Créée pour "L'Art" en 1875, cette édition est imprimée sur un papier de meilleure qualité, et était destinée à être une impression d'art. L'édition moins chère portait des titres en haut et en bas de l'estampe. En excellent état, elle ne présente pas de défauts significatifs. Une scène attrayante, montrant des nymphes nues au bord d'un ruisseau à la fin de l'été. L'estampe est légèrement basculée sur une carte de support. Celle-ci est assez écaillée sur les bords et présente des marques, mais elle a fait son travail de protection de l'épreuve. L'image mesure 20 cm x 25 cm. La feuille mesure 26,5 cm x 31 cm. La carte de support mesure 30,5 cm x 44 cm. Charles Jean Louis Courtry (1846-1897) était un important graveur et illustrateur français du XIXe siècle, considéré comme l'un des plus grands aquafortistes de son époque. Spécialisé dans l'eau-forte, il a collaboré à des périodiques artistiques de premier plan tels que la Gazette des beaux-arts, L'Artiste, le Musée universel et Paris à l'eau-forte. Son travail témoigne d'une maîtrise technique et d'une finesse artistique dans le domaine de l'eau-forte, et il a illustré des ouvrages littéraires et de voyage notables, établissant un héritage important dans les arts graphiques français du XIXe siècle. Carolus-Duran (1837-1917), né Charles Auguste Émile Durand, est un éminent peintre français. A lovely engraving on fine art paper / china paper. Created for "L'Art" in 1875, this edition is in a higher quality paper, and was intended as a fine art print. The cheaper edition had titles to the top and base of the print. In excellent condition, it has no significant flaws. An attractive scene, showing naked nymphs by a stream at the end of summer. The print is lightly tipped onto a backing card. This is quite chipped to the edges and has marks to it, but it has done it's job of protecting the print. The image is 20cm x 25cm. The sheet is 26.5cm x 31cm. The backing card is 30.5cm x 44cm. Charles Jean Louis Courtry (18461897) was a prominent 19th-century French engraver and illustrator, esteemed as one of the foremost aquafortists of his era. Specializing in etching, he contributed to leading art periodicals including Gazette des beaux-arts, L'Artiste, Musée universel, and Paris à l'eau-forte. His work demonstrated technical mastery and artistic finesse within the field of etching, and he illustrated notable literary and travel works, establishing a significant legacy in nineteenth-century French graphic arts. Carolus-Duran (1837-1917), born Charles Auguste Émile Durand, was a distinguished French painter. As an educator, Carolus-Duran was highly influential, mentoring prominent artists like John Singer Sargent. He played a pivotal role in the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts. .

First edition. A nice copy of this scarce caricature album. The second produced by Crafty. Original hardback binding with black titles and coloured print to the front board. Text to the spine. Adverts for the publisher's other works to the rear cover. The binding is somewhat darkened, with some light scratching to the front board. The spine is a little nicked and split. Amsterdam et Leipzig Chez Arkstée et Merkus 1743 Bien qu'il s'agisse d'une nouvelle édition, il s'agit d'une première édition. Deux volumes reliés en un seul. Rare édition néerlandaise contrefaite de cet ouvrage scandaleux. Texte en français. Publié sous le titre "L'Ecumoire" alors que l'original était Tansaï et Neadarné. Bizarrement, le titre original a été utilisé en tête de chaque page - donc s'il s'agissait d'une tentative de déguiser l'ouvrage, c'était un déguisement assez mince. L'édition originale en texte seul - publiée en 1734 - était adressée à Pékin. Dans cette édition, une gravure en frontispice est répétée dans chaque volume. Elle représente l'empereur de Chine et sa cour avec des singes dans les arbres. La préface affirme qu'il s'agit d'un ouvrage classique de l'antiquité chinoise. Les pages de titre sont en rouge et en noir. Reliure en plein cuir moucheté, avec des motifs contemporains dorés au dos et une étiquette de titre bordeaux. Très légers frottements à la reliure seulement, en très bon état. L'intérieur de l'ouvrage est frais, avec juste un peu de marquage sur les pages. Le recto de la dernière page de garde présente quelques lignes gribouillées au crayon. Le livre a été à la fois populaire et scandaleux dès sa publication. Il fut considéré comme une critique de la bulle papale Unigenitus (contre le jansénisme) et du cardinal de Rohan, et Crébillon se retrouva emprisonné à la suite de ces accusations. Le personnage principal, Tanzai, cherche une épouse, malgré la prophétie qui le lui interdit. Il tombe amoureux de la belle Neadarné, et leur mariage a lieu. La nuit de noces est brutalement interrompue et ils doivent s'embarquer dans un voyage fantastique pour se libérer d'une malédiction. Ce livre était si inventif qu'il a conduit Voltaire à écrire en 1735 : "Je ne connais rien d'aussi fou que ce livre. Si je l'avais fait, on m'aurait brûlé". Although entitled a new edition, this is a first edition thus. Two volumes bound as one. A scarce Dutch counterfeit edition of this scandalous work. Text in French. Issued under the title "L'Ecumoire" whilst the original was Tansaï et Neadarné. Bizarrely, the original title was used at the head of each page - so if this was an attempt to disguise the work, it was a fairly thin disguise. The original text only edition - published 1734 - was addressed to Beijing. In this edition, a frontispiece engraving is repeated in each volume. This shows the Emperor of China and his Court with monkeys in the trees. The preface claims that this is a classic work of Chinese antiquity. Title pages both in red and black. Bound in full speckled leather, with contemporary designs in gilt to the spine, and burgundy title label. Very slight rubbing to the binding only, in very presentable condition. Internally, a fresh work, with just a touch of marking to the pages. The recto of the rear end paper has some doodle lines to it, in pencil. The book was both popular and scandalous from its publication. It was considered a criticism of the Papal Bull Unigenitus (against Jansenism) and of Cardinal de Rohan, and Crébillon found himself imprisoned following these accusations. The lead character, Tanzai, is looking for a wife, despite the prophecy forbidding him to do so. He falls in love with the beautiful Neadarné, and their marriage takes place. The wedding night is rudely disrupted, and they must embark on a fantastical journey to free themselves from a curse. It was so inventive, that it led Voltaire to write in 1735: "I don't know anything as crazy as this book. If I had done it I would have been burned." CROKER, Wilson.

