Stillingfleet, Edward.

London: R. W. for Henry Mortlock 1673 Edward Stillingfleet (1635-1699) was an Anglican theologian from Cranborne in Dorset. He was known as "The beauty of Holiness" for his good looks. He preached at St Margaret's, Westminster, on the day after the Great Fire in 1666. He was a leader amongst the "Latitudinarians" a group of young Anglicans, named pejoratively as "men of latitude" for the ease in which they switched side from the Parliamentary to the Royalist position after the Restoration. He was predominantly low church, and wanted reconciliation with Presbyterians - but certainly not with Catholics. Later he became the Bishop of Worcester (1689)

Contemporary full leather, strengthened at some point. Recent burgundy label with gilt titles. The book has no end papers, and begins with the imprimatur pasted down to the front board. The final page is pasted to the rear board. The work begins with the title page. The book is in three parts. There is a lengthy "General preface", followed by the Contents, and "An examination of the pamphlet entituled Dr. Stillingfleet against Dr Stilllingfleet". The third part is "An answer to the book entitled, Dr Stillingfleet's Principles Considered". [LXXXVI], 1-12, 13-73,[i], 75-291. pp The original boards are a little rubbed and bumped, but still holding well. The spine has been strengthened and although the leather appears cracked, it is holding well. The label is bright. Inside, the binding is quite cracked to the front hinge, but still secure. A contemporary hand has practiced it's writing of "imprimatur" to the inside board. The rest of the book is in good clean condition, with only moderate darkening. A tiny amount of edge wear to the title page, but nothing significant. This work was the culmination of an attack on Catholicism which began with the Discourse in 1671. Edward Meredith and the recusant Catholic Thomas Godden replied on the Catholic side, and here he continues his attack. His attack is wide ranging, from objecting to the Pope's decrees and the Council of Trent, through to accusing Ignatius Loyola of fanaticism.

London Menry Mortlock 1662 Deuxième édition. Très bel exemplaire de ces ouvrages théologiques. Reliés en un seul volume. Le premier est une tentative de compromis entre l'Eglise établie et le protestantisme, avec un appendice sur l'excommunication. Le second livre est une première édition datée de 1663 avec un titre en rouge et noir. Plaques de cuir brun foncé de l'époque. Le dos a été renouvelé avec l'étiquette d'origine en cuir noir et les titres dorés. Les coins de la reliure sont un peu abîmés, mais l'ouvrage est par ailleurs solide. Second edition. A very nice copy of these theological works. Bound together in one volume. The first is an attempt at a compromise between the established Church and Protestantism, with an appendix on Excommunication. The second book is a first edition dated 1663 with red and black title. Contemporary dark brown leather boards. A renewed spine with the original black leather label and gilt titles laid down. A little bumping to the corners of the binding, but otherwise sound. First Dutch Edition. Original brown buckram with gilt titles and decoration to the front board and spine. (Slightly bumped and with a slight lean to the book. Owner's ink inscription to the inside front board. There is a faded library stamp and quite a few small perforated stamps throughout to the bottom edge (not affecting text). 7 lithographed plates (by Steen & P.W.M. Trap). Plates are in good condition. The pages are a little darkened to the edges, but overall a decent copy of this scarce first edition. VIII, 346, [ii] pages. 190 by 120mm (7œ by 4Ÿ inches).

Hardcover, bound in the original publisher's lovely silk-covered boards, sewn with threads in traditional Chinese style, upper board richly illustrated in gilt, and with gilt lettering. First edition. Includes list of dynasties; notes on the history and technique of Chinese drawing and painting; supplement of plates illustrating Chinese bronzes, ceramic art, and jade (separate title page). The silk covered boards are in very good to fine condition, a little discoloured (darkened) to the edges. Tiny split to the head of the spine. Internally In fine internal condition. Exceptionally well preserved, crisp plates. 280 x 220 mm (11 x 8Ÿ inches). Collotype is one of the most accurate and attractive methods of photomechanical tonal printing processes. Highly skilled and expensive process, it cannot produce more than a limited number of impressions. It has been used for single-sheet prints and luxury portfolios, and since the 1950s has been abandoned by all except a few small specialist firms Strehlneek owned an art gallery in Shanghai. In 1930, he was advertising this as the oldest establish firm dealing with art objects for the collector.

