Paris, Hachette, 1892. xvi, 352 pp. 8vo. Sewn, original printed covers, uncut. Du Peloux 76. Original edition. Etienne-François de Choiseul (1719-1785), French statesman. He gained the protection of Madame de Pompadour and was given the appointment of ambassador to Rome in 1753, where he was entrusted with the negociations concerning the disturbances called forth by the bull Unigenitus. He acquitted himself skilfully in his task and in 1757 he was transferred to Vienna, where he was instructed to cement the new alliance between France and Austria. His succes in this mission opened the way to even higher offices and in 1758 he became minister of foreign affairs and directed French foreign policy during the Seven Years' War. He continued to control the policy of France untill 1770, holding most of the other important offices of state in that period. Coming to power in the midst of the demoralization consequent upon the defeats of Rossbach and Crefeld, by boldness and energy he reformed and strengthened both army and navy, and although too late to prevent the loss of Canada and India, he developed French colonies in the Antilles and San Domingo, and added Corsica and Lorraine to the crown of France. His management of home affairs in general satisfied the philosophes, he allowed the Encyclopédie to be published, and brought about the banishment of the Jesuits and temporary abolition of the order by Pope Clement IV.

The French translator, J.P. de Gua de Malves, added extensive comments and therefore this French version is sought after. Sir Matthew Decker, director of the East India Company, merchant and pamphleteer, was born in Amsterdam. In the present work he urges the replacement of all customs and excise duties by a single tax on the consumption of luxury goods - a kind of income tax with the merits, as it was conceived in the eighteenth century, that the taxpayer voluntarily assesses himself by choosing to consume such articles and to such an extent as he wishes. Decker argues strongly against restrictions on trade, emphasizing the significance of industry and trade to the welfare of the country. He would exempt the houses inhabited by the poor from all duties - not on grounds of social sympathy but because it would necessarily lower their wages and consequently increase the competitive strength of British exports; he advocates the luxury tax because it would check luxury, the bane of virtue and industry. He was opposed to monopolies and bounties and was skeptical as to whether trade can ultimately be forced into 'an unnatural channel,' thus anticipating the discussion on the operation of natural laws in the economic world. In some respects he is considered an important precursor of Adam Smith. 'The first part of the work is devoted to a detailed criticism of the fiscal difficulties under which England is labouring; the second part to showing the intricate connection between the trade of a country and the value of the land; while in the third part Decker displays the great sources of wealth and prosperity possessed by England (and over her two chief rivals, France and Holland), and shows how the references he suggests would permit her to avail herself of these, her natural strength' (Palgrave, i, p. 519).

Fifth, best and most complete editon of this work which forced the author into exile while his property was confiscated.Jean Baptiste Claude Isouard, writing as Delisle de Sales, published in 1766 his De la Philosophie de la Nature which caused a scandal for professing atheism and nihilism. The work was condamned to be burned, the author imprisoned and the censor exiled. Delisle filed for appeal and was supported by the whole circle of the philosophes who saw in him the champion of the liberty of thought and expression. The trial became a "cause célébre" in Europe: instead of an attack on the philosophes in general, which was the hidden agenda of the magistrates and Jansenists, the reading public appeared sympathetic to the ideas of the philosophes and turned Delisle's book into one of the greatest bestsellers of the century and made him an international celebrity. The magistrates and Parlement became the source of ridicule and outcry: swallowing the bitter pill, Parlement suspended Delisle's banishment and granted amnesty in 1777. The first edition of only three volumes was published in 1766 and it took the authorities some time to discover that the book was "matérialiste" and "spinoziste".

Adam Dickson is best known for his Husbandry of the Ancients of which this is the first French translation, derived from the Scriptores rei rusticae and other writers, and compared with the modern system. Palgrave mentions that his practical knowledge enabled him to clear up many difficulties but 'his scholarship was imperfect.''A good classical scholar, and an excellent practical farmer' (McDonald, Agricultural Writers, p. 211.) Fussell, in his More Old English Farming Books, writes that none of Dickson's publications was so important as the present work.

