London Alfred W. Bennett 1864

Small brown embossed boards, with gilt titles to front. Inside, clean and with engraved frontispiece. Always a temperance supporter, during the mid 19th century Elihu Burritt toured New England speaking against war and promoting brotherhood. In 1844 he founded 'The Advocate of Peace' in Worcester, Massachusetts, as the head of a group of radical pacifists. [2], xii, 2-106 pp. 180 x 110 mm (7 x 4Πinches).

First Edition. Original brown cloth with leather label to front board. With engraved title, A little rubbing to the edges, and slight scratching to label. Slight splitting to surface of spine edge. Monogram bookplate to the inside board. Slight weakness to the binding at the title, and darkening to the page edges, but overall a very respectable copy. Portrait of Lady Bury and 6 engraved aquatints (complete). Sadlier 480: "This pious memorial to her husband (he died in 1832) was surely erected at Lady Charlotte's expense. the drawings are of considerable merit and beautifully reproduced. I include the book, despite its poetical character, for the sake of the drawings, and in order that its existence may be known." Having said that, there is a significant list of Royal Subscribers at the beginning of the book. xiv, 140 pages.

Inside publisher's corrugated cardboard slipcase with pictorial title label; this is somewhat darkened and rubbed. There is some wear to the price-clipped dust jacket. The grey cloth boards underneath remain in very good condition. Overall in good condition. Gand [Ghent] Chez de Busscher Fréres 1847 Première édition. Rare exemplaire de cette histoire de la Société royale de Gand. Cet ouvrage est cependant bien plus qu'une histoire, avec 27 belles planches gravées, dont deux lithographies teintées et trois planches dépliantes. Il n'y a pas d'autres exemplaires disponibles au moment du catalogage. L'ouvrage a été réalisé en sarrasin rouge pâle de l'époque, avec un dos en cuir rouge foncé, des bandes en relief, des titres et des décorations dorés. La reliure est un peu frottée et marquée, mais reste très présentable. Papiers de garde marbrés d'origine. Demi-titre attrayant. Il y a une gravure frontispice d'une salle d'exposition qui est un peu roussie mais attrayante. La page de titre est ornée d'une vignette. La préface et les chapitres sont ornés de belles et grandes initiales historiées. Les planches sont sur du papier d'art de haute qualité. First edition. Rare copy of this history of the Royal Society of Ghent. This work is much more than a history though, with 27 beautiful engraved plates, including two tinted lithographs and three folding plates. There are no other copies available at the time of cataloguing. Contemporary pale red buckram with dark red leather spine with raised bands and gilt titles and decoration. The binding is a little rubbed and marked, but still very presentable. Original marbled end papers. Attractive Half title. There is a frontis engraving of a salle d'exposition which is a little foxed but attractive. Title page with vignette illustration. The preface and chapters have beautiful, large historiated initials. The plates are on high quality art paper. Most are in good, clean condition, but some have light foxing to them. In two volumes. Presumably the Irish pirated version of Bentham's Cambridge edition of the same year. Bound in original full calf. With wood-engraved portrait frontispiece (by Vertue after Soest), and 16 fine wood-engraved plates (by Mynde after Hogarth), five of which are folding. Full index at the end of each volume. The first edition to include Zachary Grey's extensive notes. Volume I - xxxvi, 399, [xv] pp. Volume II - 414, [vxiii] pp. The binding has been skillfully restored, with red morocco labels, lettered, numbered and ruled in gilt. Boards are in good condition with only a little rubbing to edges and corners. New end papers. Small pen squiggle to end paper in volume one. Small neat signatures to title pages. Lacks the list of subscribers (often missing) at end of the first volume. The work is directed against religious sectarianism. The first part of Hudibras was written in 1658, and the other two in 1664 and 1678 respectively. Very popular in its time, the poem was sufficiently popular to spawn imitators. One early purchaser of the first two parts was Samuel Pepys. Whilst Pepys acknowledged that the book was the "greatest fashion" he could not see why it was deemed so witty. Hudibras was reprinted many times in the centuries following Butler's death.