En avril et mai 1989, des manifestations étudiantes y ont eu lieu, suivies d'un massacre le 4 juin. Les autorités et la police ont tenté de contrôler les images prises, mais Katja Stuke a filmé plusieurs heures de séquences à cette époque et lors de la fête nationale chinoise en octobre. À partir de ces images, elle a extrait des centaines de portraits. Le livre associe ces portraits à des coupures de journaux collectées et diffusées par le Musée du 4 juin à Hong Kong afin de perpétuer le souvenir des manifestations de 1989. Non paginé [560 pages]. 'Nationalfeiertag', is a book about one of the biggest, and most monitored squares in the world: Tiananmen Square in Beijing. In April and May of 1989 student protests took place and there was a massacre on June 4th. Officials and police attempted to control the images taken, but Katja Stuke filmed a few hours of material at the time and on the Chinese National Holiday in October. From this footage she extracted hundreds of portraits. The book combines these portraits with newspaper clippings which are collected and spread by the June 4th Museum in Hong Kong to keep the memory of the protests of 1989 alive. A lovely collection of these Sporting novels, 80 hand coloured illustrations (plus a further 4 unlisted but hand coloured title vignettes). Uniform half morocco with patterned cloth boards. Gilt titles and decorations to spine. The bindings are in very good condition, with a little unobtrusive rubbing only. Internally, the books are all in good, clean condition. The hand coloured plates are attractive, with a little intermittent foxing only. A very nice group of Victorian illustrated hunting books. Unsure of edition, but from the titles listed to title pages, it would seem that these are all later editions. L'emballage est propre, avec une touche d'entaille et d'usure des bords et avec une déchirure fermée de 1 cm à la tête de la colonne vertébrale. Maintenant dans un film d'archives protecteur. Couverture cartonnée en toile verte propre et soignée avec juste une touche de bosse. Le livre est en bon état de propreté partout. Ce qui est intéressant à propos de cet exemplaire, c'est qu'il y a une inscription cadeau au verso du faux titre, indiquant que le livre a été pris à l'ambassade d'Iran peu de temps après que le SAS eut mis fin au siège de l'ambassade en 1980. L'annotation prétend qu'il a été prise de l'ambassade une heure après le siège, mais à part cela qui semble peu probable (avec des problèmes de sécurité à l'époque), la date indiquée est en fait 3 semaines après la fin du siège. Il n'y a aucune preuve que cela soit vrai mais une chose étrange à inventer et nous l'offrons comme une bizarrerie intéressante ! 414 pages. 220 par 150 mm

First edition in dust wrapper. Wrapper is clean, with a touch of nicking and edgewear and with a 1cm closed tear to the head of the spine. Now in protective archival film. Hardback in clean and neat green cloth with just a touch of bumping. Book is in good clean condition throughout. What is interesting about this copy, is that there is a gift inscription to the verso of the half title, stating that the book was taken from the Iranian Embassy shortly after the SAS had ended the embassy siege in 1980. The annotation claims that it was taken from the embassy an hour after the siege, but apart from this seeming unlikely (with security concerns at the time) the date given is actually 3 weeks after the end of the siege. There is no evidence that this is true but a strange thing to make up and we offer it as an interesting oddity! 414 pages. 220 by 150mm (8Ÿ by 6 inches). .

SWOMI

France S.P. 1971 Quatre uvres d'art originales. Aquarelles pro-Cuba de 1971 réalisées par un artiste français inconnu qui signe ses uvres « Swomi ». Les quatre uvres sont de style expressionniste et fortement influencées par le pop art. L'artiste était manifestement un admirateur du Cuba de Castro, puisque c'est le thème de ces uvres. Le style et la taille de ces uvres les rapprochent presque de des affiches. 85 cm x 50 cm. Bien que l'artiste soit inconnu, ces uvres saisissantes et colorées constituent une excellente conclusion à la collection de l'ère hippie. Dans l'ensemble, elles sont en bon état, avec quelques marques. Légères entailles sur le bord du carton. Le portrait de Castro présente de légers dégâts causés par l'eau.