Champion, Jesuit, who had started having a life of Palafox printed, but the impression was stopped. Dinouart says in his preface he was happy in being able to procure the entire mansucript of Champion which enabled him to complete the life of the celebrated bishop (Sabin).Juan de Palafox y Mendoza (June 26, 1600 - October 1, 1659), a Spanish politician, administrator, and Catholic clergyman in 17th century Spain and viceregal Mexico. Palafox was the Bishop of Puebla (1640-1655), and the interim Archbishop of Mexico (1640-1642). He also held political office, from June 10, 1642 to November 23, 1642 as the Viceroy of New Spain. He lost a high-profile struggle with the Jesuits in New Spain, resulting in a recall to Spain, to the minor Diocese of Osma in Old Castile. In 1639 Philip IV nominated him, and Pope Urban VIII appointed him, as Bishop of Puebla de los Ángeles in viceroyal Mexico. Puebla de los Ángeles was the second largest city in the Viceroyalty of New Spain (viceroyal México) then, and is the present day City of Puebla. He was consecrated at Madrid on December 27, 1639. As bishop, Palafox arrived in Veracruz on June 24, 1640. He was in the company of the new Viceroy of New Spain, Diego López Pacheco, 7th Duke of Escalona, whom he had gotten to know during the voyage. That same ship brought an Irishman, William Lamport, known in New Spain as Don Guillén de Lombardo y Guzmán, who played a role in political turmoil during the 1640s. Palafox was also named Visitador (royal inspector, representative of the king), to investigate the two previous viceroys.Palafox founded the Biblioteca Palafoxiana on September 5, 1646, stocking it with five thousand books of science and philosophy. He also founded the Dominican Convent of Santa Inés, the Colleges of San Pedro and San Pablo, and the girls school Purísima Concepción. He amended the by-laws of the seminary of San Juan, and worked diligently on completing the cathedral, which was dedicated April 18, 1649. As bishop, Palafox y Mendoza distinguished himself by his efforts to protect the Native Americans, forbidding any methods of conversion other than persuasion. - Small stamp on page v: Toulouse 1777, and a scribbled name . A good copy.

The work reviews the administrative division of the kingdom, its fairs and postal services and contains a "Table alphabétique des meilleures cartes gégraphiques des Provinces" which constitutes a very useful cartographic bibliography.

Droz (1773-1850), elected member of the Académie Française in 1813, was appointed one of the first members of the illustre 'Academie des sciences morales et politiques' when it was reopened in 1833. His main field of interest was moral theory but his Économie politique ou principes de la science des richesses proved to be of great service to the science of political economy being a very lucid and 'élégant exposé général des notions fondamentales' (Coquelin & Guillaumin, i, p. 619). - Rare, faint waterstain on lower half of the pages.

A scathing attack on Ferrier in which Du Bois-Aymé deals with the four parts which constitute the work by Ferrier: sur les richesses des peuples - sur l'argent - sur le commerce - le systême commercial. The work is also an early French attempt to express economic relations in mathematical terms. In his discussion of Ferrier's book Du Bois develops mathematical formulae for the relation of power between two countries (the number of inhabitants, the value of goods absolutely necessary to each inhabitant, and the total value of goods in the two countries respectively), the relation between the salary of the unskilled worker and that of the skilled worker, and he develops a number of mathematical formulae in his discussion of 'value' (pp. 102-103): these are important and widely overlooked contributions. The work forms a condensed history of France upto the reign of Louis XI, deals with the authority of the Kings, forms of government, laws and legal system, administrative and religious structure of the Kingdom of France and enumerates the various responsabilities of the officers of France. The work is an important vade-mecum for the history and institutions of France upto and including the Renaissance.The lvs 145-165 contain the 'Sommaire des comtes et ducs d'Aniou depuis Geoffroy Grisegonnelle iusques à Monseigneur Henry fils & frère de Rois de France, & Duc d'Anjou, de Bourbonnois & d'Auvergne' by the same author, with a separate title.The work is dedicated to the duc d'Anjou and the author came under the duc's protection and became his secretary of finances, Charles IX and Henry III (to whom the third edition of 1580 was dedicated) appointed him to the position of historian in charge of assembling and editing the 'annales nationales'. - With handwritten ex-libris "Bibliotheque de Genetiner".

Du Villard de Durand, born in Geneva of an ancient French Huguenot family, was head of the statistical department of population in the office of the French ministry of the Interior. His treatise on the theory of loans repayable by constant or variable annuities was published under the auspices of the 'Académie Royale des Sciences' in Paris, with a preface by Condorcet recommanding it. In this work one also finds a demographic analysis to determine the appropriate rate on a loan which the borrower undertakes te repay in equal instalments over his lifetime.'He attempts to measure the desirability of an investment by using the expected rate of return. He also shows how one may find the period for which a given investment may give the maximum rate of return' (R.D. Theocharis, Early Developments in Mathematical Economics, p. 85). - With a name and a number in an old hand written on half-title. Rare and an important contribution to the history of mathematical economics.

As a matter of fact there never was an English edition, but the author apparently preferred to pass it off as such to avoid problems with the authorities, since he represented the French court as an ambassador in The Hague. Anti-British work that surveys British trade and commerce in Europe and that with the American colonies and the Indies predicting that the Navigation Acts will result in revolt and independence for the British North American colonies. "Sets out the advantages and disadvantages of the Spanish War of Succession to Great Britain's commercial interests, together with the advantages to Spain of free trade in her colonies. This work is remarkable as containing a distinct prophecy of the revolt of the American colonies from Great Britain" (Encyclopaedia Britannica Online).