London Livermore and Robinson. 1876 Nouvelle édition des discours de Croker sur l'inefficacité des acteurs sur la scène de Dublin. Cette édition est éditée avec des notes et des remarques par Walter Donaldson. Sur la première page de garde figure une longue inscription de Donaldson à Henry Poate Aslatt. Il écrit : "Dublin a beaucoup progressé en matière de construction, mais où sont ses propriétaires fonciers aujourd'hui ? Hélas, ils sont dispersés dans tous les pays, sauf le leur". Une seconde inscription de Henry Poate Aslatt (qui figure également sur la liste des souscripteurs) indique que le livre a été écrit par son vieil ami maçon, Donaldson. Tissu vert avec titres dorés. Légèrement manipulé mais dans l'ensemble en très bon état. L'intérieur est propre et bien rangé. Portrait frontispice de l'actrice "Miss O'Neill". Henry Poate Aslatt était une personnalité importante de Southampton, en Angleterre, au cours du XIXe siècle. Il était le plus jeune fils de John Aslatt, qui avait fondé l'entreprise Aslatt's Coach Factory au début du XIXe siècle. Henry a poursuivi l'entreprise familiale jusque dans les années 1890, en dirigeant la fabrique de carrosses située à l'angle d'Above Bar et d'Aslatt's Cut à Southampton. A new revised edition of Croker's speeches on the inefficiency of actors on the Dublin stage. This edition is edited with notes and remarks by Walter Donaldson. To the front end paper is a lengthy gift inscription from Donaldson to Henry Poate Aslatt. He writes "Dublin is much advanced in buildings, but where are her land owner's now? Alas scattered in every country but their own". There is a second inscription from Henry Poate Aslatt (who also appears on the subscriber list) stating that the book was by his old Masonic friend, Donaldson. Green cloth with gilt titles. In slightly handled but overall very good condition. Internally clean and tidy throughout. Frontis portrait of the actress "Miss O'Neill." Henry Poate Aslatt was a prominent figure in Southampton, England, during the 19th century. He was the youngest son of John Aslatt, who founded Aslatt's Coach Factory in the early 19th century. Henry continued the family business into the 1890s, managing the coach works located on the corner of Above Bar and Aslatt's Cut in Southampton. Walter Alexander Donaldson, (1793-1877) also wrote "Recollections of an Actor" in 1865. 59 pages. 18.5cm x 12cm. .

CRUIKSHANK, George

London Thomas McLean 1835 Imprimé à l'origine en 1819 par G. Humphrey, il s'agit de la troisième (et dernière) impression de 1835 par McLean. Cruikshank se moque des excès de la mode et de la rapidité avec laquelle elle change. Imprimé sur du papier crème épais. La feuille a été pliée près des lignes tracées (voir la photo du verso). Il y a plusieurs plis et un peu d'usure sur les bords. La feuille est assombrie, bien que les couleurs de la main soient encore vives. Dans l'ensemble, il s'agit d'un exemplaire raisonnable plutôt que d'un bel exemplaire ! 28cm x 36.5cm.

Originally printed in 1819 by G. Humphrey, this is the third (and final) printing of 1835 by McLean. Cruikshank mocks the excess of fashion and the speed with which fashion changes. Printed on thick, cream paper. This has been folded over close to the ruled lines (see photo of verso) There are several creases, and a touch of edgewear. The sheet is darkened, although the hand colouring is still bright. Overall, a reasonable rather than lovely copy! 28cm x 36.5cm. .

