First editions, rare, of these works by the Intendant des Ponts et Chaussées very active while leading this department and instrumental in the realization of numerous bridges, canals and roads. The present works give a detailed overview of the various works in waiting with regards to the infrastructure of France in the early days of the Revolution: deals in detail with the canals in Bourgogne, Dôle, Picardie, the harbours of Dunkerque, Tréport, Dieppe, Le Havre, Rouen, Honfleur, Cherbourg, La Rochelle and many others. Deals furthermore with the department itself and its staff and possible reforms that should be implemented. The "Supplément" is the answer by the author to objections raised by a deputy from the North of France with regards to the works to be undertaken in the harbour of Dunkerque, and the third work is the author's reply to criticism from Gautier de Biauzat. The author is also critical of the "corvée" and the various abuses. Rare, espaecially with the supplementary texts.

Modern half morocco, marbled boards, spine gilt in compartments, gilt lettering to spine. Stourm, p. 43. First edition, very rare. Contrary to the other editions, published in the same year in Montpellier, this edition does contain the Récapitulation as is indicated in the 'Table générale.' Fundamental source for the administration of the Languedoc in the years preceding the Revolution. - Extremely rare and wealthy source, not mentioned in any of the current reference works. First and last leaves with some marginal browning, upper outer blank margin of title-page repaired, copy with ample margins.

Indispensible source for the study of the Icarian movement. The author made use of the archives of Beluze, today dispersed and even partly lost. The bibliography is the best known and most elaborate. - Wonderful copy: with a handwritten and signed dedication by Prudhommeaux on the half-title and with a coloured portrait of Cabet painted on the spine.

A Paris, Chez Cailleau, 1774. 16 pp. 8vo. Modern boards. Not in Conlon. First edition. Piece in 'vulgar' language, entirely in praise of Louis XVI and his first edict which ordered the 'remise du droit de joyeux avènement' and further stipulated that the payments of interests and reimbursments was to continue on the dates as previously set. The edict was registered on May 30, 1774.

Deals with the political situation of France in comparison with the other European nations: The political situation before the war; General thoughts on the present situation of France; Present situation of France considering its allies; Present situation of France considering its ennemies; Present situation of France considering the neutrals; Internal situation of France, followed by two chapters dealing with: 'Population et industrie de la France' and with 'Moeurs et Lois de la France.' According to Barbier the work was composed not only under supervision of Talleyrand but even partly written by him. Alexandre-Maurice Blanc de Lanautte, Comte d'Hauterive, was diplomat and economist, born in Aspres (Hautes-Alpes) on 14 April 1754. He went with Choiseul-Gouffier to Constantinopel, spent some years in New York, and returned to France in 1798 and started working for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From the 18th Brumaire to the fall of the Empire he was involved in all the major negociations of the period. - Small hole in half-title, occasional light spotting, small library stamp on half-title, a very attractive copy.

The author (of whom we could not trace any information) defends free enterprise and argues that 'Il faut laisser les patrons débattre librement le prix des salaires avec leurs ouvriers, et laisser l'ouvrier prélever, à son gré, sur son salaire, l'épargne qui sa prévoyance doit l'engager à faire ....' The workers may found small 'sociétés de secours mutuels'. As for the 'patrons': se sont eux qui, chefs d'usine, exposent leur fortune, leur personne, leur honneur même aux chances des affaires.

