Cologne (Amsterdam), P. du Marteau, 1677. 2 volumes in 1. (12), 13-360 pp.; 165, (2) pp. 12mo. Contemporary overlapping vellum. Bourgeois & André 2969; Sauvy, Livres saisis à Paris, p. 5; Le Bucher bibliographique, 525; not in Kress; not in Goldsmiths; not in Einaudi; INED 1073. Augmented edition. Upon its first publication in 1669, also anonymously and outside France, the identity of the author was discovered and he was put in the Bastille (for 15 days). The author may be considered as a precursor of Vauban and Castel de Saint Pierre for his revolutionary ideas of reforming the tax system, and for his ideas concerning the clergy, commerce and protestants, etc. 'In Colbert's time Paul Hay, marquis de Chatelet, and forerunner of Vauban, pointed out that extreme poverty conducted to death and disease and thus served to depeople rural regions; that tax reforms were necessary to improve economic conditions. Although he opposed the association of rural with urban workers, on the ground that the former would become insolent and acquire corrupt customs, he asserted, like Colbert, that man's happiness is the end of 'la politique.' He condemned the expulsion of the Huguenots as unchristian' (Spengler, French predecessors of Malthus, p. 12). Spengler also points to the fact that this work inspired some of Vauban's ideas on taxation. See also: Vignes, Origines de la dîme de Vauban. The Réflexions added under the pseudonym of Ormegregny are by Pierre Dumoulin. They deal with the two chapters concerning the clergy and the protestants.

Modern marbled boards, label with gilt lettering. Monglond, i, col. 271, giving Abbé Jean-Baptiste Helie as author; Martin & Walter, Anonymes, 14529; Conlon 89:8957. Rare first edition of this diatribe on the occasion of the suicide of the bishop of Grenoble, Jean-Marie-Anne Hay de Bonteville. Nice copy of this vehement satire in which Hay de Bonteville delivers a speech at the States General in hell, discusses with Judas, claims the right to replace Judas as the right-hand of Lucifer, etc. It is a vehement mockery of the career of Hay de Bonteville and the manner in which this officer of the Church exercised his duties: he spend most of his time in Paris or in his house in the countryside. He committed suicide in october 1788 probably for having played a dubious role in pre-revolutionary events in the Dauphiné. The work furthermore includes many allusions to recent events in France (dismissing of Necker, re-calling of Necker, difficulties in organizing the States General, ridicules various high-ranking officers, etc.) - Title-page with a dust stain in the upper outer margin, a nice copy with large margins.

De l'esprit.A La Haye, Chez Pierre Moetjens, (Provins, Michelin), 1759. With title-vignettes, titles printed in red and black. 3 volumes. (4), viii, x, 244 pp.; (4), xi, 209 pp.; (4), 166, iv, 34 pp. 12mo. Contemporary polished calf, spines gilt in compartments, gilt fillets on sides, gilt lettering to spine, a very good copy. Smith, E.10; Keim p. 714; Thomas, Checklist, p. 72; not in Tchemerzine-Scheler. Rare clandestine edition, made 'à la Hollandaise' by Michelins in Provins, of this epoch-making work which brought together the 'philosophes' in a common front against their ennemies (see: Belin, Commerce des livres prohibés, p. 102). Claude Adrien Helvétius (1715-1771) obtained the lucrative post of fermier-général in which he soon grew rich. He became known, however, for the philantropic and enlightened uses he made of his great wealth, particularly as a patron of the philosophers and men of letters. He resigned in 1751 from tax-farming, married and retired to his country estate, thenceforth devoting himself primarily to philosophical and literary persuits. The publication in 1758 of his principal work, De l'Esprit, proved to be one of the ideological causes célébres of the eighteenth century. Appearing at a moment of political reaction, De l'Esprit was noisily condemned by the authorities, both ecclesiastical and ministerial, for its dangerously heretical and subversive opinions. No book during the eighteenth century, except perhaps Rousseau's Emile, evoked such an outcry from the religious and civil authorities or such universal public interest. Condemned as atheistic, materialistic, sacrilegious, immoral and subversive, it enjoyed a remarkable succès de scandale. It lost its privilège within a fortnight of its publication. It was attacked in Church periodicals and in polemical pamphlets, in the literary salons and in popular songs, from bishops' pulpits and from the stage of the Théâtre français. When the work appeared it was censured by the Sorbonne, the pope and the Parlement of Paris and in 1759 it was burnt by the public executioner. Even Diderot found himself unable to subscribe to it. But in spite of Diderot's systematic refutation of the work and in spite of the fact that Helvétius never collaborated in the Encyclopédie the authorities held the sensationalistic philosophy expounded by the encyclopédistes responsible for Helvétius dangerous principles. The appearance of De l'Esprit was thus an important factor in the second suppression of the Encyclopédie. The thought of Helvétius sprang mainly from the predominant current of sensualism in the Enlightenment, which he fashioned with marked originality into what may be described as a thoroughgoing doctrine of 'environmental behaviorism'. - In this copy the 'Tables sommaires' are bound before the 'discourses.'

