Les images font la satire de la femme européenne moderne et de son attachement aux vêtements, au sex-appeal, à la musique swing, à Hollywood, au "nouveau look" et aux soldats américains. Le portfolio est un peu assombri et présente des déchirures sur les bords. Le nom du propriétaire précédent figure sur le rabat intérieur. The portfolio is a little darkened, and has closed tears to the edges. Previous owner's name to the inside flap. The plates themselves are in good, clean condition with no significant marks. Esslingen am Neckar J.F. Schreiber 1840 Éditions différentes. Deux volumes (sur cinq) de ces feuilles colorées à la main pour les enfants. Chacun est complet en soi. Nous proposons la première partie, publiée en 1840, et la troisième partie, en 1844. Malgré le titre de la première partie (qui prétend traiter des plantes vénéneuses), cette deuxième édition traite des objets de la maison, des bâtiments, des animaux, et en particulier d'un grand nombre d'oiseaux. Six pages de table des matières (en caractères gothiques allemands) décrivent en détail ce qui est représenté sur chaque planche. La deuxième partie présente des "objets naturels étrangers classés par emplacement géographique". Il y a un avant-propos de Schmid, puis un index alphabétique. Viennent ensuite les descriptions détaillées des planches en allemand (pages 1 à 18). Suivent les descriptions en français (pages 1-9). Viennent ensuite les planches. Celles-ci sont réparties entre le Nord (c'est-à-dire les plaques polaires), les plaques 1 à 4 ; l'Asie. Plaques 5-12 ; Afrique, plaques 13-21 ; Amérique (nord et sud) plaques 22-28 ; et enfin Océanie, plaques 29-30. Cette rare collection d'estampes pour enfants contient chacune 30 doubles pages, avec des illustrations colorées à la main sur différents sujets. Nous proposons donc ici 60 doubles pages. La reliure est en carton rigide recouvert de papier ancien, avec des bosses et des pertes de papier en surface. Le dos a été renouvelé il y a quelques temps avec du tissu d'archivage. Pas de titres. Le contenu des premières pages se détache de la reliure, mais tient encore ensemble. Les planches elles-mêmes, bien que brillantes et attrayantes, présentent des pertes sur les bords et des déchirures fermées sur un certain nombre de pages. La plupart des pertes se situent dans les marges (mais une feuille a perdu une partie de l'illustration). L'état des feuilles s'améliore au fur et à mesure que le livre avance, de sorte que vers la fin, elles sont pour la plupart en bon état. Il y a de jolis dessins et illustrations tout au long de l'ouvrage, en particulier dans le deuxième volume. Il est intéressant de noter que plusieurs des planches d'Amérique montrent des esclaves travaillant dans les plantations. La partie consacrée à l'histoire naturelle du monde est remplie de belles illustrations régionales. Dans l'ensemble, un exemplaire acceptable d'un ouvrage très rare. (nous n'avons trouvé aucun exemplaire en vente au moment du catalogage). 32cm x 22cm.

Differing editions. Two volumes (of five) of these hand coloured sheets for children. Each is complete in itself. We offer the first part, published in 1840, and the third part, in 1844. Despite the title on the first part (which claims that it is concerned with poisonous plants), this second edition printing is concerned with objects around the house, buildings, animals, and particularly a large number of birds. Six pages of contents (in gothic script German) outline in detail what is shown on each plate. The second part is showing "foreign natural objects arranged by geographical location". There is a foreword by Schmid, then an alphabetical index. There are then descriptions in detail of the sheets in German (pages 1-18). Following this are descriptions in French (pages 1-9). Then the plates. These are split into the North (ie polar) Plates 1-4; Asia. Plates 5-12; Africa, plates 13-21; America (north and south) plates 22-28; and finally Oceania, plates 29-30. This scarce children's collection of prints, each contains 30 double page sheets, with hand coloured illustrations of different subjects. So here we are offering 60 double plate sheets. The binding is in old paper covered stiff card, with bumping and loss of surface paper. The spine has been renewed quite some time ago with archival cloth. No titles. The contents for the first few pages are breaking away from the binding - but still holding together. The plates themselves, although bright and attractive, have loss to edges and closed tears to quite a few of the pages. Most of the loss is to the margins (but one sheet has lost a portion of illustration. The sheets improve as the book goes on, so towards the rear, they are mainly in good plus condition. There are some lovely designs and illustrations throughout, particularly to the second volume here. Of particular note, is that several of the America plates are showing slaves working in the plantations. The part of the natural history of the world is full of lovely regional illustrations. Overall, an acceptable copy of a very scarce item. (we can find no copies for sale at the time of cataloguing). 32cm x 22cm. .

