The Senate of the United States In Theory and Practice [2 vol.]Cambridge (MA), Houghton Mifflin Co. / Riverside Press, 1938. First edition of Georges Haynes' classic. Two octavo volumes, 220 x 150 mm each. Both volumes share the same pagination, the first having 567 pp. and second starting p. 568 to end at p. 1118. Hardcover, original editor's red cloth, with author's name in gold and title within a black lozenge on spine. Small paper of the "Livraria Agir Editôra", a Rio de Janeiro bookstore, tipped in at the beginning of the first volume. Each vol. has a black-and-white picture as frontispiece. Both volumes show several black-and-white illustrations. Some yellowing and foxing throughout with most pages being toned. All legible, sturdy binding, no bad smell, not ex-library. PP. 340 to 363 (first volume) have slightly folded corners with no damage to the text. "The 1938 publication of George Haynes’ two-volume The Senate of the United States: Its History and Practice instantly made Haynes the nation’s leading academic authority on that institution. Reviewers routinely ranked Haynes’ work with Charles Warren’s monumental three-volume The Supreme Court in United States History, published 15 years earlier. While others had produced major studies examining individual areas of Senate activity, and while Lindsay Rogers had created an extended essay on the institution in defense of unlimited debate, Haynes was the first to attempt a comprehensive history." (Excerpt from the summary on the U.S. Senate's website)
A good copy of a very tough finding. Haynes' book has become so rare even its 1960 reprint by Russell and Russell sells above $250, the first edition being often off-market and only to be consulted at political science or academic libraries.

The JewsLondon, Constable & company, 1922. First edition, second impression. In-8 hardcover, 13.5 x 21.5 cm, (xix) 308 pp. Bound in full crimson cloth, book title and author's name on the spine. Ex-library, trace of a removed label on the bottom of the spine, library stamp on the title page and right after. Preface and Contents at the beginning of the book. First published by Hilaire Belloc in 1922, "The Jews" is a controversial work of political and social analysis that addresses the complex and often antagonistic relationship between Jewish communities and their "host" European nations. Belloc argues that this friction is an inherent "Jewish problem," stemming from the Jewish people's status as a distinct, unassimilable nation within other societies. However, Belloc is keen to show tactfulness throughout the book and attacks "anti-Semites" as "extravagant" and "ill-balanced."

The American CommonwealthLondon and New York, MacMillan, 1888. Three volumes bound in full vellum leather. First edition. Three delicately bound 155 x 220 mm (6" x 8.5") volumes of (xxxii) 592, 683 and 699 pp. Full caramel vellum leather, intricately ornated spines with 5 nerves, gilded frames and boxes containing lush greenery-inspired patterns and fleurons, all gilded, double titlepiece with the book title, author's name and volume Roman number on dark red and anthracite backgrounds, gilded floral frieze on the tails. Covers with double gilded frames and tiny corner flowers. All fore-edges colored in a mostly blue polychromia with marbled red veins. Gilded roulette work on the edges of the covers and pastedowns, colored endpapers. Unidentified ex-libris on the first pastedown bearing the motto "Ab Multis Ad Unum." With an unfolding map of "The Growth of the United States" at the beginning of the first volume. Table of contents at the beginning and index at the end of each volume. First volume: The National Government. Preface. Second volume: The State Government and the Party System. Third volume: Public Opinion, Illustrations and Reflections, Social Institutions. This book is not an encyclopaedia of the institutions of the American Republic, even though it may look like it is. Actually, James Bryce talks about the real workings of the institutions: parties, bosses, the spoil system and the public opinion. It shows an America already different from what the mere Constitution says. He compares the British monarchy with the American federal republic, the democratic versus lord elites and the centralization vs local power dynamics. By doing so, James Bryce predates the sociology of Robert Mitchels and Max Weber while maintaining the magnitude and depth of a true treatise. An analytical tour de force, worthy of a serious Americana collection.
Light rubbing on some of the edges, the hinge of the 1st volume front cover is a bit frail, robust binding, interior is clean and in very good condition. A splendid set in its original intricate binding.