Second and augmented edition, done by Hendrik Jansen, librarian of Talleyrand and future 'censeur impérial'. The book is dedicated to Talleyrand and has been augmented with the Lettre sur une pierre antique. This last letter by Jacobi adressed to Hemsterhuis deals with Spinoza, volume one includes Herder's essay on love and egoism (v. 1, p. [91]-130).Frans Hemsterhuis (1721-1790), Dutch philosopher. His life and philosophy may be divided into two periods. In the first period the Lettres sur l'Homme et ses rapports was his principal work, preceded by two small, closely connected treatises, Lettres sur la Sculpture and Lettre sur les Désirs in which works Hemsterhuis argued that the essence of the aesthetic experience is longing to unite oneself with the art object. This concept became part of his theory of ethics which is set out in the Lettre sur les Désirs. The theory is further developed in Alexis ou l'Age d'Or, on which the Platonic dialogues of his second period are based. In this second period he wrote four Platonic dialogues the most important of which are Aristée ou de la Divinitée, and Alexis ou de l'âge d'or. In Alexis Hemsterhuis, perhaps influenced by contemporary German philosophy, presented for the first time his concept of the golden age and the harmonious development of the individual. He also introduced the notion of the value of poetical truth (truth discovered by the poet in moments of enthusiasm). With these ideas Hemsterhuis had moved far from his earlier rationalism, and his thought was received with admiration and approval by representatives of the Sturm und Drang and romatic movements in philosophy. In this period he was very popular with and influenced the two Schlegels and Novalis.Provenance: the English philosopher Henry Longueville Mansel, with his engraved ex-libris, with stamps of Mansfield College Library, Oxford, and stamp of the bookdealer Danielle Cousin (Rennes) in both volumes, a bit browned and spotted.

Contemporary marbled boards, handwritten paper label on spine, corners lightly bumped. Ziegenfuß, i, p. 514. Scarce first edition. Johann Friedrich Herbart (1776-1841), German philosopher, psychologist, and educational theorist. He entered the University of Jena in 1794. Although he studied under J.G. Fichte, Herbart was unable to accept Fichte's view of the ego and its psychology, and in reaction he laid the basis for his own metaphysical and psychological views. Herbart's ideas were in fact the bases of the chief German pedagogical school of the late nineteenth century and exerted considerable influence in the United States through pedagogues trained at Jena. The Herbartians (for example, Stoy and Rein) had their last center in the Jena pedagogical seminary until the postrevolutionary school reforms terminated their declining influence. - Old ownership entry on front pastedown: A.G. A Berlin, 1757. iv, xviii, 435, (1) pp. 12mo. Contemporary marbled calf, spine richly gilt with raised bands, gilt lettering, red edges. Higgs 1474; Kress 5617 (incomplete copy); Weulersse, i, xx; this edition not in Goldsmiths, Einaudi & INED. The best edition. Du 17 Septembre 1754', to which referrence is made in the Avertissement. The basic importance of agriculture in the life of the French nation was equally emphasized by C.J. Herbert, who held labor and land to be the primary resources of a nation, and agriculture its basic industry. Upon agriculture depended a nation's power and wealth, its ability to colonize, the fruitfulness of its commerce, and the capacity of its territory to support population. Having demonstrated the basic importance of agriculture to the political and economic strength of France, Herbert indicated that French agriculture was languishing, and its revivification was essential to the aggrandizement of the nation and to the felicity of its inhabitants; ..... Herbert advocated the improvement of grain markets and prices through inauguration of the right to export grain, modifications in the tax system, and the establishment of a research bureau to discover how agriculture could be improved, and why some provinces were more favorable to agriculture, manufacturing, and population growth than others. (Spengler, French predecessors of Malthus, pp. 67-72). Valuable work, cited with praise by Adam Smith.

