CHAM (Amédée de Noé)

Paris Chez Aubert & cie 1845 Première édition. Très belle lithographie de Cham, coloriée à la main. Elle provient de l'album "Souvenirs de Garnison", des vues comiques de la vie militaire française. Produit en 1845. Cet album a été produit sous deux formes, la plus courante étant celle avec des illustrations en noir et blanc. La version de luxe, qui est manifestement beaucoup plus rare, bien que nous n'ayons trouvé aucune limitation, comporte des lithographies coloriées à la main. Cet exemplaire est magnifiquement propre, avec d'excellentes couleurs et juste un peu de noircissement sur les bords des pages. Le seul défaut est que l'impression (ou le massicotage) est légèrement inclinée par rapport à la page. (Voir la photographie). Un bel exemplaire. Bien que certains tirages de cet album mentionnent l'année 1850 comme année de publication, FirstSearch / Worldcat indique qu'il a été imprimé en 1845. L'image mesure 18 cm x 22 cm. CHAMPFLEURY & VAN MUYDEN, Evert.

Paris Maison Quantin 1889 Un fabuleux et unique exemplaire de cette première édition. Magnifique reliure signée P. RUBAN. Trois quarts marocain avec un design et des titres dorés de style art nouveau au dos. Planches marbrées vertes. La reliure n'est que légèrement frottée. Le plus bel élément de l'ouvrage est une aquarelle originale de Van Muyden (signée) sur la moitié de la page de titre, représentant un couple regardant par leurs fenêtres à volets, avec une collection de diablotins s'envolant sur les cloches de l'église. Nombreuses illustrations à l'eau-forte et en typographie dans le texte par Evert van Muyden. Les couvertures illustrées bleues rayées d'origine ont été conservées dans la reliure. L'intérieur de l'ouvrage est en excellent état. Portrait-frontispice de l'auteur à l'eau-forte et figures dans le texte. Exemplaire numéroté sur vergé du Marais. La limitation totale est de 1000 exemplaires, mais aucun autre ne comportera cette belle reliure ou illustration originale. Le deuxième conte se déroule à Loches le jour de Noël. Il s'agit peut-être de la symbolique de l'aquarelle originale, non rognée. 132 pages. 230 x 170 mm Evert Louis van Muyden (1853-1922) est un graveur, illustrateur et peintre né de parents suisses. Ses deux frères étaient également artistes. Bien qu'il ait également été portraitiste, on se souvient aujourd'hui de lui principalement pour ses illustrations de livres, qui restent populaires.

A fabulous and unique example of this first edition. Beautiful P. RUBAN signed binding. Three quarters Morocco with an attractive art nouveau gilt design and titles to the spine. Green marbled boards. Fractional rubbing only to the binding. The finest element of the book, is an original water-colour to the half title page, by Van Muyden (signed) showing a couple looking out of their shuttered windows, with a collection of imps flying way on church bells. Numerous etching and letterpress illustrations in the text by Evert van Muyden. The original blue striped illustrated covers have been preserved in the binding. Internally in excellent condition throughout. Portrait-frontispiece of the author in etching and figures in text. Numbered copy on vergé du Marais. Total limitation is for 1000 copies, but no other will include this lovely binding or original illustration. The second tale takes place in Loches on Christmas Day. This may be the symbolism of the original water-colour, Untrimmed. 132 pages. 230 by 170mm (9 by 6Ÿ inches). Evert Louis van Muyden (18531922) was an engraver, illustrator and painter, born to Swiss parents. His two brothers were also artists. Although also a portraitist, he is remembered today primarily for his book illustrations, which remain popular. .

Dans l'ensemble, cependant, une gravure propre et soignée. François Boucher (1703-1770). Boucher est sans doute surtout connu pour ses nombreux tableaux mythologiques, tels que « Diane aux bains » de 1742 (Paris, musée du Louvre), et ses sujets pastoraux, tels que « Pensent-ils au raisin » de 1749 (Londres, Wallace Collection). First edition. A very nice copy of this etching. Secluded caves or grottos. Engraved by Chedel after Bucher. Slight darkening to the sheet. A light crease to the edges. Overall though, a clean and tidy engraving. Within the plate, on a rock, is written BOUCHER... Quentin-Pierre Chedel (1705-1763) was a French engraver and etcher of the 18th century, best known for his prolific book illustration work and his engravings after other artists' designs. François Boucher (1703-1770). Boucher is perhaps best known for his many mythological paintings, such as Diana at the Bath of 1742 (Paris, Musée du Louvre), and pastoral subjects, such as Pensent-ils au Raisin of 1749 (London, Wallace Collection). Although this work is held in quite a few museum collections, it is surprisingly scarce, with no genuine copies available at the time of cataloguing. .