Contemporary marbled calf, spine gilt with raised bands, gilt letteriing, red edges, slightly worn, corners a bit bumped. Tchémerzine-Scheler, iv, p. 247; Camus 246. This is an unauthorized edition published by the Huguenot Rousset, a stipendiary of the Dutch governement. He added an enormous commentary of his own, highly critical of Mably. Rousset acknowledged the usefulness of the compilation, but constantly castigated its author for his biases against the Dutch and the Austrians. In his eyes Mably was plainly an agent of Versailles, inspired by the raison-d'état principles of Richelieu and Colbert. ' ..... Mably had assembled summaries of the major international treaties and agreements of the past century. This was published, with the explanatory notes, in two volumes in 1746, as Le Droit public de l'Europe, ..... It consists of résumés and citations, together with a considerable explanatory apparatus, of the chief international treaties and agreements among the major European powers, from Westphalia onwards. As such, the first edition of the Droit public is a virtual history of international relations from 1648 to 1740. (......) Mably's handbook was a model of clarity and rational exposition, and it met with instant success, not only in France, but abroad as well' (Johnson Kent Wright, A Classical Republican in Eighteenth-Century France. Asks for the revocation of the Arrest of January 6, 1755, which is contrary to the privileges allowed to the Comté de Bourgogne concerning the cultivation of tobacco. Contemporary manuscript in a clear legible hand.

No place, no date. Nice engraved head piece depicting a ship sailing out of a harbour. 16 pp. 8vo. Modern half morocco, marbled boards, gilt lettering on spine. Probably written around 1788-1789 as the author refers to the upcoming meeting of the Three Estates (the only one held in the 18th century) and reminds the reader of the 'grande sechesse de l'été de 1785.' Advocates agriculture and the means to improve its results, and points to the devastating effects of the 'Dime'.

The society 'Aide-toi, le Ciel t'aidera' was formed to aid opposition candidates for election to the Chamber of Deputies in the period 1827-1834. It was directed by a central committee in Paris and operated through a network of local committees and agents throughout the country. After the Revolution of 1830, the original directors of the society (among whom Barrot, Guizot and de Rémusat) withdrew, and leadership passed to young republicans, including Godefroy Cavaignac, Etienne Garnier-Pagès, and Louis Blanc. Under their direction the society published pamphlets, distributed letters of political intelligence and advice to members.

The 'pièces justificatives' give full texts of valuable documents: 'la première sur-tout est importante, parce qu'elle est infiniment rare, et que c'est le plus ancien procès-verbal d'États-Généraux que nous connoissions. Les autres, moins précieuses, sont peut-être plus rare encore: on ne les trouve dans aucun Dépôt public.' Significant for the discussions preceding the Revolution.

The present volumes are based on that translation to which have been added unpublished notes by Say and selective notes from earlier editions, the whole supervised by A. Complete set of the best edition with subject indexes, of the proceedings of the very first Assemblée Provinciale, as planned by Turgot and created by Necker. The distinction between the three orders was practically neglected and the voting was by call. This Assemblée was, together with the one of Haute-Guienne, the only one to survive until the revolution. During the years of its existence, the Assemblée made important decisions: the corvée was abolished and in this respect Berri became the example for all other provinces; improvement of waterways, extensively dealt with in the proceedings, was promoted because of the high costs of transport by land; the new doctrine of Turgot of 'liberté du travail' was adopted. Important document as the Berry was a sort of experiment for the future provincial assemblies. In these minutes one finds essais on agriculture, industry, various taxes in use, the Ponts et Chaussees, the future construction of the canal and its navigation. - Rare in this complete state. The first two volumes with the half-title: 'Collection des procès-verbaux de l'Assemblée provinciale du Berri'.

(Paris), De l'Imprimerie de Knapen, Pont S. Michel, 1766. With engraved head-piece. 15, (1) pp. 4to. Modern boards. Not in Conlon. Vincent Thomas is the owner of the Hotel du Parc in Lyon, "le plus connu et le plus fréquanté par les étrangers de marque", and claims his right to excercise his profession in Lyon, something the organized trade in that city refuses him. The court rules in favour of Vincent Thomas while analysing the legal development with regards to this trade. The printed names at the end are: Monsieur Terray, Rapporteur, Me Desmoulins, Avocat, Nolleau, Procureur. Around the head-piece various remarks concerning this trial have been written in a small handwriting.

Very rare original edition of the two primordial texts without which the financial and economic administration of France at the eve of the Revolution is difficult to understand. The rulings created a Conseil Royal des Finances & de Commerce replacing the two separate councils operating at that time: the Conseil du Commerce and the Conseil des finances, which, according to the king, where not operating to his satisfaction.