In very good condition, with a touch of marking and rubbing only. Slight bumping to the corners. Small area to the front cover with an old tape repair (not particularly noticeable). Inside, the thirty plates are in very good condition. Slightly darkened to the edges only. The plates are held in the binding by hinges, and a few of the plates have been re-set / reinforced in position. Overall an excellent example. 320 by 210mm (12œ by 8Œ inches). Anvers / Antwerp chez J. Haest 1665 Bel exemplaire de cette gravure de Cornelius Schut, sous un grand passe partout. Signée dans la planche, publiée par Haest d'Anvers. En parfait état, cette gravure représente l'Adoration des Bergers. Avec la Sainte Famille à gauche et des angelots dans le ciel. Le texte gravé indique "Cor : Schut in cum priuileg ; à Anvers chez J.Haest" Très bonne impression avec tonalité de la plaque sur papier vergé avec de grandes marges tout autour. 15,7 x 11,0 cm. Le passe partout mesure 40 cm x 29,5 cm et est très propre. Il n'y a pas de marques ou de trous ni d'usure des bords de la feuille. Il semble qu'il s'agisse d'un troisième état de la gravure, qui a été retravaillée par Haest après la mort de Schut. Une pièce rare.

A lovely copy of this engraving by Cornelius Schut, under a large passe partout. Signed in the plate, published by Haest of Antwerp. In near perfect condition, this engraving shows the Adoration of the Shepherds. With the Holy Family on the left and cherubs in the sky. The text engraved states Cor: Schut in cum priuileg; à Anvers chez J.Haest.Ž Very good impression with plate tone on laid paper with generous margins around. 15,7 x 11,0 cm. The passe partout is a generous 40cm x 29.5cm, and is very clean and neat. There are no marks or holes / edge wear to the sheet. This appears to be a third state of the engraving, which was re-worked by Haest after Schut's death. A rare item. .

Schwartz était un poète et romancier néerlandais qui écrivait en anglais (et publiait en Angleterre). Autrefois très apprécié, il est aujourd'hui plutôt oublié. xii, 79pp.

First edition. Original blue cloth with gilt titles to front board and spine. Binding is in spotless condition. The book block is partially uncut. Internally clean, but with sporadic foxing. Schwartz was a Dutch poet and novelist, who wrote in English (and published in England). Once highly rated, he is now rather forgotten. xii, 79pp. .

Une dédicace imprimée amusante « au bibliographe qui s'est assuré contre la folie ». Rien n'indique s'il a dû faire jouer son assurance. Slight fading to the boards and spine. Otherwise only fractional bumping. Inside in excellent, clean condition throughout. Many pages are uncut. There is an attractive bookplate by Åke Busenitz, for Åke Andersson, almost certainly the Swedish Olympic Bronze medal winner (1952). 25cm x 16cm. 96 pages. An amusing printed dedication "to the bibliographer who insured himself against going mad." There is no indication if he had to make a claim. There are no copies of this handmade edition available at the time of cataloguing. .

What he sought there in vain: depth of feeling, clarity of expression, nobility of form, here he found it expressed. Schwind was influenced by his circle of friends with and around Franz Schubert and Franz von Schober. He took part in the "Schubertiades" (1821-1828), belonged to a reading society founded in 1822, whose members gave themselves names from the Nibelungenlied - Schubert was called "Volker the Singer" and Schwind "Giselher the Child" because of his youth - and repeatedly illustrated the same originals "that had also inspired his friend Schubert to musical utilisation" (e.g. Goethe's ballads "An Schwager Kronos", "Der Erlkönig", "Der Schatzgräber").