A lovely copy of this fourth edition volume. Clean red cloth, with black decoration, and gilt titles, decoration and vignettes. Fractional darkening to the red, but otherwise in Fine condition. All edges gilt. Clean and bright grey end-papers (replacements?). A touch of foxing to some pages. Small tear to page 1 repaired with archival tape. Contemporary owner's name to half title, but overall an exellent copy. With many full page and vignette engravings of animals. Décoré de titres dorés, avec la photo de l'artiste collée ; feuillet de titre en rouge et noir, orné d'une vignette de l'auteur. Les couvertures sont un peu frottées, mais saines. Les feuilles elles-mêmes sont en bon état, mais légèrement assombries. 33,5 cm x 25,5 cm.

First edition. A scarce album. Folder containing a title and 25 sheets of stiff card. Signed by the publisher to the verso of the title, with a stamped number 80 (limitation unknown). Green hardback with a facsimile of Chigot's signature. Decorated with gilt titles, with the artist's photo pasted on; title sheet in red and black and decorated with a vignette of the author. The covers are a little rubbed, but sound. The sheets themselves are in good condition, but slightly darkened. 33.5cm x 25.5cm. .

The front cover artwork is embossed in black with Heritage book white archival quality, Fourdrinier made, acid-free text paper on the inside and Hahnemuhle Ingres endpapers. 24 pages. The limitation is numbered in red, and signed by Billy Childish in blue pencil, with Hangman gallows stamp. In fine / as new condition.

Signed limited edition (50 copies) book with hand painted original cover. Published by Aquarium & Kestrel Gallery, Hay-on-Wye. Signed and numbered to back board by Billy Childish, with Hangman gallows and Aquarium sea horse stamps. Book is number 33 of only 50. There is a second signature on a heavy paper (almost like a bookplate) tipped into the inside of the front board. This is also adorned with one of Childish's hangman block cuts (a different one to that on the rear board. There is also a small red stamp that looks Chinese, but is indecipherable. 16 pages on heavy stock. Poetry in red type. 12 full colour plates. Hand bound hardback in hessian boards. Red handmade paper end papers. Book in very good condition with just a touch of darkening to edge of front board (from handling we suspect). 110 x 90 mm (4Œ x 3œ inches).

CHIMOT, Édouard

Paris Devambez 1927 Très bel exemplaire d'une eau-forte de Chimot, accompagnée d'un bref commentaire et paraphée par lui sur le bord inférieur. Elle est tirée de l'ouvrage "Le Belle de Nuit" de Maurice Magre. Elle a été publiée en divers états par Devambez. Les 75 exemplaires sur papier Japon sont accompagnés des illustrations en deux suites / états. L'une est celle qui figure dans le livre, l'autre est celle des épreuves avec les remarques de Chimot. En plus de la remarque imprimée à la base, cet exemplaire est également paraphé au crayon. Une belle impression, une image fortement imprimée. Le papier de soutien a considérablement noirci avec le temps. Il semblerait que toutes les épreuves n'aient pas été signées. Nous joignons à cette liste une photographie d'une des copies du Japon, où les deux états peuvent être vus (le nôtre à droite) mais dans cet exemple, il n'y a pas d'annotation ou d'initiales de Chimot. La surface gravée est de 21,5 cm x 16 cm. La feuille mesure 30.5cm x 23cm.

A very nice copy of an etching by Chimot, with a brief comment and initialled by him to the bottom edge. This was taken from the work "Le Belle de Nuit" by Maurice Magre. It was published in various states by Devambez. The 75 copies on Japon paper, came with the illustrations in two suites / states. One was that as shown in the book, the other was the proof copies with remarks by Chimot. In addition to the printed remark to the base, this copy is also initialled in pencil. A nice impression, heavily printed image. The backing paper has considerably darkened over time. It would seem that not all of the proof copies were signed. We attach to this listing a photograph of one of the Japon copies, where the two states can be seen (ours to the right) but in this example, there is no annotation or initial by Chimot. Engraving area is 21.5cm x 16cm. The sheet is 30.5cm x 23cm. .

