Dissonanzen. Musik in der verwaltete Welt. 2., erweiterte Ausgabe. - [PRESENTATION-COPY](Göttingen, 1958). 8vo. Original self-wrappers. Slight discolouration to spine, otherwise near mint. Inscribed by Adorno to title-page. 143, (3) pp.
Second, expanded edition, presentation-copy, of Adorno's important essay about music paedagogy, which constitutes a comprehensive and utterly consistent exposition of the matter. With a three lines long presentation-inscription signed ""Th. W. Adorno"", dated ""Mai 1959""The important and influential German philosopher and sociologist, Theodor Ludwig Wiesengrund Adorno (1903 - 1969), was a leading member of the Frankfurt School, together with e.g. Horkheimer, Benjamin, and Habermas. He taught philosophy at the university of Frankfurt, but as a Jew, his teaching position was taken from him in 1933. He went to Oxford to teach, and in 1938 he emigrated to America, where he was the leader of several sociological projects in both New York and Los Angeles. Together with Horkheimer he wrote the theoretical manifest of the Frankfurt School, the ""Dialektik der Aufklärung"". I 1949 he returned to Frankfurt, where he became professor of philosophy and sociology. ""Theodor W. Adorno was one of the most important philosophers and social critics in Germany after World War II. Although less well known among anglophone philosophers than his contemporary Hans-Georg Gadamer, Adorno had even greater influence on scholars and intellectuals in postwar Germany. In the 1960s he was the most prominent challenger to both Sir Karl Popper's philosophy of science and Martin Heidegger's philosophy of existence. Jürgen Habermas, Germany's foremost social philosopher after 1970, was Adorno's student and assistant. The scope of Adorno's influence stems from the interdisciplinary character of his research and of the Frankfurt School to which he belonged. It also stems from the thoroughness with which he examined Western philosophical traditions, especially from Kant onward, and the radicalness to his critique of contemporary Western society. He was a seminal social philosopher and a leading member of the first generation of Critical Theory."" (SEP).

Orig. fulll brown cloth w. gilt lettering to spine and front board" original red dust-jacket w. a bit of sunning to spine, otherwise near perfect condition. A very nice, clean, and fresh copy. 251, (1) pp.
First edition, presentation-copy, of one of Adorno's most interesting and important works. With a five lines long presentation-inscription signed ""Th. W. Adorno"", dated ""Frankfurt, 16. November 1956.""Most of text was written between 1934 and 1937, when Adorno was not allowed to teach in Frankfurt, but parts of the book were written shortly before the first printing of the book, in 1956. The important and influential German philosopher and sociologist, Theodor Ludwig Wiesengrund Adorno (1903 - 1969), was a leading member of the Frankfurt School, together with e.g. Horkheimer, Benjamin, and Habermas. (SEP).In this anti-epistemological work, Adorno deals with the more general question of the possibility of truth and of epistemology in principle (""die Frage nach Möglichkeit und Wahrheit von Erkenntnistheorie prinzipiell"", Vorrede, p. 9), although the outer structure of the work is that of the philosophy of Husserl. Adorno comes to the conclusion that all epistemology is misguided, because it is based on some sort of ""prima philosophia"", an original or first principle, which cannot in reality be an absolutely first, because it is a concept, which is mediated. Adorno's work became hugely influential throughout philosophical and sociological circles, and his ""Zur Metakritik der Erkenntnistheorie"" (translated as ""Against Epistemology"") counts as one of his most important works. ""It inspired Habermas and Marcuse and continues to influence other eminent thinkers in philosophy and the social sciences today."" (From the English language translation by Willis Domingo).

Acte Général de la conférence de Berlin. - [THE GENERAL ACT OF THE BERLIN CONFERENCE 1885]Amsterdam, K.N.A.G., 1885. 8vo. In recent paper wrappers with brown title label pasted on the front wrappers. As extracted from ""Koninklijk Nederlands Aardrijkskundig Genootschap"". Vol. II. Very fine and clean. Pp. 213-228.
