Timbre acquitté sur la page de titre. Globalement en bon état. Il y a une petite marque sur les couvertures vertes, et des frottements sur le dos du papier, avec un petit manque. Intérieurement propre et bien rangé. Veuillot était un ultramontain français (celui qui place l'autorité du pape au-dessus de toute autorité séculière dans tous les domaines) et a beaucoup écrit en faveur de la papauté, et en particulier en critiquant les catholiques libéraux de l'époque.

Original green paper covers, with owner's name to the top of the front cover. Has the "Timbre Imperial Seine" and 5 cent. tax paid stamp to the title page. Overall in good condition. There is a little marking to the green covers, and rubbing to the paper spine, with a little loss. Internally clean and tidy throughout. Veuillot was a French Ultramontane (one who puts the authority of the Pope above all secular authority in all matters) and wrote much in support of the Papacy, and particularly criticising more Liberal Catholics of the time.

VIEN, Joseph Marie, & BENNET.

Paris Chez Bennet 1790 Un bel exemple de gravure à la sanguine de Bennet, d'après un dessin original de Joseph Marie Vien. Cette gravure n'est pas datée, mais elle indique que Vien est un professeur sous la protection du roi. Il a occupé le poste de "Premier peintre du Roi" de 1789 à 1791. Bon état, propre, avec un peu de noircissement et de froissement sur les bords seulement. Légère usure des bords. Le numéro 81 est imprimé en haut à gauche. Nous n'avons pas été en mesure d'identifier le pape représenté, et la seule image en ligne qui correspond à cette estampe a une attribution erronée. A lovely example of a sanguine engraving by Bennet, after an original design of Joseph Marie Vien. Undated, but states that Vien is a professor under the protection of the King. He held the role of "Premier peintre du Roi" from 1789-1791. Good, clean condition, with a little darkening and creasing to the edges only. Slight edgewear. It is printed No. 81 to the top left. We have been unable to identify which pope is pictured, and the only image online that matches this print has erroneous attribution. A large sheet, 51cm by 40cm (20 by 15Ÿ inches). .

VILLEBOEUF (André).

