BAC, Ferdinand

France S.P. C1905 Première édition / aquarelle originale de Bac. Une grande image magnifiquement exécutée représentant une fête en plein élan. Une jeune femme, en haut, tient une bannière sur laquelle on peut lire Ici, nous dansons. Plusieurs couples dansent à proximité les uns des autres. La fête semble bien arrosée : en bas à gauche, un romantique déçu tient dans sa main une rose dont personne ne veut, et en bas à droite, un violoniste ivre s'est endormi. Une belle scène de débauche alcoolisée, qui semble se dérouler à la fin du XVIIIe siècle. L'uvre est magnifiquement dessinée, avec des couleurs vives, et signée en noir dans le coin inférieur droit. Elle est joliment encadrée sous un passe-partout bleu, avec une bordure dorée. L'ensemble est présenté dans un cadre brun assez moderne. Nous avons examiné l'uvre hors de son cadre et avons constaté qu'au dos était inscrit « Aquarelle... » (le reste du mot a été en grande partie effacé). Il semble s'agir de l'écriture de Bac lui-même. L'aquarelle mesure 42 cm x 29 cm. Le passe-partout mesure 46 cm x 33 cm. Le cadre mesure 65 cm x 47,5 cm. L'uvre est en excellent état. Ferdinand-Sigismond Bach, connu sous le nom de Ferdinand Bac (1859-1952), était d'origine allemande, né à Stuttgart, petit-fils illégitime de Jérôme Bonaparte. En plus d'être caricaturiste et artiste, contribuant à des journaux tels que « La Caricature » et « La Vie Parisienne », il était également un auteur prolifique, écrivant et illustrant des ouvrages tels que « Le Voyage romantique ».

First edition / original water colour by Bac. A large, and beautifully executed image of a party in full flow. A young lady to the top, is holding a banner stating in French"Here, we dance." There are several couples dancing in close proximity. The revelling seems quite drink fuelled, to the bottom left is an upset romantic, with his unwanted rose in his hand, and to the bottom right, a drunk violinist is asleep. A beautiful scene of drunken debauchery, set, from the appearance, in the late eighteenth century. The work is beautifully and brightly drawn, and signed in black in blank to the bottom right edge. It is attractively framed under a blue passe partout, with gilt foil border. The whole held in a fairly modern brown frame. We have examined this out of the frame, and to the rear is written "Aquarelle....." (the remaining words have been mostly rubbed away). This does appear to be in Bac's own hand. The water colour itself is 42cm x 29cm. The passe partout area is 46cm x 33cm. The frame is 65cm x 47.5cm. In excellent condition. Ferdinand-Sigismond Bach, known as Ferdinand Bac (1859-1952) was originally German, born in Stuttgart, as the illegitimate grandson of Jérôme Bonaparte. In addition to being a caricaturist and artist, contributing to journals such as "La Caricature" and "La Vie Parisienne", he was also a prolific author, writing and illustrating works such as "Le Voyage romantique." .

En plus de ce colophon, il y a une esquisse originale pleine page au crayon et au crayon de Bac, sur le papier frontal, signée et datée de 1935. Le portrait est du jeune héros du Voyage romantique, qui était basé sur la jeunesse de ses parents. Il y a aussi une chaleureuse inscription de cadeau à Madame Fontana, qu'il appelle son "vieil ami de Menton". Une petite tache sur les couvertures en papier et des craquelures sur le papier du dos. Il était bien connu pour ses caricatures historiques. BAC a conçu et réalisé Les Colombières, une maison et un jardin à Menton (sur la Côte d'Azur). Il a été achevé en 1927. La famille Fontana était des membres éminents de la communauté de Menton, avec Louis François Fontana agissant en tant que maire local pendant plusieurs années.

