First edition. Eleven short stories of rural Irish life, with illustrations by Somerville. Frontis with tissue guard, and nine other full-page illustrations. Original grey cloth, lettered in black and gilt. This copy was a gift from the author Philip 'Henry' Gosse, the English naturalist, to Ada (the daughter of the author Maarten Maartens ). Dedication to FFEP is dated 1905. [viii], 274, [6] pp. 200 x 135 mm (7٠x 5Πinches). Spine cloth is starting to split at the head, and there are signs of tiny water splashes to tail of spine. Foxing throughout, but overall this is a reasonable copy.

New York Columbia University Press 1963 Première édition. Couverture en papier. Couleur crème avec motifs et texte. Légèrement assombri et quelques petites entailles. Sur une couverture rigide en papier bleu/gris. Le livre est en bon état, propre dans l'ensemble. Février 2025 semble être le bon moment pour cataloguer ce livre sur la procédure régulière à la Maison Blanche. L'auteur utilise la crise des missiles de Cuba comme exemple clé. 94 pages. 20 cm x 14,5 cm.

Book is in good, clean condition throughout. February 2025 seems the right time for us to catalogue this book of due process in the White House. Couverture originale en tissu bordeaux gaufré à l'or. Celles-ci sont un peu décolorées et présentent quelques frottements, mais elles sont encore en bon état. Le joli frontis montre "Le sapeur de dix ans" (l'une des quatre histoires de l'ouvrage). L'intérieur est propre et bien rangé, avec un léger noircissement sur les pages seulement. 18 cm x 11,5 cm. 88 pages. Un ouvrage rare. These are somewhat faded and with a little rubbing, but still in sound condition. The lovely frontis shows "Le sapeur de dix ans" (one of the four stories in the work). London Burns & Lambert 1863

First edition. Original burgundy cloth with gilt decoration and titles. Lengthy gift inscription prayer to the front end paper from Sister Mary Clare of Syon Abbey, Devon. A touch of marking to the boards, but not too bad. Fading to the spine. Internally clean throughout, with a touch of darkening. The prayer to the front free endpaper shows the book to have been a gift from a nun to her niece / Goddaughter, for New Year 1873. An attractive volume. 72 pp + 2 pp advertisements. Émile Souvestre (1806-1854) was a French novelist whose best known work was "Le Monde Tel Qu'il Sera"; a dystopian science fiction work full of predictions. His works often had moral messages within them.

LONDON Thomas Basset and Richard Chiswell 1676 Attrayant exemple en couleur de la carte de Lincoln de Speed, tirée d'une édition ancienne (1676) du Speed's Theatre of Great Britain. Elle comprend plusieurs armoiries et un grand plan en médaillon de la ville de Lincoln. La coloration à la main est attrayante et brillante, mais il y a des marques et des taches sur les bords de la carte, ainsi qu'un léger assombrissement. Il y a de vieux trous d'épingle dans les coins où l'on a épinglé la carte au mur ! Au verso, les pages 63 et 64 contiennent la description du Lincolnshire et la liste des centaines du comté. La décoration du titre du texte identifie l'édition comme étant celle de 1676. Pli central. Il y a quelques restes de ruban adhésif au verso et quelques petites réparations avec du ruban adhésif d'archivage. 42cm x 54cm. L'historien britannique John Speed est peut-être le cartographe anglais le plus célèbre du XVIIe siècle. Sa réputation repose sur deux grands livres : The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine, produit initialement en 1611-1612 et A Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World, publié en 1627, le premier atlas général du monde créé en Angleterre.

Attractive full colour example of Speed's map of Lincoln, from an early (1676) edition of Speed's Theatre of Great Britain. Includes multiple coats of arms and a large inset plan of the town of Lincoln. The hand colouring is attractive and bright, but there are marks and stains to the edges of the map, and a little darkening. There are old pin holes to the corners where one pinned to the wall! To the rear are pages 63 and 64 with the description of Lincolnshire and list of the Hundreds in the county. The decoration of the text title identifies the edition as that of 1676. Centre fold. There are a few tape remnants to the verso and some small repairs with archival tape. 42cm x 54cm. British historian John Speed is perhaps the most famous English mapmaker of the seventeenth century. His reputation rests on two great books: The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine, produced initially in 1611-1612 and A Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World, published in 1627, the first general atlas of the world to be created in England. .

