Boston N/P 1893 Lettre du libraire W.B. Clarke & co. à M. W.S. Hyde, l'informant qu'il conservait un livre qu'il avait acheté jusqu'à ce qu'il passe d'autres commandes, afin d'économiser les frais d'expédition d'un seul article. Sur papier à en-tête de la société, avec les coordonnées du libraire et son adresse à Washington Street, Boston. La lettre est écrite à la main et signée au nom de la société par "Fleet". Écrit à l'encre brune, celle-ci est devenue un peu floue aux endroits où elle a été humide, mais reste lisible. Le cachet de la date indique la réception à la base. Une seule feuille, vierge au verso et pliée en trois. Rien d'extraordinaire, mais un beau morceau d'histoire éphémère de la librairie. 24cm x 15cm.

A letter from the bookseller, W.B. Clarke & co. to the Mr W.S. Hyde, informing him that they were holding a book he had purchased, until he made future orders, in order to save the shipping on a single item. On company headed paper, with the details of the bookseller, and their address in Washington Street, Boston. It is hand written, and signed on behalf of the company by "Fleet?". Written in brown ink, this has become a little blurred in parts where it has got damp, but still legible. Date stamp to show receipt to the base. A Single leaf, blank to the verso and folded into three. Not earth shattering, but a nice piece of bookseller ephemeral history. 24cm x 15cm. .

CLAUDE

London Faber & Faber 1959

First edition of this novel, the title of which derives from an old Jewish legend. Set in the newly established state of Israel, it follows the story of a young couple, who have gone to search for oil. Original dust wrapper. A little nicking and bumping to the top edge. Slight darkening to the edges. Green boards - these have an old damp stain to the spine and boards - also visible to the inside boards, but doesn't affect the wrapper or the rest of the book. Rest of book is clean and tidy, with just a touch of darkening / foxing to the closed page edges. This is Claude's third novel. 223 pages. 190 by 130mm (7œ by 5 inches).

Amstelaedami / Amsterdam Ex Officina Schouteniana / [Petrus, Schouten] 1760 Eerste editie. De werken van Claudianus, met syllogismen en aantekeningen. Hedendaags blind gestempeld wit leer met titels in zwarte inkt op de rug. Het leer is wat donkerder geworden, met een gerepareerde scheur in de bovenrand van de rug. Inwendig schoon en netjes, met een beetje markering / donkerder geworden, vooral aan de randen. Al met al een heel mooi exemplaar. 27cm x 21.5cm. [14], xxxii, [2], 1112 pagina's. Claudius Claudianus, beter bekend als Claudianus, was een Latijnse dichter die leefde van ongeveer 370 tot 404 AD. Hij werd geboren in Alexandrië, Egypte, en sprak Grieks met een sterke kennis van de Latijnse literatuur. Hij staat bekend als een van de laatste grote dichters van het heidense Rome en diende als hofdichter tijdens het bewind van keizer Honorius in Milaan, nauw verbonden met de generaal Stilicho.

Some darkening / marking to the leather, with a repaired split to the top edge of the spine. Internally clean and tidy, with a little marking / darkening, particularly to the edges. N'étant pas experts en dessins de Cocteau, nous ne pouvons en garantir l'authenticité avec une certitude absolue. Toutefois, le sujet, le tracé fluide à l'encre et la thématique mythologique (le sphinx) s'inscrivent parfaitement dans le répertoire visuel de l'artiste. Par ailleurs, Cocteau réalisait fréquemment des croquis liés au théâtre ou à la production tels que des idées de costumes, des notes de mise en scène et des études de figures parallèlement à son travail pour le cinéma et la scène ; cette figure de sphinx semble donc être une esquisse préparatoire pour le film.

