Paris Chez Volland, Libraire 1792 Deuxième édition. Un très bel exemplaire de la nouvelle constitution, présentée au roi en septembre 1791. Cet exemplaire porte la date de 1792 sur la page de titre. Il semble qu'il s'agisse de la deuxième édition de Volland (voir ci-dessous). Couvertures originales en papier bleu foncé, avec titre (daté par erreur de 1791 sur la première page de couverture). A l'intérieur de la couverture, une charmante inscription contemporaine intitulée "A vin" vante les vertus de la lecture de l'ouvrage. (Par le professeur A.N. Motte ou Hotte). A l'intérieur de la couverture arrière se trouve une autre annotation signée par le professeur et datée de l'an 1 de l'Empire français (Ie. février 1805). Les pages sont en très bon état, propres, avec seulement un peu d'usure sur les bords. Le livre contient la Déclaration des droits de l'homme et du citoyen ; la Constitution française ; un message du roi à l'Assemblée nationale, le 13 septembre 1791 ; le discours et le serment du roi, pour l'acceptation de la Constitution, à la session de l'Assemblée nationale, le 14 septembre 1791 ; et le discours de M. Thouret, président de l'Assemblée nationale, au roi, le 14 septembre 1791. 91 pages. 13cm x 7cm. Conforme à WorldCat / OCLC : 869381712. et à la BnF FRBNF44033385. Édition rare, nous n'en avons trouvé aucune en vente au moment du catalogage. Chez Volland était un libraire et éditeur parisien bien connu, situé sur le quai des Augustins, reconnu pour avoir publié d'importants ouvrages politiques d'auteurs tels que Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Mme Riccoboni et Etienne-Louis Geoffroy.

Second edition. A rather lovely copy of the new, constitution, presented to the King in September 1791. This copy is date 1792 to the title page. It appears to be the second Volland edition (see below). Original dark blue paper covers, with title (erroneously dated 1791 to the front cover). To the inside cover, is a charming contemporary inscription entitle "A vin" extolling the virtues of reading the work. (By professor A.N. Motte or Hotte). To the inside rear cover is a further annotation signed by professor and dated Year 1 of the French Empire (Ie. February 1805). Pages are in very good, clean condition, with a touch of edgewear only. The book contains the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen; the French Constitution; A message from the King to the National Assembly, September 13, 1791; The speech and oath of the King, for the acceptance of the Constitution, at the session of the National Assembly, September 14, 1791; And the speech by Mr. Thouret, President of the National Assembly, to the King, September 14, 1791. 91 pages. 13cm x 7cm. Chez Volland was a well-known Parisian bookseller and publisher located on the Quai des Augustins, recognized for publishing important political works by authors such as Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Mme Riccoboni, and Etienne-Louis Geoffroy. .

Contient le premier volume : Nov 1948-Avril 1849. pages 1-368. 24 numéros plus l'Almanach pour 1849 et la table des matières de la première année. Volume deux : pages 1-168. Douze numéros de la deuxième année. Soit un total de 36 numéros. Cet exemplaire est relié sans les couvertures de chaque numéro. Il porte un titre général pour le premier volume, mais aucun pour le second. Jolie reliure en demi-cuir, avec titres dorés et plats marbrés. Propre avec un peu de frottement. A l'intérieur, la revue est propre et bien rangée, avec des textes d'A. Lireux, C. Cabaguel, P. Vertot, E. de la Bedollière, Gérard de Nerval, etc. illustrés de nombreux dessins en noir et blanc de Bertall, Nadar, Fabritzius, Otto, Lorentz, Béguin, Quillenbois, etc. L'une des illustrations comporte également un joli coloriage à la main (vraisemblablement postérieur). Cette publication a débuté peu avant l'élection de Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte comme premier président de la République. Déjà suspect, le prince-président ("Prince pour rire") et son entourage (Thiers...) sont vivement caricaturés. C'est également dans cette revue que l'on trouve l'une des premières bandes dessinées hebdomadaires, avec le personnage de "Mossieu Reac" créé par Nadar. [iv], 1-368,. 1-168 pages. 28cm x 19.5cm.

