The translation is by F.A. Quétant & J.B. Lecuy. The work had a tremendous and instaneous appeal as a sort of gospel of the virtues of bourgeois thrift and common sense (see at length: Echeverria, Mirage in the West.) Includes, apart from "La Science ...." also: 'Interrogatoire de M. Franklin devant le Parlement d'Angleterre' (translated by P.S. Dupont de Nemours), followed by 'Constitution de la République de Pensylvanie, telle qu'elle a été établie par la Commission générale de Philadelphie, au mois de juillet 1776' and followed by 'L'interrogatoire de M. Penn à la Barre du Parlement au mois de novembre de la même année.'Second work: INED 2863; not in Kress; not in Higgs; not in Einaudi; not in Goldsmiths. First edition. Etienne Silhouette, to a certain extent influenced by the ideas of Fr. Quesnay, was controleur-général des finances in 1759. He planned to tax the land property of the nobility and to reduce pensions, which provoked his disgrace. - With label J.S. Dussi on front paste-down. A very nice copy.

First edition of this translation and followed by various other works, among which the famous Bonhomme Richard and various other pieces for the greater part not published before in French. There was an earlier publication of Franklin's memoirs, an unauthorized edition in 1791 by Gibelin, but it is in this edition the time Franklin spent at Passy is being dealt with. The first complete publication of his memoirs was published in 1868.

First work: Not in Camus; Weller, ii, 129; Conlon 51:635 (listing an edition printed in 'Francfort et Leipsic' in 62 pages only); Holzmann & Bohatta, 11995; INED 1907 & 1872 (for Formey's work). One of at least two editions printed in the year of its first publication.Rare and important treatise on legal reform in which Frederic collaborated with Cujacius. The work is both historical and political and discusses the origins of law in Greece, Rome, France, England and Germany, their structure and classification and how national culture influences the development and adaptation of laws. Formey's treatise covers the pp. 86-130. It argues in favour of interest as long as the interest is "honnête". - Small stamp in blank portion of half-title.Second work: Kress 5457; INED 3318; Goldsmiths 9074; Einaudi 4031 (all listing the first edition); Le Bucher bibliographique, 780; Weller, ii, p. 140. According to Lichtenberger in his Le Socialisme au XVIIIe siècle, this is, if not the most important socialist work of the 18th century, at least one of the most important works, and it is the theoretical foundation of his famous Naufrage des isles flottantes; ou Basiliade .......'Morelly argued that the code of nature was completely communistic. Starting out from the proposition that moral evil, the essence of which was avarice, could be explained by social conditions Morelly portrayed and advocated an ideal communistic society in which it would be 'impossible to be depraved.' (.....) In many respects Morelly's system anticipates the rationalistic utopianism of Fourier' (Kingsley Martin in ESS, vol. xi, pp. 10 ff).Morelly was 'tremendously influential in inspiring utopian socialism, for his theories are reflected in almost every one of the schemes of the Utopian socialists. In fact we must regard him, if not the founder, at least as the most conspicious forerunner of the Utopian Socialists. (.....) Of the writers of his time he was the one who saw most clearly the need of a new system to replace the old; he alone was truly constructive, for he actually outlined a new social structure which he thought would meet the needs should ancient society be overthrown. While others deserve merit as critics and analysts and destroyers, he alone deserves the name of utopianist at this early period' (Hertzler, J.O. The history of Utopian Thought, p. 186 ff). The work was severely prosecuted in France. This edition was apparently printed in Holland and destined for the French market. - A very nice volume with two important texts.

Augmented edition of Le secret des thrésors de France, also published in 1581, and hence the best edition of this valuable statistical analysis of public finances of the years 1550-1580. There are at least three different issues of the book: there are copies with 'Le' from the title printed in Italics and with an 'Epitre' at the beginning of the second book of either 16 or 30 pages, which copies are ordinarely found, and their are copies with 'Le' printed in Roman type and with the 'Epitre' in 16 pages, the scarcer copies. In all copies the 'Epitre' contains the same text, the difference being whether or not the text is printed in larger or smaller type. The present copy is with 'Le' printed in Roman type. Includes a statistical analysis of public finances of the years 1550-1580 and criticizes the 'régime fiscal' of the period. The author herewith anticipates writers as Boisguilbert, Vauban and Boulainvilliers, as well as the physiocrats. Froumenteau, the pseudonym of a protestant, gives also statistics on population and the damage caused by the wars of religion. Sometimes attributed to Barnaud. - The preface of part 2 is here printed in a small type, hence the preface has fewer pages than in other issues: to keep pace with the pagination of the rest of the volume, the numbering jumps from 16 to 33. - Somewhat browned throughout.

