Amsterdam Paulus van Liender / Pierre Fouquet 1760 Première édition. Une très belle gravure de la vieille église d'Amsterdam. Gravée par Paulus van Liender d'après un original de Jan de Beijer, elle a été imprimée à l'origine en 1760. Elle fut ensuite réimprimée par Pierre Fouquet dans son "Atlas". Paris: Chez Nyon, Fils, Quay del Augustins 1725 Reliure plein cuir de l'époque, avec six nerfs au dos. Cinq panneaux décorés d'appareils dorés, et le 6ème d'une étiquette bordeaux et dorée. Feuilles de garde marbrées. Complet avec 34 assiettes pliantes. Il y a un curieux vandalisme sur la page de titre et la page de dédicace. Un ancien propriétaire a barré le nom du Duc du Maine, auquel le livre était dédié, et a colorié certaines parties de l'écusson du Duc. Dans la même encre est écrit « La livre ma coute 15 deniers » (mon livre qui coûtait 15 deniers). À la page suivante (la dédicace), l'écusson du duc a encore été effacé, ainsi que son nom et plusieurs des titres qui le concernaient. Le duc était le fils légitimé de Louis XIV, mais malgré cela, il était détesté par beaucoup qui le considéraient encore comme un bâtard. Les plats et le dos sont propres, Un petit choc en tête et en queue du dos, avec une touche de la couverture frottée. A l'intérieur, le livre et les planches sont propres et bien rangés à part le sabotage du Duc ! Belidor (1698 - 1761) était un Français né en Catalogne, professeur d'artillerie à La Fère, dont les travaux sur l'artillerie, l'ingénierie et l'hydraulique ont été largement diffusés au XVIIIe siècle. (24) 560, (32) pages. 250 x 200 mm (9Ÿ x 7Ÿ inches).

Contemporary full leather binding, with six raised bands to the spine. Five panels decorated with gilt devices, and the 6th with a burgundy and gilt label. Marbled end papers. Complete with 34 folding plates. There is a curious vandalism to the title page and dedication page. An early owner has crossed out the name of Le Duc du Maine, who the book was dedicated to, and has coloured in portions of the Duc's crest. In the same ink is written "La livre ma coute 15 denier" (my book which cost 15 denier). To the following page (the dedication) again the Duc's crest has been defaced, along with his name, and several of the titles which pertained to him. The Duc was the legitimised son of Louis XIV, but despite this, was disliked by many who still considered him a bastard. The boards and spine are clean, A little bumping to the head and tail of the spine, with a touch of the cover rubbed. Inside, the book and plates are clean and tidy other than the sabotage to the Duc! Belidor (1698 - 1761) was a Frenchman born in Catalonia, an artillery professor at La Fère, whose work on artillery, engineering and hydraulics was widely disseminated in the 18th century. Paris Chez Duchesne 1765 Première édition. Très bel exemplaire de l'édition originale de la tragédie patriotique Le Siège de Calais de Dormont de Belloy, qui connut un immense succès en 1765. Belle reliure de l'époque en veau marbré et glacé, dos lisse orné d'une pièce de maroquin rouge et d'un riche décor doré. Reliure très décorative, en bon état. La charnière supérieure est partiellement fendue, les coins sont un peu usés et le dos est légèrement frotté. Intérieur frais, quelques feuilles roussies. Petit cachet du propriétaire au bas de la page de titre. Dans l'ensemble, un très bel exemplaire. Le sujet dramatique est le siège de Calais (1346-1347) par Édouard III d'Angleterre, qui revendiquait la couronne de France pendant la guerre de Cent Ans. Il est tiré de Froissart et de Mézerai. Ce texte est relié à un autre texte publié la même année à Calais, sur le même sujet : Histoire d'Eustache de Saint-Pierre. Au siège de la ville de Calais, sous le règne de Philippe de Valois, roi de France, en 1346 et 1347. Suivi de la Lettre des Magistrats de Calais à M. de Belloy, sur sa Tragédie, et de celle de M. de Voltaire au même Auteur. First edition. A very nice copy of the original edition of the patriotic tragedy Le Siege de Calais by Dormont de Belloy, which was a huge success in 1765. Beautiful contemporary binding in marbled and glazed calfskin, smooth spine decorated with a piece of red morocco and rich gilded decoration. Very decorative binding, in good condition. The top hinge is partially split, corners a little worn, and a slight rubbing to the spine. Fresh interior, some foxed leaves. Small owner's stamp to the bottom of the title page. Overall, a very nice copy. The dramatic subject was the Siege of Calais (1346-1347) by Edward III of England, who claimed the crown of France during the Hundred Years War. It was taken from Froissart and Mézerai. This text is bound in with another text published the same year in Calais, on the same subject: History of Eustache de Saint-Pierre. At the siege of the city of Calais, under the reign of Philippe de Valois, King of France, in 1346 and 1347. Followed by the Letter from the Magistrates of Calais to Mr. De Belloy, on his Tragedy, and that of Mr. de Voltaire to the same Author. Dans les années 1990, Benbouchta dirige le magazine de mode et de culture Les Alignés. 300 x 240 mm