BYRON, Lord.

Paris Francois Louis & Baudry. 1821 Première édition. Quatre volumes des uvres de Lord Byron. uvre complète en quatre volumes, telle qu'elle a été initialement publiée par Louis et Baudry en 1821. (Il s'agit de la première publication des uvres de Byron par Baudry). Les éditeurs ont ensuite enrichi cette édition complète au cours des années suivantes (pour atteindre finalement douze volumes en 1824), afin d'y inclure les uvres ultérieures de Byron et, après sa mort, un volume commémoratif contenant la première édition de « Character of Lord Byron » de Walter Scott. Il s'agit d'une des toutes premières uvres associées à Baudry. Né en 1793, il n'obtint son brevet (autorisation de publier) qu'en 1820. Baudry fut l'un des plus importants éditeurs pirates parisiens de littérature anglophone au début du XIXe siècle. Le présent ensemble représente l'édition complète telle qu'elle fut publiée initialement, avant cette extension ultérieure. » La préface au début du premier volume évoque brièvement les scandales et indique que la vicomtesse Wentworth (Lady Byron) et Byron gardent tous deux un « silence digne » sur leur séparation, et que Byron, en « exil volontaire » sur le continent, continue d'écrire, ayant récemment achevé les troisième et quatrième chants de Childe Harold qui « allègent la morosité de l'exilé au cur brisé ». État : Les volumes sont reliés dans une demi-cuir uniforme d'époque, avec des plats marbrés et des étiquettes en cuir portant les titres sur le dos. Numéro de volume en dorure sur le dos. On observe des frottements modérés sur les plats et les bords du dos. Il y a des pertes au niveau de la tête de chaque volume, allant de légers éclats à deux centimètres. Les reliures sont solides, mais les plats commencent tout juste à se détacher. La signature de la propriétaire (Martha Boyse ?) a été biffée sur les pages de garde de certains volumes. Le texte est en bon état, mais présente des rousseurs légères à modérées sur les pages, les plus touchées étant les premières pages de chaque volume. Dans l'ensemble, il s'agit toutefois d'un exemplaire acceptable d'un ensemble rare (ou d'une partie d'ensemble !).

First edition. Four volumes of Lord Byron's works. Complete in four volumes, as originally issued by Louis and Baudry in 1821. (This is the first Baudry publication of Byron's work). The publishers subsequently expanded this collected edition over the following years (eventually to twelve volumes by 1824), to include Byron's later works and, after his death, a memorial volume containing the first edition of Walter Scott's "Character of Lord Byron." This is a very early work to be associated with Baudry. Born in 1793, he didn't receive his brevet (permission to publish) until 1820. Baudry was one of the most significant Parisian pirate-publishers of English-language literature in the early 19th century. The present set represents the edition complete as first published, prior to that later expansion. The memoir to the beginning of volume one brushes over scandals, and writes that the Viscountess Wentworth (Lady Byron) and Byron both keep a "dignified silence" over their separation, and that Byron, in "voluntary exile" on the continent, is continuing to write, having recently completed the third and fourth cantos of Childe Harold which "lightens to gloom of the heart-broken exile." Apparently a fifth volume was published by Louis and Baudry shortly after this set. Baudry then continued to print further volumes alone. The works present here are: Volume one: The Bride of Abydos; The Corsair; Lara; Parisina. Volume two: English Bards and Scotch Reviewers; Don Juan; The Giaour. Volume three: Childe Harold's Pilgrimage; Beppo; Fare thee well etc. Volume four: The siege of Corinth; Manfred; Mazeppa; The Prisoner of Chillon; The Lament of Tasso; Various Poems. Collation: xii, 216. 240, 224, 232. pages. All half titles etc. present. 17cm x 10cm. Condition: The volumes are bound in a uniform contemporary half calf with marbled boards and leather labels with titles to spine. Volume number in gilt to spine. There is moderate rubbing to the boards and spine edges. There is loss to the head of each volume, from minor chipping up to two centimetres. The bindings are sound, but boards are just starting to become loose. Ownership signature (Martha Boyse?) has been crossed out to the end papers in a couple of the volumes. Text is sound, but with mild to moderate foxing to the pages Worst to the first few pages of each volume. Overall though, still a reasonable copy of a scarce set (or part set!). .