First edition, one of 200 "non destines au commerce" each numbered and signed by Bac. In addition to this colophon, has an original full page pencil and crayon sketch by Bac, to the front end paper, signed and dated 1935. The portrait is of the young hero of the Romantic Voyage, which was based upon his parents youth. There is also a warm gift inscription to Madame Fontana, who he refers to as his "old friend from Menton." A little staining to the paper covers and cracking to the paper of the spine. Inside mainly clean and tidy, but with some old tape marks where a business card (Madame Fontana's) was stuck to the half title. II, 100, [ii] pp + plates. 325 by 250mm (12Ÿ by 9Ÿ inches). Ferdinand Sigismond Bach known as Bac, draftsman, lithographer born in Stuttgart on August 1st, 1859 and died in Menton in 1952. He was well known for his historical caricatures. BAC designed and created Les Colombières, a house and garden in Menton (on the French Riviera). It was completed in 1927. The Fontana family were prominent members of the Menton community, with Louis Francois Fontana acting as local mayor for several years.

Quelques ébréchures sur les bords et un léger assombrissement. L'intérieur du dos a été renforcé avec du ruban adhésif d'archivage. L'intérieur de l'album comporte quelques pages non coupées. Un peu de noircissement et des rousseurs sporadiques, mais une collection attrayante d'images. Titre plus 19 feuilles d'illustrations pleine page au recto seulement. Une préface de Maurice Donnay précède les illustrations. 36.5cm x 28cm.

First edition, 4th thousand of this album by Bac. Attractive cover, although this has become detached from the book block. Some chipping to the edges and a little darkening. The inside of the spine has been strengthened with archival tape. Internally, the album has some pages uncut. A little darkening and sporadic foxing, but an attractive collection of images. Title plus 19 leaves of full page illustrations to the recto only. Preface by Maurice Donnay precedes the illustrations. 36.5cm x 28cm. .

Rotterdam T.J. Wijnhoven Hendriksen 1841 Première édition. Reliure refaite au XXe siècle avec des plats recouverts de papier peint. Celle-ci est quelque peu frottée mais en bon état. Dos en toile rouge d'origine avec un petit lien. Deux des planches ont été reliées à l'intérieur des plats (une à l'avant et une à l'arrière). Pas de pages de garde. La reliure est quelque peu lâche et abîmée mais tient encore. Seize planches coloriées à la main. Les pages et les planches sont en bon état, avec seulement quelques petites marques/rousseurs. Un ouvrage rare. Une histoire humoristique sur un chien et un chat qui, en l'absence de leur maître, s'habillent en seigneur et maîtresse dans l'espoir d'un repas savoureux. Ils sont démasqués et battus par les domestiques. Le chat attrape un rat, le chien attrape des voleurs, et ils sont ainsi à nouveau appréciés. Les illustrations humoristiques et le texte en rimes ne sont pas tout à fait synchronisés. Les lithographies sont colorées à la main dans des couleurs vives. Ne figure pas dans Brinkman ; dans Nieuwsblad voor den Boekhandel daté de 1841. 29 pages. 10 cm x 16,5 cm. Conforme à WorldCat / OCLC : 64154813. First edition. Rebound in twentieth century with wallpaper covered boards. This is somewhat rubbed but sound. Original red cloth spine with a small tie to the spine. Two of the plates have be bound in to the inside of the boards, (One to front one to rear). No end papers. The binding is somewhat loose and shaken but still holding. Sixteen hand coloured plates. The pages and plates are in sound condition, with a little marking / foxing only. A rare item. A humorous story about a dog and a cat who, in their master's absence, dress up as lord and mistress in the hope of a tasty meal. They are exposed and beaten by the servants. The cat catches a rat, the dog catches thieves, and thus they are valued again. The humorous illustrations and the rhyming text are not entirely synchronized. The lithographs are hand-coloured in bright colours. Although undated, there is no indication of later edition. Not in Brinkman; in Nieuwsblad voor den Boekhandel dated as 1841. 29 pages. 10cm x 16.5cm. Conforms to WorldCat / OCLC: 64154813. This suggests only one library holding at the KNB. .