Includes 4 full page lithographs, including a double page spread at the centre. Limited and numbered. This is copy #35 of an edition of 900. Printed on vergé ivoire 250g on the presses of the printer Somigraf in Casablanca. Benbouchta is a Moroccan artist, educated in Canada and Paris. During the 1990s Benbouchta headed the fashion and culture magazine Les Alignés. 300 x 240 mm (11Ÿ x 9œ inches).

First edition. In original hardback binding, red half leather and green buckram binding with gilt stamped coat of arms decorating the front board. Leather on spine is worn, with some scrapes. Boards themselves are a lightened in places / watermarked. There is a small watermark to the top right corner of the first two pages in the contents. All page edges gilt. Marbles end papers. xcviii, 105 pp. 250 x 160 mm (9٠x 6Πinches). Signed by the author to the top of the title page. This is a message to what appears to say 'Philip Grove of Leeds', and references two pages within the book, that subsequently have the name Grove underlined. Other paragraphs the author wishes to draw Grove's attention to are marked in the margin in a couple of places.

Le portfolio est un peu assombri et présente quelques rousseurs. Le livre lui-même, également de couleur crème, est en excellent état. Les couvertures sont légèrement assombries. René Benjamin (1885-1948) est une figure littéraire française remarquable du début du XXe siècle. La carrière littéraire de René Benjamin est profondément marquée par la Première Guerre mondiale. This has a pocket to the rear which holds (almost hides) the 16 beautifully reproduced paintings by Jean LEFORT. These are all in different sizes. In excellent clean condition. The portfolio is a little darkened and with some foxing to it. The book itself, also in cream, is in excellent condition. The covers are fractionally darkened only. René Benjamin (1885-1948), was a remarkable French literary figure of the early 20th century. A prolific author, he distinguished himself in diverse genres, from novels to plays, including portraits and pamphlets. His work, imbued with sharp social observations and satirical wit, bears witness to the upheavals of his time. René Benjamin's literary career was profoundly affected by the First World War. Seriously wounded in September 1914, he spent several months in the Tours hospital where he wrote "Gaspard," a novel that earned him the prestigious Prix Goncourt in 1915. A tireless lecturer and committed polemicist, his career was marked by undeniable literary successes but also by political controversies, notably his support for Marshal Pétain during the Occupation, which brought him disgrace after the Second World War. Philadelphia Henry B. Ashmead. 1859 Rare. Première édition américaine de ce charmant livre pour enfants. Carton original en bougran avec titre et décoration gaufrés en doré sur la première page. Nouveau dos en tissu rouge assorti. Il y a une tache d'eau sur les 5 cm inférieurs des planches, qui a laissé une décoloration. Cette tache a également affecté les pages de garde avant et arrière ainsi que les blancs. Heureusement, le corps du livre lui-même n'a pas été touché. Les pages sont propres, avec juste un peu de manipulation et de noircissement. Signature soignée du propriétaire sur la page de titre. Illustration frontispice coloriée à la main de la "vieille infirmière à la maison". Page de titre illustrée. 64 pages, avec 90 illustrations coloriées à la main et de jolies illustrations colorées dans les coins. L'un des plus beaux livres pour enfants de l'époque victorienne que nous ayons vus. Cette édition semble avoir été imprimée un an après la première édition anglaise (Firstsearch), mais seule cette édition Ashmead semble avoir des illustrations coloriées à la main. Scarce. First U.S. edition of this delightful children's book. Original buckram boards with gilt embossed title and decoration to the front board. New matching red cloth spine. There is a water stain to the bottom 5cm of the boards, which has left a discolouration. This stain has also affected the front and rear end papers and blanks. Fortunately, the book block itself has not been affected. The pages are clean, with just a little handing and darkening. Neat owner's signature to the title page. Hand coloured frontis illustration of the "Old Nurse at Home". Illustrated title page. 64 pages, with 90 hand coloured illustrations and attractive corner coloured illustrations. One of the nicest Victorian children's books we have seen. This edition seems to have been printed a year after the English first edition (Firstsearch) but only this Ashmead edition appeared to have hand coloured illustrations. Anna Christina Witmond-Berkhout (1870-1899) était une écrivaine néerlandaise de livres pour enfants, surtout connue sous le pseudonyme de Tine van Berken. (13) pp. (including the verso of the front cover and the recto of the back cover), Soft cover. Centre stitched. The front cover is clean and attractive. A little splitting to the edge of the spine, with slight surface loss to the bottom edge (see photographs). The back cover is sound, but has a little staining to the bottom of the cover. Four further colour lithographed pages internally. The insides are mainly clean, with a touch of foxing to the edges. The binding is slightly loose inside (although still holding). Altogether a quite reasonable copy of a scarce work. Anna Christina Witmond-Berkhout (18701899) was a Dutch children's writer, best known under her pseudonym Tine van Berken. She also wrote adult books under the name Anna Koubert. 27cm x 22cm. .

