BOOK
Référence : 17043A Londres, 1775. With 1 folding map and 4 folding tables. viii, 293, (1) pp. 8vo. Contemporary marbled calf, spine gilt in compartments, red morocco label with gilt lettering, gilt triple fillets on sides, red edges. Kress 7170; Goldsmiths 11330; Einaudi 5517; INED 4798; Higgs 6403; Peignot, Livres Condamnés, i, p. 141. First edition. Severely prosecuted attack on the Fermiers-Généraux, forbidden already in 1776. 'Diatribe sanglante contre les fermiers généraux et les abus scandaleux de leurs agents. L'auteur met en scene un malheureux dont les 'suppôts de la ferme' ont ruiné la famille et fait périr le père de chagrin' (INED). According to a manuscript note in the Kress copy: '..... l'on croit que cette sanglante diatribe des fermiers généraux a été composée, imprimée et répandue sous les auspices du ministère actuel (celui de Turgot & Malesherbes).'This, in fact, is the first edition of a work which became better known under the title "L'Ami du Peuple François, ou Mémoire adressée à Mr. Turgot, ....." published at Limoges one year later (1776). Even the motto in both works is identical: "Ni Ferme ni regie: l'une et l'autre font la perte des Etats." The present work contains the same text as the "L'Ami du Peuple" (upto page 84, and then the pages 256-269) and contains in addition much detailed information about the taxes. It was probably deemed to complex or technical and was published again in 1776 as "L'Ami du Peuple François" this time omitting the detailed information about the taxes. The work suggests Turgot to abolish the tax system in use as it is injust and odious, of relatively little profit to the king but very profitable for the taxfarmers and hard-pressing on the population. The work describes in detail the various taxes in existence, their effects, the cruel practises of the taxfarmers, the uneven division of the taxes and the disastrous effects. It is told in the form of a story: the anonymous author recounts the story of his father and his family and how they were, little by little, driven to complete ruin. His father, responsible for the collecting of taxes in his village, is thrown in jail and his possessions confiscated by the taxfarmers because of his inability to raise the requested taxes from the other taxable inhabitants of his village.

BOOK
Référence : 15632A Paris, Chez Belin, Volland, Gueffier, Prault, Rondonneau & compagnie, L'An II de la République (1794). 3 volumes. 8vo. Contemporary marbled calf, spines gilt with red and green labels with gilt lettering, lightly rubbed and some small imperfections. Not in Kress; Goldsmiths 16029; Martin & Walter, Anonymes, 17454. Complete set. The Law of the Maximum, legislation that established a partially controlled economy during the year II. It was the second of three primary maximum degrees. It aimed at fixing the prices of wheat and flour (maximum of 4 May 1793), the maximum of 29 September 1794 fixed both prices and wages over a wide spectrum of primary commodities and production, the third, the maximum of 24 February 1794, replaced the local prices of the second maximum with a schedule of national prices. On 24 December 1794 the Thermidorians disestablished this system of price and wage controls. These were the basic laws of a complex of degrees and a torrent of administrative reporting that included not just fixed prices but administratively controlled distribution as well, all of it directed theoretically from Paris by the Commission of Subsistence and Provisions and backed by the authority of the Committee of Public Safety.Volume I: Alimens, boissons, épiceries, et drogueries. BOOK
Référence : 15516Lyon, J.M. Boursy, (1831). Folio poster on white paper (38,3 x 44,5 cm), folded and bound in a small 4to volume. Modern half morocco. Not in Charléty. Following a slump in production at the beginning of 1831 and following a petition by the weavers and others demanding a new tariff in October, the new prefect of the Rhone, Bouvier Dumoulard, ordered weavers and merchant representatives to negociate new piecework rates. A preliminary agreement was arrived at on October 31. When it became apparent that many merchants ignored it and that some even withheld commission for new work to indicate their displeasure at any attempt to fix the cost of labor, the weavers responded with a strike and when National Guard units composed largely of merchants and their clerks fired on demonstrators a general uprising began. It was suppressed by Marchal De Soult at the cost of 550 lives. During this revolt the first black flags appeared with the devise: Vivre en travaillant, ou mourir en combattant (see: Historical Dictionary of France from the 1815 Restoration to the Second Empire, vol. i, p. 654). - Some staining. A document of great importance and of great rarity.

Not in Kress; not in Goldsmiths; not in Einaudi; Conlon 88:2248 (stating that the original English work is unknown). Very scarce first edition. The 'Epitre Dédicatoire' reads 'De l'Éditeur Anglais à M. Richard Frewin, Ecuyer, un des Officiers des Douanes de Sa Majesté.' Furthermore the text states that this Mr. Frewin has produced the tables, that Mr. Frewin wants to remain in the background but that he must be seen as the principal author of the work. If there ever was an English original is unknown: no English version of this work exists. However, it may be that this is a French version of the item listed under Goldsmiths 12314: "The rates of merchandize, as settled by the Acts of 12 Car. II. Cap.4, II Geo I, cap 7 . With the duties and drawbacks ." published in 1782 and of which Richard Frewin was one of the compilers. This is a nicely printed list of import and export rates, a very detailed listing in alphabetical order by product and country or source of origin, with the rates given in both English and French currency. Includes rates on paper (writing paper, copper plate paper, printing paper, whited brown, brown paper, etc.) giving various sorts of paper (Impérial; Sur-Royal, Cartouche, Bleu Royal, Lumber-main, etc.) and the dimensions of paper. - With library-stamps on front cover and a few pages: Archives. All published, original edition. The most eloquent journal of the Revolution. Under attack by the very radical Hébertists for poor attendance at the Convention and for socializing with the wealthy, Desmoulins published the journal as his defense. Perhaps the Terror also offended him because after blasting his assailants, he printed subtle but telling indictments of the Terror and called for clemency. It has also been suggested by many historians that Desmoulins acted to support Danton and his associates who were at the same time attacking the Hébertists and trying to limit the Terror. Thompson, in his two volume study on Robespierre even states that the aim of the journal was not to moderate the gouvernment, but to overthrow it. Whatever the truth may be, the Committee of Public Safety decided to eliminate its political opponents, which included Desmoulins, He was executed on 13 April 1794.

BOOK
Référence : 20769Amsterdam (France), 1767. (4), 474 pp. Small 8vo. Contemporary marbled calf, spine gilt in compartments, green label with gilt lettering. Hartig 59; Trousson pp. 161-162; Gove p. 356; INED 3858; cf.: Negley 979. Rare second issue of the first edition (1766) of this utopian novel in which, in the vein of Rousseau, the newly discovered people of an (Australian) island are praised for their political and social institutions (thereby condamning the European counterparts). Utopian account of which it is suggested that it is a translation from the English. The work is evidently inspired by the Physiocratic ideas and draws also inspiration from Rousseau's Contrat Social. Contains also political, economical and moral ideas, points to the importance of agriculture and population, and pleads for the nationalization of the trade. The Encyclopedists appear as the 'Pansophistes' and are criticized (pp. 146 and ff.) The main story is that the hero has sailed with Sir Francis Drake to South America and, through his narrative, to have inspired William Penn to found an ideal city in North America. For an extensive description of this interesting work see: Van Wijngaarden, Les Odyssées philosophiques en France entre 1616 et 1789, pp. 216-225.