(24), 408 pp.; (4), 454 pp. 8vo. Modern half red morocco, spines with gilt lettering, marbled boards. Kress B.3197; Goldsmiths 16541; Einaudi 2888 (4to edition); INED 2264bis (4to edition). First edition, both a 4to and a 8vo edition were published. 'The dynamic aspects of population growth were treated more fully by Herrenschwand, a Swiss-born sometime French official, than by any other French author. Throughout his work runs the view that although man's procreative power is without inherent limit, population 'can multiply only in proportion to its support', and does increase as man's cultural progress enables him to increase the available food supply. He seems to have believed, moreover, despite his great faith in man's capacity for intellectual and cultural progress, that unless appropriate economics policies were persued by statesman, population pressure and misery would be the lot of the lower classes, who comprised about three quarters of the population' (Spengler, French Predecessors of Malthus). Herrenschwand borrowed his conception of nature from Shaftesbury, was influenced by Adam Smith and Arthur Young, and apparently knew the works of Franklin, Steuart, Decker, Price, Davenant, and Temple, and was a critic of Necker's views and policies. Arthur Young praised Herrenschwand's works highly, and Blanqui mentions him as a connecting link between Quesnay and Smith. - Very fine and nice copy, with large margins.

Lettres de France et d'Italie (1847-1852). Traduit du Russe par Mme N(atalie) H(erzen). Édition des enfants de l'auteur.Genève, 1871. xvi, 311, (1) pp. 8vo. Modern half morocco, original covers preserved. Zaleski 79; not in Catalogue Russica. First French edition. Alexander Herzen (1812-70) was a prominent nineteenth-century Russian social thinker and is known as the 'father of Russian socialism.' Early in his intellectual development, Herzen was influenced by German idealist thinkers such as Schiller and Schelling. He believed in the autonomy and dignity of the individual and opposed forces, such as family and state, that oppressed the individual. Later, under the influence of French socialist thinkers such as Charles Fourier, Herzen's thought became more radical. Herzen projected his earlier concern for the oppressed individual onto society at large and he became a supporter of socialism. The socialism he envisioned was a loose federation of self-governing communes. Only in such a system could the ideal society be achieved- according to Herzen that society would be a free association of individuals which provided for the full flowering of each personality. Herzen initially placed his hopes for this future order in the European socialist movement. After the failure of the 1848 revolutions to achieve socialist principles, however, Herzen became disillusioned about European prospects and turned his attention to Russia. Herzen argued that socialist transformation would actually come first to Russia because communal institutions such as the peasant commune survived and bourgeois attitudes hadn't yet emerged. This sense of the advantages of Russian 'backwardness' was influential among the Populists in the 1870s. Herzen has been called a 'gentry revolutionary.' The illegitimate son of a wealthy landowner, Herzen viewed the gentry as a progressive class. The revolution he envisioned was for the people but not necessarily by them. Also, his socialism was a national destiny rather than a class one, and because he promoted the value of individualism in collectivist form--in other words, the full flowering of the individual could best be realized in a socialist order. Among Herzen's works are From the Other Shore (1848-50) and The Russian People and Socialism and his autobiography, My Past and Thoughts. He founded a periodical, the famous Kolokol, in whose pages the free word first appeared in the Russian language, unhampered by censor or police, exposing the government's secrets, criticizing bureaucratic abuses, approving the good intentions of the czar, the 'liberator', and trying to dictate to him a reform program.