Green printed paper wrappers. Titles to front and rear panel. Decoration to spine. Text is entirely in Italian. The green paper wrappers have a little marking to them and a little edgewear, but are still very presentable. Internally clean and tidy with a touch of marking only. Overall a sound copy. Carlo Odescalchi (1785-1841) was an Italian prince and priest. He was Archbishop of Ferrara, and later Cardinal Bishop of Sabina and Prefect of the Congregation of Bishops and Regulars. On several occasions he attempted to resign his posts and enter the Jesuits, but was refused permission by the Pope. Paris Bibliothéque Parisienne / Ferenczy éditeur. 1907 Première édition. Un très bel ensemble comprenant la série complète de « Les Tonsurés ». Il s'agit d'un recueil de quatre uvres à sensation, anticlericales, publiées en feuilleton. Elles ont été diffusées en 200 livres, de 8 pages chacun. À l'origine, chaque livre était publié sous couverture souple. Ceux-ci ont été reliés ensemble pour former un ensemble de trois volumes à quart de cuir rouge, avec des plats marbrés assortis. Titres, décorations et numéros de volume dorés sur le dos. Dans l'ensemble, les reliures sont en très bon état, propres, avec quelques légères traces d'usure. Le premier volume présente un petit éclat en haut du dos, qui a été restauré et recollé. Le coffret reste néanmoins très attrayant. Rare dans son intégralité (voire en tant que numéros séparés), peu de personnes ont conservé ces numéros hebdomadaires jetables. Magnifiquement illustré dans un style tout aussi sensationnel par Édouard Yrondy. Le premier fascicule porte la mention « Bibliothèque Parisienne, 48 rue de Lancry, Paris », les fascicules suivants étant marqués « Ferenczy éditeur ». Aucun des fascicules n'est daté, mais la mention « Bibliothèque Parisienne » indique une parution vers la fin de l'année 1907 ou en 1908. 1 600 pages réparties sur trois volumes. 330 × 240 mm (13 × 9œ pouces). Arthur Bernède (18711937) était un prolifique romancier populaire, dramaturge et librettiste français, devenu célèbre par la suite en tant que créateur de Judex et de Belphégor, et collaborateur de longue date des illustrateurs et des figures du cinéma en séries au sein de la Société des Cinéromans. Avant d'accéder à cette renommée, au milieu des années 1900, il écrivit une série de romans à sensation anticléricaux pour des éditeurs de « livraisons » bon marché des uvres de fiction au format brochure vendues par épisodes puis reliées en volumes. First edition. A lovely set of the complete run of "Les Tonsurés." This was a collection of four serialised, anti-clerical sensational works. They were issued in 200 parts, each of 8 pages. Originally, each was issued in a soft cover. These have been bound together into a three volume set of red leather quarter binding, with matching marbled boards. Titles, decoration and volume in gilt to the spine. Overall the bindings are in very good, clean condition with a little rubbing. Volume one has had a chip to the top of the spine, which has been restored / glued back in place. The set is still attractive. Internally clean and tidy, the pages are a little darkened only. Scarce in it's entirety (or even in the parts), few kept these disposable weekly issues. splendidly illustrated in equally sensational form by Édouard Yrondy. The first installment carries the imprint "Bibliothèque Parisienne, 48 rue de Lancry, Paris," with subsequent installments marked "Ferenczy éditeur." None of the installments are dated, but the "Bibliothèque Parisienne" imprint points to late 1907 or 1908. 1600 pages across three volumes. 330 by 240mm (13 by 9œ inches). Arthur Bernède (18711937) was a prolific French popular novelist, playwright, and librettist, later famous as the creator of Judex and Belphégor, and a longtime collaborator of illustrator/serial-film figures in the Société des Cinéromans. Before that fame, in the mid-1900s, he wrote a string of anticlerical potboilers for cheap serialized "livraison" publishers pamphlet-format fiction sold in installments and later bound into volumes. BERNHEIM, Hippolyte.