London Tilt & Bogue 1842 Signé par Cruikshank avec une dédicace à R.H. Barham, l'auteur des Légendes d'Ingoldsby (sous le pseudonyme de Thomas Ingoldsby). Reliure originale en buckram avec titres et motifs dorés sur le plat avant. Pages de garde jaunes. Ex-libris armorial de Lord Vernon (député et partisan du projet de loi de réforme de 1832) sur la page de garde avant. La signature de Cruikshank se trouve sur une page blanche entre la page de garde et le demi-titre (probablement insérée). Au verso de cette page est collée une publicité pour le livre Table de Cruikshank. Le reste du livre est en bon état, propre, sans défauts significatifs. Quelques coupures de presse de Cruikshank sont incluses, notamment une page de titre du numéro 1 de la série Omnibus. 250 x 160 mm (9Ÿ x 6Œ pouces). Vi, 300 pp. Catalogue de l'éditeur de 16 pages collé à la fin. Une fiche de libraire datant de 1970 et indiquant un prix en livres sterling est jointe. Barham (Ingoldsby) est décédé en 1845. Cet ouvrage a été publié (et probablement dédicacé) juste avant la publication des Légendes d'Ingoldsby. Les deux auteurs admiraient beaucoup le travail l'un de l'autre.

Signed by Cruikshank with inscription to R.H. Barham, the author of Ingoldsby Legends (under the Pseudonym Thomas Ingoldsby). The rest of the book is in good, clean condition, with no significant flaws. Included are a few loose clippings of Cruikshank's, including a title leaf from issue 1 of the serial of the Omnibus. 250 by 160mm (9٠by 6Πinches). This work was published (and presumably inscribed) just before publication of the Ingoldsby Legends. The two author's greatly admired each others work. Smedley (1818-1864) était un romancier et satiriste anglais dont les uvres étaient souvent illustrées par George Cruikshank. He was an American pioneer aviator, balloonist, Car driver, book collector, and traveller. As an automotive pioneer, by 1909 he had been arrested for speeding, given driving lessons to locals and been injured in a car crash. He owned an auction house, which was later (after several incarnations) acquired by Sothebys. He had a complex marital life. In his will, he left half of his fortune to his wife and half to his mistress with the stipulation that the two, (whom had never before met), must live together in harmony until one of them died. La plaque est un peu assombrie et présente quelques plis très légers dans le coin. Mais la coloration à la main est très bonne et l'assiette est encore digne d'être exposée. Le cadre est un peu daté et a subi de légères manipulations, mais il est en bon état. Peut être expédié sans cadre si nécessaire. "Un vieux médecin grotesque, avec un nez en escarboucle, s'approche d'une dame en s'inclinant et en lui tendant un jupon maladroit. Il dit : "Mme Jenny a dit que Madame se plaignait d'avoir froid aux reins - je viens donc d'apporter un jupon de flanelle chaud." Elle est assise à côté d'une table à thé et lève les bras en arrière, frémissant d'horreur ; elle dit : "Je n'ai pas de reins, mon ami ! Voulez-vous faire de moi un monstre ?!!" Elle porte une robe à taille haute et à manches courtes, sous laquelle ses jambes se dessinent. Son petit chien aboie contre le médecin. But the hand colouring is very good, and the plate still worthy of display. Frame is a little dated, and with slight handling, but sound. Can be shipped without frame if required. "A grotesque old doctor, with carbuncled nose, approaches a lady, bowing low and holding out a clumsy petticoat. He says: "Mrs Jenny said your Ladyship complain'd of being cold about the loins - so I have Just stept in with a warm flannel petticoat." She is seated beside a tea-table, and throws up her arms, flinching back in horror; she says: "I have no loins fellow! do you want to make a monster of me?!!" She wears a high-waisted, short-sleeved dress, under which her legs are defined. Her little dog barks at the doctor. Le deuxième volume est une deuxième édition. Demi-cuir fauve d'origine avec des planches marbrées. Les planches et le cuir sont un peu frottés et semblent avoir été restaurés. Étiquette en cuir bourgogne avec titres dorés. Les titres sont un peu frottés. A l'intérieur, l'ouvrage porte l'ex-libris d'Edward William Harcourt (1825-1891), député conservateur, naturaliste et auteur de plusieurs livres. Quelques rousseurs sur les pages de garde. Le reste de l'ouvrage est propre et bien rangé. Les deux volumes contiennent des préfaces fraîches et des errata, ainsi qu'un appendice de 56 pages qui traite des problèmes liés à l'admission des patients fiévreux dans les hôpitaux. Currie a été le premier médecin à utiliser l'eau froide dans le traitement de la fièvre. Il privilégiait l'eau de mer et aspergeait les patients d'eau de plus en plus froide pour tenter d'apaiser la fièvre. A nice edition of this work. Two volumes bound as one. Volume one is a fourth edition. Volume two is a second edition. Original half tan leather with marbled boards. The boards and leather are a little rubbed, and appear to have had some restoration. Burgundy leather label with gilt titles. A little rubbing to the titles. Inside, the work bears the bookplate of Edward William Harcourt (1825-1891), Conservative Member of Parliament, naturalist and author of several books. Some foxing to the end papers. The rest of the book is clean and tidy throughout. The two volumes contain fresh prefaces and errata, and an appendix of 56 pages which deals with issues in admitting fever patients to hospitals. Currie was the first doctor to use cold water in the treatment of fever. He favoured using sea water and showered patients with colder and colder water in an attempt to subdue fever.