Paris la Librairie de France 1931 Première édition. Tirage limité à 125 exemplaires au total (dont 5 H.C.), celui-ci est l'un des 20 exemplaires imprimés sur Japon, avec une suite d'images supplémentaire et sous étui. Deux chemises en papier rigide / carte. Elles sont de couleur crème avec un léger assombrissement/marquage au dos. Le premier volume est le texte avec l'illustration intégrale. Le second est la suite supplémentaire. La chemise du texte est protégée par un glassine. Celui-ci est un peu marqué et présente quelques éclats. Au dos du glassine se trouvent deux petites étiquettes autocollantes faites à la main avec les titres. (faites à la main et non produites par l'auteur). L'étui est assombri mais en bon état. A l'intérieur, les deux volumes sont en parfait état de propreté. Le papier Japon est resté brillant et sans marque ni rousseur. Les illustrations sont accompagnées de protège-tissu. Le colophon numéroté se trouve à la fin du volume de texte. Il manque peut-être deux planches à la suite, qui en compte 32. Chacune correspond à une image dans le livre. Cependant, il y a une image d'un arbre avec une grande araignée, et une autre avec un hérisson et un lézard qui se battent. Ces deux images figurent dans le livre, mais PAS dans la suite. Il y a 34 gravures dans le livre. D'autres exemplaires en ligne indiquent 33 gravures (dans le livre), probablement sans compter la vignette du frontispice - qui fait partie de la suite. Le seul autre exemplaire disponible avec une suite ne mentionne pas de collation / nombre de planches dans la suite, nous sommes donc un peu perdus ! Néanmoins, il s'agit d'une belle collection de gravures dans le livre et d'une suite attrayante de 32 planches. Nous ne promettons pas l'exhaustivité. 68 pages non numérotées. 29cm x 21cm. First edition. A limited edition of only 125 copies in total (including 5 H.C.) this is one of only 20 copies printed on Japon, with an additional suite of images and in a slipcase. Two stiff paper / card folders. These are cream with a little darkening / marking to the spines. The first volume is the text with integral illustration. The second is the additional suite. The text folder is protected with glassine. This is a little marked and has a couple of chips. To the spine of the glassine are two small hand made label stickers with the titles. (home made not produced by the author). The slipcase is in darkened but good, strong condition. Inside, both volumes are in beautifully clean condition. The Japon paper has remained bright and without marking or foxing. The illustrations have tissue guards to them. The numbered colophon is to the end of the text volume. The suite perhaps lacks two plates, as there are 32 plates in the suite. Each corresponds to an image in the book. However, there is an image of a tree with a large spider, and another with a hedgehog and lizard fighting. Both are in the book but NOT the suite. There are 34 engravings in the book. Some other copies online state 33 engravings (within the book) presumably not counting the frontis vignette - which IS in the suite. The only other copy available with a suite doesn't mention a collation / number of plates in the suite, so we are a little confused ! Nevertheless a nice collection of engravings within the book and an attractive suite of 32 plates. We do not promise completeness. 68 unnumbered pages. 29cm x 21cm. Paris Libairie Théatrale, Artistique & Littéraire. 1919 Première édition d'un poème patriotique célébrant le retour de l'Alsace à la France après la Première Guerre mondiale. Couverture vert olive. Les coins sont légèrement rognés et les bords présentent des traces de brunissement. Le dos a été renforcé à l'aide de ruban d'archivage. À l'intérieur, la dédicace de l'auteur recouvre une partie du titre sur la première page. Les coins de plusieurs pages sont rognés et les pages présentent des traces de brunissement. Il s'agit d'un ouvrage court : le poème lui-même compte cinq pages, et le corps du texte en compte huit. 190 × 130 mm (7œ × 5 pouces). First edition of the patriotic poem celebrating the return of Alsace to the French after the first world war. Olive green covers. These have a cropped corner, and darkening to the edges. The spine has been reinforced with archival tape. Inside, the author's dedication covers some of the title to the first page. The corners of several pages are clipped and the pages are darkened. The work is reinforced throughout with archival tape. Sewn binding. A short work, the poem itself is five pages, and the text block is eight pages. 190 by 130mm (7œ by 5 inches). This poem belongs to a wave of Alsace-themed literature written just after the Armistice, when Alsace-Lorraine returned to France following 43 years of German annexation (18711918). The imagery in the opening lines (a stork watching from a bell tower for the "soldiers of deliverance," asking whether the joyful cries mean France has finally come to the rendez-vous) is a clear poetic allegory for the liberation of Alsace. The stork itself is the great folk emblem of Alsace, which makes it a fitting narrator/witness for the tale. In the same year as this was produced, the same publisher produced "La Fée d'Alsace" by Villeroy, performed by Sarah Bernhardt. The work has a dedication written to Suzanne Gonnel. She appears in period French press as an actress connected to the Odéon theatre in Paris. Amsterdam Franz de Bakker 1765 Première édition. Un bel exemplaire de cette gravure, représentant l'ancien hôtel de ville d'Amsterdam sur la place du Dam. Une belle impression propre. Relié à l'origine, avec un pli central à l'endroit où il a été plié. Léger assombrissement au bord de la page. Frans de Bakker (c. 1720-1767) était un graveur, illustrateur et dessinateur néerlandais actif à Amsterdam au milieu du dix-huitième siècle. Son uvre se distingue par une concentration sur le portrait et les sujets historiques. Reinier Vinkeles (1741-1816) était un peintre et graveur néerlandais, également originaire d'Amsterdam. Il a étudié avec Jan Punt avant de se perfectionner à Paris auprès de Jacques-Philippe Le Bas. Vinkeles s'est spécialisé dans l'illustration de livres, les gravures topographiques et les portraits.

First edition. An attractive copy of this engraving, showing the old town hall of Amsterdam in Dam square. A nice clean print. Originally bound up, with a central crease where folded. Slight darkening to the page edge. Frans de Bakker (c. 17201767) was a Dutch printmaker, illustrator, and draughtsman active in Amsterdam during the mid-eighteenth century. His oeuvre is distinguished by a concentration on portraiture and historical subjects. Reinier Vinkeles (17411816) was a Dutch painter and engraver, also from Amsterdam. He studied under Jan Punt before furthering his training in Paris with Jacques-Philippe Le Bas. Vinkeles specialised in book illustration, topographical prints, and portraiture. printed area is 28cm x 42cm. sheet size is 43cm x 50cm. .

