Adeline Yen Mah

London, Michael Joseph, 1997. First edition of Adeline Yen Mah's first autobiographic book, signed by her with a blue pen on the title page. Octavo, 225 x 140 mm, (ix) 278 pp. Green cloth hardcover with dust jacket. Signed in Chinese and English by Ms Yen Mah. Book in good condition. Edges show very tiny dots, a little foxing on the first pages near the spine, bottom of the DJ lightly crumpled, margins slightly yellowed. Binding is in very good shape, paper clean, DJ is crisp and well protected beneath its original mylar.

A heartbreaking book, this True Story tells of a very bad in start fraught with desperation and doing everything to get out of one's condition. The author claims writing the book was difficult but she felt compelled to do so. Since then, while the book sold in the hundreds of thousands of copies, Adeline Yen Mah only appeared a very few times in public and rarely signed her work. This is a beautiful signed copy of her most important book, 1st edition.

Alexander Caldcleugh

London, John Murray on Albemarle Street, 1825. First edition. Two volumes, 230 x 148 mm, (xii) 373 + (viii) 380 pp. Recently rebound in half morocco leather with 5 raised bands, author's name, title, volume number and year stamped in gold, marbled papers on covers and as endpapers. Headbands. Volume I features a picture of two masked women as "The Usual Walking Costume of Lima", a short preface, 12 chapters, 5 colored plates and an unfolding map of South America. Volume II features four color plates, including a frontispiece as well, chapters 13-19, no less than 26 appendixes and a very long folding map. "Caldcleugh came to Brazil as private secretary to the British Ambassador, Edward Thornton. From October, 1819, until 1821 he lived in Rio, and from there travelled to Argentina and Chile. His return journey again took him through Brazil, and this time he visited Minas Geraes which he describes on pp. 178-288 of the second volume. Caldcleugh's work has great documentary value. An excellent and impartial observer, he describes Rio de Janeiro with great accuracy, and studies the social, agricultural, financial, and political situations in Brazil. The part referring to the mines in Minas Geraes is of great interest. The first volume contains two very beautiful views of Rio de Janeiro." A very good and elegant copy. Some pages show some browning and occasional small defects on the margins with no loss to the pictures, content or the recently rebacked sturdy binding.

Alexis Carrel

New York, Harper & Brothers, 1939. 2nd edition with a new introduction. A blue hardback volume, 213 x 147 mm, (xxv) 346 pp. Smooth spine with no mention written. SIGNED in French by William Close and his wife Tina on the half-title page. Their dedication says: "Tu ma vue [sic], puis tu a acheté ce livre !!! à un type magnifique, avec l'espérance qu'on se verra encore. Bill Close et sa petite femme Tina Close" (translation: "You saw me, then you bought this book!!! To an awesome guy, I hope we will meet again. Bill Close and his cute wife Tina"). Inscription from 1944 written on the title page. Contents list at the beginning. Introduction, Preface and eight chapters, the eighth being the most famous for some idea which would get out of the Overton window. "William Taliaferro Close (June 7, 1924 – January 15, 2009) was an American surgeon who played a major role in stemming a 1976 outbreak of the Ebola virus in Zaire, the first major outbreak of the viral hemorrhagic fever in Central Africa, and preventing its further spread. He was also the father of Oscar-nominated actress Glenn Close and husband of Bettine Moore Close." (Wikipedia) Dr. Close's efforts proved instrumental in breaking the chain of transmission of the Ebola virus during a pandemic, saving thousands of lives, and investigated the progress of the AIDS pandemic soon after. Close wrote four books, which included chronicles of his experiences as a doctor in Zaire and Wyoming.

Some foxing throughout, otherwise all legible with no marking of any kind past the title page. A trace of William Close's adventurous, innovative and actually philanthropic life.

An oblong, softbound book of 21.5 x 14 cm, 133 pp. SIGNED in Spanish by Betty Haoa with a blue ink ballpen on the title page: "Para Francisco, de parde de Betty Hoao, 12.03.97" First and only edition. Written in English and Spanish. With a few black and white illustrations, the basics of Rapanui grammar and lists of words. Seal of the Easter Island Foundation on the back cover. Originally from Easter Island, Betty Haoa was educated in Chile. She graduated as a kinesiologist from the Catholic University of the North in Antofagasta (Chile) in 1982. Since 1993, she's been the head of the William Mulloy Library (Easter Island).

Some rubbing and color loss on the red frontcover, title page is yellowed, inside is clean. A scarce title, even more bearing the signature of the author.

Some of the essays printed here had never been published before. With a foreword by Seyyed Hossein Nasr. Hardcover in editor's light grey cloth and dust jacket. Essays on "The Pertinence of Philosophy", "On Being in One's Right Mind", "Windows of the Soul", "Fate, Foresight and Free-will" and so on.