Atttractive half leather binding, with gilt titles and marbled boards. Clean with a touch of rubbing. Inside, the revue is clean and tidy throughout, with texts by A. Lireux, C. Cabaguel, P. Vertot, E. de la Bedollière, Gérard de Nerval, etc. illustrated with numerous black and white drawings by Bertall, Nadar, Fabritzius, Otto, Lorentz, Béguin, Quillenbois, etc. There is also one of the illustrations with attractive hand colouring (presumably later). This publication began shortly before the election of Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte as the first president of the Republic. Already suspect, the prince-president ("Prince pour rire") and his entourage (Thiers...) are sharply caricatured. La seconde moitié de l'année 1882 de cette revue pour la jeunesse, *Les Enfants*, qui reflète le renouveau patriotique de la littérature enfantine française après 1870, coïncide avec les réformes scolaires de Jules Ferry qui ont rendu l'enseignement primaire gratuit, laïc et obligatoire. Les numéros hebdomadaires (juillet-décembre) contenant des contes moraux, des leçons de civisme, des aventures géographiques et des fables en feuilleton promouvant les valeurs républicaines, la fierté coloniale et le devoir familial sont ici reliés ensemble. Les illustrations gravées sur bois représentent des enfants vertueux, des soldats héroïques et des provinces idéalisées. Reliure en percale rouge de l'éditeur, avec décorations et titres dorés et noirs. Couvertures en bon état mais légèrement noircies. Quelques traces de vieillissement et de légères rousseurs. Pages 1191-1710, tous les bords dorés. Certificat d'excellence collé au début, avec un message manuscrit.

Scarce French children's periodical. The second half of the year 1882 of this juvenile periodical Les Enfants, which reflects the post-1870 patriotic revival in French children's literature, coinciding with Jules Ferry's school reforms that made primary education free, secular, and mandatory. Weekly issues (July - December) of moral tales, civics lessons, geography adventures, and serialised fables promoting republican values, colonial pride, and family duty are bound together here. The woodcut illustrations depict virtuous children, heroic soldiers, and idealised provinces. Publisher's red percaline binding, with gilt and black decoration and titles. Boards in good shape but a little darkened. Some age toning and moderate foxing. Pages 1191-1710, all edges gilt. Prize for excellence certificate tipped-in to front, with manuscript message.

