In September 2008, the seventh edition of the International Colloquium of Greek Palaeography (Madrid-Salamanca, 15-20 September 2008) celebrated the 300th anniversary of the Palaeographia graeca, the pioneer work of the Benedictine Bernard de Montfaucon that established the fundamentals of the discipline. Papers by renowned specialists in the field contributed to the methodology of study and to our knowledge of Greek manuscripts, and opened new perspectives for the study of the Greek manuscripts preserved mostly in European libraries, taking into account new methodological approaches, the possibilities of online resources, and the results of ongoing research projects. The Proceedings published here include contributions by specialists from over ten different countries, dealing with palaeographical issues such as ancient capital and lower-case lettering, writing and books in the Macedonian, Comnenian and Palaeologan periods, and Greek scribes and ateliers in the Renaissance (especially in manuscripts from the Iberian Peninsula). Many contributors also take a codicological approach and consider the material aspects of the codex, as well as other new research techniques. Finally, some papers deal with the book as object and how this relates to its content, as well as with the history of texts. The International Colloquia of Greek Palaeography are organized by the International Committee of Greek Palaeography, presided by Prof. Dieter Harlfinger. Fra Mauro's mappamundi, drawn around 1450 in the monastery of San Michele on Murano in the lagoon of Venice, is among the most relevant compendia of knowledge of the Earth and the Cosmos of the fifteenth century. By examining literary, visual, textual and archival evidences, some long considered lost, this book places the map within the larger context of Venetian culture in the fifteenth century. It provides a detailed analysis of both its main sources (auctores veteres such as Pliny, Solinus, Ptolemy, and novi, like Albert the Great, Thomas Aquinas, Marco Polo and Niccolo de? Conti) as well as of the composite networks of contemporary knowledge (scholasticism, humanism, monastic culture, as well as more technical skills such as marine cartography and mercantile practices), investigating the way they combine in the epistemological unity of the imago mundi. More a work on intellectual history than cartography, the book constructs a complex set of frameworks within which to situate Fra Mauro?s monumental effort. These range from the cultural history of the reception of the world map from the fifteenth to the nineteenth centuries to the analysis of the material conditions under which map-makers such as Fra Mauro worked; from the history of ideas, especially of natural philosophy to the links between world representations and travel literature. It also addresses the Venetian reception of Ptolemy?s Geography, the interactions between Venetian art, theology and cosmography and the complexities of the Venetian vernacular. The books develops a multi-tiered approach, in which different elements of the rich cultural context in which this world map was created, interact with each other, each casting a new light on the encyclopaedic work being analyzed.

This two-volume catalogue covers the entire collection of post-antique Italian sculpture in the Detroit Institute of Arts, ranging from early medieval to the early twentieth century. The collection of post-antique Italian sculpture in the Detroit Institute of Arts is considered among the three finest and most comprehensive outside Europe; however, this large and distinguished collection, whose formation began a century ago, has never been published in its entirety as a museum catalogue. This book presents five texts that recount the history of Britain from the time of its legendary founding by Brutus in 1200 BC to the fall of Richard II in 1399 AD. All the texts are anonymous: the earliest was composed some time during the reign of Edward I (before 1307), the last early in the fifteenth century. The first text is the Harley Epitome, a prose account from Brutus to Henry III (1272); the second is the Metrical History, a versification of the Harley Epitome in end-rhymed hexameters; the third is a marginal prose commentary on the Metrical History; the fourth and fifth texts are a continuation of the Metrical History in elegiac couplets, from Edward I to Richard II (1272-1399), and a prose commentary on the continuation. Only a portion of the Metrical History has been printed before. While based on the work of Geoffrey of Monmouth and other English historians, these texts exhibit an interest in Scottish and northern English affairs that makes it certain they were composed in northern England, in the political context of the English-Scottish hostilities of the thirteenth to fifteenth centuries. The Latin of the prose is fairly simple, and that of the poetry is unadorned; strong arguments are put forth in the introduction to the volume that the texts could have formed part of a programme for elementary history teaching in fourteenth-century York. The introduction discusses the authorship, place of composition, and purpose of the works, as well as the manuscript tradition, the versification and the language of the texts. A select bibliography, explanatory and textual notes, and an index of sources complete the volume.

