ZWENGER Constantinus - Konstantin - Constantin (Fulda 1814 - 1884) :

" Gissae (Giessen), typis Lichtenbergeri, 1841, in-8°, 25 x 20.5 cm, 18+1 pp, sewn, no wrapper, marbled strip of paper on spine. Some browning but a fine/good copy. An inaugural lesson about Indian rubber, caoutchouc. (Catechin und Brenzcatechin). But the third and last thesis is; ""In primis graviditatis mensibus signa incerta, adeoque in posteribus dubia sunt.-"" On the verso of the title page, an Arabic proverb (in Latin), stating that ""whoever experiments, increases science, but who believes, increases error."" Konstantin Zwenger studied under Liebig in Marburg, he became professor in Kassel in 1844. This dissertation marks one of the important first steps in pharmaceutical chemistry in Germany.."

Haarlem, Ruygrok, 1924, formaat in-8°, 220 pp. Blauw-linnen uitgeversband met zwart en goudopdruk op het voorplat en de rug. Titelblad in rood en zwart gedrukt volgens (een bijn onleesbaar) cubistisch typografisch ontwerp. Band met lichte gebruikssporen, potloodgekrabbel op pp. 2 verder een goed exemplaar.

ZYLIUS Otho S.J. - [ ] Othon van Zyll ( Utrecht 1588 - Mechelen 1656 ) :

"15. Antverpiae ( Antwerpen ) , Ex Officina Plantiniana Balthasaris Moreti, 1632 , in-4°, 198 x 148 mm , (24) nn pp + 365 pp + (35)nn pp, with engraved title vignette. (complete) . Bound in contemporary mottled calf, raised gilt spine with 4 raised bands, red spickeld edges . Library stamp on first fly leaf and on the verso of the title page. Some worming at lower end of spine but a very nice copy with a crisp stainless interior. De Backer-Sommervogel, Vol. VIII , col.1549, item n°2. BCNI 8553. This book is dedicated by the author to the archduchess and Spanish infante Isabella who was herself a staunch promoter of the cult of the Virgin Mary. This devotion had strongly picked up in the Southern Netherlands as one of the a counter reformation answers to protestantism. The cult at Scherpenheuvel (Montaigu in French ; Aspricollis by Justus Lipsius) which had started around 1600 was also heavily supported by Isabella. The author describes in all 225 miracles, mostly pertaining to the healing of near mortally sick or wounded Roman Catholic believers in the diocese of 's Hertogenbosch ( or Den Bosch). The territory of 's Hertogenbosch was raised to a diocese in 1561 explicitly to check the spread of Protestantism. In 1629 the town was taken by the Protestants and the bishop (Michael Ophovius) had to abandon his see. Only in 1853 a bishop was re-instated."