Strasbourg Typographie de G. Silbermann 1868 Première édition. Thèse de Bernheim à l'occasion de sa candidature à la Faculté de Médecine de Strasbourg pour le « concours pour l'agrégation de médecine ». Le concours était une méthode de recrutement typiquement française, qui désigne des examens compétitifs organisés principalement dans les milieux universitaires francophones pour recruter des enseignants en médecine de niveau universitaire. La thèse et les cours qui l'accompagnaient démontraient la capacité du médecin à enseigner au niveau requis. Au verso de la page de titre figurent les membres du jury et les noms des trois candidats au poste. Couverture souple bleue d'origine. Celle-ci est marquée sur la couverture avant et le dos est assez abîmé, avec quelques pertes. La couverture a toutefois protégé la thèse, qui est propre et soignée dans son ensemble. First edition. The thesis of Bernheim on the occasion of his application to the Faculté de Médecine de Strasbourg "concours pour l'agrégation de médecine." The concours was a particularly French method of recruitment, and refers to competitive exams primarily in French-speaking academic contexts for recruiting university-level medical educators. The thesis and accompanying lessons demonstrated the doctor's ability to teach at the proper level. The verso of the title page shows the members of the jury, and names the three competitors for the post. Original blue soft covers. These are marked to the front cover, and the spine is quite split with a little loss. The covers have protected the thesis though, which is clean and neat throughout. Petit calendrier (53 x 40 mm) collé sur un support en carton, teinté en violet et décoré de gaufrage et de découpes. Léger pli sur la couverture avant du calendrier, sinon intact et non utilisé. Belle publicité de restaurant contemporaine, immaculée, de grande taille, avec calendrier. Avion primitif.

Small calendar (53 x 40 mm) glued onto cardboard backing, tinted purple and decorated with embossing and die-cutting. Slight crease in the front cover of the calendar, otherwise intact and unused. Beautiful, pristine, large, contemporary restaurant advertisement with calendar. Primitive aeroplane.

Paris François Bernouard 1927 Première édition. Cet exemplaire fait partie des 200 exemplaires sur Vergé pur fil Vincent Montgolfier qui étaient non numérotés et réservés aux amis de l'auteur. Signée en dédicace de l'auteur au faux titre. La dédicace est à l'ami de Bernouard, l'acteur et peintre Pierre de Guingand, et se lit comme suit : "Pierre de Guingand 1902 - 1927. Amite toujours frère". Couvertures brochées en couleurs illustrées par Robert Bonfils. Un peu vieilli, et avec une légère inclinaison à la colonne vertébrale, mais remarquablement bon état. 108 pages. 185 x 125 mm.