CHODOWIECKI, Daniel

Germany Johann Christian Dieterich 1777 Une très belle collection de planches gravées miniatures de Chodowiecki, toutes consacrées à l'apparence et à la mode. L'uvre se compose de deux parties (bien que les planches soient mélangées). Dix d'entre elles sont des illustrations tirées du *Göttinger Taschenkalender* de Lichtenberg. Ce style s'apparente à l'imagerie utilisée dans *Le Progrès du libertin* de Hogarth et s'est apparemment inspiré de cette série. La série « illustre le « Progrès de la vertu et du vice » ; la série est divisée en deux parties, l'une illustrant la vie « vertueuse » juxtaposée à celle, moralement condamnable, d'un homme et d'une femme respectivement ; chacune est illustrée par une série de portraits en médaillons qui semblent refléter les effets de la moralité (ou de l'absence de celle-ci) sur la physionomie des modèles, soulignant ainsi la théorie de Lichtenberg selon laquelle l'expression est le miroir de l'âme. » (British Museum). La série complète comprend douze planches gravées. Toutes sont présentes ici. Entre ces planches s'intercalent dix-sept planches gravées par les mêmes artistes représentant des coiffures à la mode. Provenant pour la plupart de la série « Coiffures Angloises », certaines sont issues de « Coiffures de Berlin » et quelques-unes semblent représenter des coiffures françaises complexes de l'époque. La reliure est une simple carte recouverte de papier rigide, présentant des frottements et des fentes au niveau du dos. À l'intérieur, les gravures sont collées sur du papier rigide. Bien que la plupart des images soient en assez bon état, l'une d'entre elles a été déchirée en deux et recollée en deux parties, et une autre présente un coin arraché. Toutes présentent de légères usures sur les bords. Il s'agit néanmoins d'une collection attrayante. 27 feuillets. Collées d'un seul côté. 9,5 cm x 6 cm. Les gravures du « Göttinger Taschenkalender » correspondent aux numéros BM 1863,0613.380-391, pour lesquels il existe une notice détaillée. Daniel Nikolaus Chodowiecki (1726-1801) fut un graveur et illustrateur allemand majeur du XVIIIe siècle, particulièrement actif dans le domaine de l'illustration de livres et de calendriers.

A very nice collection of miniature engraved plates by Chodowiecki, all focussed on appearance and fashion. The work is in two parts (although the plates are mixed). Ten of them are illustrations from Lichtenberg's Göttinger Taschenkalender. This is similar to the imagery used in "Rake's progress" by Hogarth and was apparently inspired by this series. The series is" illustrating the 'Progress of Virtue and Vice'; the series is split into two parts, one illustrating the 'virtuous' life juxtaposed to the morally condemnable of a man and of a woman respectively; each is illustrated by a series of portraits in roundels which seem to reflect upon the effects of morality (or lack of the latter) on the physiognomy of the sitters, hence underlining Lichtenberg's theory of expression being the mirror of the soul." (British Museum). The full series is twelve engraved plates. All are present here. Interspersed with these plates, are seventeen engraved plates by the same artists showing hair fashions. Mostly from the series "Coiffures Angloises" there are also a number from "Coiffures de Berlin" and a couple which appear to be intricate French hair styles of the time. The binding is a simple stiff paper covered card, with rubbing and splitting to the spine. Inside, the prints are pasted onto stiff paper. Although most of the images are in fairly good condition, one has been torn in half and pasted down in two parts, and another has a corner torn off. All have a little edgewear. Nevertheless, and attractive collection. 27 leaves. Pasted to one side only. 9.5cm x 6cm. The Göttinger Taschenkalender prints conform to BM 1863,0613.380-391 who have a lengthy entry on this work. Daniel Nikolaus Chodowiecki (1726-1801) was a major 18th-century German engraver and illustrator, especially active in book and calendar imagery. .

Six eaux-fortes originales gravées en noir et burins et maniér noires par Albert Woda, et 6 intercalaires calligraphiés à pleine page par Franck Lalou. Tirage limité à 70 exemplaires numérotés sur papier Rives vélin pour le texte et Arakaji japon naturel pour la calligraphie, signés par Woda et Lalou. Un des 50 exemplaires numérotés de 8 à 57, celui-ci est le numéro 24. La soie recouvrant le livre s'est détachée à certains endroits et présente quelques taches. L'intérieur du livre est en très bon état, à l'exception d'une planche qui présente des taches. Chaque planche est signée dans la marge par Woda.

Six original etchings engraved in black and burins et maniér noires by Albert Woda, and 6 full-page calligraphic interleaves by Franck Lalou. Limited edition of 70 numbered copies on Rives vélin paper for text and natural Arakaji japon for calligraphy, signed by both Woda and Lalou. One of 50 copies numbered from 8 to 57, this is number 24. Silk covering the book has become detached in some areas, and has some stains. Internally the book very good, except for one plate which has stains to it. Each plate is additionally signed in the margin by Woda.

