Dubuat-Nançay (1732-1787), diplomat and historian is seen as one of Cantillon's disciples because of his emphasis upon the standard of living and his treatment of luxury. He differed from Cantillon, however, both in his general philosophy and in his analysis of social problems. Thus he believed that the ruin of France could be averted only through the restoration of a feudal regime. In his emphasis upon agriculture he resembled Sully and the agrarians; in his notion of a providential natural order and of the net productivity of agriculture, the physiocrats. Unlike Cantillon, Dubuat-Nançay was a populationist in that he explicitly favored, with some qualification, as large a population as could be supported in life and health on a given territory. Second edition, first published in 1739. The Jansenist theory of power, placed on the Index on May 22, 1745. The work was composed towards 1699, but published for the first time in 1739. It was highly praised by Saint-Simon and d'Argenson. 'L'originalité du système de Duguet est double. Non seulement il n'évoque même pas le problème de l'acceptation ou du refus de monde, mais il pose comme prémisse à toute considération politique la possibilité d'un ordre chrétien, dont le prince est tenu d'offrir les conditions à ses sujets. Dupin, François-Pierre-Charles (1784-1873), engineer, mathematician, politician, peer of France, and senator of the Second Empire. He was appointed a representative of the people after the revolution of 1848, and Napoleon III made him senator. Although Dupin began in 1827 a ten-year career as a deputy and a forty-three-year career in French political life he continued to publish throughout the 1830s and 1840s a large number of important books, most of them dealing with economic questions, the condition of the working class, and colonial affairs.

'Travail ou sont étudiés les principes fiscaux et l'ensemble de la situation financière ..... On y trouve un exposé intéressant du Fonctionnement de l'ancienne gabelle' (Stourm). "It was not so much his physiocratic doctrine as his general grasp of macroeconomics that led Du Pont to take a strong stand against the Revolutionary government's growing resort to the issuance of paper money. In March 1790 he prepared a report (this work) for the Committee on Finance, which warned against the Assembly's resort to financing revolution through the use of paper money. An an alternative to printing money Du Pont recommended that the government reduce a proportion of its increases in spending on new prpgrams and that it temporarily retain, though at a reduced rate, the taxes on salt, bouillon, and furs, which it was about to abolish. If any deficit remained in the government's budget after these actions, it was to be made up by a surcharge on all other remaining taxes" (James J. McLain, The Economic Writings of Du Pont de Nemours, p. 148).

Very interesting for the medieval history, giving details on money and extensive information on prices for various commodities, including cornprices, for the period 1202-1746. The Physiocrats used his work often and abundently for statistical details: 'Dupré de Saint Maur, leur guide habituel en matière de statistique .....' (Weulersse, ii, p. 622.)'This work would, perhaps, have been more properly placed along with works on prices. It is full of elaborate researches with respect to the value of money at different periods; and contains tables exhibiting the successive variations in the quantity of silver in the coins, and the prices of a great variety of commodities from the early part of the 13th down to near the middle of the 18th century. Dr. Smith has borne testimony to "the diligence and fidelity" with which M. de Saint Maur has formed his table of prices' (McCulloch, p. 188).

First edition of a study on the relationship between the value of coinage, citing numerous sources, grain prices and other vital commodities. The avertissement compares various European currencies and attempts to establish their real value by referring to workers' and soldiers' wages and assessing their purchase powers, while the introduction proposes a way of determining a fair price for wheat. The author's approach is predominantly historical (the title refers to a 794 edict which fixed the price of grain), providing a wide variety of statistical information. - Title-page and a few pages very lightly spotted.

First edition of this defense of the immunity of the clergy in France: the author maintains that the church does not need to give information about its revenues, nor that it should be oblidged to contribute to the state's revenues. 'Réfutation d'un auteur anonyme; le clergé n'est aucunement obligé de donner des déclarations exactes de ses revenus ni de contribuer aux charges d'État. L'immunité des biens d'Église est fondée sur les maximes les plus inébranlables de la religion et de l'État' (INED). Contains 5 letters in all (INED cites 3 letters).The "Lettres contre l'immunité des biens ecclésiastiques '' is known as 'Lettres Ne Repugnate vestro bono .....' and was written by Daniel Bargeton: the book was suppressed in 1751.Bound in are the following texts: LETTRE d'un imprimeur de Londres aux défenseurs du Clergé de France, au sujet de la Réponse aux lettres contre l'immunité des biens ecclésiastiques. The first mentioned work has been bound between the third and the fourth letter of the main work. - With partially removed bookplate on front paste-down.

Dureau de la Malle (1777-1857), succesful author of numerous literary works, monographs, and studies, mainly on classical antiquity, in which field of interest he also published a number of studies on political economy. ' ..... l'oeuvre de Dureau de la Malle garde presque intact, au bout de cinquante ans, tout son mérite et sa valeur' (Say & Chailley, Dictionnaire de l'Économie politique).

