A nice copy, albeit ex-Library, of this account of a turbulent period in Anglo-Irish Political History. Burgundy buckram, with gilt titles. Parnell had founded the Irish Parliamentary Party, which dominated Nationalist representation at Westminster, and stood a good chance of obtaining Home Rule from Gladstone's government. But when Parnell was cited as a party in the divorce of Katherine O'Shea, there was a scandal and rift. The party split, and this book contains the Times articles which told of the divisions in the subsequent year. It accounts for the period October to November 1890. Parnell died in October 1891. The front and read board are in good, clean condition, but there is a little fading and fraying to the spine. Library number to the base of the spine. Library sticker to the ffep and a few other library marks and writings elsewhere. Other than these, the book is in very good condition. 220 by 130mm (8Ÿ by 5 inches). XX, 196, [iv] pages.

Publiée par Isaak Tirion dans le cadre de l'ouvrage de Jan de Wanenaar intitulé « Amsterdam dans son essor, sa croissance, ses histoires, etc. » (« Amsterdam in zyne opkomst, aanwas, geschiedenissen, etc. »). La surface gravée mesure 21 cm x 38 cm. La page mesure 43 cm x 51 cm. Première édition. Également attribuée ailleurs à l'éditeur Fouquet dans le cadre de son *Atlas Van Fouquet*. Cependant, les dimensions de la planche et de la page confirment que l'édition de Tirion est la bonne.

Published by Isaak Tirion as part of Jan de Wanenaar's "Amsterdam in its rise, growth, histories,..," ("Amsterdam in zyne opkomst, aanwas, geschiedenissen,.etc.,"). engraved area is 21cm x 38cm. Page is 43cm x 51cm. First edition. Also elsewhere attributed to the publisher Fouquet as part of his Atlas Van Fouquet. However, the dimensions of the plate and page make the Tirion edition correct. .

The illustration is in excellent condition, with fine colouring. No damage to the illustration, or the frame.

Un récit populaire sur le ballon captif de Giffard (installé pour l'Exposition universelle de 1878 à Paris), dont la capacité était de 50 personnes, qui pouvaient voyager jusqu'à 500 m de hauteur. First edition, published July 1878. A popular account of Giffard's tethered balloon (installed for the 1878 Universal Exhibition in Paris. Its capacity was 50 people, who could travel to a height of 500 m. This was the first time that most people could see Paris from above, and it is estimated that 35,000 people took the flight. The balloon was lowered using a steam winch.) First published July 1878, reprints were required in September 1878, and in 1879. Original pale green soft covers with text to the front cover and a panorama of Paris from a balloon to the rear cover. The covers are a little foxed, and there is a small amount of lost to the base of the spine. This has been neatly repaired with archival tape. Frontis of a tethered ballon. Title page with pencilled date and inscription to the top. Internally, the book is clean and tidy, with a little foxing occasionally only. In addition to the frontis there are 2 double page engravings, and 13 single page engraved plates. Plus numerous other illustrations (some full page) 39 illustrations in total. 68 pages. A nice, original and complete copy of a scarce piece of ballooning history. 225 by 140mm (8Ÿ by 5œ inches). .

The 15 full page illustrations to the Kicklebury's are unsigned, the 8 plates in Rebecca & Rowena are attributed to Richard Doyle. These were two of the 'Christmas books' written by Thackeray. Clean full leather binding. A touch of rubbing. Spine is somewhat dulled. Internally clean, binding is firm but slightly shaken. 88, viii, 102 pages. 185 by 140mm (7Œ by 5œ inches).