Modern boards, original covers preserved. Anderson 302; Kilgour 436; Zaleski 197. First separate edition: Herzen's letters to Turgenev, which first appeared in My Past and Thoughts, published here with a new introduction. 'Herzen's renewed interest in Russia's past and future was closely linked to his bitter disappointment in the "old world". He was a discerning critic of bourgeois society, even if his strictures were not always fair. The modern reader is struck especially by certain far-sighted observations, that seem to anticipate criticism of a complex phenomenon we have come to refer to as "mass culture". Herzen's most interesting comments in this respect are to be found in a series of articles entitled Ends and Beginnings, in which he conducted a polemic with Ivan Turgenev, who had become the moral authority for liberal Westernizers in Russia' (Andrzej Walicki, A History of Russian Thought, Oxford, Clarendon Press, 1980, p. 170). Translations from and into German in the 18th century, p. 14 and no. 15. Third French edition of 'Die Wirtschaft eines philosophischen Bauern'. Hans Kaspar Hirzel (1725-1803), town physician of Zurich, describes the model farm of Jakob Gujer (1716-1785), known as 'Chlijogg', a farmer-philosopher who attained European fame through this account. Goethe came to see him twice and thought him one of the most wonderful creatures on earth. He was portrayed by Lavater in his famous work on physiognomy. The first German edition of this work was published in 1761 by Heidegger as part of Abhandlungen der Naturforschenden Gesellschaft in Zürich; he also published the first French edition, the first to be in book form, in 1762. 'This was the most succesful German socio-economic work of the 18th century. It shows the importance of French as an intermediary language. (.....) More importantly, through the French translation it came to the attention of Arthur Young who had it translated and published as an appendix to his Rural Economy (1770) which went through several editions. The translation made for Arthur Young was also published several times in the American colonies and in the early years of the new republic. The myth it fostered of the superior virtue of the agricultural life has been a powerful and persistent force in American life' (Carpenter). Includes the correspondence of the author with De Mirabeau.

Elementa Philosophica de Cive.Amsterodami, Apud Ludovicum Elzevirium (Amsterdam, Elzevier), 1647. Engraved title. [48, including the engraved title], 403, [5] pp. 12mo. Eighteenth-century full red morocco, spine gilt in compartments, gilt lettering, gilt triple fillet on sides, all edges gilt, a bit rubbed. MacDonald & Hargreaves, 27; Willems 1048, stating that this particular edition was printed by Blaeu. One of three Elzevier editions from 1647, this being the one with a different engraved title, issued without the portrait of Hobbes present in the other two editions, but with the prefatory letters by Gassendi and Mersenne which are absent in the other two editions. The first edition was published in 1642 and is almost impossible to find, these 1647 editions being the first ones obtainable for a wider audiance. De Cive is the book were all the foundations for his later "Leviathan" are to be found: the observation "bellum omnium in omnes" (war of all against all) and the equally famous "homo homini lupus est" (man is a wolf to other man). It consists of three parts, the first treating the state of nature (entitled "libertas"); the second treats the necessity of the creation of a stable state or government (entitled "imperium"), and the final section, entitled "Religio" contains theological reflections and arguments in support of the first two sections.De Cive is one of Hobbes major works, the first edition, and this edition, were published in Latin, the first English edition appeared in 1651.Hobbes had planned to write a comprehensive philosophy in three sections: De Corpore, De Homine, and De Cive, in this order, but he wrote the last section first because the political situation in England seemed to him urgently to require it. De Cive was printed in such a limited number of copies that Gassendi declared they excited rather than satisfied thirst. The fact that the book was condamned in 1683 by the University of Oxford, and included in a Decretum of 16 June 1654 published at Rome testifies to the fact that the first edition was hardly known at the time. A second edition was published 5 years later in which edition he had inserted a number of notes in answer to objections and which included a weighty 'Preface to the Reader', giving the first distinct public intimation of the relation in which the treatise stood to a general philosophical scheme, and explaining the occasion of its appearance out of due order (MacDonald & Hargreaves). - Margins a bit short but not affecting text, the last blanks (R11-R12) preserved, a nice copy in red morocco.

