BRANGWYN, Frank Willam

N/A N/A 1911 Gravure d'une scène montrant des personnes se réunissant pour marchander ou faire du commerce. L'eau-forte n'est pas signée et semble être une uvre rare. Non datée mais vers 1911. Gravure Passepartout sous la crème de 23 cm x 29,5 cm. Passepartout mesure 385 x 430 mm (15Œ x 17 pouces). La gravure est en très bon état. Passepartout a une petite marque sur un côté et est légèrement assombri. Le nom de l'artiste a été écrit à la base (et mal orthographié Brangwin). Sir Frank William Brangwyn (1867 - 1956) était un peintre, graveur et illustrateur anglo-gallois. Bien que né en Belgique, sa famille est retournée au Pays de Galles en 1875 où il a reçu son éducation artistique, d'abord avec son père, puis avec le célèbre artiste William Morris. La relation de Brangwyn avec l'un de ses admirateurs et partisans, le poète belge Emile Verhaeren, lui vaut d'être chargé de créer de nombreuses illustrations pour le recueil de poèmes de Verhaeren, Les Villes Tentaculaires.

Etching of a scene showing people gathering to haggle or trade. The etching is unsigned, and appears to be a scarce work. Undated but circa 1911. Under cream Passepartout Engraving sized 23 cm x 29.5cm. Passepartout is sized 385 by 430mm (15Πby 17 inches). Print is in very good, clean condition. Passepartout has a small mark to one side, and is slightly darkened. The artists name has been written to base (and misspelt Brangwin). Sir Frank William Brangwyn (1867 - 1956) was an Anglo-Welsh painter, engraver and illustrator. Although born in Belgium, his family returned to Wales in 1875 where he received his artistic education, first with his father and then with renowned artist William Morris. Brangwyn's relationship with one of his admirers and supporters, the Belgian poet Emile Verhaeren, led to his being commissioned to create multiple illustrations for Verhaeren's poetry book, Les Villes Tentaculaires .

First Edition of this promotional publication created for Quina-Laroche. Handsome copy. Full cardboard portfolio with smooth spine, illustrated front cover, chemise complete with its two ties. Work complete with its 10 colour lithographs depicting actresses praising the benefits of Quina-Laroche. This was a quinquina based tonic (containing quinine), marketed in Belle Époque France as a fortifying and invigorating drink, similar to other "vin quiné" or hygienic tonics of the period. Today the name is best known from high quality advertising pieces: illustrated booklets, brochures, and small albums featuring portraits of Parisian actresses and café concert stars. 16cm x 18cm. 18 pages + 10 lithographs in glassine cover.

Binding is firm and holding well, although slightly shaken to the front board. Blue marbled end papers. Half title, title. The first few pages are significantly foxed. There is then light to moderate foxing throughout the book. Owner's date to half title. Notes in ink (from 1976) written to the rear end paper, and some margins. A few stains and marks to the work. Bruxelles Éditions des artistes 1944 Très bel exemplaire de cette première édition limitée à 26 exemplaires, enrichie d'une illustration aquarelle originale signée d'Ivanovsky. Le tirage complet a été de 330 exemplaires, dont 300 sur vélin pur fil, et seulement 26 sur papier madagascar, avec l'illustration originale. Boîte d'origine en carton rigide crème. Il est un peu assombri et présente quelques marques, mais il est encore en bon état et a bien protégé l'ouvrage qu'il contient. Couvertures crème souple avec titres illustrés sur la couverture avant. Imprimé en noir et rouge. À l'intérieur se trouve un livret d'introduction de Paul Fierens, qui reprend le titre de la couverture. La justification porte le numéro écrit à la main. Viennent ensuite les 26 pages, avec les lettres de A à Z, chacune illustrée par une femme coloriée à la main, et un vers sous chacune d'elles. Au dos, dans une pliure, se trouve l'illustration originale. Dans ce cas, pour la lettre C, "Carabosse". L'ouvrage est signé au crayon par Ivanovsky. Il y a quelques frottements à la surface du papier sur le bord droit, où il semble que cette peinture ait été encadrée à un moment donné. Cela n'affecte pas l'image. Dans l'ensemble, il s'agit d'un bel exemple d'une uvre rare. A beautiful copy of this limited first edition, one of only 26 copies, enhanced with a signed original water colour illustration by Ivanovsky. The complete printing was 330 copies, with 300 on vélin pur fil, and only 26 on madagascar paper, with the original illustration. Original plain cream stiff card box. This is a little darkened and with some marks, but is still substantially sound and has done it's job of protecting the work within. Soft cream covers with illustrated titles to the front cover. Printed in black and red. Inside, there is an introductory booklet by Paul Fierens, which repeats the cover as a title. The justification has the number hand written to it. Then are the 26 pages, with letters A-Z, each illustrated with a woman hand coloured, and a verse beneath each. To the rear, in a fold, is the original illustration. In this case for the letter C, "Carabosse." This is signed in pencil by Ivanovsky. There is some rubbing to the paper surface to the right edge, where it looks as if this painting has been framed at some point. Not affecting image. Overall a beautiful example of a scarce work. We can find none of this work available to purchase at the time of cataloguing, and there are no auction records for the 26 with the original illustration. London The Illustrated London News 1876

