A Paris, Chez Etienne Ledoux, 1820. With portrait and facsimile. 6 volumes. Contemporary half calf, spines gilt in compartments, marbled boards, red and green labels with gilt lettering. Bourgeois & André 797. Important French autobiography and important historical account on the period of the Fronde. François Paul de Gondi, Cardinal de Retz, (born September 1613, Montmirail, France-died August 24, 1679, Paris), one of the leaders of the aristocratic rebellion known as the Fronde (1648-53), whose memoirs remain a classic of 17th-century French literature. While still a student, he sympathized with the opposition to Cardinal de Richelieu, chief minister of Louis XIII from 1624 to 1642, who sought to weaken the power of the nobility. In 1643 Gondi was ordained a priest and was appointed coadjutor (acting deputy and successor-designate) to his uncle, Jean-François de Gondi, who was the archbishop of Paris.Gondi received the opportunity to play a major political role with the outbreak of the Fronde, a rebellion against the government of Anne of Austria (who was regent for her son, Louis XIV) and her chief minister, the Italian-born Cardinal Mazarin. Throughout the Fronde, Gondi worked primarily to advance his own interests, shifting his allegiance between the rebels and the government. During an interlude in the civil war he was persuaded to support the government's arrest of the powerful Prince de Condé in January 1650. But, reversing his position and that of his followers, he helped obtain the release of Condé and the temporary exile of Mazarin (February 1651). In an attempt to win his support, Anne nominated Gondi to the cardinalate on September 22, 1651. His nomination was accepted by Pope Innocent X on February 19, 1652, and from that time Gondi styled himself Cardinal de Retz. But his political maneuvering cost him his popularity in Paris, while the government mistrusted him and waited for revenge. After the end of the Fronde, and with the government victorious, and unable to gain favour with King Louis XIV, Retz lived away from court, on his estates or in his French abbeys. Claiming a religious conversion, he lived his last years in penance. Retz's Mémoires, written during his retirement, is an account of his life to 1655 and contains a description of his role in the events of the Fronde, portraits of contemporaries, and maxims drawn from his experiences. The Florentine banking family of the Gondi had been introduced into France by Catherine de' Medici; Catherine offered Jérome (Girolamo) de Gondi in 1573 the château that he made the nucleus of the Château de Saint-Cloud; his hôtel in the Faubourg Saint-Germain of Paris became the Hôtel de Condé in the following generation. The Gondi acquired great estates in Brittany and became connected with the noblest houses of the kingdom. François Paul de Gondi had little influence under Richelieu, used his later influence against Mazarin which in turn helped lead to the outbreak of the Fronde.

Paris, Chez Rapilly, 1828-1829. With one folding table and 1 engraved plate. 6 volumes. vi, 458 pp.; vii, (1), 479, (1) pp.; vii, (1), 472 pp., viii, 490 pp.; viii, 393, (1) pp.; vii, (1), 451, (1) pp. 8vo. Contemporary half calf, gilt decorated spines with gilt lettering, marbled boards, spines with some spots but a good copy. Teilhac 377; Kress 2175; Goldsmiths 25468; Einaudi 5112. First edition. In this work Say draws together and refines the principles of his Traité. It is based on his celebrated course of lectures at the Conservatoire des Arts et Métiers and the work was received with great acclaim. Say ranks with Sismondi and Cournot in originality concerning his contributions to economic theory and Schumpeter has called this work 'the most important of the links in the chain that leads from Cantillon and Turgot to Walras.' His teachings raised protest of the protectionists and appeared to be in contrast with the policy of the government. The Table des Chapitres of volume 6 have been bound after those of volume 3.