First edition. A beautiful silver gelatin photograph of Cocteau on the set of Le Testament D'Orphée. "In his last film, Jean Cocteau portrays an 18th-century poet who travels through time on a quest for divine wisdom. In a mysterious wasteland, he meets several symbolic phantoms that bring about his death and resurrection. With an eclectic cast that includes Pablo Picasso, Jean-Pierre Léaud, Jean Marais and Yul Brynner, Testament of Orpheus brings to full circle the journey that Cocteau began in The Blood of a Poet, an exploration of the torturous relationship between the artist and his creations." (Norton Simon Museum). A high quality photograph, in perfect condition, is held under a passe partout. The auction description is pasted onto the rear of the passe partout. The photograph is 20cm X 25cm. the passe partout is 30cm x 40cm. With this photograph is an ink sketch which we believe was drawn by Cocteau at the time of the filming. The page shows a fractured, cubist influenced profile face with a single staring eye. This is drawn with the quick, single line pen style Cocteau used throughout his life for his graphic work. Below it, a reclining winged female figure with a human torso/head and a striped, bird or sphinx like lower body with the inscription "3 Sphinx." To the verso of this sheet is a faint pencil sketch echoing the same reclining sphinx figure, plus a hand written note: "Cocteau / croquis étude / un spectacle / [Mme?] Leroux." Translated: "Cocteau, sketch-study, 'a spectacle,' [name] Leroux." "Un spectacle" is a phrase used within the Sphinx's own dialogue in La Machine infernale ("je vais te donner un spectacle"). This sketch, very much in the style of Cocteau, was accompanying the photograph in a sale from a reputable Parisian auction house. We are not experts in Cocteau's sketches, so cannot authenticate this with certainty. The subject matter, the loose ink line, and the sphinx/mythological theme are all very much in Cocteau's visual vocabulary. In addition, Cocteau frequently made theatrical/production sketches (costume ideas, staging notes, figure studies) alongside his film and stage work, and this sphinx figure reads like a working sketch for the film.

CLERGYMEN OF THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND

All published of this Anti-Catholic journal. Begun in July 1827, it ceased in 1828. Brown buckram boards with gilt titles to the spine. Volumes I & 2 bound as one. Bookplate of the Law Society to the inside board. Contemporary owner's signature to the half title. Contents to the beginning of volume I. The boards are in excellent condition. The pages of the journals are very clean and tidy, with only a touch of foxing or edge wear to them. The contents are a variety of articles and letters aimed at proving the superiority of the the Protestant Faith over Popish Superstition. There is even an article on Prophecies showing the overthrow of the Roman Church in volume II. It seems that the editors didn't prophecies the demise of the journal, as it ends at the end of the final issue without any comment. ii, 1-380. 1-288 pp.

First edition. Printed in Rome, it seems to have been printed to be read aloud, as the blessing on the work (the first eight pages) is in a very large type. The rest of the work is in a more normal, although still large, font. Clean and tidy, and ready for binding, in a limp, marbled cover. The essay itself is clean and tidy throughout. There are a few tiny (burn ?) holes to the last couple of pages, but overall a good looking piece. viii., 20.

La carte est centrée sur le désert du Sahara. La carte montre l'Espagne, l'Italie, la moitié de la France et « la Turquie en Europe ». Texte recto-verso (en français). Pliez au milieu de la carte, où lié dans sa géographie. Il n'y a pas de mention d'édition sur cette carte, mais elle correspond exactement aux 1787 pages de la Stanford University Collection. CLUZEAU, Pierre Antoine.

Saint-Maur-des-Fossés Cluzeau C1935 Une jolie gravure limitée, numérotée et signée de Île de la Cité, depuis la Seine, avec le square du Vert-Galant au premier plan. Typique des gravures fluviales de Cluzeau, bien que non datée, celle-ci se situe vers 1935. Bonne impression propre. Le monogramme rouge de l'artiste et le numéro 21/60 se trouvent en bas à gauche. Une forte signature au crayon se trouve en bas à droite. Sur carte d'art rigide. L'ensemble est propre et net, avec peut-être un léger assombrissement du papier. La gravure mesure 16 cm x 28 cm. La feuille mesure 32cm x 48cm. Pierre-Antoine-Marie Cluzeau (1884-1963) était un peintre, graveur, illustrateur et dessinateur français célèbre pour ses paysages évocateurs, ses scènes architecturales et ses portraits. Ses uvres sont particulièrement associées aux régions situées le long de la Seine et de la Marne, où il a dépeint à la fois la poésie tranquille de la vie rurale et l'énergie vibrante de la France urbaine.