Paris Armand le Chevalier 1873 Première édition. Deux volumes. Une merveilleuse collection de fac-similés d'affiches politiques du début de la guerre franco-prussienne et de la commune de Paris jusqu'à la fin du mois de mai 1871. Il s'agit de reproductions complètes des affiches originales, avec coloriage à la main le cas échéant. Le dos est en cuir avec des étiquettes en cuir vert et des titres dorés. Le dos est un peu frotté, mais reste attrayant. Les planches marbrées sont légèrement frottées. A l'intérieur, les pages sont propres et bien rangées. Les pages arrière (index), imprimées sur du papier moins cher, sont un peu plus sombres. Le premier volume traite de la guerre et du siège. (Paris a été assiégé et encerclé par les Allemands de septembre 1870 au 28 janvier 1871, date à laquelle les Français se sont rendus). Les dures conditions de l'armistice et l'humiliation de la défaite ont contribué à la radicalisation de la population parisienne. Le deuxième volume contient des fac-similés des affiches politiques de la Commune, qui s'est achevée le 28 mai 1871. La page de titre originale du premier volume est en quatre couleurs (drapeau français et fond jaune). S'y ajoute une seconde page de titre, datée de l'année suivante, qui a été insérée lors de l'édition du second volume, les deux étant vendus comme un ensemble. [vi], 1022, 676 pages. Le gouvernement français, basé à Versailles et dirigé par Adolphe Thiers, considérait la Commune comme une menace existentielle. À partir d'avril 1871, les forces gouvernementales lancent une offensive militaire pour reprendre Paris. L'assaut final, connu sous le nom de "Semaine sanglante", débute le 21 mai. De violents combats de rue s'ensuivent et des barricades sont érigées dans toute la ville. First edition. Two volumes. A marvellous collection of facsimiles of political posters from the start of the Franco-Prussian war and the commune of Paris, through to the end of May 1871. These are complete reproductions of the original posters, complete with hand colouring where appropriate. Leather spine with green leather labels and gilt titles. There is some rubbing to the spine, but still attractive. Marbled boards with a little rubbing. Internally the pages are clean and tidy throughout. A little darkening to the rear pages (of index) which are printed on cheaper paper. The first volume deals with the war and the siege. (Paris was besieged and surrounded by the Germans from September 1870 to january 28th 1871 when the French surrendered). The harsh terms of the armistice and the humiliation of defeat contributed to the radicalization of Paris's population. Just weeks after the siege, the revolutionary Paris Commune was declared.* Volume two contains facsimiles of the political posters during the commune, which ended on May 28th 1871. The original title page from volume one is in four colours (the French flag and a yellow background). In addition to this, there is a second title page, dated the following year, which was inserted when the second volume was produced, and the two sold as a set. [vi], 1022., 676. pages. Each volume has indexes. 28cm x 23cm. *The commune was a radical and revolutionary government that ruled Paris from March 18 to May 28, 1871. The French government, now based in Versailles and led by Adolphe Thiers, viewed the Commune as an existential threat. Beginning in April 1871, government forces launched a military offensive to retake Paris. The final assault, known as "Bloody Week" (La Semaine sanglante), began on May 21. Fierce street fighting ensued, with barricades erected throughout the city. The government's victory was marked by mass executions and reprisals: estimates of Communard deaths range from 20,000 to 30,000, making it one of the bloodiest events in Parisian history. .

Frontis portrait of Pope Pius X to volume 1. These volumes came from the St Birgittae de Sion (Bridgettine) monastery at Chudleigh in Devon. They were donated to the Abbey (and each has an inscription stating this) by the Rev. Benedict Williamson. Wiliamson was a prominent Catholic Architect, and supporter of the Bridgetinnes. He was ordained a priest in 1909 and was behind many of the finest early 20th Century Catholic Churches. *Acta Apostolicae Sedis (Latin for "Acts of the Apostolic See"), often cited as AAS, is the official gazette of the Holy See, appearing about twelve times a year. It was established by Pope Pius X on 29 September 1908 with the decree Promulgandi Pontificias Constitutiones, and publication began in January 1909. It contains all the principal decrees, encyclical letters, decisions of Roman congregations, and notices of ecclesiastical appointments. The laws contained in it are to be considered promulgated when published, and effective three months from date of issue, unless a shorter or longer time is specified in the law

The bound collection comprises 9 pamphlets with poems and essays, all published in the same format by G. Nicholson. These are published as part of "The Literary Miscellany: or Extracts and Selections Classical and Scientific." Each has an engraved title page, and an engraving on the final page. White hardback (paper covered boards). Leather label to spine with gilt title "Poems 1" which implies a second unknown collection. The white boards are a little marked and darkened, but still presentable. Internally slightly darkened, but overall in very good condition. To each of the items, is a penciled number on the title, presumably giving a publication number (?) The advert to the rear of the book indicates that around 100 such pamphlets were produced (or intended). Text in English. The collection comprises:

Une très belle copie, une bonne impression claire et un papier propre. La surface gravée est de 26cm x 31cm. La feuille fait 43.5cm x 50cm. Antique print titled 'De Groote Zee en Rivier-Vis-Markt'. This print originates from Beschryvinge van Amsterdam (..)' by Casparus Commelin. A very nice copy, good clear print and clean paper. engraved area is 26cm x 31cm. Sheet is 43.5cm x 50cm. Casparus Commelin (1636-1693), publisher and bookseller in Amsterdam. .