A fabulous pencil sketch of a man in traditional dress. Monogrammed CR. The paper is cut in an odd shape. It looks like it has been drawn on a scrap, but the detail is exceptional. 225 x 165 mm (8Ÿ x 6œ inches). Gabriel Ivanovich Scorodomoff (Russian: ??????? ???????? ??????????) was a Russian engraver who lived and worked in London. He is best known for his work for Robert Sayer. His version of this work was called A Russian in a Winter Dress.

Paris Ancienne Librairie Furne / Combet & Cie. 1904 Deuxième édition. Un bel exemplaire de cette première réimpression des magnifiques illustrations de Leloir sur la vie de Richelieu. Livre relié d'origine en percaline verte avec des couleurs abondantes et un portrait de Richelieu en relief sur le panneau avant. Les armes du cardinal sont estampées à l'aveugle sur le panneau arrière. Bien qu'en grande partie propre, il y a quelques frottements avec perte de couleur au coin supérieur de la planche avant, et une grande zone de tache au haut de la planche arrière (voir photos). Petite déchirure fermée sur la page de garde vierge. L'intérieur de l'ouvrage est propre et bien rangé, avec un léger assombrissement des pages. La reliure tient bien, mais semble un peu lâche. Dans l'ensemble, il s'agit d'un bon exemplaire. 84 pages. 37cm x 30cm. Maurice Leloir était un illustrateur, aquarelliste, dessinateur, graveur, écrivain et collectionneur français de premier plan, réputé pour son art historiciste méticuleux et son dévouement à l'histoire du costume.

Second edition. A nice copy of this early reprint of Leloir's beautiful illustrations of the life of Cardinal Richelieu. Original hardback in green percaline with profuse colour and embossed portrait of Richelieu to the front board. The Cardinal's arms blind stamped to the rear panel. Although mainly clean, there is some rubbing with colour loss to the top corner of the front board, and a large area of stain to the top of the rear board (see photos). Small closed tear to the blank front end paper. Internally clean and tidy throughout, with a little darkening to the pages. The binding is holding well, but feels a little loose. Overall though a decent copy. 84 pages. 37cm x 30cm. Maurice Leloir was a prominent French illustrator, watercolorist, draftsman, printmaker, writer, and collector, renowned for his meticulous historicist art and devotion to costume history. .

CALLOT, Jacques.

Nancy Jacques Callot 1625 Première édition, premier (et probablement unique) état. Une eau-forte sur papier vergé issue de la série de 12 planches intitulée « La Noblesse », qui illustre les styles vestimentaires de la noblesse lorraine. Ces planches à la fois célébraient et tournaient en dérision les modes extravagantes de la cour à cette époque. Jacques Callot (15921635) fut l'un des graveurs les plus célèbres du début de la période baroque. Il a réalisé plus de 1 400 gravures témoignant de son époque. « Félibien affirme que les planches ont été exécutées après le retour de l'artiste à Nancy. Jacques Choux rattache cette série à la tradition des recueils de costumes (Van Bruyn, Vecellio, Boissard). Les plaques de cuivre sont conservées au Musée Lorrain de Nancy. » (Documentation du Louvre). Bien qu'il s'agisse d'une épreuve propre et de belle qualité, cette gravure présente des signes indiquant qu'elle a été tirée assez tardivement. Les motifs d'arrière-plan sont atténués et certains détails des bâtiments en arrière-plan sont presque indiscernables. Légère usure des bords. Fixée par quelques points de colle sur un support cartonné. Dimensions de la gravure : 143 x 92 mm (5Ÿ x 3œ pouces).