An attractive, limited, numbered and signed engraving of the Île de la Cité from the Seine, with the Square du Vert-Galant in the foreground. Typical of Cluzeau's river engravings, although undated, this is circa 1935. Good clean impression. The artists red monogram, and the number 21/60 are below to the left. A strong signature in pencil below to the right. On stiff art card. All are clean and tidy, with perhaps fractional darkening to the paper. Engraving is 16cm x 28cm. The sheet is 32cm x 48cm. Pierre-Antoine-Marie Cluzeau (18841963), was a French painter, engraver, illustrator, and draughtsman celebrated for his evocative landscapes, architectural scenes, and portraits. His works are particularly associated with the regions along the Seine and Marne rivers, where he depicted both the quiet poetry of rural life and the vibrant energy of urban France. .

COBB, Ron.

Amsterdam Real Free Press / Arcanum 1969 Première édition / First thus. Il s'agit de la première édition européenne / Arcanum / Real Free press de cette collection de dessins politiques et de caricatures. Il y a eu une publication simultanée aux États-Unis par l'intermédiaire de Sawyer Press. Livre souple propre et bien rangé. Les couvertures sont un peu plus sombres. L'intérieur est propre et bien rangé. Le syndicat de la presse underground était une affiliation libre d'éditeurs qui, à ce moment-là, incluait le magazine Oz et IT au Royaume-Uni. Non paginé mais approximativement 28,5cm x 22cm. 98 pages. Ron Cobb (1937-2020) était un dessinateur politique et un artiste américain très influent, ainsi qu'un concepteur renommé de plusieurs films célèbres de science-fiction et de fantaisie. Ironiquement, il a commencé sa carrière chez Disney en travaillant sur "La Belle au bois dormant". Après avoir servi dans l'armée américaine (notamment au Viêt Nam), il est retourné à la vie civile et a commencé à publier des dessins humoristiques pour le Los Angeles Free Press en 1965. The underground press syndicate was a loose affiliation of publishers, which at this point included Oz magazine and IT in the UK. Unpaginated but approximately 28.5cm x 22cm. 98 pages. Ron Cobb (19372020) was a highly influential American political cartoonist and artist, as well as a renowned concept designer for several famous science fiction and fantasy films. Ironically, he began his career at Disney working on "Sleeping Beauty," after serving in the U.S. Army (including time in Vietnam), returned to civilian life and started contributing cartoons to the Los Angeles Free Press in 1965. He became a prominent figure of the American underground press in the late 1960s and early 1970s. His cartoons, noted for their sharp criticism of U.S. politics, militarism, racism, and environmental issues, were syndicated widely in underground and radical publications across the U.S. and the worldsuch as the Berkeley Barb, Chicago Seed, and East Village Other. His work was collected in several books, and he is also credited with creating the Ecology symbol used in the Ecology Flag. Later, he transitioned to work as a concept designer for films like "Alien," "Star Wars," "Raiders of the Lost Ark," "Conan the Barbarian," "Back to the Future," and "Total Recall," among many others. .

Traduction de l'uvre de Cobbett, de l'anglais vers le français. Bords de page marbrés. Pages de garde marbrées. Imprimé en quatre parties, avec des pages de titre séparées, mais une pagination continue. 588 pages. 215 x 135 mm (8œ x 5Œ pouces). La planche avant commence à se séparer du livre au niveau du dos. Frotter aux coins. Tamponné au verso de la page de titre avec le cachet officiel de la Bibliothèque Catholique de la Belgique. Quelques rousseurs mais dans l'ensemble bon exemplaire. Publié à l'origine par tranches entre 1824 et 1826, il faisait partie du débat sur l'émancipation catholique. Comme toujours, Cobbett était un peu un radical à contre-courant, et dans cet ouvrage soutient la position catholique.