London Mary Vint 1810 Première édition. Le Say's sunday Reporter était un journal hebdomadaire publié de 1799 à au moins 1810. Dans ce numéro, il était publié par Mary Vint - anciennement Mary Say de Londres. Le journal comprend des résumés des nouvelles militaires de la London Gazette, d'autres nouvelles londoniennes. On y trouve également un compte rendu de la prise de la Guadeloupe, tiré de la London Gazette Extraordinary du 15 mars. (il s'agit d'un long compte rendu de deux pages entières). Les nouvelles du dimanche comprenaient un compte rendu de la remise d'un drapeau de trêve par le général français Buonaparté. Les nouvelles des conflits européens sont également résumées. First Edition. Say's Sunday Reporter was a weekly newspaper published from 1799 until at least 1810. By this issue, it was published by Mary Vint - formerly Mary Say of London. The newspaper includes summaries of military news from the London Gazette, other London news. There was also an account of the capture of Guadaloupe from the London Gazette Extraordinary of March 15th. (this is a lengthy account of two full pages). The Sunday news, included an account of a flag of Truce being delivered from General Buonaparté of France. News of European conflicts was also summarised. News of fires in London, movement of ships etc. An account of Parliamentary Intelligence give summaries of proceedings in the House of Lords and the House of Commons. This includes and account of the conduct of ministers. There is also an account of a mutiny in India (which had happened in September 1809). The paper ends with lists of officers to be cour martialled, and lists of deaths and marriages. And of course, an advert for Doctor Harvery's anti venereal pills! A fascinating summary of life in England in 1810. 8 pages. Clean and tidy, with just a tiny amount of nicking to the page edges, and a couple of light foxing spots. Small tax paid stamp to the front cover - not affecting text. In excellent condition for age. Mary Vint / Say is a fascinating character. She married the publisher Charles Green Say, who produced three regular newspapers. When he died in 1775 she continued to publish alone. She later remarried becoming Mary Vint, but continued as a female newspaper proprietor! She was prosecuted for libel several times and in 1781 sentenced to six months in prison for libelling the Russian ambassador. Following libels of William Pitt in 1788, there were debates in parliament and she was prosecuted once more. Despite this, she continued publishing, eventually dying in 1832. 355 by 240mm (14 by 9œ inches). .

First edition. Paperback 10 page booklet commemorating the joining of two important Venetian families. Ennio Quirino Visconti; an Italian antiquarian and art historian was the leading expert of his day in the field of ancient sculpture, and at the time Director of the Museo Capitolino. Engraved Greek sculpture frontis depicts the head of Apollo. Text in Italian. In marbled brown paper covers. A very scarce item. Covers are slightly curled at edges, and there are a few small closed tears. A little grubby inside, with light water stain to bottom of all pages. 315 x 230 mm (12œ x 9 inches).

VISHNIAC, Roman

London Allen Lane 1984

Second printing of this fascinating photo-book. In hardback in brown boards, under original unclipped dust jacket. Foreword by Elie Wiesel, himself a Jewish prisoner in the Auschwitz and Buchenwald concentration camps. This book is illustrated with a comprehensive selection (180) of Vishniac's celebrated photographs of the Jews of Eastern Europe in the lead up to World War Two. Many of the photos are are full-page. The images were taken secretly, under difficult circumstances, between 1934 and 1939, and the negatives smuggled out sewn in to clothing etc. It is not an over statement to say that these photographs remain important to preserve for posterity unforgettable images of pre-war Jewish life. VISSCHER, Claes Jansz (after)

An attractive bird's eye view of the Hendrick de Keyser Beurs (stock exchange) of Amsterdam. Although clearly based upon the engraving by Claes Visscher, this print differs in quite a few details, and would seem to be a slightly later version. (Visscher's original engraving was 1612). Two sheets glued together, so obviously from a book. Now tipped onto hand made backing card with painted borders. The print is in very good, fractionally darkened state with a small crease to one corner. The board also has a few bumps. Engraved area 19cm x 29cm, Original sheet 27.5cm x 34.5cm, backing card is 37.5cm x 45cm. .

Columbia Teun Voeten 2001 En 2001, Barrancabermeja était la ville la plus violente de Colombie, où faisait rage une guerre entre les guérillas de gauche et les groupes paramilitaires de droite. First edition. A nice copy of this catalogue full of engraved examples of the staircases of Volland. Original hardback, with red cloth spines and marbled boards. Fractional rubbing, but holding well. Gilt titles to the spine. Internally clean and tidy throughout, with a fractional darkening to the pages only. Title page with Volland's statement to the verso. Company stamps to the title and blank pages. There is also a separate full page advert for Volland, which is a copy of the title page. 43 full page black and white plates, including a double plate. Complete. Overall a very nice copy. 41cm x 32cm. .