Exemplaire correct, 160 x 110 mm (6Œ x 4Œ pouces). La carte en couleurs en frontispice (qui représente l'ensemble de l'Angleterre et du Pays de Galles) présente une déchirure fermée sur un bord, mais est sinon en très bon état. Le reste du livre est en bon état, légèrement noirci.

Second edition. Red stiff card covers with gilt titles. Slight marking and with a light crease to the front board, but in good condition. A decent copy, 160 by 110mm (6Πby 4Πinches). The frontis colour map (which is of the whole of England and Wales) has a closed tear to one edge, otherwise very good. The rest of the book is in good, slightly darkened condition.

Orléans H. Herluison 1885 Première édition. Cette monographie reste le récit définitif de la campagne menée par le duc de Guise dans la région d'Orléans en octobre et novembre 1587. Cette campagne fut une opération militaire catholique décisive lors de la huitième guerre de religion. Elle visait les forces mercenaires protestantes et aboutit à une victoire décisive lors de la bataille d'Auneau. Le duc se révéla être un excellent tacticien, remportant la victoire contre une force bien plus importante. Couverture originale en papier vert pâle. Celle-ci est en bon état mais légèrement foncée. Il y a un autocollant de bibliothèque sur la couverture, mais aucune autre marque de bibliothèque. L'intérieur est propre et soigné, avec juste une légère coloration foncée des pages. Grande carte dépliante de la campagne au dos. First edition. This monograph remains the definitive account of the Duke of Guise's campaign in the Orléanais region during October and November 1587. This campaign was a key Catholic military operation in the eighth War of Religion. It targeted Protestant mercenary forces, culminating in a decisive victory at the Battle of Auneau. The Duke showed himself to be an excellent tactician, winning against a much larger force. Original pale green paper covers. These are sound but slightly darkened. There is a library shelf sticker to the cover, but no other library marks. Internally clean and tidy throughout, with just a touch of darkening to the pages. Large folding map of the campaign to the rear. A scarce item, there are only three library holdings according to Worldcat (BnF, Geneva and Harvard) and no copies available online at the time of cataloguing. 28 pages. 25cm x 16cm. Manque l'étiquette de titre au dos. Illustré de 15 planches gravées (la plupart dépliantes). (Complet). Celles-ci représentent des microscopes ou des observations faites à l'aide de ceux-ci. A l'intérieur, l'ouvrage est propre et bien rangé, sans dommages majeurs. Les planches sont propres et de bonnes impressions. Il y a une petite tache au coin de certaines pages. Il s'agit de la seule édition française de l'ouvrage de Baker "Microscope made easy" publié en 1742. Cette édition française a été augmentée par rapport à l'édition anglaise, avec une section sur les polypes et une gravure supplémentaire (de microscopes). Elle a été décrite par "Microbiology Today" comme le premier manuel de laboratoire de microscopie. Baker a joué un rôle central dans la popularisation des microscopes au dix-huitième siècle. First Thus (French translation). Contemporary full leather, with gilt decorated spine. Spine a little rubbed and stained, but still attractive. Lacks title label to the spine. Illustrated with 15 engraved plates (mostly folding). (Complete). These are of microscopes or observations made through them. Internally mainly clean and tidy throughout, with no major damage. The plates are clean and good impressions. There is a little staining to the corner of some of the pages. This was the only French edition of Baker's "Microscope made easy" published in 1742. This French edition was expanded from the English edition, with a section on Polyps and an addition engraving (of microscopes). This was described by "Microbiology Today" as the first Microscopy laboratory manual. Baker was central in popularising microscopes in the eighteenth century. Translation by Father Esprit Pezenas. Internally quite clean, with light water stain to lower corner of last few pages. Giovanni Baldelli (19141986) was an Italian anarchist theorist, best known for his 1971 work Social Anarchism he also wrote poetry, plays and philosophical works. 47 pages. 215 x 160 mm (8œ x 6Œ inches).