A bound collection of issues of The Illustrated London Almanack. This was published annually by The Illustrated London News from 1845 to 1895. The full title states that this "contains astronomical diagrams of remarkable phenomena, printed in tints, under the superintendence of James Breen. Ferns and Butterflies of the months, printed in colours by Leighton Brothers with descriptive letterpress by Mrs Lankester, fine art engravings, original designs heading the calendar and a variety of useful information." The illustrations show the Victorian obsession with the rural idyll. Half brown leather, with gilt decoration and titles. Brown buckram boards. Boards are a little faded and rubbed, but still attractive. Marbled end papers. Internally in good, if slightly darkened condition. Pagination is: 1865, 58 pages; 1866, 54 pages; All volumes from 1867 to 1874 have 56 pages in each; 1875, 48 pages, 1876, 48 pages. Each year is complete - apart from 1876, which has five of the six colour plates called for. 1866 has 4 colour plates (but it does not state how many it should have). There are a total of 69 full colour chromolithographs, and the rest b/w. Subjects include court circulars, information about government expenditure, Army & Navy movements, notable deaths and happenings in London &c. 280 mm x 210 mm (11 x 8Πinches).

Paris Éditions du Moustié 1947 Première édition. Dossier souple rose pâle contenant 24 lithographies couleur pleine page tirées du livre, ainsi que 7 autres dans différents états. Certaines illustrations sont légèrement érotiques. Il semble s'agir d'un échantillon/d'un ouvrage promotionnel pour le livre proprement dit, car il s'agit d'une série de 24 illustrations tirées du livre et d'un échantillon de 4 pages présentant la mise en page proposée, etc. Certaines des 7 illustrations à différents stades sont uniquement en noir, d'autres uniquement en bistre, et d'autres encore sans noir ni bistre. Toutes sont imprimées sur un magnifique papier vélin. Très inhabituel ! Le dossier rose présente une certaine décoloration due au soleil et des frottements aux coins, tandis que le contenu reste en bon état, avec seulement quelques légères rousseurs sur certaines pages, qui n'affectent pas les images. 35 pages au total - 31 planches simples, plus un livret de 4 pages. 22,5 x 14,5 cm.

First edition. Pale pink softback folder containing 24 full page colour lithographs from the book - and 7 others in various states. Some of the illustrations are mildly erotic. This appears to be a sample / promotional work for the actual book, as it is a suite of all 24 illustrations from the book and a 4pp. sample of the proposed page layout etc. Some of the 7 in various states are in black only, some in bistre only, and some with either the black or the bistre removed. All of these are on beautiful vélin. Very unusual! The pink folder has some sun fading and rubbing to the corners, whilst the contents remain in good shape with just light foxing to some pages, not affecting the images. 35 pages total - 31 single plates, plus 4pp. booklet. 22.5 x 14.5 cm. ,

Volume 1 only. Half Vellum, top edge gilt, occasional foxing, else a very good copy. The covers are clean and tidy. The is a presentation inscription from the Rev. Benedict Willamson. He was a priest and architect, who designed the church "Our Lady of Perpetual Help" in Fulham, London, which was built in 1922, and the Chapel at St Edmund's College, Cambridge among others. Copac records Trinity College Dublin and Oxford, both with a complete run from 1913 to 1918. (ii), 312 pp.