Includes frontis portrait of Edward Drummond Libbey plus several b/w plates and in text b/w illustrations and photographs. The dust jacket has some small areas of loss, and is very faded to spine - but the book itself is in a very good state. Now protected in clear Mylar wrap to help preserve the dust jacket. xvii + 398 pages. 245 x 160 mm (9٠x 6Πinches). This work encompasses not only the fine details of technology (directly responsible for the development of glassmaking, particularly from 1880 on), but goes into the metamorphosis of labour relationship, labour costs, factory management, output, price, and even into earnings and dividends paid. The leading part a handful of men in Toledo (Ohio) seem to have played in upscaling production is part of America's industrial history.

First edition with these illustrations. Original grey wrappers. One of 1600 copies. This is a presentation copy. Signed in dedication by the illustrator, Ronald Searle. It is inscribed on the FFEP with a message from Ronald Searle and his wife Kaye to his friend Leonard Russell and his wife, dated Christmas 1952. Leonard Russell was an English journalist and satirist, well known as editor of the annual miscellany known as 'The Saturday Book'. No printer identified, but assume same as other copies available. [3] 44 [2] pages. 295 x 220 mm (11œ x 8Ÿ inches). Wrappers are a little age toned / grubby. There has been damage to the book from dampness, which has particularly affected the inside back cover, and the last two pages. Overall a good early presentation copy.

First Edition. A rare work, from an early Chagall exhibition. Pink soft cover catalogue of an exhibition held in April 1925, at the Gemälde-Galerie of Kölnischer Kunstverein in Cologne. The pink covers are a little faded and has a small area of loss to the bottom of the spine. The spine has been reinforced with archival tape. Inside, a small area of loss to the top of one plate has been visibly repaired. There is archival strengthening to the end papers. 18 pages, with four b/w plates. Covers age toned at edges. A few German newspaper clippings have been lightly tipped into the rear of the catalogue. Also tipped into the rear is a 12 page booklet, "Statut des Kolnischen Kunstvereins" (Statutes of the Cologne Art Association). Overall though in decent condition. 220 x 140 mm (8Ÿ x 5œ inches). Paris Imprimerie de Selves fils 1834 Une collection fascinante de documents. Un atlas géographique, utilisé comme il se doit, avec un certain nombre de documents manuscrits d'étudiants reliés. Le contenu comprend : L'atlas géographique, complet avec les 16 cartes double page colorées à la main (comme demandé). Elles sont toutes en bon état, propres et brillantes. Il y a quelques annotations à l'encre au verso des cartes, mais les cartes elles-mêmes sont magnifiques. Elles représentent toutes le monde antique et indiquent qu'elles ont été produites par Libraire Hachette en 1833 ou 1834. En plus de ces cartes, plusieurs grandes cartes manuscrites dépliantes sont reliées au début de l'atlas (entre le titre et la première carte). Plusieurs d'entre elles sont signées Belize Romain - comme ce nom est également griffonné plusieurs fois à l'intérieur des planches, nous supposons qu'il s'agit de l'étudiant qui les a réalisées. Les tableaux manuscrits sont les suivants (1) "Mesures de solidité" comparant les mesures anciennes et modernes. Sur le premier feuillet de ce tableau figure un autre texte manuscrit, avec des mesures et du texte ; (2) "Tableau des mesures decimales" (3) "Mesures de superificie" (surface). (4) "mesures de longuer" (5) "mesures de contenouce". Les planches intérieures avant et arrière portent les traces d'un étudiant qui s'ennuyait, avec des gribouillis et des griffonnages. Les planches extérieures sont reliées de manière bon marché dans un papier taché, avec une étiquette en papier noirci sur la première planche. Les planches sont défraîchies et présentent des signes d'utilisation. Dans l'ensemble, il s'agit d'une belle collection de manuscrits d'étudiants des années 1830. [i], [V], 16 pp. 200 x 135 mm.