First printing of the first report on the The Berlin Conference (of 1884-85), also known as the Congo Conference or West Africa Conference. It sought to regulate European colonisation and trade in Africa during the New Imperialism period. The General Act of the Berlin Conference, can be seen as the formalization of the Scramble for Africa and is by far the most severe infringement ever on African sovereignty. The conference ushered in a period of heightened colonial activity by European powers, while simultaneously eliminating most existing forms of African autonomy and self-governance.""For at a time when an estimated 80% of Africa remained under traditional and local control, the purpose of the Berlin Conference had been for the Great Powers to establish rules amongst themselves for the colonization of Africa and the exploitation of Africa's resources. Including the division of territory, the drawing of maps, and the establishment of Congo -- as a personal possession of the Belgian King. Not surprisingly, no Africans had been invited to the Conference."" (Calmettes, Berlin 1885: The Division of Africa). ""Owing to the upsetting of Bismarck's carefully laid balance of power in European politics caused by Leopold's gamble and subsequent European race for colonies, Germany felt compelled to act and started launching expeditions of its own which frightened both British and French statesmen. Hoping to quickly soothe this brewing conflict, King Leopold II was able to convince France and Germany that common trade in Africa was in the best interests of all three countries. Under support from the British and the initiative of Portugal,Otto von Bismarck, German Chancellor, called on representatives of Austria-Hungary, Belgium, Denmark, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden-Norway (union until 1905), the Ottoman Empire and the United States to take part in the Berlin Conference to work out policy."" (Ngoyo, Federation of the Free States of Africa). The boarders drawn in Africa during the Berlin Conference had devastating consequences for Africa:"" ""The Berlin Conference was Africa's undoing in more ways than one. The colonial powers superimposed their domains on the African Continent. By the time Africa regained its independence after the late 1950s, the realm had acquired a legacy of political fragmentation that could neither be eliminated nor made to operate satisfactorily. The African politico-geographical map is thus a permanent liability that resulted from the three months of ignorant, greedy acquisitiveness during a period when Europe's search for minerals and markets had become insatiable."" Internally fine, with only a few scattered brownspots and a bit of foxing to a few quires.
The scarce first edition of Agassiz' important work on the fossil mollusks, which helped change the study of fossils and the understanding of natural history. The famous Swiss-American paleontologist and geologist, Jean Louis Rodolphe Agassiz (1807-1873), counts as one of the most important contributors to the understanding of the natural history of the earth and the creatures on it. ""By 1873, despite Darwin, Agassiz' name was synonymous with the study of natural history."" (D.S.B. I:74).Agassiz was born in Fribourg in Switzerland in 1807. He originally studied medicine but went on to also study philosophy and biology at the universities of Zürich, Heidelberg and Munich. In Erlangen he received the doctorate of both philosophy (1829) and medicine (1830). After that, he moved to Paris, where he got personally acquainted with Humboldt and Cuvier, who put him on the track of geology and zoology, the two disciplines that later came to be so closely connected to his name. Initially, the study of ichthyology was that brought him worldwide fame. In 1846 Agassiz travelled to America in order to give a lecture at the Lowell Institute in Boston and in order to study the natural history and geology of North America. Agassiz ended up staying in America, where he was became professor at the University of Harvard. ""Jean Louis Rodolphe Agassiz, a Swiss naturalist, was appointed in 1848 professor of zoology at Harvard University where he founded the museum of comparative Zoology and became one of the greatest teachers of biology and natural sciences of the nineteenth century."" (Printing and the Mind of Man 309 (main reference: Agassiz' ""Études sur les Glaciers, 1840).Agassiz was a hugely influential but later also controversial scientist. His discoveries in many branches of natural history, from that of mollusks and fish to that of glaciers were of groundbreaking character and they greatly influenced the biologists, zoologists and geologists of his time"" however, he did not himself subscribe to the ideas that his discoveries prompted and he was later viewed quite critically as a supporter of radical racial theories, causing his work to be termed ""scientific racism"". ""Ironically his many important discoveries provided much material for men such as Darwin and Lyell, while his conservative philosophical assumptions led him to resist dogmatically the great changes in the interpretation of nature that they were bringing about."" (PMM 309). The present work constitutes an excellent example of Agassiz' amazing desire to record data and present it accurately and precisely described, which led him to become one of the most important naturalists of classical biology at a time when it faced the transition to evolutionary biology. ""Agassiz (1807-1873) was born in Switzerland, and rose to distinction by his scientific work in Europe, but he went to the United States when he was still only forty-two years of age, and spent the last twenty-seven years of his life as an energetic and successful leader of science in his adopted home. His fame is thus both European and American, and the geologists of New England, not less than those of Switzerland, may claim him as one of their most distinguished worthies."" Sur les blocs erratiques du Jura. Extrait d'une lettre de M. Agassic.(Séance du Lundi 2 Octobre 1837).(Paris, Bachelier), 1837. 4to. Without wrappers. In ""Comptes rendus hebdomadaires des séances de l’Académie des sciences"", Vol. 5, No 14. Pp. (491-) 514. (Entire issue offered). Agassiz's paper: pp. 506-508.
First printing in France of Agassiz' founding paper - starting the the study of ancient glaciation - in glaciology in which he outlines his thesis that there was an earlier geological period with widespread ice-age conditions extending from the North Pole to the Mediterranean and Caspian Seas. he concluded that the Alpine ice, now restricted to the higher valleys, once extended into the central plain, crossed it, and even mounted to the southern summits of the Jura chain. Agassiz here adopts the term ""ice age"" coined in 1836 by Karl Schimper as 'Eiszeit'. Agassiz submitted the offered paper to the French Academy after he in his opening address as President of the Swiss Society of Natural History in 1837 (its Séance July 1837) in his famous ""Discourse at Neuchatel"" gave an exposition of the evidence of glaciation. The paper offered is his own, but briefer, exposition of the famous address to the Swiss Society.Parkinson ""Breakthroughs"" 1837 G.