Premiere Partie [- Seconde Partie].A Londres, 1781. 2 volumes. (12), 316, pp.; (4), 385, (3) pp. 8vo. Contemporary marbled calf, spines gilt with raised bands, gilt triple fillet on sides, all edges gilt. Vercruysse 1781-A1. This is Holbach's most famous work (and in which he was very likely assisted by Diderot) and expounds a complete theorie of materialism.Holbach contributed some four hundred articles to the Encyclopédie of his lifelong friend and colleague Denis Diderot. Diderot, d'Alembert, Helvetius, Voltaire and others of the philosophes met frequently for dinner and philosophical discussion at the Baron's house, which became known as 'the café of Europe' (among foreign visitors were Wilkes, Hume and Sterne). In the Système Holbach rejected the Cartesian mind-body dualism and attempted to explain all phenomena, physical and mental, in terms of matter in motion. Holbach rejected religion because he saw it as a wholly harmful influence, and he tried to supply a desirable alternative. In fact he outlined a whole ethical and political philosophy, which he expanded in his later works.Holbach may not have been a great original thinker (his important ideas can already be found in predecessors such as Hobbes, Locke and La Mettrie), but by combining various elements in their thought and pressing it to the logical conclusion he reached the most extreme position in eighteenth-century free-thought. In fact, the present book caused a rift in the ranks of the philosophes, dividing them between deists and atheists, and even provoked Voltaire to reply in defense of religion. The pages 339-385 contain l'Abrégé du code de la nature and the Réquisitoire du 18 août 1770. - A very good copy.

Londres (Amsterdam, M.M. Contemporary calf, spine richly gilt with leather labels and gilt lettering, gilt triple line fillet on sides, lightly worn. Vercruysse 1773-A4; Naville 419; Thomas, Checklist, 78; Kress S.4739; Goldsmiths 10952; Einaudi 2911; Higgs 5873; R. Darnton, The Corpus of Clandestine Literature in France, 1769-1789, 662. First edition. Paul-Henri Dietrich Thiery d'Holbach (1723-1789), the formemost exponent of atheistic materialism and the most intransigent polemicist against religion in the Enlightenment. On settling in Paris, Holbach had associated with the younger philosophes who, with Diderot, d'Alembert and Rousseau, were grouping around the Encyclopédie, to which he also became a major contributor. His Salon soon became the main social center, and a sort of intellectual headquarters, for the Encyclopedist movement. Among those attending were Diderot, Grimm, Helvétius, d'Alembert, Rousseau, Boulanger, Condillac, Naigeon, Turgot, and Condorcet. The Baron also counted among his acquaintances many foreigners, notably Hume, Gibbon, Smith, Priestley, Walpole, Garrick, Sterne, Beccaria and Franklin. It is little surprizing that Holbach was also known as le premier maître d'hôtel de la philosophie. Almost everything he wrote -whether because it expounded atheism and materialism, attacked Christianity, or castigated absolute monarchy, the state church, and feudal privilege- was highly subversive under the Ancien régime and could have exposed him to the severest penalties. Consequently, his innumerable manuscripts were usually forwarded through secret channels to Holland for publication, after which the books were smuggled back into France.

Träume eines Menschenfreundes. Erster [-Zweyter] Theil.Carlsruhe, bei Christian Gottlieb Schmieder, 1784. With one folding table. Two volumes bound in one. (iii)-xvi, 288 pp.; (iv), 369, (1) pp. 8vo. 19th-century half cloth, spine gilt in compartments, gilt lettering, marbled boards, corners, sprinkled edges. Not in Kress; not in Goldsmiths; not in Einaudi; not in Menger; for other editions see Goldsmiths 11382 and Humpert 12691; Mattioli 1690; NUC locates only two copies (NNC, CU). Second edition of the author's principal work on physiocracy, and very rare. In 1755 Iselin published his Patriotische und Philosophische Träume eines Menschenfreundes. 'Afterwards, by good fortune, the Ephémérides du Citoyen came into his hands after reading which Quesnay became in his eyes 'what Newton is in the eyes of a mathematician.' The new standpoint comes to light, fully matured in the work which appeared in 1776: Träume eines Menschenfreundes. This book is by no means a second edition of the work published in 1755, as is generally supposed, and as might have been conjectured from the kindred title, but quite a new work' (Palgrave, vol. ii, p. 459) in which he embraces the authors who had adopted Quesnay's teaching, as the marquis de Mirabeau, Baudeau, Comte d'Albon and others. The present edition is a reprint of the 1776 edition, the first volume contains the representation of Quesnay's Tableau Economique.According to Iselin human institutions have corrupted the natural order and in this book he concludes with a new constitution aiming at the reconciliation of the republicanism of his Swiss homeland with the enlightened despotism of Quesnay. Iselin was the editor of the German economic journal Ephemeriden der Menschheit which soon gained a great reputation and counted among its contributors many of the most eminent German economists of the time.- The half-titles, carrying the serial-title "Sammlung der bestend deutschen prosaischen Schriftsteller und Dichter. Hundert und vierzigster (Ein und vierzigster) Theil", are absent, tear in page v-vi repaired, title-pages with contemporary ownership's entry in blank portion.