L'artiste a placé ses uvres dans différentes villes. Il a essayé de se concentrer sur des zones déjà couvertes d'affiches et de panneaux, afin d'ajouter une touche artistique à l'ensemble. Dédicace de Briggs sur la page de garde. 96 pages, remplies de photographies en couleur et en noir et blanc des uvres in situ et dans des galeries. La jaquette et le livre sont en excellent état, sans aucune trace de salissure. 27 cm x 23 cm.

First edition. A signed hardback copy of this photobook. Bilingual edition in French and English. With an essay by Juliet Fleming. The artist placed artworks in different cities. He tried to focus on areas which were already covered in posters and signs, to add art to the ensemble. Inscription by Briggs to the half title page. 96 pages, full of colour and black and white photographs of the pieces in situ, and in galleries. Both dustwrapper and book are in excellent, clean condition. 27cm x 23cm. .

First edition. 16 page pamphlet that appears to have been bound as part of book at some point after publication, and now removed again. In the Preface it says that if the Discourse is well received the author will write more. T. S. Bristow was Minister to the Society of Protestant Dissenters at Knowsley. We can find no others copies online or in libraries - so this is very scarce! 225 x 140 mm (8Ÿ x 5œ inches)

Paris Chez Jean Porson 1947 Très bel exemplaire de cette première édition limitée. Quatre volumes. Cet exemplaire est l'un des 30 exemplaires en rives blanc ou teinté, en quatre volumes, contenant une suite de 147 illustrations lithographiées. La suite de 23 portraits fait l'objet d'un volume séparé, et deux illustrations originales de Masson, à l'encre de Chine et rehaussées de lavis, sont reliées dans le premier volume. Les 12 planches refusées sont également présentées. L'ouvrage est magnifiquement présenté dans une reliure signée Martin-Brés. Chaque volume est revêtu d'un plein cuir brun foncé uniforme, avec des motifs dorés et gaufrés sur les plats et des titres dorés sur les dos. Il y a un peu de frottement sur les bords des dos. A part cela, l'ouvrage est en excellent état, tant à l'intérieur qu'à l'extérieur. Nous ne trouvons pas d'autre exemplaire de cet ouvrage en quatre volumes, avec les illustrations originales. 330 par 260mm.

Also presented are the 12 refused plates. Beautifully presented in a Martin-Brés signed binding. Each volume has a uniform dark brown full leather, with gilt and embossed design to the boards and gilt titles to the spines. There is a touch of rubbing to the ribs and to the edges of the spines. Other than this, in excellent condition inside and out. We cannot find another copy of this work in the four volumes, with the original illustrations. 330 by 260mm (13 by 10Œ inches). 10kg. .

Biographie autorisée du musicien de jazz Cockney, publiée en 1985 pour célébrer le 50e anniversaire de la première apparition sur scène de "Nat Gonella and the Georgians". Paris Hachette 1950 Le premier livre de Babar créé par Laurent de Brunhoff, après la mort de son père. Première édition (mais pas la première). Carton vert, dos noir. Les planches sont un peu bosselées et présentent quelques traces d'usure sur les bords, mais elles sont saines. L'intérieur est propre. La reliure est assez secouée, le livre s'ouvrant facilement à quelques endroits, mais il tient encore. Une réparation a été effectuée à l'aide de ruban adhésif d'archivage sur la page de garde / page de titre. Une inscription de cadeau soignée figure au colophon. L'intérieur est propre et bien rangé, avec des couleurs encore vives. 48 pages. 370 x 270 mm.