First edition, first (and probably only) state. An etching on laid paper belonging to the series of 12 plates entitled "La Noblesse" (The Nobility), which depicts costume styles of Lorraine nobility. These plates satirized and celebrated the exaggerated courtly fashions of the day. Jacques Callot (15921635) was one of the most celebrated printmakers of the early Baroque period. He created over 1400 engravings chronicling the period. " Félibien asserts that the plates were executed after the artist's return to Nancy. Jacques Choux links this series to the tradition of costume collections (Van Bruyn, Vecellio, Boissard). The copper plates are held at the Musée Lorrain in Nancy." (Louvre documentation). Although a good, clean print, this engraving shows signs of being quite late in the "print run." The background images are faded, and some of the details of buildings in the background are almost lost. A touch of edgewear. Lightly tipped onto a card mount. Engraving is 143 by 92mm (5Ÿ by 3œ inches).

Il s'agit d'un dessin en noir et blanc, signé par Carzou. Il représente une silhouette à la manière de Léonard de Vinci franchissant la porte du jardin du Clos Lucé à Amboise, dans la Loire. L'ouvrage est dédié à Gonzague Saint-Bris et indique qu'il est offert en signe d'amitié pour les nombreuses heures de divertissement passées en compagnie de Léonard de Vinci*. Le livre lui-même est présenté dans une jaquette illustrée impeccable. Il est désormais conservé dans une jaquette de protection. Le livre lui-même est en parfait état. Il regorge d'illustrations en couleur de Carzou. First edition. A beautiful copy of this lavishly illustrated work about Carzou. Embellished with a large original work by Carzou to the front end paper / half title. This is in black an white, and is signed by Carzou. It is a sketch of a Leonardo da vinci style figure, entering the gate into the garden at Clos Lucé in Amboise, Indre Loire. The work is dedicated to Gonzague Saint-Bris and states that it is in friendship for many hours of amusement spent in the company of Leonardo da Vinci* The book itself is in a spotless illustrated dust wrapper. Now held in protective wrapper. The book itself is spotless throughout. Full of colour illustrations by Carzou. Part catalogue raisonné, part biography, it is packed with attractive colour examples of Carzou's work across his career. 96 pages. 28cm x 21.5cm. *Gonzague Saint-Bris (19482017) was an acclaimed French novelist, biographer, and journalist known for his works celebrating romanticism and history. He was born in Loches, Indre-et-Loire, France, and grew up at the family-owned Château du Clos Lucé in Amboise, a historic site linked to Leonardo da Vinci. Saint-Bris was a prominent cultural figure who founded the literary festival La Forêt des Livres near Loches and the Cabourg Film Festival. He was also a recipient of multiple honours including the Prix Interallié in 2002. We also have available an original artwork by Carzou which celebrates Clos Lucé and similarly dedicated to Saint Bris. .

Le traité répertorie les substances médicinales dérivées d'animaux, tels que les vers et autres petites créatures, et de minéraux (lapideo), à la manière des études d'histoire naturelle du XVIIIe siècle qui combinaient des aspects de pharmacologie, de lithologie et de zoologie. Imprimé par la veuve de John Martel. Imprimeurs du roi et de la cour d'Occitanie. Martel exerçait à Montpellier (Monspelii) et était spécialisé dans les textes médicaux et universitaires en raison de la renommée de la faculté de médecine de la ville. Son imprimerie produisait des thèses, des mémoires et des traités, notamment Positiones medico-chirurgicae (1765, imprimé par sa veuve). Après sa mort vers 1760, sa veuve a poursuivi l'activité jusqu'à la fin des années 1760, conservant les titres prestigieux. Nous ne trouvons aucune information biographique sur Pierre Canron. D'après le style de cet ouvrage, il semble s'agir d'une thèse universitaire qu'il défendait.