Paper is clean and bright, binding firm. Aside from light pencil marginalia in the first essay, looks unread. In fine condition.

Andrew Grant

Octavo, 210 x 130 mm, (6) 304 pp. Bound in original quarter brown morocco with corners, spine with 5 raised bands, wine-colored title piece with author's name and title in gold as well as a double gilt fillet on the higher and lower extremities of the piece, year on the bottom of spine. Purple marbled dishes with tons of yellow and bluish waves. Headband. Title page, dedication to the "merchants of Great Britain", Advertisement and table of contents at the beginning of the book. Twelve chapters followed by two appendices (and not just one as indicated in the table) with "Medical advice for Europeans who emigrate to Brazil" and indications on the coins, change and commodity prices. Rebound in brown half-leather with a soft spine with gilt, modern-printed author's name and book title on it. Colored endpapers, no original cover, photograph of President Rodrigues Da Fonseca in frontispiece. Many photographic pictures printed on a different, whiter paper facing the text. Folding table p. 23. This book belonged to the library of the Laboratório Nacional de Análises. Two red library stamps, one on the first page and one on the last, the latter featuring another library stamp with a pen note. A concise yet detailed snapshot on the rubber industry in Brazil right before the First World War began. The author of this book is the father of Newton Carneiro (1914-1987), a Brazilian politician who was elected deputy for the state of Curitiba and led sections of the Rotary Club and Alliance Française.

First photographic page disbound, foxing throughout. Still - all text is legible and the photograph pictures are crisp and clean.

Art Critic on the Shelf

2017, no mention of city or editor. An oblong 211 x 248 mm octavo volume, 79 pp. Hardcover. A mention on the spine: "Art Agency, Partners - Artoon Collection 2017". Grey endpapers, the first showing an printed signature of the artist. The book is full "artoons" satirizing life in the world of contemporary art. There are almost no mentions of it over the Internet so it seems like a rare album, only published for a handful of friends or associated of the "Art Agency".

In very good condition. Small bump on the back top head, aside from that pages are crisp and clean, almost like new.

The mention of "translation from Italian" seems to continue the game of masks initiated by the original French edition.

Green hardcover, no jacket, title written in gold on the spine with author's and editor's name above and below. Green vertical bands at the double title page. Table of contents at the beginning of the book. An interesting work on American entrepreneurs and the United Fruit company. Written before the smear campaign which tarnished the company's reputation, a true tale of human action and interactions amidst exotic places.

Very small foxing on the first pages, aside from that the binding is firm and the book in very good condition.

Pages with text are decorated with head and tailbands. Numerous drawings and texts written in prose. Symbol of the Zeta Psi, Kappa Alpha, Chi Phi, Delta Upsilon, Delta Gamma and other fraternities with catalogs of members.

The fraternity symbol pages show pronounced yellowing. A bit of wear and tear on the front cover and hinge. In good condition. Scarce. More pictures on request.

Un volume in-4 relié, 305 x 245 mm, (xxii) 208 pp. Relié pleine toile noire éditeur, titre embossé ton sur ton sur le plat de couverture, jaquette illustrée. Avec des textes de François Mitterrand, Jacques Toubon, Jack Lang, etc. Abondamment illustré de photos couleur du chantier, de plans, coupes et photos de lieux emblématiques de la BNF une fois celle-ci terminée. "En 1988, le président de la République François Mitterrand, dans la continuité des Grands travaux qui ont ponctué ses septennats, souhaite un établissement d'un genre encore inédit, capable tout à la fois de répondre aux besoins documentaires identifiés, et de proposer un espace public de vie, de travail et de découverte au cœur de la dynamique urbaine d'un quartier en construction. Dès 1989, à l'issue d'un concours international, l’architecte français Dominique Perrault est désigné lauréat, sur la base de son projet qui fait dialoguer l'architecture « groundscape » (l'aménagement du sous-sol comme principe urbain) avec l'édification de tours, le vide central avec la monumentalité des bâtiments, la minéralité de l'acier, du béton et du verre, avec la respiration organique du bois et du jardin intérieur. Paper a little yellow with some slight creasing. Signed page in good condition. Solid binding. Scarce biographical work, written well before the 2006 version.

Boston, Little Brown and Company, 1977. Vol. 2 only of this nowadays scarce set. In-4, 285 x 225 mm, (8 ff.) 922 pp. A heavy 3.5 kgs volume about facial surgery. Lavishly illustrated with black and white drawings and pictures as well as a few colored photographs. Hardcover blue cloth, no DJ as issued. Top edge gilt, headband, signet. Text block lightly soiled, a very small hole (insect bite) throughout, some wear and tear on the spine, otherwise a good volume with a crisp and clean interior.

A reference title in otolaryngology and for facial health/aesthetics specialists!