Une grande impression, que l'on croit provenir de la grande copie papier de la Beschryvinge van Amsterdam, l'ouvrage fondamental de Commelin. Bonne impression propre sur un papier vergé épais et propre. Le papier contient un filigrane de trois croissants de lune. Ce type de filigrane est fréquent dans l'imprimerie islamique et provient probablement d'un papier italien du milieu ou de la fin du dix-huitième siècle. Taille de l'image 26cm x 34cm. Taille de la feuille 43cm x 50.5cm. Un bel exemple non coloré de cette gravure.

A lovely copper plate engraving of the Ooster Kerk. Printed on two sheets, pasted together. A large print, believed to be from the large paper copy of the Beschryvinge van Amsterdam, Commelin's seminal work. Good clean impression on clean heavy laid paper. The paper holds a watermark of three crescent moons. This is often seen in Islamic printing, and was probably from Italian paper stock of the mid to late eighteenth century. Image size 26cm x 34cm. Sheet size 43cm x 50.5cm. A lovely uncoloured example of this engraving. First Edition .

De DAPPER (1663), VON ZESEN (1664) ou COMMELIN (1693). Voir Hameleers 62 ; D'Ailly 129. La carte est quelque peu assombrie et présente des plis au milieu. Quelques trous d'épingle au niveau de la pliure. Dans l'ensemble, il s'agit d'un bel objet. Sous un passepartout. (Celui-ci est un peu marqué et sale). 435 x 520 mm.

A couple of pinholes to the crease. Overall an attractive item. Under a passepartout. (This a little marked and dirty). 435 x 520 mm. .

Lyon Gadola et Cie. 1878 Première édition. Lithographie représentant un personnage vêtu de blanc, représentant la République, accueillant des personnes diverses à l'Exposition universelle de Paris. Chromolithographie coloriée à la main. Légèrement assombrie, quelques piqûres sur les bords et une petite tache dans un coin. Il s'agit de l'une des pièces exposées au musée Carnavalet, Histoire de Paris (avec des variations de couleur). Un bon exemplaire de cet ouvrage rare. 260 x 340 mm

First edition. A lithograph showing a white robed figure, representing the Republic, welcoming diverse people at the Universal Exhibition in Paris. Hand coloured chromo-lithograph. Slightly darkened, a little nicking to the edges, and a small stain to one corner. This is one of the exhibits in the Carnavalet Museum, History of Paris (with variations of colour). A decent copy of this scarce item. 260 by 340mm (10Œ by 13œ inches). .

La plaque provient de : Nieuwe atlas, van de voornaamste gebouwen en gezigten der stad Amsterdam, met derzelver beknopte beschryvingen. Traduction : Nouvel atlas des bâtiments et des vues les plus importants d'Amsterdam, avec leur description succincte. Pierre Fouquet Jr. publié à Amsterdam 1760-1805. Surface imprimée 280 mm x 380 mm. La feuille mesure 390 mm x 460 mm. La feuille est saine, mais présente un pli au centre à l'endroit où elle a été pliée, ainsi que des marques, des assombrissements et des taches sur les bords. Il s'agit néanmoins d'un bel exemplaire d'une gravure peu commune. Publiée par l'artiste et marchand d'art Pierre Fouquet Jr (1729-1800). La première série de 10 paysages urbains a été publiée en 1760-61, gravée par Paul van Liender et Simon Fokke d'après les dessins du célèbre graveur de villes et de paysages Jan de Beyer, suivie en 1764-68 d'une série de 12 vues par Caspar Philips Jacobsz, qui a également gravé les planches d'après J. de Vlaaming en 1768-69. 73 planches ne sont pas datées, dont 59 par H. Schoute qui ne datait jamais ses gravures et les signait rarement. D'autres artistes ont contribué à l'Atlas : C. Bogerts d'après H. Keun, J. van der Schley d'après P.R. van Dijk et Coppier et Simon Fokke d'après six autres dessins de Jan de Beyer.