Artaud and the Gnostic Drama (Cathar Edition)United Kingdom, Scarlet Imprint, 2020. Limited to 51 copies of 278 x 192 mm, 261 pp. Half-bound in black goatskin, with yellow silk boards, black marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, finished with a silk ribbon and presented in a lined slip case, this copy being #50. "In Artaud and the Gnostic Drama, Jane Goodall offers a reappraisal of the importance of Antonin Artaud (18961948), mythologised as an icon of failure and madness, and examines the intricate parallels between his heretical dramaturgy and the heresies of ancient Gnosticism. The book situates Artaud, as the most extravagant of heretics, in company with the Gnostics whose speculations served to define heresy in the beginnings of the Christian tradition. Artaud subscribed to the Gnostic idea that the sensible world was created by a demiurge who was “imperfect, possibly evil and depraved.” His cosmology is inherently dramatic, setting creature against creator, force against form, matter against spirit, pious knowledge against heretical gnosis. Jane Goodall argues that major post-structuralist critics such as Derrida, Deleuze, and Foucault, who have enlisted Artaud in their own anti-orthodoxies, have refused to pay attention to the terms of his own heresy. In this refusal, they display an anxiety towards the gnostic drama and its heresies, which mount an assault that may be more powerful than their own upon the founding tenets of western thought." (Publisher's abstract) This work was first published by the Clarendon Press, Oxford in 1994. The text has been lightly revised for this second edition and is illustrated.
Unread and kept spotless. A fine copy.

Trilingual book with text in English, Portuguese and French. Forewords by Sandra Gonczarowska Mussi and Andrey Rosenthal Schlee. "Through his photographs, Jankiel Gonczarowska offers us fragments of a reality organized and reflected in his art from a striking personal vision about which he confirms, in his own words, that to be a good photographer you have to dedicate yourself to the profession, get in touch with people before photographing them and travel the world... My goal in creating this book was to make everyone discover this human journey marked by optimism and the history of a better Brazil, at a time when the difference between classes was striking, but each class had its beauty." (Preface) The author had the opportunity to rub shoulders to Niemeyer, President Juscelino Kubitschek and visit several places in Brasília then closed to the public, such as the Alvorada Palace. The photos suddenly change from black and white to color during the 1960s. A remarkable album, rare above the Equator.

A heartbreaking book, this True Story tells of a very bad in start fraught with desperation and doing everything to get out of one's condition. The author claims writing the book was difficult but she felt compelled to do so. Since then, while the book sold in the hundreds of thousands of copies, Adeline Yen Mah only appeared a very few times in public and rarely signed her work. This is a beautiful signed copy of her most important book, 1st edition.

Absolute V for Vendetta [signed with a drawing]USA, DC Comics/Vertigo, 2023. Tall and heavy hardcover, in-folio book. 32 x 21 cm, 384 pp. Signed by David Lloyd on title page, with a sketch of V on blue pencil alongside signature. With dust jacket, a black silk signet and a slipcase nicely housing the book. "Alan Moore and David Lloyd's powerful epic about loss of freedom and individuality gets the Absolute treatment! Taking place in a totalitarian England following a devastating war that changed the face of the planet, V FOR VENDETTA was the inspiration for the hit 2005 movie starring Natalie Portman and Hugo Weaving. This amazing graphic novel spotlights a mysterious man in a white porcelain mask and his young protégé as they fight political oppressors through terrorism and seemingly absurd acts. It's a gripping tale of the blurred lines between ideological good and evil and details a world where political and personal freedoms are non-existent."
A few bumps on the slipcase corners, otherwise a fine, crisp copy. A treat for any fan!