Paris, Deterville, 1817. 2 volumes. 79, (1), 452; (4), 486 pp. 8vo. Contemporary tree calf, spines richly gilt in compartments, red labels with gilt lettering, very lightly worn. Kress 7041; Goldsmiths 21737; Teilhac 376; this edition not in Einaudi and not in Mattioli. Third edition. Jean-Baptiste Say is primarily remembered for Say's Law: 'that supply creates its own demand'. Say never resolved his differences with Ricardo as to whether value was based on labour or utility, but in an attempt to clarify his position in 1822, Say spoke of 'the quantity of useful things' as being crucial. In his correspondance with Sismondi and Malthus, he came finally to reconcile Say's Law with their theories of aggregate disequilibrium. Say was a policy-orientated economist rather than a model builder like Ricardo. In his introduction to the new restrictions added to his chapter on the law of the markets, Say remarked: 'Now, we are studying practical political economy here. To Malthus he wrote: 'It is better to stick to facts and their consequences than to syllogisms' (New Palgrave, iv, p. 249).

Carpenter, The Dissemination of the Wealth of Nations in French and in France, p. 175 and pages lvii-lviii; Kress B.4604; Goldsmiths 18412; Einaudi 5340. Apparently a rare edition. All editions usually having at the end of each volume an errata-leaf. Here, however, all the errors have been corrected and the errata leaf is not present. Our copy is identical with the one described by Einaudi. Compared with copies usually appearing on the market it is clear that this edition was entirely newly printed. It is the improved version of the first edition of this classic translation, which became the standard French text, with the valuable notes by Garnier. His notes and observations were frequently reprinted after they had been translated for the Glasgow edition of 1805. - Front blank in first volume loosening.

Fifth, best and most complete editon of this work which forced the author into exile while his property was confiscated.Jean Baptiste Claude Isouard, writing as Delisle de Sales, published in 1766 his De la Philosophie de la Nature which caused a scandal for professing atheism and nihilism. The work was condamned to be burned, the author imprisoned and the censor exiled. Delisle filed for appeal and was supported by the whole circle of the philosophes who saw in him the champion of the liberty of thought and expression. The trial became a "cause célébre" in Europe: instead of an attack on the philosophes in general, which was the hidden agenda of the magistrates and Jansenists, the reading public appeared sympathetic to the ideas of the philosophes and turned Delisle's book into one of the greatest bestsellers of the century and made him an international celebrity. The magistrates and Parlement became the source of ridicule and outcry: swallowing the bitter pill, Parlement suspended Delisle's banishment and granted amnesty in 1777. The first edition of only three volumes was published in 1766 and it took the authorities some time to discover that the book was "matérialiste" and "spinoziste".

De l'esprit.A La Haye, Chez Pierre Moetjens, (Provins, Michelin), 1759. With title-vignettes, titles printed in red and black. 3 volumes. (4), viii, x, 244 pp.; (4), xi, 209 pp.; (4), 166, iv, 34 pp. 12mo. Contemporary polished calf, spines gilt in compartments, gilt fillets on sides, gilt lettering to spine, a very good copy. Smith, E.10; Keim p. 714; Thomas, Checklist, p. 72; not in Tchemerzine-Scheler. Rare clandestine edition, made 'à la Hollandaise' by Michelins in Provins, of this epoch-making work which brought together the 'philosophes' in a common front against their ennemies (see: Belin, Commerce des livres prohibés, p. 102). Claude Adrien Helvétius (1715-1771) obtained the lucrative post of fermier-général in which he soon grew rich. He became known, however, for the philantropic and enlightened uses he made of his great wealth, particularly as a patron of the philosophers and men of letters. He resigned in 1751 from tax-farming, married and retired to his country estate, thenceforth devoting himself primarily to philosophical and literary persuits. The publication in 1758 of his principal work, De l'Esprit, proved to be one of the ideological causes célébres of the eighteenth century. Appearing at a moment of political reaction, De l'Esprit was noisily condemned by the authorities, both ecclesiastical and ministerial, for its dangerously heretical and subversive opinions. No book during the eighteenth century, except perhaps Rousseau's Emile, evoked such an outcry from the religious and civil authorities or such universal public interest. Condemned as atheistic, materialistic, sacrilegious, immoral and subversive, it enjoyed a remarkable succès de scandale. It lost its privilège within a fortnight of its publication. It was attacked in Church periodicals and in polemical pamphlets, in the literary salons and in popular songs, from bishops' pulpits and from the stage of the Théâtre français. When the work appeared it was censured by the Sorbonne, the pope and the Parlement of Paris and in 1759 it was burnt by the public executioner. Even Diderot found himself unable to subscribe to it. But in spite of Diderot's systematic refutation of the work and in spite of the fact that Helvétius never collaborated in the Encyclopédie the authorities held the sensationalistic philosophy expounded by the encyclopédistes responsible for Helvétius dangerous principles. The appearance of De l'Esprit was thus an important factor in the second suppression of the Encyclopédie. The thought of Helvétius sprang mainly from the predominant current of sensualism in the Enlightenment, which he fashioned with marked originality into what may be described as a thoroughgoing doctrine of 'environmental behaviorism'. - In this copy the 'Tables sommaires' are bound before the 'discourses.'