Half calf binding with brown boards. The boards are somewhat stained. The binding is rubbed to the corners and edges. The gilt decoration and titles to the spine are still attractive though. Has the ownership signature of G. Goldney, Buckfield to the front end paper. Small bookshop stamp of Paul A Struck of New York to the inside board. Some of the pages and plates have light water staining (a couple there is more distinct staining), and there is light foxing in places. Pages a touch darkened. Overall, a nice copy though. Unpaginated. Julius Caesar Ibbetson (1759-1817), was a Yorkshire painter noted for his rural scenes and depictions of animals. This is the first printing of an important work of natural history, which was re-printed in 1848/9. 330 by 260mm (13 by 10Πinches). .

London William Pickering 1853 Première édition. Une réimpression ornée du livre de prières communes de la reine Élisabeth. Il s'agit d'une réimpression du livre de prières de 1569, mais mise à jour, avec des prières pour la restauration de la famille royale, des prières pour Charles le Martyr et des prières pour la reine Victoria. La reliure ornée est un peu ternie et frottée, mais reste attrayante. L'étiquette est manquante et ne montre donc que l'empreinte. Malheureusement, la page de titre et la gravure frontispice d'Elizabeth manquent également (les deux sont fournies en photocopie). Le livre commence donc par la page de garde. La page de garde est marquée et comporte des crayons de couleur. Sinon, les pages sont propres, mais il y a un peu de noircissement. Hormis la perte du titre, le livre est en bon état. Le dernier feuillet présente quelques taches d'encre. Il semblerait que le livre ait été ré-encadré sans les feuilles manquantes, car il n'y a pas de signe de perte. Porte l'ex-libris de Stephen Lewin de Boston. Peut-être l'architecte et urbaniste de Boston (Lincolnshire). Mary Byfield, de la Chiswick Press, a découpé les blocs de ce livre de prière commune orné et attrayant. Non paginé. a-AA5. 180 x 130 mm.

First edition thus. An ornate reprint of the book of Common Prayer of Queen Elizabeth. This is a reprint of the 1569 prayer book, but brought up to date, with prayers for the Restoration of the Royal Family, Prayers for Charles the Martyr and prayers for Queen Victoria included. The Ornate binding is a little dulled and rubbed, but still attractive. Label lacking, so only shows the imprint. Unfortunately, the title page and frontis engraving of Elizabeth are also lacking (both are supplied in photocopy). The book thus begins with the contents page. The contents page is marked and with crayon. Otherwise the pages are clean, but a touch of darkening. Apart from the loss of title, the book is in decent condition. The final leaf has some ink staining. It would seem that the book has been re-cased without the missing leaves, as there is no sign of loss. Bears the bookplate of Stephen Lewin of Boston. Possibly the architect and town planner from Boston Lincolnshire. Mary Byfield of the Chiswick Press cut the blocks of this ornate and attractive book of Common Prayer. Unpaginated. a-AA5. 180 by 130mm (7 by 5 inches). .

CIG

France NA 1880 Belle caricature originale d'un musicien debout, tenant son tuba (ou son euphonium) sous le bras. Il fume et regarde de côté. Il semble porter un uniforme militaire, mais il a aussi une boucle d'oreille. Il s'agit donc probablement d'un uniforme d'orchestre de la fin du XIXe siècle. Dessiné au crayon. L'image est en très bon état, mais présente quelques petites taches d'encre. La feuille mesure 20 cm x 11,5 cm. Signée au crayon "Cig" en bas à droite de la feuille. Une belle pièce.

A nice original caricature of a standing bandsman, holding his tuba (or his euphonium) under his arm. He is smoking and looking to one side. He appears to be in military uniform, but also has an earring, so probably just a late nineteenth century band uniform. Drawn in pencil. The image is in very good condition, but does have a couple of small ink stains to it. Sheet is 20cm x 11.5cm. Signed in pencil "Cig" to the bottom right of the sheet. A nice piece. .

Avec un appendice contenant des détails sur la structure, le compas et les particularités de divers instruments de l'orchestre, par Geo. Oakey. Original en tissu rouge gaufré à l'aveugle avec des titres dorés sur la première page et sur le dos. Propre, mais avec une légère décoloration au dos et un assombrissement dû au soleil sur la première planche. L'intérieur de l'ouvrage est propre et bien rangé.