N/A N/A 1875 Un bel exemplaire de cette estampe ancienne. Il s'agit d'une reproduction du Diable, assis en Enfer, tiré de L'Enfer de Dante. Gravée à l'origine vers 1475. Il s'agit d'une reproduction du dix-neuvième siècle (basée sur la chaîne de papier vergé - il n'y a pas de détails sur l'imprimeur), imprimée sur du papier vergé brun. Elle est collée sur une carte de support récente avec des charnières en forme de timbre. Il y a une tache d'eau sur l'un des bords (voir les photographies), visible au verso, mais qui n'est pas particulièrement visible au recto. Une gravure fabuleuse, et un bel exemplaire de grande qualité. 23cm x 28.5cm.

A lovely copy of this antique engraving. This is a reproduction of the Devil, sat in Hell, from Dante's Inferno. Originally engraved around 1475. This is a Nineteenth century reproduction (based on the chain laid paper - there are no printer's details). printed on brown laid paper. It is tipped onto a recent backing card with stamp hinges. There is a water stain to one edge (see photographs) although visible from the rear, this is not particularly noticeable from the front view. A fabulous engraving, and a nice, high quality copy. 23cm x 28.5cm. .

Luzern Josef Stocker 1944 Première édition. Un bel exemplaire de cette première édition numérotée et limitée. N° 384/1500. Reliure de type « pouch binding », en carton rigide couleur crème, cousue avec un cordon au niveau du dos. La couverture est légèrement foncée et présente quelques légères traces d'usure. Le dos est un peu fendu, mais cela n'affecte pas la solidité de l'ouvrage, le cordon assurant la cohésion de la reliure. L'intérieur est propre et soigné, mais les bords des pages sont légèrement noircis. Chaque mois comporte une page de texte à gauche et une illustration en pleine page à droite. 44 pages. 39 cm x 28 cm. Richard Seewald (1889-1976). Peintre et illustrateur né à Munich. À partir de 1931, il s'installa au Tessin, région italophone de Suisse. C'est là qu'il se convertit au catholicisme. Il retourna en Allemagne en 1948.

First edition. An attractive copy of this numbered limited first edition. #384/1500. Bound in the pouch binding style, Stiff cream card binding, sewn with cord to the spine. The cover is a little darkened, and has some slight rubbing to the covers. A little splitting to the spine, but this is a limited issue as the cord holds the binding together. Internally clean and tidy, but with a little darkening to the page edges. Each month has a page of script to the left, and a full page illustration to the right leaf. 44 pages. 39cm x 28cm. Richard Seewald (1889-1976). A Munich born painter and illustrator. From 1931 he settled in Ticino, an Italian speaking part of Switzerland. He converted to Roman Catholicism whilst living here. He returned to Germany in 1948. .

Inspiré par les publications d'Épinal du XIXe siècle, ce joli livre a été assemblé à l'aide de blocs colorés au pochoir. Cela permet d'obtenir des couleurs vibrantes qui donnent l'impression d'avoir été colorées à la main. Les planches de la couverture rigide sont légèrement assombries, mais en bonne santé, et le dos est en tissu rouge. Il y a une légère zone de saignement de la couleur en haut à droite des planches. First edition. Hardback limited edition of this magnificent children's work. One of only 150 copies on Van Gelder Hollande paper. Sadly, our copy no longer has the suite of black and white illustrations. Inspired by the Épinal chapbook style publications of the nineteenth century, this lovely book was assembled using stencil coloured blocks. This leads to a vibrancy of colour that gives the appearance of hand colouring. The hardback boards are slightly darkened, but substantially sound, with a sound red cloth spine. There is a slight area of bleeding to the colour in the top right of the boards. Internally clean and bright throughout. 45 pages. 390 x 290 mm (15Œ x 11œ inches).