Reliure contemporaine en demi-cuir rouge foncé. Titres et lignes dorés au dos. Planches marbrées. Les planches sont un peu décolorées et frottées, mais elles sont en bon état. Papiers de fin marbrés. Il y a un long commentaire encré sur la première page de garde, qui a été signé en haut. On ne peut cependant pas distinguer la signature. L'intérieur est propre et bien rangé, avec un peu de noircissement sur les bords des pages. Nombreuses notes manuscrites d'une personne anonyme, au crayon bleu dans les marges (probablement de la même main que les commentaires de la page de garde). 270 x 185 mm. 392 pages

First edition of this unusual work on Work from the end of the 19th century by Gabriel Guillemot (1855-1898) here signed under the pseudonym of Guy Tomel, polytechnician, he is also author of "Le Bas du pavement parisien" (1894) etc. Book illustrated with numerous engravings in and out of text in black on the subject of the condition of workers. Contemporary binding with half dark red leather. Gilt titles and lines to the spine. Marbled boards. There is a little fading and rubbing to the boards, but in good strong condition. Marbled end papers. There is a lengthy inked comment to the front end paper, which has been signed to the top. We cannot make out the signature though. Internally clean and tidy, with a little darkening to the page edges. Numerous handwritten notes from an anonymous person, in blue pencil in the margins (probably the same hand as the front end paper comments). 270 by 185mm (10٠by 7Πinches). 392 pages .

First edition. Hardback. Contemporary half calf rebacked, book-plate of the Tottenham Collection, Bath Guildhall Library. Signature of Ed Tottenham at the head of the title, "sold" stamp of Bath Municipal Libraries on the title. Lithographic frontispiece with the facsimile signatures of the two short-hand writers, T.J. Brown and Ed, Tottenham. The marbled boards are somewhat rubbed, but clean and tidy. There is chipping to the spine, and the top panel (1 inch) is detached (inside book awaiting repair). The title label to the spine has gone. Internally clean, but with some foxing spots. (ii) 484 pp.

La première page de garde vierge a été renforcée avec du ruban adhésif d'archivage. L'ouvrage se compose de trois parties. Chacune contient 30 numéros du Trombinsocope. Les parties 1 et 2 ont une page de titre, une liste de sujets et des publicités séparées. (ce qui n'est pas le cas de la troisième partie). Chaque numéro comporte quatre pages. La première comporte un titre gravé en haut de la page et une caricature du sujet par Lafosse. Il y a ensuite trois (et quelques) pages de texte. Veuillez noter que toutes les caricatures de cet exemplaire sont dans leur état non coloré. Les pages (et en particulier les premières) présentent des rousseurs modérées. First edition. A nice signed binding by Pagnant with three quarter brown leather, and brown marbled boards. Simple gilt titles to the spine. A little rubbing to the edges of the binding, but overall in good, clean condition. Marbled end papers. The first blank end paper has been reinforced with archival tape. The work is in three parts. Each holds 30 issues of Le Trombinsocope. Parts one and two have separate title page, list of subjects and adverts. (part three does not). Each issue is four pages. The first having an engraved top border title, and a caricature of the subject by Lafosse. There are then three (and a bit) pages of text. Please note - all of the caricatures in this copy are in their uncoloured state. The pages (and particularly the first few) have moderate foxing to them. A wide range of subjects, including politicians, monarchs, military and engineering notables etc. A few of the subjects have a framed statement instead of a caricature, stating that the image that should be there has been censored by the state. A nice collection of satires. 360 pages. 28cm x 18.5cm. .

Cachet de "Estampes d'Art Devambez". Très bon état, avec quelques manipulations sur les bords et un léger assombrissement. Première édition. 480 x 330 mm (19 x 13 pouces). André Jean Édouard Bonnafont, connu sous le nom d'Édouard Touraine, 1883-1916, était un peintre et illustrateur français. Il a collaboré au Journal, à La Baïonnette et à L'Illustration. Mobilisé en 1914, il s'engage dans l'aviation française et est abattu et tué en 1916 à l'âge de 33 ans.

Despite appearances, this print is named a woman in yellow by Devambez. High quality pochoir stencil print, enhanced with water colour. Stamp of "Estampes d'Art Devambez". Very good condition, with just a little handling to the edges and slight darkening. First edition. 480 by 330mm (19 by 13 inches). André Jean Édouard Bonnafont known as Édouard Touraine, 1883-1916 was a French painter and illustrator. He contributed to la Journal, to La Baïonnette, and to L'Illustration. Mobilised in 1914, he joined the French air force, and was shot down and killed in 1916 at the age of 33. .

The pages have attractive vignettes throughout. 203 pages. 155 by 115mm (6 by 4œ inches).