The subject of the present publication is the working practices of the Ghent-Bruges illuminators, active in Flanders in the decades around 1500. Its focus is on manuscripts featuring freestanding, isolated motifs painted in the margins of text pages. The author traces how this decorative system was created by the Master of the David Scenes in the Grimani Breviary, a prolific inventor of appealing borders; how it was applied by his closest collaborators, and how it was imitated and adapted by other illuminators. Among these were Simon Bening, the Carmelite sister Cornelia van Wulfschkercke, and a number of anonymous masters, including several whose oeuvres are identified here for the first time. The author elucidates the sources for the isolated motifs and demonstrates how the codicological structure of the manuscripts provides insight into the use and the dispersion of various models for border decorations. The book discusses the famous strewn-flower borders and other types of fully decorated borders as well. The author analyses the isolated motifs in relationship to the page lay-out and the decorative programme of Ghent-Bruges standardised books of hours. The stylistic examination of both the miniatures and the borders of the manuscripts under discussion completes the integrated approach of this study. The art of painting restoration is almost as old as the art of painting itself. Accidents and time inevitably alter the appearance of a painting, and these changes begin as soon as it leaves the artist's easel. Purposeful alterations due to changes in taste have also contributed to transformations that paintings often underwent. Clearly the type of restoration procedures considered ethically acceptable have changed over the centuries. From the Renaissance until the end of the nineteenth century, European paintings were considered as two-dimensional illusions of a three-dimensional space, and any disruption to this illusion was considered as damage requiring repair. There was no acknowledgement of painting supports as an integral part of a picture; only the paint layer and the subject represented were appreciated. As a result, panels were often thinned and cradled in order to flatten the painted surface so that the image depicted could be viewed with less distraction. Supports were even considered replaceable. Total transfer of a painted surface onto a new surface was an acceptable procedure in the eighteenth century - even until the mid-twentieth century. Invisible retouching was used with the intent of returning the illusion of the painted surface to its 'original state'; the history of the work was not important. Until recent times, it was even acceptable to alter the format of a work of art to fit a frame or a space on the wall. Traditionally, if a painting was accidentally damaged or if 'adjustment' were required, a painter was entrusted with this task. In the past, the professions of painter and painting restorer overlapped, and both were trained as apprentices. Gradually the professional painting restorer appeared in Europe, and by the mid-eighteenth century, the profession was established. Earlier examples of professional restorers, especially in Italy, have been recorded while in other European countries, such as Britain, the career of the professional painting restorer began much later. During the later part of the eighteenth century in France, the painting restorers of the French Royal Collection became celebrated throughout Europe for their achievements. The political situation had an important influence on the development of the profession in France. The reigns of Francois I (1515-47), Louis XIV (1643-1715), Louis XVI (1774-93), and then the coup d'etat by Napoleon Bonaparte and the First Napoleonic Empire (1804-14) led to an increasing centralisation of the French Empire. The arts were meant to reflect the power of the state; thus Louis XIV and his political advisor and Surintendent from 1661 to 1685, Jean-Baptiste Colbert (1619-83), became the patrons of the French Academie de Peinture et Sculpture founded in 1648. A revision of the Academy's statutes in 1665 required students to submit annually drawings that focused on the heroic actions of the king. Paintings conferred status on their owner - in this instance the king and the French nation. It then became a necessity to have the paintings on display looking their best, and the skill of the French painting restorers was even used as a justification for Napoleon's policy of confiscation of works of art from all over Europe. The relationship between the French government's administration, firstly under the Ancien Regime, then under the new Republic, and the painting restorers they employed and supervised is related in this book. The manner in which changes occurred involves colourful personalities whose stories are often amusing and sometimes poignant, but above all they help us to understand the present-day situation. For during the turbulent years of the French Revolution new patterns emerged, which to a large extent remained in place in France for over two centuries. New book.

Medieval Holy Women in the Christian Tradition offers the first wide-ranging study of the remarkable women who contributed to the efflorescence of female piety and visionary experience in Europe between 1100 and 1500. This volume offers essays by prominent scholars in the field which extend the boundaries of our previous knowledge and understanding of medieval holy women. While some essays provide new perspectives on the familiar names of the unofficial canon of mulieres sanctae, many others bring into the spotlight women less familiar now, but influential in their own time and richly deserving of scholarly attention. The five general essays establish a context for understanding the issues affecting female religious witness in the later Middle Ages. The geographical arrangement of the volume allows the reader to develop an awareness of the particular cultural and religious forces in seven different regions and to recognize how these influenced the writing and reception of the holy women of that area. Seventeen major figures have essays devoted exclusively to each of them; in addition, the survey chapters on each region introduce the reader to many more. The extensive bibliographies which follow each chapter encourage further reading and study. Alastair Minnis was Director of the Centre for Medieval Studies and Head of the Department of English at the University of York, and is currently Douglas Tracy Smith Professor of English at Yale University.