A fascinating collection of papers. A geographic atlas, used as it should be, with a number of student manuscript documents bound in. Contents comprise: The atlas Géographique, complete with the 16 double page hand coloured maps (as called for). These are all in good, clean and bright condition. There are a few ink annotations to the blank reverse of the maps - but the maps themselves are lovely. These are all of the ancient world, and state that they were produced by Libraire Hachette in 1833 or 1834. In addition to these maps, bound into the front of the atlas (between the title and the first map) are several large folding manuscript charts. Several of these have been signed Belize Romain - as this name is also doodled several times to the inside of the boards, we assume this is the student who made them. The manuscript charts are: (1) "Mesures de solidite" comparing ancient and modern measures. To the front facing leaf of this is a further manuscript text, with measurements and text; (2) "Tableau des mesures decimales" (3) "Mesures de superificie" (surface area). (4) "mesures de longueuer" (5) "mesures de contenouce." The front and rear inside boards show the evidence of a bored student, with doodles and scribbles. The outside boards are cheaply bound in stained paper, with a darkened paper label to the front board. The boards are scruffy and show signs of use. Paris Éditions Pierre Lafitte 1917 Première édition. A été relié en toile brune, avec titre estampé doré au dos. Papier d'origine du dos, collé à l'intérieur du premier plat. Entièrement illustré de 150 dessins n/b. Pas de jaquette. Les pages brutes sont vieillies / teintées, mais dans l'ensemble dans un bon à très bon état. 247 pages. 210 x 160 mm (8Œ x 6Œ pouces). Les dix articles rassemblés ici ont été initialement publiés dans le journal français «Le Journal», lorsque le SEM travaillait comme correspondant de guerre pendant la Première Guerre mondiale. Le vrai nom de SEM était Georges Goursat (1863 - 1934).

First edition. Has been rebound in brown cloth, with gilt stamped title to spine. Original paper from spine, laid in to inside front board. Fully illustrated with 150 b/w drawings. No dust jacket. Rough cut pages are aged / toned, but overall in a good to very good condition. 247 pages. 210 x 160 mm (8Πx 6Πinches). The ten articles collected here were originally published in the French newspaper 'Le Journal', when SEM worked as their war correspondent during WW1. SEM's real name was Georges Goursat (1863 - 1934).

Paris 1919 Un joli pochoir coloré à la main extrait de l'"Album Le Grand Monde à l'Envers". (Deuxième série) publié en 1919. Sem a publié cet album immédiatement après la guerre. Lorsque la création de l'impôt sur le revenu avait terrifié les riches, Sem avait imaginé les grands et les bons de ce monde réduits à de petits métiers, chacun dans sa spécialité. Au Café de l'Opéra, deux messieurs en tenue de soirée exécutent des tours de "chasse au ballon". En contrebas, un grand homme surveille la plage à côté de sa bicyclette. À l'opposé, une dame loue des maillots de bain. On voit également un homme à vélo qui vend L'Avenir et un homme qui vend Le Gaulois. Belle impression. Les couleurs sont vives. (Ces pochoirs étaient imprimés avec de la couleur et finis à la main). Une bonne feuille, propre, avec de légères marques. 52 x 33 cm. Un exemplaire de cette estampe se trouve dans les merveilleux Musées de la ville de Paris. Inventaire : G.20661-1 SEM - Georges Goursat (1863-1934) était un caricaturiste français célèbre à la Belle Époque. Outre les caricatures qui l'ont rendu célèbre, il a créé des uvres d'un style très différent en tant que correspondant pendant la Première Guerre mondiale. Ses uvres ultérieures ont été très influencées par "l'âge du jazz" et la haute société parisienne des années 1920.

A lovely hand coloured pochoir taken from the "Album Le Grand Monde à l'Envers." (Second series) Published in 1919. Sem published this album immediately after the war. When the creation of Income Tax had terrified the wealthy, Sem had imagined the great and the good of this world reduced to small jobs, each in his own speciality. In the Café de l'Opera, two gentleman in evening dress perform "hunt the ball" tricks. Below is a large man beside his bicycle, watching the beach. To the reverse, a lady is renting out bathing costumes. There is also a man on a bike selling L'Avenir and a gentleman selling Le Gaulois. Nice print. The colours are bright. (These pochoirs were printed with some colour and were hand finished). A good, clean sheet, slight marking only. 52 by 33 cm. A copy of this print is held in the wonderful Les Musées de la ville de Paris. Inventory: G.20661-1 SEM - Georges Goursat (18631934), was a French caricaturist famous during the Belle Époque. As well as the caricatures which made him famous, he created work in a very different style as a correspondent during World War I. His later work was very influenced by the "Jazz Age" and high society in Paris during the 1920's. .