Four original art works. 1971 pro Cuba water colours by a French artist, unknown who signs his work Swomi. The four are all expressionist style artworks with a strong pop art influence. The artist was obviously a fan of Castro's Cuba, as these are the theme. The style and size makes these almost posters. 85cm x 50cm. Despite the artist being unknown, these striking and colourful works make a great end of the hippy-era collection. Overall in good condition, with a few marks to them. Slight nicks to the edge of the card. The portrait of Castro has slight water damage. Would look great framed up as a one off set. .

SWYNCOP, Philippe.

Bruxelles S.P. C1920 Première édition. Un recueil de huit caricatures lithographiques de grande qualité, représentant des artistes de l'époque par Swyncop. Chaque planche est signée au crayon par Swyncop. Elles sont rassemblées dans un simple dossier de couleur crème, avec un titre en noir sur la couverture. Légèrement taché. Les planches elles-mêmes (chacune mesurant 27 cm x 20,5 cm) sont imprimées sur du papier vergé de grande qualité. Les noms des artistes représentés sont inscrits au crayon au verso de chaque feuille. Il s'agit de : Alexandre Jacovleff (peintre néoclassique russe) ; Anto Carte (peintre figuratif et expressionniste belge) ; G. Henry (peintre écossais de l'école de Glasgow), Jean Duchastain, Paul Hymans (homme politique belge. Il s'est glissé parmi les artistes !) ; Crickboom (probablement Mathieu Crickboom, le violoniste belge) ; Charles Houben (peintre impressionniste belge) ; et Hubert Glansdorf (peintre figuratif belge). Philippe Swyncop (18781949) était un peintre, graveur, illustrateur, affichiste et caricaturiste belge.

First edition. A portfolio of eight high quality lithographic caricatures, representing artists of the day by Swyncop. Each plate is signed in crayon by Swyncop. They are gathered together in a simple cream folder, with black title to the front cover. Slight soiled. The plates themselves (each 27cm x 20.5cm.) are printed on high quality laid paper. The names of the artists depicted are written in pencil on the reverse of each sheet. The artists are: Alexandre Jacovleff (Russian Neo-Classical painter); Anto Carte (Belgian figurative and expressionist painter); G. Henry (Scottish painter of the Glasgow School), Jean Duchastain, Paul Hymans (Belgian politician. Snuck in with the artists!); Crickboom (probably Mathieu Crickboom the Belgian violinist); Charles Houben (Belgian impressionist painter); and Hubert Glansdorf (Belgian figurative painter). Philippe Swyncop (18781949) was a Belgian painter, etcher, illustrator, poster designer, and caricaturist. .

First Edition. Limited to 1000 copies. Signed dedication by Szyk to the colophon. This copy was inscribed for Mrs Wiltz W. Wagner. In dark green library binding, with gilt title to spine. Inside stamps and ID from New Orleans Public Library. Illustrated sepia plates and several colour mounted. No slipcase. Some finger marks to index at front, otherwise in very ggod condition for an ex-library copy. 7 preliminary leaves, 3-18, [1] pages, 1 leaf colour frontispiece, LXXIV plates (some colour). 315 x 225 mm (12œ x 8Ÿ inches). It's assumed that the Mrs Wiltz W. Wagner is Helen Bell Wagner, wife of Wiltz Walker Wagner Snr, a New Orleans native. At the end of World War II, Mr. Wagner served as New Orleans chairman of the 'Food for Famine Drive' for war-torn countries. Wiltz Walker Wagner Jr. Ph.D. (one of their sons) is Professor Emeritus USA Department of Pharmacology, University of South Alabama. Arthur Szyk (18941951) was a Polish-born Jewish artist who worked primarily as a book illustrator and political artist. in 1937 he moved to the United Kingdom. In 1940, he settled permanently in the United States, and was granted American citizenship in 1948. One of his finest works, published in the UK in 1940, was the Haggadah, which is considered his magnum opus.