Travels in South America during the years 1819-20-21 containing an account of the present state of Brazil, Buenos Ayres and Chile.London, John Murray on Albemarle Street, 1825. First edition. Two volumes, 230 x 148 mm, (xii) 373 + (viii) 380 pp. Recently rebound in half morocco leather with 5 raised bands, author's name, title, volume number and year stamped in gold, marbled papers on covers and as endpapers. Headbands. Volume I features a picture of two masked women as "The Usual Walking Costume of Lima", a short preface, 12 chapters, 5 colored plates and an unfolding map of South America. Volume II features four color plates, including a frontispiece as well, chapters 13-19, no less than 26 appendixes and a very long folding map. "Caldcleugh came to Brazil as private secretary to the British Ambassador, Edward Thornton. From October, 1819, until 1821 he lived in Rio, and from there travelled to Argentina and Chile. His return journey again took him through Brazil, and this time he visited Minas Geraes which he describes on pp. 178-288 of the second volume. Caldcleugh's work has great documentary value. An excellent and impartial observer, he describes Rio de Janeiro with great accuracy, and studies the social, agricultural, financial, and political situations in Brazil. The part referring to the mines in Minas Geraes is of great interest. The first volume contains two very beautiful views of Rio de Janeiro." (Borba de Moraes, I:144) "An example of the very important travel literature of the period" (Griffin 3455). Abbey Travel 699, Sabin 9877. This work also includes appendices on matters such as meteorology, the slave trade, and shipping.
A very good and elegant copy. Some pages show some browning and occasional small defects on the margins with no loss to the pictures, content or the recently rebacked sturdy binding.

SIGNED in French by William Close and his wife Tina on the half-title page. Their dedication says: "Tu ma vue [sic], puis tu a acheté ce livre !!! à un type magnifique, avec l'espérance qu'on se verra encore. Bill Close et sa petite femme Tina Close" (translation: "You saw me, then you bought this book!!! To an awesome guy, I hope we will meet again. Bill Close and his cute wife Tina"). Inscription from 1944 written on the title page. Contents list at the beginning. Introduction, Preface and eight chapters, the eighth being the most famous for some idea which would get out of the Overton window. "William Taliaferro Close (June 7, 1924 – January 15, 2009) was an American surgeon who played a major role in stemming a 1976 outbreak of the Ebola virus in Zaire, the first major outbreak of the viral hemorrhagic fever in Central Africa, and preventing its further spread. He was also the father of Oscar-nominated actress Glenn Close and husband of Bettine Moore Close." (Wikipedia) Dr. Close's efforts proved instrumental in breaking the chain of transmission of the Ebola virus during a pandemic, saving thousands of lives, and investigated the progress of the AIDS pandemic soon after. Close wrote four books, which included chronicles of his experiences as a doctor in Zaire and Wyoming.
Some foxing throughout, otherwise all legible with no marking of any kind past the title page. A trace of William Close's adventurous, innovative and actually philanthropic life.

Purple marbled dishes with tons of yellow and bluish waves. Headband. Title page, dedication to the "merchants of Great Britain", Advertisement and table of contents at the beginning of the book. Twelve chapters followed by two appendices (and not just one as indicated in the table) with "Medical advice for Europeans who emigrate to Brazil" and indications on the coins, change and commodity prices. "As the recent political changes in Europe have naturally attracted the general attention towards the New World, no apology, it is presumed, can be deemed necessary for presenting to the public the following succinct account of one of the most interesting colonies in that quarter of the globe. The jealous and illiberal policy which at all times characterized the [Portuguese] government of Brazil in its intercourse with foreigners rendered it difficult to obtain accurate information respecting the productions, reade and commerce of this colony. The author therefore trusts that the information contained herein cannot fail to prove acceptable to the general reader and highly interesting to anyone engaged in commercial speculations." (Advertisement) ********************************* Londres, B. Clarke for Henry Colburn, 1809. (Avertissement, traduit)

It was originally published in 1970 and now, after so many years, the abridged text of this edition still preserves a pioneering stamp that could only be achieved through sensitivity and a steadfast prospecting of sources. In the field of plastic arts, what would be the meaning of a cultural construction of Brazil? Would it imply highlighting certain subjects? The fundamental contribution of the modernists was precisely the fact that it posed the problem of national culture."