'Particulièrement instructif' (Stourm). 'Matériaux historiques et économiques servant à réfuter l'assertion du Directoire, selon laquelle nos ressources sont entières. Des causes de la dépopulation et des moyens d'y remédier.A Londres, et se trouve à Paris, Chez Dessain junior, 1767. (2), xii, 298 pp. 12mo. Contemporary marbled calf, spine gilt in compartments, label with gilt lettering, red edges, some light scratches, small repair to joint of rear cover, a fine copy. Kress 6453; Goldsmiths 10298; Einaudi 3048; INED 2349; Higgs 4197; Conlon 67:953; not in Mattioli. First (and only?) edition. The abbé Pierre Jaubert's opinions were more varied than those of Danguel and Plombaine, but similar in character. He accepted the opinion of Montesquieu, Forbonnais, and the agrarian writers that population tended to grow when men were assured the fruits of their labor and some comfort; and that failure to cultivate all available land, coupled with the great and inequitable tax burden was depressing agricultural production and retarding population growth. Therefore he advocated stimulation of the agricultural arts: protection of agriculturalists against their creditors; a redistribution of the tax burden; the use of idle urban workeers to perform the corvées; and restrictions upon the crop-destroying wild game which were raised and protected for the benefit of the nobility. He furthermore proposed that monasteries and nunneries be stripped of tax exemption and other privileges, he was critical, as were many writers, of the French hospital and penal system, he advocated an improved urban water supply, enlargement and frequent cleaning of the streets, daily filth removal, and the location of certain establishments (cemetries, tanneries, etc.) outside cities. Spengler considers his suggestions for the curtailment of celebacy and the counterbalancing of its effects, as most important. With his emphasis on agricultural arts he was in line with the Physiocrats (for a detailed analysis see: Spengler, French predecessors of Malthus, pp. 90-94). A very nice copy of a scarce and important work.

A Paris, Chez Mathias, 1844. xii, (5)-475 pp. 8vo. Modern half morocco, marbled boards, gilt lettering. Kress C.6356; Goldsmiths 33698; Einaudi 3076; not in Mattioli. The only edition of this interesting work on patents and copyright. Jobard, 1792-1861, had always been passionately interested in technology, social reform, and patents and copyright. Being himself an inventor and strenuous upholder of the maintenance of copyright, he published, besides many pamphlets on the subject, the above work. 'Si vos nobles efforts .... n'ont pas répondu à toutes vos espérances, vous ne devez en accuser que la mauvaise constitution de l'industrie, qui livre, de nos jours, le travail et la production à l'anarchie la plus déplorable, déjoue les meilleurs calculs, trompe les plus sages prévisions (.....), au milieu de cette guerre impie de la libre concurrence, qui ravage les pays de liberté, sous le séduissant mais fatal drapeau du laisser faire et laisser passer' (pp. vi-vii). The motto on the titlepage reads: Ne laissez pas tout faire. Ne laissez pas tout passer.Jobard worked for a couple of years in the Netherlands and became Belgian citizen in 1815. He introduced lithography into Belgium and opened an important shop. In 1839 he founded the Courrier belge and was appointed curator at the Musée de l'Industrie in 1841. He died in Brussels in 1861. - Name on title and half-title, half-title strengthened at innermargin.