Un des 1000 exemplaires non numérotés sur papier fait main imprimés par Charles Whittingham & Co. à la presse de Chiswick. Les couvertures souples originales des parties ont été conservées et reliées à l'arrière. Récemment réparé / ré-épinglé en cuir rouge avec les planches d'origine en cuir rouge. Certaines planches présentent quelques taches, mais dans l'ensemble elles sont en très bon état. A l'intérieur, les livres sont sains, mais les bords sont légèrement assombris. München & Berlin Friedr. Bruckmann's Verlag C1870 Huitième édition (mentionnée sur la page de titre). Texte de Spielhagen, portrait de Goethe en frontispice et 21 planches photographiques de dessins originaux de Kaulbach. Plein cuir rouge avec titres dorés et décorations estampées à froid. Toutes les tranches sont dorées. Les bords sont un peu abîmés et frottés, mais dans l'ensemble l'ouvrage est en bon état. La reliure est légèrement secouée mais tient bien. Il y a quelques rousseurs éparses par endroits, mais la plupart sont assez légères. Les planches photographiques ont été collées sur du carton. Binding is slightly shaken but holding well. There is a little scattered foxing in places, but mostly fairly light. Photographic plates have been pasted onto cardboard. Overall a good signed copy.

SPOONER, William.

London William Spooner C1845 Première édition. Une jolie lithographie coloriée à la main, qui s'inscrit dans la vague de popularité suscitée par la série « Mrs. Caudle's Curtain Lectures » de Douglas Jerrold, parue dans le Punch en 1845. Le mari se fait harceler par sa femme, qui lui dit qu'elle aurait aimé être derrière lui à la foire de Greenwich. Il jette un coup d'il par-dessus son épaule, sachant que son manteau est déchiré de bas en haut. D'autres éditeurs, tels que Spooner, ont repris ce personnage du mari dominé par sa femme. L'artiste est ici anonyme, ce qui n'est pas inhabituel pour les publications de Spooner à cette époque. La lithographie a été imprimée par Kohler et L'Enfant. Elle est joliment encadrée sous un passe-partout triple dont la couche supérieure est ornée d'une décoration encrée à la main. Elle est protégée par une vitre dans un cadre en bois à effet marbré. Le cadre présente quelques légères bosses et traces d'usure sur les bords, mais est par ailleurs en excellent état. La caricature elle-même est en très bon état, avec seulement quelques légères rousseurs. Légère décoloration sur la partie bordeaux du passe-partout. (Celle-ci pourrait être nettoyée si l'uvre était temporairement retirée du cadre). Dimensions de l'image : 30 cm x 23,5 cm. Dimensions du cadre : 47 cm x 39 cm.

First edition. An attractive, hand coloured lithograph which followed the wave of popularity of Douglas Jerrold's "Mrs. Caudle's Curtain Lectures" which ran in Punch in 1845. The husband is being nagged by his wife, who says that she would like to have been behind him at Greenwich Fair. He looks over his shoulder, knowing that is coat is torn from the bottom to the top. Other publishers, such as Spooner, adopted the character of the hen pecked husband and his wife. the artist is anonymous here, which is not unusual for Spooner's output in this period. The lithograph was printed by Kohler and L'Enfant. Attractively framed under a triple pass partout with hand inked decoration to the top layer. Under glass in a wooden marbled effect frame. The frame has a touch of bumping / edgewear, otherwise excellent. The caricature itself is in very good condition, with a touch of light foxing only. A little discolouration to the burgundy portion of the passe partout. (This could be cleaned if removed from frame temporarily). Image size 30cm x 23.5cm. Frame size is 47cm x 39cm. .

Presumed First edition. Undated but circa 1867. Humorous version of Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe. Illustrated with childlike caricatures on a school blackboard slate. The soft cover's title reads: To The Admirers of Native but: Uncultured Genius: This Version of Robinson Crusoe Done with Slate Pencil in the manner of the very earliest masters is submitted by McLoughlin Bros, New York. Spine slightly split at tail, a little light soiling, offsetting from illustrations inside, but overall good. 26 pages. 250 x 190 mm (9Ÿ x 7œ inches).

Dated August 12th 1858 - the paper is headed ' De Beauvoir Town' - the note offers thanks to Mr. von Koch, who was the Royal Chancellor of Justice in Sweden, and was interviewed twice for the book. Original hardback brown embossed Celtic knot decorated buckram. Gilt stamped title to spine. Complete with woodcut frontispiece (Dalecarlian peasants). Pxii, 232 pp. 185 x 125 mm (7Πx 5 inches). Covers lightly rubbed, but starting to split at head and tail of the spine. Foxing inside, and pages are age toned. Binding a little loose, but overall in good condition.