Paris Alphonse Lemerre / Calmann Levy 1870 Deux ouvrages de Banville reliés ensemble. Le premier est un exemplaire de la première édition d'Eudore Cléaze, *Conte du Jour de l'An*. Publié par Alphonse Lemerre en 1870. Les couvertures souples d'origine sont reliées. Vignette de l'éditeur sur la couverture. La couverture souple est reprise en page de titre. 24 pages. 16 cm x 8,5 cm. En excellent état. Vient ensuite une réédition de *Gringoire, comédie*. Celle-ci n'est pas datée, mais porte la mention « Nouvelle Édition » sur la couverture en papier vert. Publiée par Calmann-Lévy, avec le nom du propriétaire inscrit en haut de la couverture et sur les pages de demi-titre. 68 pages. 18 cm x 12 cm. Les deux livres sont en excellent état. Le premier est en très bon état, le second présente une légère usure des bords de la couverture en papier ainsi que de légères rousseurs, mais est par ailleurs en très bon état. L'ouvrage possède un dos en toile bordeaux avec des plats marbrés assortis et des titres dorés sur le dos. Il est en très bon état, ne présentant que de très légères traces d'usure. Le livre lui-même mesure 19 cm x 13 cm. Théodore de Banville (1823-1891) est aujourd'hui surtout connu comme poète, mais il était également passionné de théâtre et a joué un rôle influent dans le renouveau de l'intérêt français pour la tradition de la commedia dell'arte et le personnage de Pierrot. *Gringoire* est sa pièce la plus connue. *Eudore Cléaz* est une nouvelle qui fait partie d'un recueil de Banville intitulé *Esquisses parisiennes*.

Two works by Banville bound together. The first is a First edition copy of Eudore Cléaze. Conte du Jour de L'An. Published by Alphonse Lemerre in 1870. Original soft covers are bound in. Publisher's vignette to the cover. The soft cover is repeated as the title page. 24 pages. 16cm x 8.5cm. In excellent condition. Next is a reprint edition of Gringoire comédie. This is not dated, but states Nouvelle Edition to the green paper covers. Published by Calmann Levy, with owner's name to the top of the covers and the half title pages. 68 pages. 18cm x 12cm. Both books are in excellent condition. The first is in fine condition, the second has a touch of edgewear to the paper cover with slight foxing, otherwise in fine condition. Book overall has a burgundy cloth spine with matching marbled boards and gilt titles to the spine. In very good condition with a touch of handling only. Book itself is 19cm x 13cm. Théodore de Banville (1823-1891) is today remembered more as a poet, but he was also passionate about the theatre, and influential in reviving French interest in the commedia dell'arte tradition, and the figure of Pierrot. Gringoire was his best known dramatic work. Eudore Cléaz is a short story that belongs to a collection of Banville's he called Esquisses parisiennes (Parisian Sketches). .

BARBEDOR, Madeleine.