Accompagné d'un second relié avec le premier, "A new relation of Rome as to the Government of the city, the Noble Families thereof, the Revenue and Expences of the Pope, the Courts of Justice, the Offices, the Congregations of Cardinals, and other Particulars very Curious. Taken out of one of the Choicest Cabinets of Rom, and English'd by Gio[vanni] Torriano, an Italian and Professor of the Italian Tongue", également édité par T. Mabb la même année, décoré de bandeaux. ************************************************ London, T. Mabb, 1664. Mabb the same year, decorated with headpieces. According to commentators Willems and Goldsmid, the pseudonym Angelo Corraro actually conceals Charles de Ferrare du Tot, a councilor to the king in the Parliament of Normandy in Rouen. The French version of the work was printed under a false address in Amsterdam by Daniel and Lodewijk Elzevier, from the original edition, typeset the same year in Rouen by Laurent Maurry under the pseudonym Almarigo Lorens. America Rising: Power and Political Economy in the First NationNew Brunswick (NJ), Transaction Publishers, 2009. First edition. Octavo, 235 x 160 mm, (xiii) 265 pp. Hardcover with dust jacket. "The United States became a great power in the last quarter of the nineteenth century and a superpower during World War II without quite knowing it. Few Americans fully appreciate the fact today. How many people know that in recent years we have had 250,000 troops in 700 bases around the world? Consider our recent history of military operations in the Caribbean, East Asia, the Far East, Middle East, Southeast Asia, Africa, and the Balkans. In America Rising, David Felix attempts to explain how and why America became a superpower by examining the political and economic factors that have driven its ascendance and their relationship throughout history. Felix begins with the dawn of America, showing how America amassed wealth and political power from the start through wars, assertions of economic might, and the creation of a cultural and philosophical base. The nation began with a political order, derived from our British origins, which enabled our pragmatic culture to take advantage of the vast wealth of a near-virgin continent. Political and economic freedom were paired, authority yielding to both freedoms. Our farmers and businessmen were dreamers, manufacturing realities out of those dreams. Felix's account then makes a point of neoclassical economics as an anvil on which to hammer out a sharper sense of the content of our existence. This book, which demonstrates the author's zest for historical analysis and great story-telling ability, points to the central fact of a rising America--the intensely energizing interaction between polity and economy. The United States is the greatest power in world history, but the rise of another great power, China, is beginning to be increasingly apparent. One trusts that, drawing upon its deep resources, America will remember its history and traditions and continue as a superpower." (Front and back flap)

United Colors of Judaica. Multiple Jewish Identities: A New PerspectiveTel-Aviv, Beit Hatfutsot (Museum of Jewish People), 2015. First and only edition. This is a catalogue of an exposition of paintings and artworks by Eliahou Eric Bokobza, with explanatory texts in English. In-4, 308 x 250 mm, 141 (3) pp. Bradel-style hardcover with colorful boards. Title written in Hebrew on spine. Printed on couché paper. Foreword by Orit Shaham-Gover, text "Kol Israel Haverim (All Jews are Friends): Multiple Jewish Identities in the Work of Eric Bokobza" by Smadar Sheffi. "Bokobza grapples with the weighty concept of kol Yisrael haverim and the contrasting elements of what he calls his “mixed identity”—his Tunisian-French-Israeli heritage, Oriental and Occidental cultures, his experience with religion and mysticism as a secular Jew— in “United Colors.” The exhibit is modeled after traditional museum exhibitions of Judaica, said Bokobza, which typically divide Jewish ritual objects into Jewish holiday and life cycle sections... “In each painting, I’m showing what my secular experience as a Jew in Israel was like” he said." (The Times of Israel, "The artist whose life began with Elijah", Zahava Presser, 30 July 2015)
Light soiling and bumps on the front cover, otherwise very good. No foxing and no markings.