L'un des 50 exemplaires numérotés imprimés sur papier japonais, comprenant les épreuves (sous forme de suite supplémentaire) des 29 gravures de Bernard Naudin (sur un tirage total de 351 exemplaires). Reliure intégrale en maroquin brun, avec titres dorés sur des étiquettes en cuir brun foncé. La reliure est impeccable. Pages de garde marbrées. Des couvertures souples lilas, impeccables et propres, portant le titre gaufré et doré, sont reliées à l'avant et à l'arrière. En face de la page de titre se trouve l'illustration de frontispice représentant un chérubin, avec le numéro de cet exemplaire (n° 42/50) imprimé en rouge. Le livre est propre et soigné de bout en bout. Les deux états des illustrations sont en excellent état. Magnifiquement illustré par Naudin. One of 50 numbered copies printed on Japan paper, including proofs (as an additional suite) of the 29 etchings by Bernard Naudin (from a total limitation of 351). Full brown morocco binding, with gilt titles to dark brown leather labels. Binding is immaculate. Marbled end papers. Perfect clean lilac soft covers with embossed gilt title are bound in to the front and rear. Opposite the title page is the frontis illustration of a cherub, with the number of this copy (#42/50) printed in red. The book is clean and tidy throughout. The two states of the illustrations are in excellent condition. Beautifully illustrated by Naudin. Inside there is occasional foxing, mainly to the end papers. Second edition, actually a Dutch counterfeit (original ed.: Geneva, Cramer, 1770-1772) of this little-known work by Voltaire, later merged - not to say swallowed up - in the editions of his "Dictionnaire philosophique". A particular feature of this edition is that it includes "Notes" defending Jean-Jacques Rousseau where Voltaire most violently attacks him. An interesting compendium of Voltaire's ideas on history, art, literature and religion, in a wide variety of tones, from jokes to complex dissertations, shedding new light on subjects such as justice, humanity and tolerance... Elle est allongée sur le côté et capturée en vue arrière. Sous verre, dans un cadre en bois doré avec une monture crème. L'image mesure 130 mm x 270 mm. Taille totale (dans le cadre) 250 x 395 mm. Jean-Auguste Vyboud (1872-1944) est un peintre et graveur formé par Gustave Moreau et François Flameng.

Beautiful signed female nude sanguine copper etching on heavy weight paper, with artist's signature in pencil to the lower right corner. The subject a graceful reclining female nude. She is lying on her side and captured from a rear view. Under glass, in a gilt wood frame with a cream mount. Image measures 130 mm x 270 mm. Total size (in frame) 250 x 395 mm (9Ÿ x 15œ inches). Jean-Auguste Vyboud (1872-1944) was a painter and engraver who studied under Gustave Moreau and François Flameng.

WAKE, William & CLAGETT, William.

Pamphlet. A contemporary account / bibliography of the tracts and pamphlets published by both sides. Most of these were anonymous, and there are marginalia which name the author in most cases in a contemporary hand. Title, text, errata. The errata has been crossed out, and the corrections listed have been made by hand in the text. Clagett was particularly close friends with his eventual successor at Gray's Inn, William Wake, the future archbishop of Canterbury. Clagett saw through the press Wake's "The present state" while Wake was lying low in Dorchester, leading to its sometimes being erroneously credited to Clagett (including by Wing, who referenced it as C4390). The title leaf is detached and a little grubby. The text shows some light staining in places and has some marginal ink notes, the first few leaves are partially detached at the top, everything else is well bound together. Wake, William (16571737), became Archbishop of Canterbury. He was originally from Blandford Forum in Dorset, and became a convinced Anglican after spending time in France. He wrote many tracts opposing Catholicism. William Clagett (16461688) was an English clergyman and pamphleteer, particularly active during the reign of James II, when he was very anti-catholic. 1-40 pp. Wing C4390.

WARD, Leslie, SPY

na na 1890 Vers 1880. Esquisse au pastel signée de Ward, mieux connu sous le nom de Spy. Le modèle est inconnu. La feuille est légèrement assombrie et froissée, avec une petite déchirure fermée sur le bord droit. Le dos de la feuille est assez assombri et rongé sur les côtés supérieur et droit, et présente une déchirure fermée sur le bord droit (maintenant réparée). Il s'agit toujours d'un portrait attrayant. Les esquisses originales de Spy sont peu courantes, mais plusieurs autres qui ne montrent que des têtes de profil ont été vendues aux enchères. Épreuve : 29 cm x 18 cm. Feuille : 40cm x 30cm. Leslie Ward (1851-1922), plus connu sous le nom de SPY, était un caricaturiste britannique. Pendant quatre décennies, il a peint 1 325 portraits qui ont été régulièrement publiés par Vanity Fair. En dehors de ces portraits, ses esquisses et ses portraits originaux au pastel ou au crayon étaient souvent d'un style différent (comme c'est le cas de cette uvre), tout en conservant son talent et son humour.

Circa 1880. A signed pastel sketch by Ward, better known as Spy. The sitter is unknown. The sheet has a little darkening and creasing, and with a small closed tear to the right edge. Backing board is quite darkened and foxed to the top and right sides, and has a closed tear to the right edge (now repaired). Still an attractive portrait. Original sketches by Spy are uncommon, but several others which show only heads in profile have appeared at auction. Print: 29cm x 18cm. Sheet: 40cm x 30cm. Leslie Ward (1851-1922), was better known as SPY was a British caricaturist. Over four decades painted 1,325 portraits which were regularly published by Vanity Fair. Outside of these, his sketches and original pastel / pencil portraits were often in a different style (as this work is) yet retaining his skill and humour. .