Some foxing but overall a good copy. Originally published in installments between 1824-1826, it was part of the Catholic Emancipation debate. As ever, Cobbett was somewhat of a contrarian radical, and in this work supports the Catholic position.

Le témoignage le plus visible de Jean Cocteau en faveur de l'Europe prend la forme d'une série d'études pour un projet de timbre : dessins inédits sur le thème "Nous croyons en l'Europe". Dans la marge, deux lignes de latin "Enthea.... montis" et "Matth. 7.". Numéroté en haut au centre "V." Conservé dans une pochette d'archivage et sous un grand passepartout (50cm x 40cm), avec juste une touche de marquage. D'une série de douze planches gravées par Adriaen Collaert (1560-1618) et Raphael Sadeler (New Hollstein 238-247). D'après Maarten de Vos (Flamand, 1532-1603). Ceci correspond exactement à la référence du British Museum : 1910,0208.22 et nous avons pris la datation à partir de là.

Held in an archival pouch and under a large passepartout (50cm x 40cm), with just a touch of marking to it. This conforms exactly with the British Museum ref: 1910,0208.22 and we have taken the dating from there. .

Paris Société des eaux minérales de Vittel 1937 Première édition. Reliure d'éditeur en crocodile artificiel / peau de serpent. Encadrée de doubles filets dorés sur le premier plat. Dos en toile brune. Les planches sont propres et bien rangées, avec juste une petite marque sur la planche arrière. Le livre a été relié avec trois agrafes, et celles-ci se sont brisées à la page de titre, donc bien que la reliure soit ferme, elle s'ouvre à la page de titre (voir la photographie). Les pages sont propres mais le titre est un peu assombri. L'ouvrage est par ailleurs en très bon état. Après une photographie du Comité de L'Internat (avec les noms des membres en dessous) suivent 29 hôpitaux visités. Pour chacun d'eux, il y a une photographie des internes / du personnel hospitalier avec leurs noms. Il y a aussi une ou plusieurs photographies des hôpitaux / du personnel souvent dans des poses amusantes ou dans des situations amusantes. Un objet rare. Vittel est une société française d'eau minérale embouteillée. Fondée en 1854, la société s'est longtemps concentrée sur les effets curatifs de l'eau minérale. 22,5 cm x 31 cm.

First Edition. Publisher binding of artificial crocodile / snakeskin. Framed with double gilt fillets on the front board. Brown cloth spine. Clean and tidy boards with just a little marking to the rear board. The book has been bound with three staples, and this has broken open to the title page, so although the binding is firm, it falls open to the title (see photograph). Pages are clean but the title is a little darkened. Otherwise in very good condition. After a photograph of the Comité de L'Internat (with the member's names below) there follows 29 hospitals visited. For each, there is a photograph of the interns / hospital staff with names. There is also one or more photographs of the hospitals / staff often in amusing poses or in amusing situations. A rare item. Vittel is a French bottled mineral water company. Founded in 1854, for many years, the company focussed on the curative effects of mineral water. 22.5cm x 31cm. .

Légères traces à l'extérieur. À l'intérieur, légères taches dans les coins de chaque page. Légèrement froissé, avec des traces d'usure sur les bords. Jolie caricature sur double page de Disdéri, le photographe parisien qui a inventé la carte de visite. C'était l'apogée de l'engouement pour les cartes de visite à Paris. 48 pages. 25 cm x 18 cm.

First edition. A sound copy of this almanach. Soft brown paper covers with design to the front cover, and advertising to the rear cover. A little marking to the outside. Inside there is a light stain to the corner of each page. Slight creasing, with edgewear. Nice double page caricature of Disdéri, the Parisian photographer who invented the Carte de Visite.