Les meurtres ont eu lieu au corps de garde de Maison-Blanche à Paris, pendant la rébellion de juin. Une partie importante de la Révolution française de 1848. Exemplaire propre et soigné, avec un léger assombrissement général. Très bel exemplaire. Une gravure très similaire, basée sur celle-ci, a été utilisée dans les "Journées illustrées de la Révolution de 1848". Publié à Paris : Aux bureaux de l'Illustration, 255 x 340 mm

Lithograph of the dramatic death of the Général de Bréa and his Aide de Camp Mangin at the hands of insurgents from the Fontainebleau barrier. The murders took place at the Maison-Blanche guard house in Paris, during the June Rebellion. An important part of the French Revolution of 1848. This is a clean and tidy copy, with an overall slight darkening. Very nice copy. A very similar engraving, based on this one, was used in "Journées illustrées de la Révolution de 1848". Published Paris: Aux bureaux de l'Illustration, 255 x 340 mm (10 x 13œ inches) .

Nous n'avons trouvé aucun exemplaire de cette édition dans WorldCat ou sur le site de la BnF (bien qu'il y ait une impression 3 ans plus tard). Complet de 12 gravures, chacune comportant deux images. L'intérieur est propre et bien rangé, avec quelques marques et noircissements sur les pages. Une planche est partiellement détachée, mais elle tient bien. Dans l'ensemble, il s'agit d'un bon exemplaire d'un abrégé rare. L'Histoire naturelle de Buffon, formellement intitulée Histoire naturelle, générale et particulière, est une uvre scientifique monumentale du naturaliste français Georges-Louis Leclerc, comte de Buffon (1707-1788). Publiée initialement de 1749 à 1788 (avec des suppléments et d'autres volumes publiés après la mort de Buffon), elle compte parmi les publications les plus influentes du siècle des Lumières dans le domaine des sciences naturelles. 216 pages. 140 x 90 mm (5œ x 3œ pouces).

First edition Thus. The publisher's colophon details year VIII (1799). We can find no copy of this edition on WorldCat or the BnF website (although there is a printing 3 years later). Complete with 12 engravings, each of which has two images. Contemporary (or shortly after) stiff card paper covered boards. Blue paper for boards with orange to the spine and corners. These are both moderately rubbed. short title in ink to the spine. Title with engraved vignette, owner's name alongside vignette. The binding is loose to the casing, and is threatening to split, but is currently holding together. Internally clean and tidy with a little marking and darkening to the pages. One plate is partially detached, but holding firm. Overall a decent copy of a scarce abridgement. Buffon's Natural History, formally titled Histoire naturelle, générale et particulière, is a monumental scientific work by the French naturalist Georges-Louis Leclerc, comte de Buffon (17071788). Published initially from 1749 to 1788 (with supplements and further volumes issued after Buffon's death), it stands among the most influential natural science publications of the Enlightenment era. 216 pages. 140 by 90mm (5œ by 3œ inches). .

BUGET, P.

Caen: Chenel, 1871 Enveloppements bleus originaux, titres décoratifs et écusson aux enveloppes - répliqués sur la page de titre. Quelques pages restent non coupées. Dans l'ensemble en bon état, bien qu'il y ait des taches et quelques marques (humidité ?) sur le bord supérieur des couvertures. Très légères entailles sur les bords de la cape. L'intérieur est généralement propre et bien rangé. L'abbé Buguet était un membre royaliste et traditionaliste de l'église. Il fonda une congrégation pour prier pour les âmes du purgatoire de Montligeon. Il mourut à Rome en 1917.

Original blue wraps, decorative titles and crest to the wraps - replicated to the title page. A couple of pages remain uncut. Overall in good condition, although there is staining and some (damp?) marking to the top edge of the covers. Very slight nicking to the edges of the wrapper. Inside generally clean and tidy throughout. Abbe Buguet was a Royalist, and traditionalist member of the church. He established a congregation to pray for the souls in Purgatory in Montligeon. He died in Rome in 1917.

