Sawyer (18761931) was a prominent London-based antiquarian bookseller and author, best known for his expertise in rare books and his influential role in the British and international rare book trade during the early 20th century. His firm, Chas. J. Sawyer Ltd., specialised in "anything suitable for a gentleman's library," with particular focus on rare items, early English literature, fine bindings, and sporting and colour-plate books. 235 x 165 mm (9Œ x 6œ inches). .

Cream softback covers. With a b/w frontis portrait of Burchartz, and 14 charming tipped-in samples of design - some in colour. Text in German. Inserted is a printed card which is signed in ink by Hermann Schardt. The card explains that the book is a gift to celebrate Max Burchartz's 70th birthday. The covers are slightly soiled and darkened in some areas. There is some wear to the head of the spine, and a taped reference number to the tail of the spine. Unpaginated. 295 x 170 mm (11œ x 6Ÿ inches). Max Burchartz was a well-known professor of typography at the famous art academy. Burchartz is considered one of the most important designers of the modern age; among other things, he created the design of the modern door handle. With 3 short texts by H. Schard, J. Lampe and J. Gebser.

SCHENKER, Nicolas

Geneva / Geneve N/A 1820 Non datée, mais probablement de 1818-1822, cette belle aquarelle de Marie dans le style de Raphaël, bien que non signée a une attribution/provenance sur papier de l'époque légèrement inclinée. Cela indique qu'il a été peint par Schenker et provient d'une collection. Il fut offert par Ferdinand Dupon (?) en souvenir de ses deux petits frères. Il grave avec Gâtine les illustrations de la série 'Le Bon Genre' éditée par La Mésangère. Il était aussi manifestement un aquarelliste de talent.

Undated, but likely from 1818-1822, this fine watercolour of Mary in the style of Raphaël, although unsigned has a contemporary paper attribution / provenance lightly tipped to it. This states that it was painted by Schenker and came from a collection. It was given by Ferdinand Dupon (?) as a souvenir of his two little brothers. Edged in gilt, the painting is in very good condition, with just a couple of tiny marks to it. 110 by 80mm (4Œ by 3Œ inches). Schenker (1760-1848) was primarily an engraver, born in Geneva, worked Paris. Pupil of Saint-Ours and Macret, he studied intaglio printing. Worked for Bartolozzi in England and France. Director of the 'Ecole de gravure de Genève' (1817-1822). He engraved with Gâtine the illustrations for the series 'Le Bon Genre' published by La Mésangère. He was also clearly a skilled water colourist. .

Netherlands 1960 Une étude originale, aux pastels secs avec trois images de nus. Peut-être une base pour la sculpture, car l'uvre montre des torses, et est plus sculpturale qu'érotique. La signature est difficile à déchiffrer, mais semble être E Schepp ou similaire. Le travail montre une habileté évidente, et est en très bon état. An original study, in pastels with three nude images. Perhaps a basis for sculpture, as the work shows torsos, and is more sculptural than erotic. The signature is difficult to decipher, but appears to be E Schepp or similar. The work shows clear skill, and is in very good condition. Appears to have been drawn in the 1960's or 1970'sMounted in passe partout. The work is held in a glazed wooden frame. The price shown here is for the pastel itself, in the passe partout, but unframed.If you wish the frame, then this is also possible for a small additional cost. Paris A Bés et F. Dubreuil 1855 Un bel exemplaire de cette rare caricature. Vers 1850-1855, Napoléon III, pièce de la guerre de Crimée. Deux hommes regardent une collection de têtes de cochons. Le marchand montre un panneau indiquant que 5000 têtes de cosaques ont été conservées après la dernière expédition. Signé dans la planche par Scherer. La partie colorée mesure 31 cm x 23,5 cm. La feuille mesure 43 cm x 30,5 cm. L'image est en très bon état. L'entourage blanc est un peu assombri et présente quelques traces d'usure. Trous d'épingle sur le bord supérieur. Cachet du ministère de l'Intérieur et de la préfecture de police au verso vierge. Exemplaire similaire conservé au musée Carnavalet. Réf. 320234162.

A nice copy of this scarce caricature. Circa 1850-1855, Napoleon III, Crimean war piece. Two men are looking at a collection of pigs heads. The merchant points to a sign saying that 5000 Cossack heads were preserved after the last expedition. Signed in the plate by Scherer. Coloured portion 31cm x 23.5cm. is sheet is 43cm x 30.5cm. The image is in very good condition. The white surround is a little darkened and with some edgewear. Pin holes to the top edge. Ministry of the Interior prefecture of Police stamp to the blank verso. Similar copy held at the Musée Carnavalet. Ref. 320234162. .

Sur la page de titre se trouve un joli cachet armorié à l'encre bleue, provenant de Rigi Kaltbad, une commune de Suisse. Les pages elles-mêmes sont en excellent état, propres et nettes. Orange soft covers with black titles. Attractive mottled finish. Very good condition without significant wear. Title page, 1 sheet of text and 8 sheets of woodcuts (including title woodcut). Nice copy. First edition of the important woodcut series by the Franconian artist Rudolf Schiestl. To the title page is an attractive armorial stamp in blue ink, from Rigi Kaltbad, a commune in Switzerland. The pages themselves are in excellent, clean and tidy condition. Printed signature to the first plate. There was also a special edition of 600 copies on larger paper using the woodblocks cut by Schiestl himself. 225 by 270mm (8Ÿ by 10Ÿ inches) .

Very nice copy of thir first edition with a warm gift inscription from the author to the politician and journalist Woodrow Wyatt. Clean, slightly darkened dust wrapper, now protected with a mylar cover. Clean, slightly rubbed grey boards. Internally clean and tidy. Inscription in red ink to the front end paper, and Wyatt's bookplate to the inside front board. X, 505 pages. 235 by 160mm (9Πby 6Πinches). Wyatt was initially a Labour politician and MP from 1945-1970 Afterwards he became a broadcaster and journalist. Over time he moved away from the Labour party, and on becoming friends with Margaret Thatcher, moved significantly to the right. His memoirs were described as "Mischievously indiscreet diaries" (Andrew Neill).

Bonn Tobias Habicht 1865 Bel exemplaire de cette grande carte en leporello de la route du Rhin, avec le texte qui l'accompagne. Le titre complet en allemand est "Neuestes Panorama des Rheins von Köln bis Mainz". Le titre est également indiqué en français et en anglais, ce qui suggère que cette carte était destinée à un usage touristique. A nice copy of this large leporello map of the route of the Rhine, with accompanying text. Full title in German is "Neuestes Panorama des Rheins von Köln bis Mainz" The title is also shown in French and English, suggesting that this was intended as a tourist product. Original brown hardback with arabic looking borders and decoration. The spine has been renewed with black cloth. The boards are quite darkened and rubbed but are still substantially sound. There is a 44 page (88 column) booklet in German describing the route of the Rhine. This has been re-attached to the binding with black tape and the last leaf has lost a little text as a result. The map itself is in very good, clean condition. 11 panels are in a cloth strengthened leporello. Attractive vignette engravings (64 apparently) across the map. Blank to verso. There are a few light stains and marks, but nothing significant. Overall a very nice copy. 28cm x 17cm. Full size of map is 187cm x 17cm. .

The boards are a little rubbed. Spines have raised bands, and are in good shape, but have no sign there was ever a title to them. Inside the books have some contemporary ink names and notes to front blanks, plus some sealing wax residue, and a small stamp (perhaps from a library) that has been crossed through.