First edition of this scarce book which, although suggesting to be an account of a voyage to South America, is actually a work of fiction. Durret himself claims that it was based on an account by the "Sieur Bachelier" to which he only added notes and of which improved the style. This however is not correct, the work is by Durret. "Chapter 17 of the first part and chapter 19 contain descriptions of Santa Catharina and Brazil in general. The letter is signed "Durret," but the account is by Bachelier, a surgeon. Father Labat believes this was an imaginary voyage" (Borba de Moreas, i, p. 281)."Récit, selon Barbier, plein de bévues et de contradictions, car D. l'aurait fait sans sortir de chez lui. At head of first page: Au nom de la République française.These elections, following the Coup of 18 Fructidor year V (4 September 1797), resulted in a majority of former Jacobins and provoked the Coup of 22 Floréal year VI (11 May 1798). A major part of the elections were declared invalid and, although the candidates of the government were in the minority, they were declared elected.

Third and last edition (first published in 1644) of this collection of amorous, moralizing, and dramatic poetry.The first print in this work, (on page 11), has been attributed to Rembrandt for a long time, but consensus now attributes the print to Ferdinand Bol. Not only of great artistic value because of the fine plates, but also of great literary interest. Some of the plates are by G. Donck after A. van de Venne. There are 43 copperplates of emblematical interest depicting everyday life in the seventeenth century.Van de Venne began working as a book illustrator, print designer, political propagandist, and poet, collaborating with his brother Jan, a well-known publisher and art dealer. Holland's leading writers employed Van de Venne, whose illustrations contributed greatly to the popularity of Dutch emblem books, which combined pictures and prose to present a moral lesson. After moving to The Hague and joining the Guild of Saint Luke in 1625, Van de Venne was probably employed at court. In 1640 he became the guild's dean. He continued his book and printmaking projects and painted most of his well-known grisaille paintings, many depicting the destitute and maimed. A real master-piece of the Dutch Golden Age. - Quire I in last part slightly misbound.

This work by Émérigon (1716-1784) was considered at the time 'un oracle presque toujours sûr en matière d'assurance et cité devant les tribuneaux comme une autorité qui fait pour ainsi dire loi' (Dictionnaire de Biographie Française XII, 1241) Deals not only with the subject mentioned in the title, but covers the whole of maritime law. (i.e. chapter 6: du navire; chapter xii: des risques maritimes; vol. 2, chapter iii: Du change maritime etc.) 'Le Traité des assurances n'est pas borné à la seule matière qu'indique son titre. Il embrasse la presque totalité du droit maritime, et ne saurait être trop recommandé à ceux qui s'occupent de cette importante partie de la législation' (Camus).The author acquired during his long career an immense knowledge about the subjects concerned here, and in fact supplied much very important material to Valin for his important work on the ordinance of 1681.'The author of this work, an advocate in the parliament of Aix and a councillor in the admiralty court of Marseilles, died in 1784 ... He had by long practice and study acquired a very extensive and profound knowledge of maritime and commercial law. This treatise is of the highest authority. It is said by Lord Tenterden, in the preface to his work on maritime law, to be "peculiarly valuable for its extent of learned research, and the numerous and apt citations of the texts of the civil law and of the marine ordinances, the opinions of former writers, and the adjudications of the courts of justice of his own country, which are to be found in every part of it' (McCulloch). - 95 leaves (including the front blank and final blank) of volume one with a stain in the outer margin. This work provoked prosecution on the grounds of 'immorality' of the saint-simonian family and of Enfantin, Chevalier and Barrault personally. Original edition of this rather scarce work. Honoré Fabri (Honoratus Fabrius; 15 April 1608 - 8 March 1688) was a French Jesuit theologian, mathematician, physicist and controversialist.He entered the Society of Jesus at Avignon, in 1626. For eight years he taught philosophy and for six years mathematics at the Jesuit college at Lyons, attracting many pupils. Called to Rome, he became the theologian of the court of the papal penitentiary in theVatican basilica, a position he held for thirty years. He was considered the first expert on Jansenism.Fabri was a highly respected scientist among his contemporaries. He was elected to the Accademia del Cimento in 1657, the year the Academy was founded, he became a life-long friend of Gassendi, with whom he had a long-lasting correspondence, Leibniz placed him with Galileo, Torricelli, Steno and Borelli for his work on elasticity and the theory of vibrations, and alone with Galileo for his efforts to 'rationalise experimental kinematics'. Mersenne rated him 'a veritable giant in science.' Fabri was the first of many famous professors produced by the Collège de la Trinité: his students included Pierre Mousnier, the mathematician François de Reynaud, Jean-Dominique Cassini; and Philippe de la Hire.Wendrockii and Irenæi are pseudonyms of P. Nicole, Montaltii is B. Pascal, Stubrockio is a pseudonym for Honoré Fabri. This work is a refutation of Pierre Nicole's Latin translation of Pascal's Lettres Provinciales, which had appeared in the previous year, 1658.- With bookplate on the front paste-down and a stamp on title, in the blank margin.