Hong Kong, Union Press Limited, 1970. Large and thin softcover book of 19 x 26 cm 89 pp. Extremely scarce. Written in English and Chinese. Profusely illustrated in black and white. A small defect on the right corner of the front cover, which shows some discoloration. Small white label at the bottom of the spine. Of note: the table of content shows the word "CONTNETS" as a title.

Eliahou Eric Bokobza

This is a catalogue of an exposition of paintings and artworks by Eliahou Eric Bokobza, with explanatory texts in English. In-4, 308 x 250 mm, 141 (3) pp. Bradel-style hardcover with colorful boards. Title written in Hebrew on spine. Printed on couché paper. Foreword by Orit Shaham-Gover, text "Kol Israel Haverim (All Jews are Friends): Multiple Jewish Identities in the Work of Eric Bokobza" by Smadar Sheffi. "Bokobza grapples with the weighty concept of kol Yisrael haverim and the contrasting elements of what he calls his “mixed identity”—his Tunisian-French-Israeli heritage, Oriental and Occidental cultures, his experience with religion and mysticism as a secular Jew— in “United Colors.” The exhibit is modeled after traditional museum exhibitions of Judaica, said Bokobza, which typically divide Jewish ritual objects into Jewish holiday and life cycle sections... “In each painting, I’m showing what my secular experience as a Jew in Israel was like” he said." Light soiling and bumps on the front cover, otherwise very good. No foxing and no markings.

Ernest Mancoba [about], Bridget Thompson and others

Johannesburg, Art and Ubuntu Trust, 2006. In-8 booklet, 17 x 24 cm, 126 pp. Softcover with rigid silver metal-like covers. Handwritten mention "NEW AFRICAN ARTISTS - ERNEST MANCOBA" on the spine. Book is SIGNED by curator Bridget Thompson on the back of the front cover: "Dear Milton, With great appreciation for our work together and [illegible] for images, with love, Bridget". Printed on coated glossy paper, numerous artworks by Ernest Mancoba showcased, texts by various authors including the Ambassador of Denmark Torben Brylle and the "Funeral Oration" said in honor of the artist on November 2, 2022. "In the Name of All Humanity: The African Spiritual Expression of E. Mancoba" was a landmark 2006–2007 exhibition and catalogue curated by Bridget Thompson, highlighting South African artist Ernest Mancoba's synthesis of African spirituality, humanity, and Western modernism. It showcased his life's work as a vision of global unity rooted in the proverb “umuntu ngumuntu ngabanye abantu” (a person is a person because of other people).

Covers are slightly worn and soiled, the inside shows a very slight yellowing on the margins of white pages. Colored pages are pristine. A very good copy, personally offered by curator Bridget Thompson to a dear friend.

Eustace Clarence Mullins

First edition of the revised version of a text previously published in 1952. This is the first edition of this book and the definitive one which millions today know about. Union (NJ), Common Sense, 1954. A slim booklet of 15 x 21 cm, 144 pp. Hardbound, likely by a Brazilian binder, in full blue navy percaline, with Bradel-style hinges and the book name and title stamped in faint gold on the front cover and spine. Mention "2033" written in red behind the front cover, a big blue stamp "Order from The Thunderbolt, Inc." covering the original editor's information on the title page. Yellowed paper. Almost no foxing. No handwritten comments, not ex-library.

A unique copy. Its previous owner went the extra mile to have it hardbound!

Catalogue d'une exposition tenue à la galerie Alfred Kren de New York et consacrée aux ex-votos du nordeste brésilien, c'est-à-dire à des oeuvres fabriquées pour être données à un saint, à la Vierge, etc. en remerciement d'une prière ou d'un vœu réalisé. En noir et blanc, contient des photos de 54 ex votos ainsi que d'autres photographies. Textes de Fatima Bercht, photos de Glenn Steigelman et Giovanna et Francesco Del Brenna. Enrichi d'une ligne en portugais signée du galeriste Alfred Kren, qui consulte un libraire brésilien sur la viabilité d'une vente de plusieurs exemplaire de cette brochure au Brésil. Si Kren manifeste des doutes, en craignant que le prix au détail aux États-Unis devienne "une quantité exorbitante de cruzeiros brésiliens" après exportation, il apprécie suffisamment l'idée pour envoyer le présent exemplaire en cadeau au destinataire de la lettre. ****************** New York, Alfred Kren Gallery, 1985. Enriched with a letter in Portuguese signed by the gallery owner Alfred Kren, who asks a Brazilian bookseller about the viability of a sale of several copies of this brochure in Brazil. While Kren expresses doubts, fearing that the retail price in the United States will turn into "an exorbitant amount of Brazilian cruzeiros" once the booklets get exported, he likes the idea enough to send this copy as a gift to the recipient of the letter.