With 9 folding tables. (2), iv, (2), 578, (2, errata, blank) pp. 4to. Modern half morocco, marbled boards, spine gilt in compartments, gilt lettering. Stourm, p. 143. Identical to the edition of the same year, also done in Montpellier of 456 pp., but newly set. In the numbering the pages 111-120 have been omitted. According to the 'Table générale' these pages contain the Récapitulation générale des deniers royaux. However, the other issue printed in Montpellier, has continuous pagination and does not contain the Récapitulation either, nor does the 'Table générale' of that edition indicate that they should be present. Only a Paris edition, published also in 1789, printed by the Imprimerie des Etats de Languedoc does contain the Récapitulation. It seems that only the edition printed by the Estates of the Languedoc was allowed to have the recapitulation. - Rare and wealthy source, not mentioned in any of the current reference works.

Title and text printed within a printed border. 18 pp. 4to. Modern boards. Not in Conlon, not in Kress or Goldsmiths. First edition. Deals with the various arrets and other legal or internal regulations that should guide the brokers in their behaviour and dealings with both each other and the clients. Several complaints lodged against a number of brokers, and which apparently were too dificult or vague to persue and would therefore have required too much time to clearify, forced the responsable officers to re-iterate the contents of these various arrets and internal regulations and finally to broaden the authority to deal with complaints to more officers and in very serious cases to the entire body of the brokers. These last measures are laid down in 8 articles, followed by a "Requete" to the Parlement to ratify and thereby give legal authority to these measures. - With a dampstain in the lower inner margin not affecting printed surface.

Londres, 1783 (Paris, EDHIS, 1976). 54 pp. 8vo. Boards. Not in Conlon, INED, Kress, Goldsmiths or Einaudi. Very rare text, reprinted in an edition of 150 numbered copies and 30 not destined for the trade, and since long out-of-print. The author explains that the people, ignorant as they are, are still subject to oppression and exploitation. Slavery has not yet disappeared, but is present under different forms: priests have followed up druids with the same privileges, etc. What we need is a governor who is prepared to rule men emancipated by common sense and equal rights. Exciting text and astonishing enough, from the pen of a captain of the Royal Artillery Corps, later (during the Empire) director of the booktrade.

Paris, 1814. 15, (1) pp. Small 8vo. Disbound. The Imperial University was a teaching corporation rather than a university and had theoretically as its membership all those involved in educating males in France. The university came into being by decree of March 17, 1808 and Napoleon wanted the teachers to be laymen rather than clerics, and he desired an organization modeled on the army's. The university aimed at a monopoly of public education, another purpose was to obtain for the lycées the pupils they lacked. When private schools proliferated, their number was reduced by heavy financial burdens; the university reform of 1811, aimed at making the university monopoly a reality, strictly regulated nonuniversity establishments, and limited ecclestiastical schools to one per department. The present text deals with a tax levied and collected by the Imperial University.