Motifs estampés dorés au dos et étiquette de titre en cuir. La reliure est assez frottée, avec une usure des bords du dos avec une certaine perte de surface. Le dessin et le dos sont très décolorés. Titre gravé montrant une figure allégorique féminine tenant un miroir devant un dieu de la rivière avec une corne d'abondance. Une planche supplémentaire, par C. C. Duysent, montre un bouclier avec les portraits d'Auguste, de Livie et de Tibère. 16mo. Les feuilles de garde portent des marques et des signatures au crayon et à l'encre. Le coin de la première page de garde a été coupé pour enlever une signature. Le reste du livre est en très bon état, propre. Texte en latin. Un bel exemple de la typographie d'Elsevier. Pp. [xx]786 +[29] index. Publius Cornelius Tacitus, connu sous le nom de Tacite (v.AD 56 - v.120), était un historien et homme politique romain. Tacite est largement considéré comme l'un des plus grands historiens romains par les chercheurs modernes. 12.5cm x 8cm.

Gilt embossed designs to the spine and leather title label. The binding is quite rubbed, with edgewear to the spine edges with some loss of surface. The Design and spine are very faded. Engraved title showing a female allegorical figure holding a mirror before a river god with cornucopia. Additional plate, by C. C. Duysent, shows a shield with portraits of Augustus, Livia, and Tiberius. 16mo. End papers have pencil and ink marking and signatures. Tokyo Watanabe Shozaburo C1925 Première édition. Une jolie estampe sur bois dans la tradition de l'ukiyo-e. Fait inhabituel, il s'agit ici d'un « chirimen-e », c'est-à-dire d'une estampe sur papier crêpé, et non d'une estampe sur papier hosho plat standard. Takahashi a travaillé pendant de nombreuses années pour Watanabe Shozaburo, pour qui il a réalisé des centaines d'estampes sur bois. Cette estampe semble avoir été produite entre 1923 et environ 1932. L'uvre de Takahashi avait tendance à capturer l'essence de la vie quotidienne japonaise plutôt que de se concentrer sur des monuments célèbres. Cette estampe est répertoriée dans le catalogue de Shimizu Hiroaki (2005), numéro 249, page 55 (Musée des Beaux-Arts de Boston). La forme du sceau à double calebasse utilisée sur cette uvre est spécifiquement associée à sa signature « Hiroaki » plutôt qu'à sa signature « Shotei ». En particulier, la forme en croissant à la base permet de l'identifier comme le sceau « 1 » de la collection de sceaux Hiroaki de Shotei dot com. L'estampe mesure 21 cm x 15 cm. Elle est plus petite qu'une estampe standard, car le procédé permettant d'obtenir l'effet crêpé rétrécit le papier d'environ un tiers. Le bord gauche présente une légère usure, avec une perte minime de l'estampe (principalement au niveau de la bordure blanche), et les autres bords sont légèrement irréguliers. Sinon, c'est un très bel exemplaire.

First edition. An attractive woodblock print in the ukiyo-e tradition. Unusually, this was a chirimen-e, a crepe-paper print, rather than a print on standard flat hosho paper. Takahashi worked for Watanabe Shozaburo for many years, producing hundreds of woodblock prints for them. This print seems to have been produced from 1923 until about 1932. Takahashi's work tended to capture the essence of everyday Japanese life rather than focusing on noted landmarks. This print is recorded in the Shimizu Hiroaki catalogue (2005), number 249, page 55 (Boston Museum of Fine Arts). The double-gourd seal form used on this work is specifically associated with his "Hiroaki" signature rather than his "Shotei" signature. In particular, the croissant shape to the base identifies it as Seal "1" in Shotei dot com's Hiroaki seal collection. The print is 21cm x 15cm. Smaller than the normal print, as the process of making the crepe effect shrinks the paper by about a third. There is some edge wear to the left edge, with minimal loss of print (mainly to the white border) and the other edges are slightly ragged. Otherwise a lovely example. .

Rare First Edition. Circa 1907. Oblong folio album, original decorated silk padded boards, with silver embroidery and ties. All edges gilt. Title page printed on charcoal paper with decorated borders and text in silver, followed by 24 hand coloured collotype photographic prints on cream paper, with tissue guards. The silk boards have been professionally restored. In a very good condition. One of several similar albums produced by the studio of Kozaburo Tamamura, who was one of the originators in Japan of photographic albums of this kind for tourists. The subject of these photographs include Kyoto, Osaka, Shikoku, with scenes of temples, pagodas, rivers, lakes and Fujiyama etc, with captions in English. 420 mm x 190 mm (16œ x 7œ inches).