An attractive engraving of the Weigh House, but also the crowd in front, which shows merchants and pedestrians. Plate originates from: Nieuwe atlas, van de voornaamste gebouwen en gezigten der stad Amsterdam, met derzelver beknopte beschryvingen. Translation: New Atlas of the most important buildings and views of Amsterdam, including their short descriptions. Pierre Fouquet Jr. published in Amsterdam 1760-1805. Printed area 280 mm x 380 mm. Sheet is 390 mm x 460 mm. The sheet is sound, but has a crease down the centre where folded, and has some marking, darkening and staining to the edges. Still an attractive copy of an uncommon engraving. Published by artist and art dealer Pierre Fouquet Jr. (1729-1800). The first series of 10 townscapes having been issued in 1760-61 engraved by Paul van Liender and Simon Fokke after the drawings by the well known engraver of town and landscapes Jan de Beyer, followed in 1764-68 by a series of 12 views by Caspar Philips Jacobsz, who also engraved the plates after J. de Vlaaming in 1768-69. 73 plates are undated, 59 of which are by H. Schoute who never dated his engravings and seldom signed them. Other artists who contributed to the Atlas are C. Bogerts after H. First edition. Original paper covers, now protected by glassine wrap. Text in French. The front and back covers are both partially darkened. Front has a small label at the bottom left and small ink number to the top left. Inside front has small label from Lucien Bodin Librairie, Paris. Title page has neat ink name to top right, dated 1913. Light foxing throughout. Overall in an excellent condition. 91 pages. 210 x 135 mm (8Πx 5Πinches). The Edinburgh Review was one of the most influential British magazines of the 19th century. This translation was extracted from an article in issue CCII.

A large engraving showing Charles Churchill as a bear, holding a wooden club and a tankard of beer. Hogarth's dog, Trump, urinates on a copy of Churchill's "Epistle to Hogarth" This is a large format engraving. The print is 38 x 28.5cm and the sheet is 49.5 x 36cm. ((19œ by 14Œ inches). Most copies we have seen for sale are 19cm x 26cm. Very good condition with no significant edgewear. A few small stains only to the edges. There is a small repaired enclosed tear to the top border. Print area is very good.

True first edition of the scarce children's book. Self published. Precedes the first commercial edition by two years. Hand coloured title page. Two pages have small closed tears. Otherwise clean and tidy inside and out. Charming drawings and simple poetry. Probably has renewed spine. Slight rusting to title page only. Overall a lovely copy. 190 x 190 mm (7œ x 7œ inches).

First edition. Hardback. In publisher's brown pictorial cloth boards. The eight full-page illustrations - which includes the frontispiece - each has a tissue guard that is somewhat foxed. There are other in-text illustrations, one a woodcut. The boards are lightly bumped at the corners, but overall in good condition, with a neat ink written owner's name - dated 1890 - to the half title. 304 pages. 230 x 145 mm (9 x 5Ÿ inches).