The author has written his name in full himself on the title of this copy, which has on verso of the title also an autograph dedication from the author to Victor Schoelcher. The text is entirely lithographed, apparently in a small number of copies and not put into the trade, as is stated in the first lines: 'Ce travail n'est point destiné à la publicité, il est adressé à quelques amis intimes .....' It contains a project for the organisation of general credit facilities.

Willems, Annexes, 2065; BMSTC, French Books 1601-1700, G-86; Brunet v, col. 1751-2. First edition, and according to Willems printed by Foppens in Brussels, one of two editions, this one without the errata and Pauwels spelled as Pauvvels. Ferdinand de Galardi was a Spanish diplomat and was active at the French and English courts, where he spent most of his adult life. The present work is a methodical treatise against Cromwell and is favorable to the Stuarts and the catholics in the Netherlands. The author wrote a number of other books on English, Spanish and Portugese politics and on diplomacy and belongs to the theorists of diplomacy. He was also the one who claimed that Spanish diplomats were inferior to their French counterparts because their recruitment depended more on high birth and wealth than on merit and experience.Second work: Willems, Annexes, 2059; not in BMSTC, French Books 1601-1700.Originally published as Relation de la captivité et liberté du sieur Emanuel de Arande, mené esclave à Alger en l'an 1640 ..... (Willems 1974), an account of the author's time in slavery between 1640 and 1642. A new edition was published in 1671, augmented to three parts. The present work is the separate publication of this third part, according to Willems destined for those who had already purchased earlier editions in two parts only. - Signature on title and front paste down: Johann S. Important work 'sur les recettes publiques' which contains a financial history and a theory of tax. 'Cet imporant ouvrage sur les recettes publiques contient une histoire financière et une théorie de l'impôt. Ganilh passe rapidement sur la partie historique et traite de la science du revenu public en 4 livres: législation et administration, dépenses publiques, contributions, comptabilité. En faveur de l'industrie et du bien-être, ainsi que pour une harmonie entre les consommations individuelles et sociales, mais contre le populationnisme agricole et l'impôt direct' (INED). Ganilh (1758-1836) 'was a mercantilist with considerable modifications, due no doubt largely to his extensive acquaintance with the economic literature of his own time' (Palgrave).

Contemporary marbled wrappers, uncut, as issued. Foster, Bibliography of Skating, 35. The rare first edition of the first French book describing ice-skating as an artisic and gracious form of moving, emphasizing grace and form, illustrated with 8 engraved plates: one as a frontispiece giving an overall view of a skating rink, engraved by Ambroise Tardieu, and 7 further engravings of individual skaters in a different pose. It is one of the first separate works in any language devoted to ice-skating. The book was published when ice skating became something fashionable to do for the members of the European aristocracy.Garcin, as opposed to the English approach, compared skating with dancing and stressed grace and artistry. The work was dedicated to Mademoiselle Gosselin, principal dancer at the Académie Imperial de Musique. In France, its was Marie-Antoinette who introduced skating to the court, and she seems to have been a rather accomplished skater herself. In England the first club was founded in Scotland, Edinburgh, in 1742, the Edinburgh Skating Club. At the end a short dictionary of ice-skater's terminology is added. Simon Peter Gasser (1676-1745) was appointed by Friedrich Wilhelm I to the first chair of economy to be founded in Prussia, at the University of Halle in 1727, where Gasser had until then been a lecturer in law. The present work, an introduction to the science of cameralism, and dedicated to his patron, the king - 'great conomus, and still greater soldier' - is his only work of the kind (he published numerous books in Latin on law). It represents an important landmark of cameralism, above all for its commentary on the king's desire to promote that science as a professional discipline in the universities, as signified by the new chair at Halle. As a writer of plays, essays, and novels, Gayarré is chiefly remembered for his histories of Louisiana, a state he served in various capacities during his life. He is considered one of New Orleans's first great historians.- The first twenty quires are browned (160 pages). Copy with signed dedication to the Comte de Maupassant, dated Paris, August 1, 1874, by Edmond Bermudez: Edmond or Edouard Bermudez (January 19, 1832 - August 22, 1892) was a Louisiana attorney who served as Chief Justice of the Louisiana Supreme Court from April 5, 1880 to April 5, 1892. He married Elizabeth Amanda Maupassant with whom he had nine children, five of whom died young. Amanda de Maupassant belonged to a family of great renown in France and was related to the comte de Maupassant.