Couvertures souples, avec les pages coupées dans une variété de styles, beaucoup dans le style "édition grand papier" avec de grandes marges, des culs-de-lampe dorés, le texte dans une bordure dorée élaborée, des arabesques polychromes à pleine page, des filigranes ornementaux et des lettres majuscules initiales. Les exemplaires Hollande sont accompagnés de quatre illustrations en couleurs de Thomas (avec reprise des motifs d'arabesques au verso) sur des cartes séparées placées dans une enveloppe en glassine. Les bords de certaines pages sont un peu assombris et l'enveloppe s'est détachée de la moitié inférieure de la page 160/161 (elle tient encore fermement), mais il s'agit d'un bel exemplaire. 224 pages + table. 210 x 175 mm.

A lovely copy of this work. One of only 100 copies on Hollande (#131) from a total edition of 1984 copies. Soft covers, with the pages cut in a variety of styles, many "large paper edition" style with large margins. gilt cul-de-lamps, text within elaborate gilt border, full-page polychrome arabesques and ornamental filigrees and initial capital letters. The Hollande copies come with four full colour illustrations by Thomas with repeats of the arabesque designs to the verso) on separate cards held in a glassine envelope. The page edges of some pages are a little darkened, and the has separated to the lower half on page 160/161 (still holding firmly) otherwise a lovely copy. 224 pages + table. 210 x 175 mm (8Πx 7 inches). .

Hardback, covered in marbled paper covers with leather label to the spine. The preface is dated March 1796, and the pagination conforms to the first edition, but the date to the title page has been very neatly cut out. We are a little confused by this copy. The pagination is correct, and every page number is present as it should be - but there are 14 engraved head pieces by Thomas Stothard, and 8 engraved tail pieces (not 14 as other 1st edition copies mention). The is also no full page engraving. So this may be a second edition without engraving? The label is darkened, and the edge of the spine a little chipped, exposing the paper beneath. Still attractive though. A few light foxing spots, but the engravings are good clean impressions. The first section is of 'Elfin Eclogues', featuring characters from A Midsummer Night's Dream, with the remainder of the volume containing odes on various subjects, including: 'Music', 'Morning', 'Evening', 'the Glow-Worm', 'Love' and 'Youth'. vii, [1], 112 pp. 175 x 100 mm (7 x 4 inches).

La couverture arrière risque de se déchirer. Les couvertures sont propres mais légèrement noircies, et présentent quelques entailles et éraflures sur les bords. Intérieur en excellent état, légèrement noirci. Quelques légères taches de rousseur. Ornements de J. E. Laboureur. 132, [ii], [iv]. pages. 4 pages de publicités sur papier glacé (mais en noir et blanc) à la fin. L'un des premiers livres de cocktails destinés à être utilisés à la maison ! Livre relié en tissu vert avec titres dorés. Le livre est impeccable à l'intérieur et à l'extérieur. Un bel exemplaire. Il s'agit du premier recueil de poèmes de ce poète nord-irlandais. 36 pages. 22cm x 14.5cm.

Lovely copy of this first edition, flat signed by the author to the front end paper. Green dust wrapper, with a little fading to the spine only, and a touch of edgewear to the spine base. Otherwise clean and tidy. Hardback green cloth with gilt titles. The book is spotless inside and out. A lovely copy. This was the first book of poetry by this Northern Irish poet. 36 pages. 22cm x 14.5cm. .

Additions after 1630 are marked with the date of accession; towns underlined were seats of parlements (sic). Both book and dust jacket are in very good condition. Very small previous owner's name to top of front pastedown. Geoffrey Treasure was a popular history teacher and housemaster at Harrow School. He was the author of several books, mainly about France in the 16th and 17th centuries. 316 pages, including bibliography and index. 225 x 145 mm (8Ÿ x 5Ÿ inches). .