Works of this kind drew upon earlier reference sources, notably Gronovius's Bibliotheca regni animalis atque lapidei, with a particular emphasis on practical therapeutics. Part of the vogue for classification of this time (which is the same period that Linnaeus was working). Sewn binding. There is a rear paper cover, but no spine or front cover, so substantially disbound. Nevertheless, the pages are clean and bright. Attractive vignette to the title page. A couple of other vignettes to end sections. The BnF and Worldcat both record and identical collation, so no initial pages are lacking. [4], 5-20, 19, ix pages with errata to page ix. 21cm x 13cm. Confroms to Worlcat / OCLC: 1144287793. Few library holdings, all seem to be in France. Printed by John Martel's widow. Printers to the King and court of Occitania. Martel operated from Montpellier (Monspelii), specializing in medical and academic texts due to the city's renowned medical faculty. His press produced works like theses, dissertations, and treatises, including Positiones medico-chirurgicae (1765, printed by his widow). After his death around 1760, his widow continued the business into the late 1760s, maintaining the prestigious titles. We can find no biographical details for Pierre Canron. From the style of this work, it appears to be a University thesis that he was defending. .

Ils ont eu une fille, Anne. André Villers (1930-2016) était un photographe et artiste visuel français.

Publisher's clamshell slipcase covered in mustard cloth, with black title on the spine. A touch of bumping and handling, but clean and tidy. Preface and poem by Georges Ribemont-Dessaignes. Poetic work by Andrée Caraire with 10 photographs by André VILLERS reproduced in colour phototype, full page and 2 original "linogravures" (one in black and one in colour) by Max PAPART. Signed by the two poets and the two artists. A homage to Alberto Magnelli. 58 pages loose in sheets within a title folder of the same paper. Georges Ribemont-Dessaignes (18841974) was a French writer, poet, playwright, and painter associated with the Dada movement. Max Papart (1911-1994) was a French painter, engraver, illustrator and collagist. Andrée Caraire was the pseudonym of Andrée Garbit, who was Papart's second wife. They married in 1949. They had a daughter, Anne. André Villers (1930-2016) was a French photographer and visual artist.

Dans la mythologie grecque, Hébé était la déesse de la jeunesse, fille de Zeus et d'Héra. Elle servait du nectar et de l'ambroisie aux Olympiens et épousa plus tard Héraclès, avec qui elle eut deux enfants, Alexia et Anicetus. On croyait qu'Hébé avait la capacité de restaurer la jeunesse. Hébé a perdu son poste d'échanson des dieux lorsqu'elle a trébuché et que sa robe a été déboutonnée, exposant ses seins comme on le voit ici. elle a été remplacée par Ganymède, l'amant et le protégé de Zeus.

A high quality print from the early nineteenth century. The print has been trimmed to the image itself, so the printer details have been cropped. It is likely to have been engraved by H. Cardon. He was a stipple engraver active in London and Paris from 1817 to 1835 after Francois Huet Villiers (1772-1813) was the son of Jean-Baptiste Huet (1745-1811). Based in London, he produced this work C1800. It is a portrait of the Goddess Hebe. The original watercolour is held in the British Museum. Ref. 1953,0918.1 A high quality engraving, which still holds its colour nicely. There is a scratch to the top left edge, but overall in good condition. Held under passepartout. Image is 37.5cm x 29cm Passepartout is 48cm x 38cm. In Greek mythology, Hebe was the goddess of youth, daughter of Zeus and Hera. She served nectar and ambrosia to the Olympians and later married Heracles, with who had 2 children, Alexia and Anicetus. Hebe was believed to have the ability to restore youth, Hebe lost her position as cupbearer to the gods when she stumbled and her dress was unbuttoned, exposing her breasts as shown here. she was replaced by Ganymede, Zeus's lover and protégé.

First edition. Salmon pink paper covers. Perfect bound. Cream paper. Very nice condition. The pink covers are clean and tidy, with a touch of handling, and a little fading to the spine only. Internally clean and tidy throughout. Several of the pieces had previously appeared in the Catholic Gazette, the Catholic Times and the Irish Rosary. As expected, many of the poems are expressing Roman Catholic beliefs, but others are quite light-hearted (such as "To a pair of Golden Slippers". 32 pages.
