economic decline and population displacement. It thus stands as a clear watershed moment in Late Antiquity. In its aftermath, some cities struggled to regain prominence, while others declined and were abandoned. Taking the AD 749 earthquake as its starting point, this volume aims to provide a nuanced understanding of the quake's effects, questioning its role as a sole watershed moment and exploring the various other factors at play that influenced urban change. Summary This book questions the place of Armenian visual and material culture in the period known as Late Antiquity, at a time when Armenia is usually presented as an in-between space defined by surrounding external entities: the Roman and the Persian, and later Arab world. Summary This volume brings together contributions concerning the figure of Irenaeus (ca 130-ca 200), a Christian author from Asia minor, Greek by language and culture, who spent the second part of his life "among the Celts", "in the neighbouring regions of the Rh ne", to use his own words. It seems quite probable that Irenaeus' route from East to West passed through Rome and that he stayed there for some time. Therefore the papers in this volume, by researchers of various origins, are grouped into three parts corresponding to these three geographical areas - Asia, Rome, Gaul - and their respective cultural contexts. Most of the papers adopt a general historical approach in exploring various dimensions of Irenaeus' context: cultural and literary life in Asia, especially in Smyrna; multilingualism in the Roman Empire; the attraction of Rome for scholars, philosophers and rhetoricians of Greek origin; the expansion of Lyon in the second century and the flourishing of its economic and cultural life. Other contributions focus on the contemporary presence of various religious components, in particular on Jewish traditions and on the vicissitudes and organization of the first Christian communities, with attention to Gnostic groups. The papers are preceded by an original biographical account of Irenaeus, newly proposed on the basis of indications provided by his own work. Summary Using the tools of contemporary linguistics, the present book studies the Classical quotes found in Augustine's City of God - mainly from Cicero, Sallust, Varro, and Virgil - and tries to show how they fully contribute to the development of his thought. This study is divided in three stages, so many as there are connections to Augustine and his work. It first tries to show how exactly the quotes appear in the text - a notion defined as 'the copresence of two statements'. The second part examines the polyphony created in the work by these secondary voices, which are analysed in close relation with the book's context of reception. It finally seems that, far from encouraging digression, this 'poetics of otherness' contributes to the development of a discourse whose order acts as a guarantee of truth, and is therefore at the heart of the book's apolegetic intention. Thus, being nurtured by an internalised and theatralised dialogue, Augustine's text makes fruitful use of these sources as a means to draw - at least in part - the conclusion that pagan philosophy is an aporia. This study includes an appendix and a transcription of the Classical quotes found in the City of God, along with their contexts and philological annotations.