First Edition. This copy is one of 200 copies on Vergé pur fil Vincent Montgolfier that were unnumbered and reserved for friends of the author. Signed in dedication by the author to the half title. The dedication is to Bernouard's friend the actor and painter Pierre de Guingand, and reads: 'Pierre de Guingand 1902 - 1927. Amite toujours frère'. Colour paperback covers illustrated by Robert Bonfils. A little age toned, and with a slight lean to the spine, but remarkably good condition. 108 pages. 185 x 125 mm (7Œ x 5 inches).

Genova Libreria Italiana Editrice 1946 Première édition. Livre d'art limité et signé retraçant les expériences de l'artiste pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale en tant que prisonnier de guerre. Couverture souple d'origine. Les légendes et le texte sont trilingues. Principalement en italien (c'est-à-dire à l'intérieur de l'image), avec un texte en anglais et en français à côté. Ils sont légèrement noircis et présentent plusieurs petites déchirures fermées sur les bords de la couverture. L'intérieur est propre et soigné, mais les bords des pages sont légèrement noircis. Les feuilles sont présentées à moitié intentionnellement non ouvertes (la partie intérieure de chaque double feuille est vierge). Une publication remarquable qui raconte l'expérience de l'emprisonnement dans un camp de concentration, non seulement à travers le texte, mais surtout à travers la vaste collection de dessins et de caricatures réalisés par le peintre et interné Alessandro Berretti. First edition. A limited signed art book of the artist's experiences during the second world war as a prisoner of war. Original soft covers. The captions and text are tri-lingual. Primarily in Italian (ie within the image) there is an English and French text alongside. These are a little darkened, and have several small closed tears to the cover edges. Internally clean and tidy, but with a little darkening to the page edges throughout. The sheets are presented half intentionally unopened, (with the inner part of each double sheet blank). A remarkable publication that recounts the experience of imprisonment in a concentration camp, conveyed not only through text but, more significantly, through the extensive collection of drawings and cartoons produced by the painter and internee Alessandro Berretti. These visual works merge documentary realism with a notable undercurrent of humour, a mode through which the artist sought a degree of psychological distance from the oppressive circumstances of captivity. The volume is organised into three principal sections: The Stations of the Cross; Captivity Seen in a Moment of Good Humour (featuring colour cartoons); and Snapshots of the Concentration Camp (caricatures). Comprend une couverture et 17 signatures de quatre pages (détachées dans des plis français). Quatre lithographies originales de Bellencourt (à l'exception de la couverture qui, bien que non créditée, ressemble davantage à un dessin d'Alenchinsky), toutes en une seule couleur (crème). Elles étaient originales pour ce numéro. Les couvertures souples sont acceptables, mais présentent des marques sur les couvertures avant et arrière. Le dos (de la couverture cartonnée) a été fendu et réparé à l'aide de ruban adhésif d'archivage, mais il est encore visible. L'intérieur est en excellent état, avec juste quelques marques. Un bel exemplaire d'un objet d'art rare. 68 pages. 360 x 280 mm

First Edition. A decent copy of this artist monograph. Comprising a cover and 17 four page signatures (loose in French folds). Four original lithographs by Bellencourt (not including cover, which although uncredited, looks more like an Alenchinsky design), all in a single (cream) colour. These were original for this issue. The soft covers are acceptable, but have marks to the front and rear cover. There has been a split to the spine (of the card cover) which has been repaired using archival tape, but is still visible. Inside is in excellent, original condition, with just a touch of marking to it. A nice copy of a scarce art item. 68 pages. 360 x 280 mm (14Πx 11 inches). .

New York Self Published 1918

Two works, offered together, on the subject of the acquisition of artworks by American museums. Both written by Edward Detraz Bettens. His mother (Louise E Bettens) had been a patron of the Fogg Museum's art collection. Each work was printed in 650 copies (un-numbered) for private circulation (it seems primarily among institutions and art buyers). The theme of each is to encourage and outline reasons for buying artwork directly from living artists, rather than through brokers. Picture Buying is the sequel, and much of it is containing responses and letters regarding the original publication. Both in green cloth, with high quality laid paper. 66, 88 pages + photographic plates. 250 by 160mm (9٠by 6Πinches).