Trouvé au British Museum Ref J,6.82 : Leurs commentaires : "Strephon et Chloé est un poème scatalogique de Jonathan Swift, publié en 1734. Hockley in the Hole était une zone insalubre connue pour ses appâts pour animaux. Stephens décrit à tort le sujet comme une représentation théâtrale. Good condition. Clean and neat with very slight edgewear. 24cm x 30.5cm. Found in the British Museum Ref J,6.82: Their comments: "Strephon and Chloe was a scatalogical poem by Jonathan Swift, published in 1734. Hockley in the Hole was an unsalubrious area notorious for animal baiting. Stephens mistakenly describes the subject as a stage performance. According to Tim Clayton's unpublished catalogue of Bunbury's prints, the plate was sold by Bretherton 1799, second day, lot 151, 'Two, Strephon and Chloe and Robin Grey', and probably purchased by Fores who reissued it in 1801 (an impression in the Lewis Walpole Library)." .

Stipple print engraving. Conforms to British Museum Satires 6343 - Museum number J,6.58. The engraving shows a porter lifting up both hands to show the impossibility of access to his master. He is addressing a would-be visitor, who faces him with his hat in hand, pointing towards his companion, a young man who stands with one hand is in his pocket, and the other, holding his hat, rests on the head of his cane. Under passe-partout. In excellent condition. 245 x 265 mm (9Ÿ x 10œ inches).

Paris Charles Wittman 1903 Une grande et belle gravure du pape Pie X (Giuseppe Melchiorre Sarto) datant de 1903. Elle est signée sur la gravure "a monsieur Ch Wittmann, cordialement E Burney". Au bas de la feuille, et de la même main (ou d'une main très similaire), est écrit "gravée par Burnay, aprés C Gaillard". Cette mention est problématique. Nous n'avons trouvé aucune copie de cette gravure en ligne, mais Burney et Gaillard ont souvent travaillé ensemble, et Gaillard était le professeur de Burney. MAIS Gaillard est mort en 1887, des années avant l'élévation de Sarto à la papauté. Cette uvre utilise un cadre identique au portrait de Pie IX de Gaillard, qui a fait sa renommée. (évidemment, le panneau du nom a été mis à jour). Nous soupçonnons que Burney rend hommage à son tuteur, dans l'utilisation et la reconnaissance du cadre et du style. La gravure est en très bon état, avec une bonne impression profonde. Il y a un peu de rousseur sur les bords de la feuille, et quelques très petites déchirures sur le bord de la page. François Eugène Burney (1845-1907) était un graveur et illustrateur français. Ferdinand Gaillard (1834-1887). Chrales Wittmann était un imprimeur en taille-douce parisien. Il a souvent travaillé avec Burney, et a probablement été l'imprimeur de cette feuille, que Burney a signée pour lui. Le panneau gravé mesure 49 cm x 34 cm. La feuille mesure 62 cm x 46 cm. Première édition.

A large and attractive engraving of Pope Pius X (Giuseppe Melchiorre Sarto) Circa 1903. It is signed to the engraving "a monsieur Ch Wittmann, cordialement E Burney." To the base of the sheet, and in the same (or very similar) hand is written "gravée par Burnay, aprés C Gaillard." This is problematic. We can find no copies of this engraving online, but Burney and Gaillard often worked together, and Gaillard was Burney's teacher. BUT Gaillard died in 1887, years before the Elevation of Sarto to the Papacy. This work uses an identical frame / surround to Gaillard's portrait of Pius IX, which made his name. (obviouisly the name panel has been updated). We suspect that Burney is paying homage to his tutor, in the use and credit of the frame and style. The engraving is in very good condition, with a good, deep impression. There is a little foxing to the edges of the sheet, and a couple of very small tears to the page edge. Francois Eugéne Burney (1845-1907) was a French engraver and illustrator. Ferdinand Gaillard (1834-1887). Chrales Wittmann was a Parisian Intaglio printer. He often worked with Burney, and presumably was also the printer of this sheet, which Burney has signed for him. Engraved panel is 49cm x 34cm. The sheet is 62cm x 46cm. First Edition. .

Elle est maintenant protégée par une pochette d'archivage. Le livre lui-même est propre et bien rangé, sans marques ou défauts significatifs. Burns est né à Belfast et vit à Londres.