Haut de Cagnes Zimmerman & Cagnes 1973 Première édition. Un magnifique recueil de 50 illustrations de Barbedor. Tiré à 200 exemplaires. La série était apparemment numérotée et signée. Cet exemplaire n'est ni numéroté ni signé au colophon, mais comporte une dédicace chaleureuse de l'artiste à un ami sur la page de titre. Nous supposons qu'il s'agit d'un exemplaire hors série provenant du stock personnel de l'artiste. De plus, nous joignons une feuille comportant deux illustrations imprimées à la sanguine par Barbedor sur du papier d'art gris épais. Curieusement, bien que le titre indique « cinquante dessins », nous en avons dénombré 52 dans le portfolio, mais deux d'entre eux sont peut-être des vignettes. L'un des dessins est imprimé en rouge et noir, tandis que toutes les autres illustrations sont uniquement en noir. La collection est en excellent état. Elle est conservée dans un portfolio en carton bleu avec des titres blancs. Celui-ci est quelque peu frotté et présente quelques déchirures au niveau des plis. Madeleine Barbedor (1905 - 2001) était une dessinatrice et illustratrice française. Elle s'était installée dans la banlieue médiévale de Nice, au Haut de Cagnes, où de nombreux artistes ont séjourné. Son art s'inspirait largement du symbolisme et du romantisme. Ses dessins dépeignaient la vie quotidienne au Haut de Cagnes à travers le prisme de scènes mythologiques. Elle est surtout connue pour ses illustrations des uvres d'Henri de Montherlant. Il s'agit d'un ouvrage rare : aucun autre exemplaire n'est en vente au moment du catalogage, et il n'existe aucun résultat de vente aux enchères pour cet ouvrage. First edition. A lovely suite of 50 illustrations by Barbedor. Limited to 200 copies. The series was apparently numbered and signed. This copy is not numbered, and not signed to the colophon, but there is a warm inscription by the artist to a friend on the title page. We assume that this is an out of series copy from the artist's own stock. In addition, we are including a sheet with two sanguine print illustrations by Barbedor on heavy grey art paper. Curiously, although the title is fifty designs, we counted 52 in the portfolio, but two are perhaps vignettes. One of the designs is printed in red and black, whilst every other illustration is in black only. The collection is in excellent condition. Held in a blue card portfolio with white titles. This is somewhat rubbed and with some splitting to the folds. Madeleine Barbedor (1905 - 2001) was a French designer and illustrator. She based herself in the medieval suburb of Nice, Haut de Cagnes, where many artists have spent time. Her art utilised symbolism and romanticism to a large extent. Her drawings portrayed daily life in Haut de Cagnes through the lens of mythological scenes. She is best know for her illustrations of Henry de Montherlant's work. BARLACH, Ernst

Ernst Heinrich Barlach (1870-1978) was a German expressionist sculptor, printmaker and writer. Although he was a supporter of the war in the years leading to World War I, his participation in the war made him change his position, and he is mostly known for his sculptures protesting against the war. He felt foul of the Nazi party and was labeled degenerate. He did produce a number of self-portraits - largely woodcuts.

The label to the back of this black and white image states " Original-Graphik von Ernst Barlach" The image is clearly of Barlach. But it appears to be a lithograph of an ink original, rather than an actual ink drawing. It is difficult to be certain, as the paper has been secured to the glass at the edges, and could not neatly be removed (So we have left it secured). Although the image has marked similarities with other drawn works of Barlach, we have been unable to locate another copy of this image. There is possibly an artist's initials to the lower right of the frame (see pics). Underneath the frame, to the rear of the image, is written "6 abels wie ist 883" It is on heavy art paper, and in very good clean condition. Held in a white glazed frame. The frame has a few tiny nicks to the edges, but overall an attractive and striking portrait. Image area 53cm wide by 35 cm high (13Ÿ by 20Ÿ inches). Frame area 67cm x 52.5cm.

Paris Hippocrate et ses Amis 1953 Bel exemplaire de cet ouvrage. Grand in-quarto en feuilles volantes (environ 39cm x 29cm) de (8) + 132 et (12) pages, sous couverture crème matelassée, titre imprimé en rouge, étui et coffret cartonnés de l'éditeur. Illustré de 26 lithographies en couleurs d'Yves Brayer. Premier tirage limité à 120 exemplaires numérotés, plus quelques "exemplaires d'artiste", le tout sur papier vergé d'Arches. (Papier Lana). Il s'agit de l'exemplaire n°48 imprimé pour Le Docteur J. J. Gournay. Il est accompagné d'un feuillet plié (imprimé dans le même format) pour le dîner de l'éditeur en mars 1953. Il s'agit d'une lithographie de Brayer représentant une scène pastorale (presque biblique), signée au crayon par l'artiste. Il comprend le menu du dîner. Le menu est un peu assombri sur la feuille extérieure, mais dans l'ensemble il est en bon état. La chemise du livre est en grande partie propre, mais présente quelques bosses et une légère fissure au niveau du dos. Les feuilles des livres eux-mêmes sont propres et bien rangées, avec de belles lithographies de Brayer. Maurice Barrès (1862-1923) était un écrivain français de premier plan et un homme politique nationaliste.Son livre de 1895 "Du sang, de la volupté et de la mort" (Du sang, de la volupté et de la mort) est un texte clé dans lequel il explore les thèmes du vitalisme, de la passion et de la vie intérieure en tant que moi souverain lié organiquement à l'ascendance et à la race. Yves Brayer (1907-1990) était un peintre, graveur, illustrateur et décorateur de théâtre français de premier plan, associé à la tradition figurative.