Leipzig Noerner 1830 Première édition. Exemplaire rare de ce portfolio, comprenant quarante pages de texte introductif et neuf planches illustrées détachées. (Complet). Les planches n'ont jamais été reliées (comme c'est habituellement le cas). Le texte est relié, mais présente des découpes au niveau du dos qui suggèrent qu'il était destiné à être relié à un moment donné. La couverture ne montre aucun signe d'avoir jamais été cousue. La couverture en papier est de couleur vert page, avec des titres noirs, une illustration et une vignette de Dante sur la couverture avant. Le bord inférieur est légèrement froissé et la moitié inférieure de la couverture avant est nettement foncée (voir photo). Les premières pages du texte sont légèrement foncées et rouillées. Le reste est en bon état, avec quelques traces de rouille. Les neuf planches sont légèrement rouillées et présentent de légères traces d'usure sur le bord inférieur. Dans l'ensemble, il s'agit d'un exemplaire en bon état d'un ouvrage rare. Les dessins illustrant le *Paradiso* de Dante ont été initialement conçus pour décorer les murs de la Villa Massimi, à Rome. Cependant, le projet n'a pas été réalisé par son concepteur, Cornelius, qui a été convoqué à Munich par le prince héritier de Bavière pour entreprendre une commande plus ambitieuse. À sa place, Veith a pris la responsabilité et a réalisé les fresques d'après Dante dans la Villa Massimi. 40 [ix] pages. 21 cm x 26,5 cm. Conforme à WorldCat / OCLC : 253039729.

First edition. A scarce copy of this portfolio, with forty pages of introductory text, and nine loose illustrated plates. (Complete). The plates have never been bound in (as is normal). The text is held together, but has cuts to spine which suggest it was intended to be bound at some point. The cover shows no sign of ever have been sewn. Paper cover is a page green, with black titles, illustration and vignette of Dante to the front cover. There is a little creasing to the bottom edge, and the front cover shows significant darkening to the bottom half of it (see photograph). The text pages have a little darkening and foxing to the first pages. The rest is sound, with a touch of foxing. The nine plates are a little foxed and with slight edgewear to the bottom edge. Overall, this is a decent condition copy of a scarce item. The designs illustrating Dante's *Paradiso* were originally conceived for the wall decorations of the Villa Massimi, Rome. The project, however, was not realised by its deviser, Cornelius, who was summoned to Munich by the Crown Prince of Bavaria to undertake a more ambitious commission. Légères pertes aux bords et aux coins, mais dans l'ensemble, l'ouvrage est en bon état. Les plats intérieurs présentent une certaine décoloration, qui semble ironiquement être une tache de vin rouge ! Le reste du livre est en très bon état, avec un léger noircissement des pages et quelques taches/marques mineures. Le demi-titre présente une déchirure fermée sur le bord. Nom de l'ancien propriétaire sur la page de titre. The author deals exclusively with white wine (which is more complex than that of reds). Burgundy leather spine with simple gilt titles. Burgundy marbled boards. A little loss to the edges and corners, but overall is sound. The inside boards have some discolouration, ironically appears to be a red wine stain! The rest of the book are in very good condition, with moderate darkening to the pages, and a few minor stains / marks. Half title has a closed tear to the edge. L'auteur Pierre Coton (1564 - 1626) était un jésuite français, ami et confesseur du roi français Henri IV et de son fils, qui devint plus tard le roi Louis XIII. Après l'assassinat d'Henri IV en 1610, Coton fut souvent victime de polémiques et d'attaques, qui imputaient le régicide aux Jésuites. Son nom est entré dans l'histoire sous la forme d'une boutade : "Le roi a du coton dans les oreilles !". Devenu, grâce à la protection de Marie de Médicis, le confesseur du jeune Louis XIII, il reste influent jusqu'à sa disgrâce, liée au coup de force du jeune roi contre les Concini en 1617.

Contemporary inscription to title showing ownership of Nicolas Sartonio of Miltenberg. Clasps are missing, vellum is browned and stained, slightly rubbed but still presentable. First Latin edition of this polemic, originally published in French in 1610 under the title "Institution catholique". The author Pierre Coton (1564 - 1626) was a French Jesuit, friend and confessor of the French King Henry IV and his son, who later became King Louis XIII. After the assassination of Henry IV in 1610, Coton was often the victim of polemics and attacks, who blamed the regicide on the Jesuits. His name went down in history in the form of a quip: "The king has cotton in his ears!" Having become, thanks to the protection of Marie de Medici, the confessor of the young Louis XIII, he remained influential until his disgrace, linked to the coup de force of the young king against the Concini in 1617. .
