Martin & Walter 22175 & 22176 (listed under Luchet); Tourneux, iv, 20635b and 20636 and 20749. Second issue of the first edition. The first volume is a 'reimpression', as Tourneux notes, but also the second volume is different and this is apparently unrecorded: this second volume has, after the title-page the 'Avis de l'Éditeur', the 'Introduction' (together covering the pages 3-18), whereas other copies of the second volume of the first work have, after the title-page, the Avis de l'Éditeur, an errata-leaf, and the introduction. Also the signatures and pagination are different. The errata-leaf is absent in this issue and the errata are corrected. These volumes have been attributed to De Luchet, Rivarol, Mirabeau, Choderlos de Laclos and Cérutti and Senac de Meilhan, either separately or in collaboration. 'C'est l'ouvrage d'un homme de talent et d'esprit' (Tourneux).This is a collection of satirical biographical sketches of the members of the French Parliament in Paris (States General; États-Généraux) during the first year of the French Revolution: among those described in these volumes are Necker, Mirabeau, the Marquis de la Fayette, the Comte de Montmorin, the Duc de Luxembourg, the Vicomte de Noailles, Clavière, Beaumarchais, Bergasse, Condorcet, Abbé Grégoire, Brissot de Warville, and many others. Most are described in a satirical way, except for a few, including Mirabeau, under a fictitious name. The 'Galerie' was published anonymously and obviously caused turmoil.Although many names have been put forward as possible authors, the most likely candidate is Mirabeau as he is one of the very few who is described favorably. Each volume contains at the end a leaf giving the keys to the fictious names used in the biographical and satirical essays. In the third volume the female characters are being dealt with: Madame Necker, Madame de Stael, Princesse de Beauveau, Comtesse de Sabran, Comtesse Diane de Polignac, comtesse du Barry, etc. etc. This volume with a faint stain in the blank lower margin.

A Londres, Aux dépens d'une Société de Libraires, 1757 (Paris, EDHIS, 1976). 2 volumes in 1. vi, (2), 158, (4) pp.; 138 pp. 8vo. Bound. Hartig 55 (1756 as date); not in Negley; not in Trousson. Reprint of this very rare work, limited to an edition of 150 numbered copies and 30 copies not destined for the trade. The only utopian work of the time based on religious sentiments and the bible. No difference between the races; all men are brothers. This text, a supposed translation, remained practically unnoticed: only van Wijngaarden in his 'Les Odyssées philosophiques' devoted a longer study to this important text.

Numbers 1-53 (30 novembre 1853-29 novembre 1854); numbers 1-53 (6 decembre 1854-28 decembre 1855); numbers 107-132 (1 mars 1856-28 aout 1856). The two supplements are to be found after number 45 of the first series and is entitled 'Discours de Victor Hugo prononcé le 27 septembre 1854 sur la tombe du Citoyen Felix Bony, proscrit français, mort a Jersey', the second is to be found after number one of the second series and is entitled 'Discours de Louis Kossuth.' Very well executed reproduction on good paper of the complete text of this famous international journal in a limited edition of 150 copies. The journal was severely prosecuted at the time throughout Europe. The editors were Victor Hugo, Louis Blanc, Felix Pyat, Pierre Leroux, Ledru-Rollin, Victor Schoelcher for the French, Alexander Herzen for the Russians, Dombrowski, Oborski, Zeno Swietoslawski and Worcel for the Polish, Louis Kossuth and Sandor Teleki for the Hungarians, Mazzini, Mazzolini, Aurelio Saffi for the Italians, W.W. Linton and G. Julian Harney for the English, Geurz for the Germans, and other famous collaborators such as Barbès, Jeanne Deroin, Constantin Pecqueur, etc.L'Homme was the first international journal and prosecuted in all European countries, it was created at the moment that almost all democratic and socialist journals had dissappeared in continental Europe. It is an indispensable source for the revolutionary and socialist movements in the 19th century, linking the 1848 revolution to the birth of the Workers' International in 1864, the revolution of September 1870, and the Commune of Paris.

Proposes to have 3 million family heads likely to pay tax assessed for one single tax only reaching from 5 to 750 livres, which would bring 724 millions. All other taxes could then be suppressed.

Contemporary speckled calf, spine gilt in compartments, label with gilt lettering, unidentified gilt stamped coat-of-arms in the center of both sides, a few tiny holes in spine, lightly shaved. First work: Conlon 87:566. First edition. - Leaves Aiii-Avii loose, first work partially with a small stain in the upper blank margin. The front blank has been removed, the half-title carries the manuscript note 'reliés ensemble sous ce titre.' Both works deal with the history of previous called assemblees.

The projected prize did not bring in works of suffficient quality, it was decided to split the prize in two and have new subjects, one of which deals with the influence and importance of Fermat, the great scientist from Toulouse, his contributions to 'la haute Géometrie & du Calcul', the other subject being the question of water supply to the city of Toulouse.

Deals with the meeting of the Assemblée des Notables and the plans to put the national finances in order.Recapitulates the measures to be taken ('en abolissant les privilèges du Clergé, qui jusqu'ici, par une magie inconcevable, avoit trouvé le secret de posseder les bénéfices, les places, les récompenses & les dignités de toute espece, de jouir de tous les avantages de la Société, sans presque contribuer en rien aux charges de l'Etat'), but most importantly deals with the question of 'la liberté absolue accordée au commerce des grains.'

On French government finances and especially the taxes on the eve of the revolution. The author also sharply rejects the privileges of the clergy, the class that does not pay taxes, has accumulated an enormous wealth and is yet again exempted from paying taxes. The nobility also has priviliges but the author intelligently observes that the nobility is used to sacrifice and serving the state in various capacities, and, contrary to the clergy, it's position in the state is closely tied to the state itself, in other words, a collapse of the state will have immediate impact on the nobility and their status. It discusses the position of Calonne and the possibilities of reform and the various forms of opposition any reform will provoke from various groups.

Paris, les marchands de nouveautés, 1826. 27, (1) pp. 32mo. Modern boards, original covers preserved, outer margin of front cover repaired. Satirical pamphlet against the newly established 'droit d'aînesse', signed at end 'Cadet'. In feudal times the eldest male heir was entitled to the largest part of the inheritance to the disadvantage of the younger male heirs and the female heirs. In 1826 the restauration government tried to re-establish the feudal 'droit d'aînesse': deals furthermore with the freedom of the press and the liberty (or absence thereof) to discuss the topic.