An attractive copy of this work. Large quarto in loose sheets (approximately 39cm x 29cm) of (8) + 132 and (12) pages, under a cream-coloured, padded cover, title printed in red, publisher's cardboard slipcase and box. Illustrated with 26 colour lithographs by Yves Brayer. First printing limited to 120 numbered copies, plus a few "artist's copies," all on Arches pure laid paper. (Papier Lana). This is copy #48 printed for Le Docteur J. J. Gournay. Also enclosed is a folded sheet (printed in the same size) for the publisher's dinner in March 1953. This features a lithograph by Brayer of pastoral (almost biblical) scene, signed in pencil by the artist. It includes the menu for the dinner. The menu is a little darkened to the outside sheet, but overall in good, clean condition. The folder of the book is mainly clean, but with a little bumping and with slight splitting to the spine. The sheets of the books themselves are clean and tidy throughout, with attractive lithographs by Brayer. Maurice Barrès (18621923) was a prominent French writer and nationalist politician.His 1895 book "Du sang, de la volupté et de la mort?" ("Of Blood, Pleasure, and Death") is a key text where he explores these themes of vitalism, passion, and the inner life as a sovereign self connected organically to ancestry and race. Yves Brayer (19071990) was a prominent French painter, engraver, illustrator, and theatre decorator, associated with the figurative tradition. .

BARRETT / ASHBURTON, Charles Alfred

London W. & J. Stratford 1793 Première édition. Un bel exemplaire de cette gravure, qui a été habilement colorée à la main. A l'origine pour l'Histoire de l'Angleterre d'Ashburton, elle est maintenant conservée sous passe partout. La plaque est en bon état, propre et légèrement assombrie. Le bord est légèrement rugueux à l'endroit où elle était reliée à l'origine dans le livre. La gravure mesure 23 cm x 39 cm. La monture mesure 33 cm x 45 cm. Catherine Parr était la sixième et dernière épouse du roi Henri VIII, connue pour son intelligence, ses sympathies protestantes et son influence à la cour. L'évêque Stephen Gardiner était un catholique conservateur de premier plan et une figure puissante de la cour d'Henri, souvent en désaccord avec la faction réformiste que Catherine Parr soutenait. Au cours des dernières années du règne d'Henri, les tensions religieuses étaient vives, les factions conservatrices et réformistes se disputant l'influence sur le roi et l'avenir de l'Église anglaise. First edition. A lovely copy of this engraving, which has been skillfully hand coloured. Originally for Ashburton's History of England, it is now held beneath passe partout. The plate is in good, clean fractionally darkened condition. Slightly rough edge where originally bound into the book. Engraving is 23cm x 39cm. Mount is 33cm x 45cm. Catherine Parr was the sixth and final wife of King Henry VIII, known for her intelligence, Protestant sympathies, and influence at court. Bishop Stephen Gardiner was a leading conservative Catholic and a powerful figure in Henry's court, often at odds with the reformist faction that Catherine Parr supported. During the later years of Henry's reign, religious tensions ran high, with conservative and reformist factions vying for influence over the king and the future of the English church. The scene in question dramatises an episode where Bishop Gardiner, intent on arresting Catherine Parr for her reformist views (which some considered heretical), approaches Henry VIII while he is conversing with Catherine in the garden. Gardiner's aim was to seize the queen, likely on charges of heresy, as part of a broader campaign against Protestant sympathizers at court. Henry VIII, however, rebukes Gardiner, protecting Catherine Parr from arrest and making it clear that he would not tolerate such actions against his wife..