Bordeaux E. Philibert 1853 Première édition. Partition et paroles de « Le Régent de Mathématiques », chanson française populaire du milieu du XIXe siècle. Bien qu'elle ne soit pas datée, Worldcat indique qu'il s'agit d'une première édition de 1853. Sur la couverture figure une caricature non signée représentant un enseignant enseignant l'arithmétique à des garçons devant un tableau noir, avec un tableau ABC derrière lui. Cette illustration satirique correspond aux clichés éducatifs français du milieu du XIXe siècle. Les paroles sont d'Étienne Tréfeu (1821-1903), librettiste connu pour ses collaborations avec Offenbach. La musique est de Victor Robillard (1827-1893), compositeur de plus de 500 chansons populaires et chef d'orchestre au Théâtre du Palais-Royal. Chantée par W.E. Müller. La partition porte le cachet de E Vieillot, le vendeur parisien, indiquant qu'il a payé la taxe sur cette partition. À l'intérieur se trouvent la partition musicale et les paroles. Cela montre que Muller était accompagné à la guitare par Louis de Charlemagne. En face se trouvent des notes et une histoire accompagnant la chanson. La dernière page est vierge. Dans l'ensemble, la feuille est en bon état, bien qu'il y ait quelques petites entailles et marques sur les bords. Il y a également une très légère tache d'eau sur le tiers supérieur de chaque page (plus visible sur la dernière page vierge). Comme c'est souvent le cas avec les feuilles volantes et les livres de colportage, l'impression est quelque peu négligée : le L du titre est imprimé trop à gauche, et se trouve donc en réalité sur la page arrière. First edition. The score and story of "Le Régent de Mathématiques," a popular mid nineteenth century French song. Although undated, Worldcat states that this is a first edition from 1853. To the front cover is an unsigned caricature of a teacher instructing boys in arithmatic at a blackboard with an ABC chart behind him. The satirical illustration matches mid-19th-century French educational tropes. Lyrics by Étienne Tréfeu (18211903), a librettist known for Offenbach collaborations. Music by Victor Robillard (18271893), composer of over 500 popular songs and conductor at Théâtre du Palais-Royal. Sung by W.E. Müller. The sheet has the stamp of E Vieillot, the Parisian seller, showing that they have paid the tax on this sheet. Inside is the musical score and lyrics. This shows that Muller had a guitar accompaniment by Louis de Charlemagne. Opposite are notes and some supporting story to the song. The final page is blank. Overall in decent condition, although there is a little nicking and marking to the sheet edge. There is also a very light water stain to the top third of each page (most noticeable on the final blank page. The printing, as is common with broadsides / chapbook material, is somewhat careless, to the L of the title is printed too far to the left, and so is actually to the rear page. On sheet folded, so two leaves and four pages. Scarce, we can find no other copies available. Conforms to WorldCat / OCLC: 1249739559. This states only one library holding at the BnF. .

London G. Tregear 1835 Bel exemplaire de cette lithographie coloriée à la main, représentant un pauvre homme en haillons, avec un parapluie en haillons qui ne le protège pas de la pluie. L'orthographe laisse entendre qu'il s'agit d'un buveur. En haut à droite, il est indiqué qu'il s'agit du numéro 8 des "Flights of humor" de Tregear. Publié pour la première fois en 1831. Firstsearch / Copac indique qu'il s'agit de Flights of humour #7. Il semble qu'il s'agisse d'une impression légèrement plus tardive de la série. Belles couleurs attrayantes, avec un fort contraste. La carte rigide est légèrement assombrie / marquée à l'arrière-plan, mais reste un bel exemplaire de cette caricature rare. L'impression mesure 29,5 cm x 23,5 cm. Elle est légèrement plus petite que la première édition. Sinon, elle est conforme à l'OCLC : 1238037496. Deux petits morceaux de ruban adhésif au dos.

A nice copy of this hand coloured lithograph, showing a poor man in ragged clothes, with a ragged umbrella which doesn't protect him from the rain. The implication from the spelling is that he is a drinker. Printed to the top right, it states this is Tregear's Flights of humor #8. First published in 1831. Firstsearch / Copac states that this is Flights of humour #7. It seems that this is a slightly later printing of the series. Good attractive colours, with strong contrast. The stiff card is slightly darkened / marked to the background, but is still a nice copy of this scarce caricature. The print is 29.5cm x 23.5cm. This is slightly smaller that the first issue. Otherwise conforms to OCLC: 1238037496. Two small pieces of fixing tape to the rear. .