[Parigia] Stella 1657 Première édition. Huit eaux-fortes de la série 'Les Jeux et Plaisirs de l'Enfance', Claudine Bouzonnet Stella d'après Jacques Stella. La surface gravée est de 12cm x 14cm. Les feuilles mesurent 17,5 cm x 23 cm. L'édition est difficile à identifier, car nous n'avons que les gravures (pas la page de titre) et elles sont rares. Cependant, nous les avons identifiées comme étant identiques à celles qui se trouvent dans les collections du Victoria and Albert Museum. Le musée les a attribuées à la première édition de 1657. Les tirages sont identiques à ceux que nous avons trouvés, à la différence que dans le coin inférieur droit, certaines éditions sont numérotées 1-n. D'autres (dont la nôtre) sont numérotées 1-n. D'autres (dont la nôtre) sont numérotées a.2, a.3, etc. L'état est bon, mais un peu marqué et assombri. Légères rousseurs et manipulations. Les tirages que nous possédons sont : Le Sabot (a.2) ; L'escarpolette (a.3) ; Le Bain (a.7) avec un léger pli au coin ; Le Guerre (b.1) avec une légère tache sur la moitié supérieure ; Le Petits Canons (b.2) avec des taches de rousseur et une déchirure fermée de 2 cm sur le bord inférieur (n'affectant pas la zone gravée) ; Le Culebute (b.4) ; Le Palet (b.6) marquant modérément Le Court Baston (c.4). Nous n'avons pas trouvé d'exemplaires de ces impressions originales disponibles à l'achat au moment du catalogage. Claudine Bouzonnet Stella a succédé à son oncle Jacques Stella à la tête de l'atelier d'estampes de sa famille au palais royal du Louvre en 1657. Cette année-là, elle grave et publie les dessins de Stella pour cinquante scènes de jeux de putti, dont celle que l'on voit ici. Ce livre a circulé dans toute l'Europe et a servi de source visuelle pour les arts décoratifs du XVIIIe siècle.

First edition. Eight Etchings from the series 'Les Jeux et Plaisirs de l'Enfance', Claudine Bouzonnet Stella after Jacques Stella. Engraved area is 12cm x 14cm. The sheets are 17.5cm x 23cm. The edition is difficult to identify, as we have only the engravings (not title page) and they are rare items. However, we have identified these as identical to those in the Victoria and Albert Museum holdings. They have attributed them to the 1657 first edition. The prints are the same as others we have found, with the difference that in the bottom right corner, some issues are numbered 1-n. Others (including ours) are numbered a.2, a.3 etc. Condition is good, but a little marked and darkened. Slight foxing and handling. The prints we hold are: Le Sabot (a.2); L'escarpolete (a.3); Le Bain (a.7) with light crease to corner; Le Guerre (b.1). light stain to top half; Le Petits Canons (b.2) foxing spots and a 2cm closed tear to the bottom edge (not affecting engraved area); Le Culebute (b.4); Le Palet (b.6) moderate markingLe Court Baston (c.4). We can find no copies of these original printings available to purchase at the time of cataloguing. Claudine Bouzonnet Stella succeeded her late uncle, Jacques Stella, as the head of her family's print workshop at the Louvre royal palace in 1657. That year, she engraved and published Stella's designs for fifty scenes of putti playing games, including the one seen here. This book circulated throughout Europe, eventually serving as a visual source for the eighteenth-century decorative arts. .

Deux burins originaux gravés par Achille Ouvré en frontispice, dont un portrait de l'auteur (dans le second volume). Bel exemplaire de cette première édition sur papier somptueux, la seconde estampe, un peu à la manière de Laboureur, montre une dame en chemisette, les seins nus, surprise au pied du lit par l'intrusion d'un homme tout aussi stupéfait. (Dans le premier volume). Cette estampe apparaît en fait en deux exemplaires (les deux en tant que frontispices). L'un des exemplaires comporte du texte sous le frontispice, le second n'en comporte pas. Couvertures en carton gris propre. Cependant, la carte est assez fragile et présente un léger froissement sur le bord du premier volume. Le volume 2 présente une perte et un éclat à un coin du panneau avant. A l'intérieur, les ouvrages sont propres et bien rangés. Certaines pages ne sont pas coupées. XX, 300, [iv], 388. Pages. Texte compilé et annoté avec une préface et une bibliographie par Henri Martineau. 20.5cm x 15cm. First edition thus. Two softcover volumes, grey covers printed in black. One of 25 deluxe copies on Auvergne paper. (This is copy X). Two original burins engraved by Achille Ouvré as frontispieces, including a portrait of the author (in volume two). A fine copy of this first edition on sumptuous paper, the second print, somewhat in the manner of Laboureur, shows a lady in a chemisette with her breasts bared, surprised at the foot of the bed by the intrusion of an equally stunned man. (In volume one). This print, in fact appears in duplicate (both as frontispieces). One copy has text beneath it, the second is without. Clean grey card covers. However, the card is quite brittle, and has light creasing to the edge of volume one. To volume two there is some loss with a chip to a corner of the front panel. Inside, the works are clean and tidy throughout. Some pages are uncut. XX, 300, [iv]., 388. Pages. Text compiled and annotated with a preface and bibliography by Henri Martineau. 20.5cm x 15cm. First edition. Softback, with cover design and header by Fré Cohen. Cohen was a Dutch graphic artist and illustrator who famously illustrated all the works for the Centrale van Arbeidersjeugdverenigingen - later known as the AJC. Covers and contents are delicate and age toned. There is a neat previous owner's name to the front, but overall this is a good example. 83 pages. 195 x 135 mm (7Ÿ x 5Œ inches).
